Granted, this is just a run of the mill American Chinese takeout/delivery place in Astoria (not Chinatown or Flushing) - but even by that low standard this place is very hit or miss. You should know that there's a good chance the vegetables will be mushy and the medium spicy order will be nearly tasteless. The good news is it usually comes very quickly and the delivery man (I swear it's always the same guy) is very nice and friendly. Order it here from Grubhub via Yelp, however, and it will become clear that the "free delivery" is not - because "this restaurant charges a service fee for this delivery order." Wait - so it's free delivery... but there's a service fee for the delivery order. So you're saying the free part is a lie! I ordered hot and spicy shredded beef it was more like shredded carrots hardly any beef, spring rolls were good slightly oily but tasty hot and sour soup was good didn't like the mushrooms that were added im used to the shiitake type in most hot and sour soup but overall was ok probably won't order from this restaurant read more

They are currently my favorite Astoria-based Chinese restaurant, with amazingly good value (can get enough food for 2 people for less than $10), quality food, fast delivery and good service. Their meat and vegetables are not mushy and overcooked like some other places that I have tried, while the soup is flavorful. If they were here for this long, they have to be doing something right. The actual location's a bit run down and stuck in a time warp, so it's not exactly a place for fine dining, but it does tickle the nostalgia. And if it's a choice between cheap or fancy, I'll take cheap. read more

Great American Chinese option - They listen to requests, the chicken and batter they use for sesame/general Tso's chicken is superior, and they obviously change their oil much more frequently than other places in the neighborhood. Dumplings are fantastic, spring rolls are great and I've also tried their noodle dishes (lo mein / chow mei fun / chow fun) and their shrimp dishes ( sesame shrimp and shrimp and broccoli) - all were fresh and tasty. I've been coming here for who knows how long. It's your typical Chinese takeout. Definitely not the worst... I think the worst one I ever had may have been on 31st av..., I don't remember. But I digress. This spot - I now believe may have the cheapest prices in the area since everything's gone up. Lunch specials are usually well-portioned and extremely hearty. Orders for pick up in-person never take too long and I've never had a bad experience. Picture attached was the beef in garlic sauce lunch special. Decent amount of beef but the garlic flavor isn't strong. Actually, I don't think I even really tasted it. Recently went to get take-out from Sunrise on a busy Friday night. They were busy with many tables filled and their delivery men running in and out of the shop. I got the sesame chicken with brown rice. The portion of chicken they give you is enough for 2 meals. I go and pick up one of the smaller pieces of chicken with my fork, take a bite, it kind of crumbles and the entire piece of "chicken" is greasy fried batter. I push around the other pieces, maybe see another piece at least with a little chicken- not all dough. But a few questionable over-fried or weirdly dark pieces. Some of the chicken tastes old, only maybe half of the meat on the plate tastes fresh. Disappointed, but I thought, at least I can have the sauce with the brown rice. I took a bite of the brown rice at the beginning of the meal and thought- they really know how to make brown rice! It's always nice and fluffy. As I continue with dinner, I feel my mouth getting slicker and slicker. Wow this fried chicken, then sesame-sauced, chicken is pretty greasy! Maybe so, but guess what else is greasy? The-Brown-Rice. I dab the top of the rice with a napkin, ending up with little grain-shaped grease marks. It seems like they toss their nice moist brown rice in oil. What happened Sunrise?? read more

MAN, this place has got some insanely polarizing reviews on Yelp. Most who say they found something gross in their meals are folks who hopped on to Yelp for a "1 and done" review. I don't trust those folks. They've got a vendetta and are generally just out to get a place - especially when there are no pictures. Okay, now that I've gotten that part out of the way I can begin with my thoughts on Sunrise Chinese Restaurant...I just moved up the block from it and as such I've already been here a handful of times because I'm smack in between 2 or 3 Americanized Chinese Fast Food joints and I needed to pick a favorite for when those inevitable dumpling/scallion pancake cravings hit. Sunrise is IT. This is my new go to Astoria Chinese food joint! I gotten take out, eaten on site and experienced delivery with them. I go in and the guy who works the counter already goes "Hello! Steamed dumplings today?". I've been living up the block for about approximately 4 days, lol. In all fairness, I went twice the week before I moved and had, you guessed it, steamed dumplings! Whoooooo!!!! Fast food Chinese never really means excellent dumplings, but I found these to be significantly less dough-y than other places I've been to. It's nice to get non-Chinatown (or Flushing) dumplings that don't remind me of human ear (gross, but c'mon - you know what I'm talking about! Wait, what? You don't? Well you haven't consumed enough dumplings then) and whose fillings are actually juicy and flavorful. I've had both their steamed chicken & cabbage dumplings and their pork & chive dumplings and both were actually pretty good (considering that it's yanno, fast food-ish). The scallion pancakes here could definitely be crispier, but they're kind of thick which makes them filling and still yummy. I'm totally comfortable with giving them 4 Yelp stars. 2.5 stars - This is your standard neighborhood Chinese takeout joint that seems to always be open and has sticky floors and pork fried rice. And it pretty much fits the average standard mold on all counts. Its reliable, affordable, and fast. They have all the American favorites, like chicken and broccoli, fried rice, and wonton soup. And they speak good English and everything comes with a layer of oil on top. MMM takeout. Less than $5 for dinner with a wait time of 6 minutes. Really can't complain there. But because I'm Chinese, I do have to dock points for authenticity - Why are there carrots and cabbage in my goong chow ngow haok? (Beef Ho Fun). Granted - it was good food, but definitely not winning me over. In addition, the tables are set up to eat and get out fast - not really a place designed to linger, and that always feels kinda awkward when you're waiting for your meal. Been coming to this place for 12 years. The past year or so the quality and service is on a steep decline. There used to be a grumpy guy who used to bark out, "Whaya Want?!" Then after ordering, the food was ready in 5 minutes. The guy never wrote anything down and knew his stuff. They fired that guy or got rid of him-replacing him with a shrill woman who screams all of the time, never gets the order straight, sometimes forgot to even put the order in, and the food is never ready when they say it is going to be. She is just nasty. The prices keep going up and really isn't worth it anymore.
