I have been a fan for many years but this my first time back since pandemic. Perhaps they were very understaffed but today they didn't get it right. (Caesar salad with dressing on the side came with dressing mixed in and on the side. Took a long time to remake and then they brought it without any dressing at all. I asked for some on the side and that took another several min by which time everyone else at my table was done eating.) I asked for a to go box which then never came and we had to ask the takeout counter for it. Food was also bland with cold fries that came with my spouses burger, biter coffee. Despite the good reviews, my experience at this Silver Diner was average to meh at best. Perhaps it was the day (New Years Day) or the time (2pm - tail end of the late lunch rush).. but I wasn't overly impressed. It was my first time at a Silver Diner, and the initial impressions - the decor and ambiance, are all very cool. The 50's diner theme definitely applies, and they do a solid job. There was a long line waiting for seating when we got there, but the line did move fairly quick, even with the lunch crowd still inside. Of course, with the restaurant full, noise was an issue, and it was hard to hear members of our party that were at the other end of the table. My wife and I were the last of a group of 7 that arrived at separate times - We did get a booth, it looks like it was more a booth for 6. 7 can fit comfortably if everyone is anorexic thin though. Our server was solid, able to keep track of the 3 separate parties that made up our group, and offering split checks early in the visit. This is a key plus, and probably much easier on him instead of trying to re-do everything at the end of the meal. The menu - interesting at best - definitely some outside the box foods and combinations of things - such as SW Quinoa (is it really that hard to spell out "Southwest"), Lentils, and Brussel Sprouts. The food, however, left something to be desired. My Caramel French toast (which was supposed to come with a Caramel Drizzle and Maple Sugar glaze) was plain. At least they remembered to bring Syrup with it. Also, once they got the entree's for the table out, there were 3 orders missing sides, and took an additional 5-10 minutes to get (long enough for the server to stop by once and say "they are on the way".) Additionally, no one's water got refilled - which for me, is a big no-no. We had 4 empty glasses sitting on the table for at least 10 minutes. Maybe it was a bad day, but there wasn't anything to truly make me want to try other Silver Diner's that are closer to my home. I've been eating from here occasionally for several years. I usually have a good experience, with fresh, delicious, properly prepared food. Today was different. I decided I wanted something basic, so I ordered the chicken tender platter. To my disappointment, every single chicken tender had a long, chewy piece of fat or gristle inside. I don't know if they have a new cook who hasn't been properly trained to cut chicken, or if the quality went down and they're frozen cheap ones now, but is not what I'm used to and it mostly ruined my meal. Lucky for me, I still had the caesar salad that came with it! Wait, no. ALL the Nope. My salad, which I expected to be a normal, refreshing salad, included NO dressing and was PACKED with kale! I do realize that Silver Diner has been getting more and more hipsterdouche pretentious by the year, but can we at least NOT have kale on EVERYTHING, especially in places it doesn't even belong? So now I have a box of mostly kale and croutons, with no dressing to offset the kale flavor, and even if I had dressing, effing kale feels like hair in my mouth. I used to love their salads, and now I won't order one again, as well as the chicken tenders. I used to really love this place in general, but I think it's time for me to part ways with Silver Diner. I'm pretty bummed about that. Also, I really wanted to give this 1 star instead of 2, because this was a rare cheat meal during my awesomely successful weight loss journey, and it ruined my night. Silver diner...where to start I like this place. The food is good, and there's nothing better than all day breakfast! I love the eggs benedict, amd the banana french toast. I think they do get somethings wrong...first off the service has always been hit or miss, and the place always seems disorganized... That aside... salmon sliders... not so much. They always seem fishy, too much weird wasabi mayo,and the bread is always hard every time I've eaten them (I've orders them over and over due to my love of salmon, and they have never been good). As far as sides the fries are always weird and dry, and the sweet potato fries are always soggy. Crab cakes are also something silver diner shouldn't attempt as they are always mostly breading, and I'm sure the margins on crab are too high to make them any other way. There are some wins on the menu- I love the triple decked club. Most of what I despise (strong word for me) is the jukeboxes. I now only carry out at silver diners because of their jukeboxes. There is nothing worse than leaving work with a fuzzy post work headache, or rocking a little hangover, or just plain looking for a somewhat peaceful sit down experience and that being shatterd by being sat next to a table of kids blaring those stupid little jukeboxes. Those juke boxes get really loud! I mean loud enough that I haven't been able to hear my table mates just holding normal conversation. Worst off whenever I get sat next to a way loud table banging those jukeboxes it's always defeated parents with wild kids they cannot contain letting them go buck wild. I can't take it, so now I only take out. There should be a better way to manage those jukeboxes. Or a lower max volume. Service is eh. Food is hit or miss. read more

After scouring the menu, I decided on the cheesesteak omelet and it was just the right amount of steak to american cheese to egg ratio. The menu has just been revamped and I love the focus on local farms in the VA/DC/MD area -- a new and improved Silver Diner if you will! The service was speedy and friendly and, like any great diner, the food came out incredibly quick. My only complaint is that the jukebox at our table didn't work so I couldn't listen to any Grease soundtrack or Aretha Franklin songs :( read more

Sunday family breakfast review: Okay so the kids were going batshit crazy. You know what I'm talking about. It's Sunday morning and all you want to do is loaf in bed and relax. Nope. It's not happening because by the grace of God and a couple bottles of wine you have three kids. So you take them out imagining that you're going to have a nice peaceful breakfast with tasty food, delightful coffee, and intriguing discussion about current events? Well? Once in a while it really does happen. Now, that's not all up to the location where you're eating, but it has a lot to do with it. This could be a first, boyz and girlz, because I'm going to give you the 'bottom line' on this place at the BEGINNING of the review for a change! And the 411, in my not-so-humble-opinion (IMNSHO for you serial texters out there), here's a little ditty to remember regarding the Silver Diner: "Having breakfast? HIP HIP HOORAY!!! Having dinner? Stay FAAAAARRRRR AWAAAAY..." To say that this location is inconsistent with the food quality is putting it rather mildly. Okay, so I shouldn't be TOO hard on the place, since we aren't exactly talking about a place that Anthony Bourdain or even Adam Richman has listed on their Blackberries as a five-star feed bag. You're hungry, you want food FAST, you come here and you eat. End of story, right? Well, since we got our "Lifetime Savings Cards," my partner and I have been coming here trying to log in our "Frequent Eater Miles" to work up to getting that $5.00 off of a sixth meal, once you've eaten here five times before the end of December. Well, we may yet achieve that sought-after goal, but NOT having dinner here again, that's "fo' shizzle." The last time we ate here, we had breakfast food, and it was out of this world! The pancakes, the omelets, the coffee...all KIL-LER. But what a difference a time period makes... We just got back from having dinner not a few minutes ago, and though the service was okay, the food was MUCH less than that. My mate had the Chicken Fingers and I had the Sampler basket as always. The Southwestern Egg Rolls have always been a favorite, and did not disappoint this time, either. The Fingers tend to be a little top-heavy on the breading side, as do the Onion Rings, but that's the way they've always been, and when I want "bad-for-you" food, I really don't mind that. So score about a 'B' for the appetizers. As for the "Main Event?" Sorry, folks, but was not feelin' the 'Sliver Diner luv' with this course. I had the "Gunpowder Bison Sliders", while Bear had their All-American counterpart. Now, he likes steaks and burgers that are still in "semi-MOOING" mode when they hit the table, and with one bite of my sliders, he declared that they were a tad underdone even for HIS taste. And that's sayin' something! Likewise, I tried his sliders, and though the beef was cooked perfectly, the buns were just this side of incinerated. Not burned black, mind you, but they could have been taken off the grill earlier. FIVE MINUTES EARLIER. So, needless to say, no clean plates were left tonight! And bravely, we did try our hand at desserts. Did we fare any better? Well, ONE of us did. Bear got the Red Velvet Pumpkin Cake, which was served warm and was AWESOME. It made me wish I'd ordered it when I had a couple of bites...and I don't even LIKE Red Velvet Cake. As for moi - I went with the "Brownie Indulgence"...which I will not be "INDULGING" in again anytime soon. The whipped cream and ice cream scoops were the best part...but the brownies - the 'heartbeat' of the dessert were a real letdown....no nuts to be had, and DRY, DRY, DRY, which is sinful. Good brownies should have that great crusty outside, with a nice, moist, chewy inside. The Force was NOT with the baker who turned these out overcooked. So, there you have it, folks. Didn't wanna go back, but was very hungry. Asked for bowl of oatmeal before my meal (Blue Plate Special) with lots of butter. A few minutes later, oatmeal AND my meal and NO BUTTER. Always problems with my order. Always. When you ask for lots of butter, you shouldn't get two of those little pads of butter. Even had to ask for a napkin. Waiter walked by me 3 times and ignored me while the booth in front and back of me, he stopped 3 times. The thing that pisses me off more than anything is when I got the check. $18.59. The past times I have gone there, it's been $16.00, $17.25 but this was the highest. Last week it was $11.56. Another waitress asked if everything was okay and I told her about the bill. She gave it to the manager who looked at it and told me that the waiter didn't write the "Blue Plate Special" and it was $11.56 meaning that I have gotten screwed several times. The servers were gathered around, giving me dirty looks during the time the manager was trying to see what was going on with my bill. Will never, ever go back. read more

This is one of those places where you can only expect to get what you get. I mean, it's a diner, right? So no complaining about the service, or the coffee (although Aussies are allowed) in fact unless you get a cockroach in your food it's going to be what it is supposed to be. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed it here - had a great omelette for breakfast with an orange juice from heaven (Warning! DO NOT order a large OJ. You will get a pint of juice - seriously, it is ginormous) and very good service. So much so I came back for a second go, and also had a burger here for dinner one night. The burger was excellent, I have to say, although more jalapenos would have been the perfect touch for me. Every time the food was tasty, well cooked and seasoned, delivered with a smile and a top up of coffee or water. Who needs a fancy brunch in DC when you have your local Silver Diner with plentiful seating and ample parking? I am only being sorta serious, as I of course have my popular brunch favorites in the city too, but really guys, Silver Diner has stepped up its game. While the misinformed may view it as a greasy diner catering to families, I know it as an evolving restaurant with lots of locally sourced meats and produce, ample healthy options, and creative dishes that you wouldn't associate with a typical diner menu. It consistently hits the spot. Everyone is so nice too! Also, I appreciate the fact that you can get goat cheese bruschetta or quinoa pancakes (delicious) and fries smothered in cheese all at the same table. After our last visit here, probably five years ago, we'd written off Silver Diner because of heavy and salty food; at some point since then Silver Diner seems to have gotten the memo, and the food is much better than I recalled (or expected). Overall probably a 3.5* review, but I'm rounding up for exceeding my expectations. The new (at least new since five years ago) menu concept of "fresh and local so you eat well" is really an improvement. In the past our food had always been overly heavy, salty, and seemed like it came straight from Sysco by way of the freezer. This time I found my lamb sliders (on gluten-free buns, which I normally avoid but were actually pretty good) to be nicely sized, actually tasting of lamb, and with just the right amount of tsitziki to give it flavor without overwhelming the rest of the flavors. The greek salad that came with them was quality greens (no slimy or limp leaves) with decent tomato chunks, and again just the right amount of dressing. In both cases the cooks used red onion sparingly; no giant slices of bitter onion on the sliders just some thin shavings to counter the rich lamb, and a small scattering of thinly sliced and chopped onions on the salad. In both cases I got to enjoy the hint of onion, but didn't leave feeling like I'd eaten a raw onion like I usually do with burgers and greek salads. The only knock on my wife's bahn mi turkey burger, which was generally quite good, was a touch too much teriyaki sauce, but the rest of the flavors were good, and the patty wasn't as dried-out as most turkey burgers get. I wouldn't call Silver Diner a five-star experience by any stretch, but it was a heck of a lot better than I remembered, and I'll admit that I'm actually curious to go back again and try some other stuff on the seasonal menu. read more

I'm from the land of diners, north Jersey. We have a diner on every block similar to a Starbucks down here in DC. I always thought the diners down here were terrible and for the most part, they still are. However, I have to say I am extremely happy with Silver Diner. I NEVER thought I'd say that about a diner in the DC area. Their restaurant is clean! There service is friendly and quick! And above all, their food is very good. It's hot, it comes out quickly, it's the right portion, it's always what you ordered, it's seasoned well, and it tastes great! You know how at most diners you have to ask for a substitution if you want something healthier at a diner? Well at this place you practically have to ask if you want something UNhealthier. Example: If you want to have a heart attack with the "California" breakfast scrambler, you have to ask them to use full eggs, switch out the fresh delicious strawberries for potatoes, and switch out the tasty grilled chicken for bacon or sausage. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I DO want an unhealthy, delicious meal, and they DO STILL have that. Here, at least I have a healthy food selection to choose from if I want. And DON'T WORRY, they still have all the delicious fattening things like great milkshakes (made with Bryers all natural ice cream) and a huge slices of delicious pies. Speaking of which, the bread pudding is REALLY good and INSANELY good for a diner. Everyone can eat here happily whether you are a fatty boom-boom, an athlete training for a triathlon, or a body builder on a pre-contest diet. The only negative thing I can think of (which takes off 1/2 star) is that they are not open 24 hours like a lot of the diners back in 'ol Jersey. But they are open fairly late so I haven't had a problem yet. I never thought I would be happy with a diner in the DMV, but I'll admit I was wrong. I love diners. They are a dying breed in our society today, and although the Silver Diner has more of a corporate feel than you might find on a lonely road on Route 66, it's a great place for fairly priced food and a good environment. This place is surprisingly well suited for two very different types of eating experiences. It's great if you have a family-- they have lots of choices for my picky 2-year old and my wife and I as well (who happen to like more than just spaghetti and cheese pizza). This particular Silver D is great for business meetings as well-- they have wireless internet access (which I am using right now), and it's in a great locations in the heart of Tyson's. If you're single and need a great place to take a date, you may want to look elsewhere. But if you need a solid option for a meal with the kids or a good place to talk business over an egg salad on marble rye, the Silver D is a great option. read more

I think it's very funny a previous reviewer said "it's a diner so don't expect grass-fed beef" and then I walked into this diner for the first time last night. And what did they have? Grass-fed beef. lol. This was a very pleasant surprise overall. I was greeted with organic ketchup on the table (tastes so much better than high fructose corn syrup heinz) and sea salt and ground peppercorn shakers. The menu features local craft beer, local virginia wines, and even bison. The menu boasts of its farm to fork philosophy, with the chicken being antibiotic free, free range, and hormone free. The beef is grass-fed, but grain finished. So it's not 100% grass fed but at least it's literally half way there. They even have locally raised Bison, which I think I will try next time. Their milkshakes are VERY good and a must have. They have a fun jukebox at every table with each song costing 25¢ and a generous Michael Jackson selection, which gives them bonus points in my book. You can adjust the volume at your table so you don't have to hear songs that annoy you that other people chose. The service was fast and friendly. They seemed to give us plenty of time to look at the menu and came promptly when it was obvious we were ready to order. I had a grilled cheese with tomato. That came with a side of cranberry dipping sauce. Everything tasted amazing. My GF ordered the BLT which featured nitrate-free bacon. She said it was good as well. Their fries tasted very good also. Overall I came in with very low expectations (I was hoping it was at least a bit better than Denny's) adn walked away very impressed. It may not look like much from the outside but they have a great healthier food philosophy that really shows in the meat selection and menu options. Also breakfast is served all day. Prices were very reasonable, with the only pricey item being the milk shakes (but worth every penny). They are so huge, you might just want to order one of them and share them with two people. Definitely give them place a shot, I think they should be rewarded for offering healthier food at good prices. I went to the Silver Diner on 4/16/16 to have breakfast with a friend I hadn't seen in several years. The only bad thing I can say about the Silver Diner is the prices (as other Yelpers I think have mentioned) the prices overall are little high for the type of food they serve. However that is a small compliant because my egg whites, pancakes and fruit were delicious. I was really happy to learn that the Silver Diner can also offer you veggie sausage (one of the benefits of being part of a larger chain is that they have more options available for "us" vegetarians.) Our waitress never left my coffee cup empty. She checked in on us several times. I politely told the waitress my friend and I were not in a rush to finish (and wanted to spend a little extra time catching up). She didn't check in on as frequently. I never felt any pressure to leave (or that she was trying to turn over the table). In a nutshell, if I am looking for a place to have a late breakfast in the Tyson's Corner area I wouldn't hesitate going back to the Silver Diner. read more

Whenever I would see the outside of this place, I would compare it to a place out west called 5 and Diner. Kitschy 50's inside and out, basic diner menu, not that spectacular. This place is so different than that. Yes, the kitsch is there, both inside and out, but not as much as you'd expect past the "lobby" area. When I started this review, it was right after my very 1st visit. Now, I've been back a few times and always for breakfast. One of my fave things on the menu is the Oaxaca omelet. I love the filling (black bean salsa, pepperjack, cilantro, & avocado). Together they lend a really nice balance to the thick fluffy eggs. Another fave is the country scrambler. It's a nice mix of everything I usually want to eat on one fairly proportionate plate. Overall, if you're looking for a decent breakfast that wont break the bank, this is your place. read more

Wish we had a Silver Diner in our neck of the woods. We always make a bee line to Silver Diner for breakfast when we know they are on our travel route. Love that they incorporate local ingredients. Very clean, bright & cheery staff make it such a pleasant place to stop. We have only been able to visit for breakfast and never been disappointed. Meals are priced very well. I love the chipped beef...fresh not lumpy and the biscuits!! yummo! I had a healthier option this morning... the yogurt parfait which had an amazing nutritional profile and was served in a sunday glass...looked like dessert. creamy with fresh banana and maine blueberries with granola and local honey! Hubs and I are a fan of the Silver Diner and often make a point of stopping in when we're in a town that has one. That being said, we definitely have certain (simple) expectations for our visit: we know we'll receive friendly service, have a variety of items to choose from and of course, enjoy the kitschy diner atmosphere. On this particular visit, we took my dad, who was visiting for work - and he had never been to a SD before. He was overwhelmed at the large menu, but was happy with the turkey meal he chose (we went around a brunchy 1145-12ish time on a Sunday). I tried the Sweet Potato pancakes (YUM!) and hubs had a goat cheese omelete that he enjoyed as well. We love the never-ending coffee (Greenberry's - roasted in good ol' CVILLE!) and attentive service. read more

Have been here several times since we moved here years ago as our daughter is a huge fan of breakfast diners. Despite appearances, it is not really an old-school diner menu. It is a modern twist with a focus on locally sourced ingredients. Also, some of the dishes attempt to be healthier than traditional diner fare. Still, it comes close enough to really mesh with the 1950's diner decor they use. They have a small selection of local craft beer, which is a nice plus for a diner. Bring quarters for the jukebox at your table (I know, who carries cash anymore?) Our relatives love it when they visit from out of town. Over the last year we've had over half the menu and have had no complaints. They aren't trying to be another Denny's or IHOP, so temper your expectations before going if that's what you prefer. read more

Right next to my office, so there's always some kind of reason to pop over for brekkers or lunch. The menu is pretty much the same as all your other Silver Diner locations, and the quality is quite good. Yeah, it may be a tad pricey for a "diner" (relative to the old-school joints from back in the day), but you do get great service, friendly staff, and a wide selection of items using locally-sourced ingredients. I've enjoyed all the various item's I've ever ordered here, and there's a little something for everybody. I personally like the breakfast items (those hash browns and buttermilk biscuits, mmm). The server told me that the food was from local organic farms which as a West Coaster I totally support. The service was excellent as well. This place has never let us down for a weekend breakfast or brunch. The service is very pleasant and responsive, and you wont find better diner-style food in the area. This place serves all the greasy spoon classics like bacon and eggs, pancakes, waffles, milkshakes, etc. But they also have a lot of really tasty health-conscious items! UPDATE (1/27/2014). I am reposting this review as an FYI for patrons regarding health safety concerns with this restaurant. It saddens me, but my wife and I will never go to Silver Dinner again. In November 2013, Silver Dinner in Tysons Corner closed for a couple of weeks. I drive by it every night before work on the way to get coffee at Dunkin Donuts, and wondered what happened. I thought maybe it was due to weather or something, but it turns out Silver Dinner was shut down by Fairfax County due to a massive roach infestation! My wife and I loved this place, but we just can't bring ourselves to eat there knowing this. Maybe there is another side to this story, but getting shut down by the health department is enough to keep me away. Now, every time I drive by Silver Dinner and see the parking lot full, I can't help but think of people crunching on waffles that have had roaches crawling all over them. From a Fairfax Times article: "Virginia Department of Health food inspection reports that are publicly available online at www.fairfaxcounty.gov, show that Silver Diner's five Fairfax County locations have had a total of 40 critical violations since August 2012, including a cockroach infestation in September that was deemed an "eminent health hazard" at the diner's Tysons Corner location..." "In a health inspection report dated Sept. 24, 2012, it is noted that a customer at the Tysons Corner location filed a formal complaint after "receiving a live roach between the sandwich and fries." "The report goes on to say that "upon inspection of the facility, nymphs and adult roaches were noted on a speed rack, at the front wall adjacent to the waffle machines, by the handsinks, on a knife on a prep table, [and] on the walls by the entrance to the kitchen. The restaurant has closed and the permit is suspended." Silver Dinner is quite excellent! The wife and I usually go to the one by Tyson's Corner Galleria, which is quite often packed. Be prepared to wait in line if you go during standard eating hours, especially weekends at breakfast. I'm a creature of habit, so I haven't tried much on the menu. I absolutely love the Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches. Overall, they are consistently good, with tender steak and a very creamy combination of provolone cheese melted with a bit of mayonaise. I'm not usually a huge fan of mayo, but it blends with the cheese in a great way on this sandwich. My wife is a bit more varied in her selections, and she has liked everything she's ordered. My main criticism with this place is that the lunch servings are a bit on the small side (at least for my Philly Cheesesteak, anyway). Although, for some reason, breakfast seems to be more than enough. Also, I find their coffee to be very bland. Overall, I highly recommend. read more

When Sandeep is your waiter, be prepared to be taken care of well! Sometimes Silver Diner has been hit-or-miss but every time I have had Sandeep as a waiter my experience has been amazing! And no, he did not pay me to say this! I raved about him tonight to the manager, Anoja and she was quite pleased. I had a tomato mozarella sandwich. I was very impressed with the size and taste of the cheese. So many places get this wrong but my sandwich was perfect. Come to this place and ask for Sandeep. You will not be disappointed. read more

I came here for dinner last month and ordered the Tomato-Mozzarella sandwich which came with coleslaw and fries. The toasted ciabatta bread with pesto was topped with mozzarella, tomatoes, romaine and roasted red pepper which made for a tasty combo. The fries were decent too, only the coleslaw wasn't for me since it contained raisins which I don't like in coleslaw. I ate here five days ago. One friend had a beef burger. Another friend had the Beyond Burger. They both said the burgers were good. The friend with the Beyond Burger LOVED it. I had the lamb sliders. They were dry. I wouldn't get them again. So why 4 stars? The service. Our waiter, Ankit, was wonderful. He was attentive, warm and responsive. If I go back I would love to be seated at his table again. When I spoke to his manager, Douyen (sp?) she was warm and gracious. She appreciated us taking the time to compliment Ankit and also gave him kudos. Because of the two of them and because my friends enjoyed their meals I'd give this location another chance. read more

We went here last night after going to the AMC Tyson's to watch The Strangers and I must say I was very surprised by this place. The decor was fairly high end for a late night diner and their food selection was quite varied and health conscious considering it was a late night diner. The waiter was nice and had a good sense of humor even when dealing with my crazy friends and their many substitutions on their orders. Tried the crab & corn chowder at this location. It was ... not ... bad. Also had the buffalo wings ... awful. They were overcooked and barely warm at the same time with the ends being hard and dried ... which means it was done and sitting under a heat lamp or something that was not very warm ... or they overcooked it in the first place and don't know how to reheat properly. The sauce was decent. Best thing about the meal ... sad to say ... was the celery sticks that came with the wings. read more

So my friend and I had excellent service and what we tasted of the food was great!! But a ROACH falls right by my friends plate and ruined the whole experience. The manager complimented our meal of course but we won't be coming back to this location. Possibly trying another one near my house. read more
