This restaurant appeared to serve traditional chinese food and not the unhealthy NYC version. When you enter the shop there is a kiosk that you can order from immediately. I ordered the beef stew with bok choy and white rice and my dinner companion ordered the stir fried chicken with bok choy and noodle. The restaurant was clean and had plenty of seating. I ended up having to add some vinegar and soy sauce to my broth just to add a bit of depth of flavor. The beef and noodles were both well executed, but I think the mediocre broth is what really dragged the dish down. Additionally, $16 felt a little steep given the fast-casual vibe and its location. They have previously opened two other locations in Manhattan but given that we are not traveling into Manhattan that much this new location is good fantastic. A new noodle place opened in LIC recently! The interior is modernized, spacious, and has lots of seating available. Even the lights looked eccentric and exciting. It started getting pretty packed after we received it. I was surprised how many guests there were especially since this location opened not too long ago. The staff was so kind and welcoming. The ordering process was very simple and quick. The food came out quickly and utensils are self-serve. You are also welcome to take leftovers to go; just ask! You are also able to order ahead/pre-order on Yelp and Grubhub. I tried the pork and celery dumplings, shrimp and pork dumplings, sweet rice cakes, Hot and sour fish noodle soup, beef stew, and cucumber salad. My favorite was their beef stew. Their stir fried chicken and chili is easily my favorite dish. I get it medium spicy which I prefer so I can actually taste the food. I chose mild for mine but it was still spicy enough to make my nose run (I can't handle spice). Note that although the dish is fish noodles the soup uses a meat base. The soup contains pickled mustard greens and can be an acquired taste, but I am accustomed to it and enjoyed it. There was plenty of fish and was very filling. The noodles is indeed silky and smooth. The menu is simple with 16 choices of main choices from depends on your taste, the waitress was so friendly and took time to recommend which one is popular for us to try. In the end you can add the toppings, I picked pickles and fried egg which are extra cost but adding pickles are great. If you're ever looking for a quick, spicy, and delicious Chinese meal for lunch, this place is IT!!! I'm so glad this restaurant is a new addition to LIC! The food here has amazing Hunan taste and allows for customization per dish. Heads up, Silky Kitchen functions more like a cafeteria rather than a sit down "vibey" place. Imagine Xi'an Famous Foods but Hunan styled (and tastier imo). Each dish comes with spicy options (medium spicy is perfect) and carb choice (rice, noodles, and noodle soup). The dishes range between $10-$20 each for a big lunch portion. I asked the employee what she recommended (the employees are all super freaking nice), and she said the Hunan Beef, Pork and Pepper, and Shrimp/Chive/Pork Dumplings. We also got the Vegan Mapo Tofu (not included on the menu) and Cucumber Salad. First of all, let me preface this by saying I love Mapo Tofu. I order Mapo Tofu at every Chinese restaurant I go to and judge restaurants based on their Mapo Tofu. This place surprised me with how delicious their iteration of Mapo Tofu was. Usually the flavor comes from pork, but this dish had all the umami goodness despite being vegan. Star of the show for sure! Second place in this meal goes to the Pork and Pepper dish. Wow! While I heavily prefer beef to pork, the taste of the pork reminded me of authentic street food in China. Just get it! The Hunan Beef was pretty good and a little spicier than the other dishes. I opted to get noodles with this dish, and I loved it! The noodles are rice vermicelli noodles which are soft and have a little bit of bounce. My friend said that he'd prefer more 'qq' noodles (I think he meant with more chew), but I liked these noodles as they were. The Shrimp/Chive/Pork dumplings were pan fried, and we had some trouble getting them off the plate. I didn't really taste much shrimp in these, but these dumplings are standard Chinese dumplings done right! Though they were fried, they were not oily at all and were more like boiled dumplings. The Cucumber Salad had the right amount of tang with black vinegar, and a little bit of spice. It's refreshing and cuts the heaviness of the carbs. If you live in LIC, what are you doing for lunch? The beef stew is ok. I liked the braised beef because it was tender but the broth washed away any flavor the beef might have had. The broth in itself wasn't flavorful either. It's also an expensive dish at $18 and change. It also was a light meal. I was hungry couple hours later. There are taller counter height stools along the windows and in the middle of the space for taller people. It's a self service fast casual type of food experience. It is located in the area of LIC that is among a lot of hotels. This would be something different to try. I liked the variety of toppings and you get to pick your base of rice or noodles. I picked dry noodle mix...it came out wetter than I thought but I enjoyed it nonetheless. You get to pick your spice level. Overall the portions are fair for the main course. The appetizers are shareable. Dumplings are good. I would have wanted the dumplings a little more crunchy on the bottom as my preference. I had a good experience overall. The flavor is just right mixed with their dumpling sauce.
