We live right up the road, and had never tried this place. It's my husband's birthday, and we decided rather than making a mess in the kitchen, we'd try something new. I'm so glad we did! This quaint little family-style restaurant really hit the spot! Just moved to area from TX and was looking for a restaurant that served breakfast all day. Found it!! Hubby ordered a skillet, our son ordered a Belgium waffle, and I had the Omni omelette. All of it was delicious, came out hot and our waitress, Jennifer was absolutely fabulous! I complimented her on great service and she said she was glad to hear it cause she not having a good day. Thanks to the good reviews on Yelp, we decided to give the Silver Spoon a try. We were very pleased! We went for lunchtime breakfast and everything we got was delicious. This is a nice little family-owned business in Durham. The food is great for a good price, the staff and owners are friendly folks, and they seems to know the return customers by face and often by name. They have a good bit of variety to their menu for all meals of the day. I am a big fan of their skillet breakfasts, though their french toast is very good as well. My only issue is that it can be easy to miss their sign/driveway, so look for the sign of the ABC Mart next door instead and you will be in the right spot! read more

After passing by this location many times over the last year, my Fiancee and I decided to finally stop here for breakfast (in part due to what I read on Yelp). She got the breakfast fritatta (which was as big as the plate!) with home fries while I had the pork chops and fried eggs. The food was very tasty! The service good and what you'd hope for. CLeanliness was next to Godliness...lol, clean menus, clean silverware and glasses, even the ceiling fans were spotless. Friendly people, an impressive menu selection (awesome breakfast options) and way better than what Elmo's or those fast food joints offer, I assure you! Prices were rather reasonable too. For the fritatta and the chops/eggs with home fries, toast, etc and two drinks, it came to about $20. And believe me, the portions are grand! My only "complaint"? The glasses for tea are very small.... and they have two different designs of glasses. I know, thats kinda minor. Thats my point! Sunday Brunch here is wonderful. From being greeted at the door and seated, to the friendly wait staff to the delightful food, we have always enjoyed everything on the menu. My son is a big pancake and waffle fan. Me, I love the omelettes and my husband loves the grits, eggs and bacon. Three visits, great quality! Prices are reasonable; therefore, a great food value. The service has always been very good. The breakfast burritos, blueberry or pecan pancakes are all very good. the building itself is and understatement. looks to be an old converted Pizza Hut. the glass door is held together with packaging tape. service was below par as my father and I had walked in, were hardly greeted and then made to wait to be seated in a nearly empty restaurant while the waitress finished writing up a check in front of us without bothering to even say it would be a second. the menu is a little overwhelming since breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served all day. however, there are zero pictures on the menu so you better have a good imagination. I went with the Oscar skillet and I have to say that I was pretty disappointed. if the menu says it has cheese ON it, then expect to get cheese as your entree and everything else as a side order. my skillet was basically a mess of cheese and meats with some potatoes thrown in almost as an afterthought. in fact, the dish as a whole was a rather sorry excuse for breakfast. not to mention my English muffin was pretty haphazard. how do you screw that up?! save yourself the disappointment and go find a Denny's, Waffle House, Cracker Barrel, or IHOP. at least corporate will make sure you don't have to worry about the glass in the door shattering on top of you as you leave with a stomach full of regret. read more

I'd describe the place as an old diner. It's clean but could use some repairs inside - ceiling damage, cracked glass door. We've been there several times and will go back. The prices are on the low side but the food is good. Fried chicken, fried chicken livers with smothered onion sauce, fried okra, field peas, etc were all very good. The wait staff is courteous. Visited Silver Spoon Saturday evening around 3:30 may 11th and we had a party of 8 we ordered our meals and 4 people in my party ordered Mac & Cheese and all 4 Mac orders was cold. Waiter takes them back and comes back in a few minutes with the same 4 bowls of Mac & Cheese then says do we know who's bowl is who's ? Really !! I don't know what they could have done in the kitchen when she took them back. The cook should have fixed 4 fresh bowls of Mac. Waiter & Cook need some training . I hope it doesn't happen to know one else. Other than that incident my food was pretty good. read more

Close to my house and I was meeting a friend for breakfast so we went here. Coming in, the bathrooms were a complete turn off... There was an odor in front of the hostess area. The selection on the menu was very vast, slightly overwhelming but I do like options. They brought a pitcher of water when I ordered water which I really liked. I didn't see any healthy options except oat pancakes. I ordered those and was pretty disappointed when a bleached flour pancake came out that had oats sprinkled on the top and a few baked inside.... Definitely nothing whole grain about that. I could tell it's a spot loyal customers frequent, but I will not be going back. read more

In town for a baseball tournament and needed dinner in between games. We found this place on Yelp and couldn't have been happier with our meal. There were 11 of us including 5 hungry teenage boys. I stopped by for a seat and noticed the 91 percent food service inspection awarded by the Durham County/City. To score a 91 translates to some serious violations. I decided to go elsewhere. The rear of the restaurant where I parked there was a storage building in ill repair and it was unlocked. There was lots of old lumber and boards along side the building and it appeared like street pickup material. There were cleaning buckets and clutter behind the back door. Today 2-5-2014 my wife and I ate at the silver spoon today. We have at at the restaurant since it reopened under the current management. What makes me so mad is the fact was how we were treated today. I ordered a combo fish dinner, which consists of fish, oysters , and scallops. I was brought out a 4scallops smaller than the tip of my little finger, 5 oysters about the size of my of the tip of my little finger. When I spoke to the waitress she spoke to the manager who was not even professional enough to come and address my concerns. The waitress apologized to me and said it was beyond her control. She wanted to help me but she could not. I was insulted to be charged full price for so little servings and no relief was offered. The manager who knows that we have been at his restaurant countless times walked out cut his eyes at us and would not even speak with me. This is not good customer relations, which is an understatement. Since he didn't have enough character to speak with me, I told the waitress we would not be back and we live around the corner from the restaurant. I wonder if things are that bad with Silver Spoons then they need to close. One thing for sure they won't rip me off anymore read more

Absolutely terrible! The "lady" who greets the guests when you walk through the door is so loud and obnoxious. Our waitress Pam looked dirty and actually told us that certain menu items were not worth ordering because they were old, out-dated or came from a can. She honestly made me feel like it was a horrible decision to dine here. By the time we were able to actually order our food, over a half hour had already gone by. We decided to order the fried chicken which seemed to be the only menu item Pam would even come close to recommending. What she failed to tell us was that it would take us another half hour to receive our dinner. So, after an hour we were able to finally eat. The chicken was still pink inside. We waited an hour altogether for raw undercooked food. I asked to speak to a manager and the "lady" who greeted us in the beginning came to our table, smacked her lips and literally rolled her eyes when we showed her the raw, undercooked chicken. The vegetables (microwaved) were ice cold and there was a crusty piece of something stuck on the side of the plate that looked like it had been growing there for awhile. We told her that we had been waiting for an extremely long time and that we would simply like to leave so we could still try and purchase dinner elsewhere and she raised her voice stating that "well y'all need to pay up then. People love our chicken and ain't nothin wrong with this here chicken". To put this as ladylike as possible, we will not ever return nor would I Ever recommend dining here. The customer service is amongst the worst I have ever received and the food is, if not reached already, minutes away from handing out doses of food poisoning or worse. Clearly, the owners have no respect for the industry and simply try to make a dollar and not what so ever provide a great dining experience. The place is dirty. Cobb webs everywhere including on the table ledges, window ledges and plants. The carpet reeks of vomit and urine and the bathrooms smell of sewage. Good luck to any who attempt a meal here. Oh, and we still were required to pay our entire check because it's "not her fault we didn't want to eat it". It's a shame I even have this one star! read more

Wow! That's my first thought as I bite into the meatloaf. But it was a bad wow. It was the most disgusting meatloaf I've ever tasted in my entire life. It seemed as if it wasn't even real hamburger meat. Maybe dog food. The Mac and cheese wasn't made in the restaurant. The hushpuppies tasted old. It was the worse meal I've ever had. Do not eat here. I felt sick after eating it. What really concerned me was when I was ordering and the waitress told me that the meatloaf is fresh today. Huh?! So the food isn't fresh there most of the time in sure. Tried Silver Spoon for first time and was disappointed. My friends have gone there and said it was pretty good so maybe we hit an off night but my husband doesn't want to go back after getting the worst country style steak he ever had. I tried it and was awful, meat jelly with paste, with way too much salt! My son's chocolate chip pancakes were good and my chicken with dumplings were good but also too salty. The menu was impressive (lots to choose from) and prices were good. The place was clean and service was very good. I got some peach cobbler to take home. This out dated looking dinner is much more than meets the eye. As a designer I would love to give this place a make over, restaurant impossible style. While the place it self may bug you, the food is for the most part excellent! The FRIED CHICKEN IS AMAZING. I can not stress enough about how good this chicken is. I visited from Illinois and I would fly back just for this chicken i'm serious! I didn't try much else but the yams/sweet potatoes are great and anything they make fresh is good. Make sure you ask them what they make as opposed to what comes in a can or frozen you will have a much better experience if you stick to what they make. FRIED CHICKEN! read more

I rarely write reviews but today prompted me to do so. I and my spouse visited today and arrived in the parking lot to see that it was really busy so we thought hey it must be a good place. Upon entry we were greeted and immediately seated. The server was attentive and friendly. But the food itself was just okay, It was not something that I could not prepare at home but was just as that plain, The home fries were so bland and not tasty at all. And when we paid we had a coupon for one item when another was purchased which they would not take. The cashier did not read the coupon correctly but assumed that she knew what to do with it. We did not argue yet we paid and determined that this was not the place to return to. We will definately take our business elsewhere.. Since moving to the location we have not found a good place to eat except Pan Pan and Sam's in the Village. Best food for the pricing they will always get our business. read more
