    213. Mixed Vegetable in Garlic Sauce - Soggy vegetables in a gelatinous sauce.
    Keshia C.

This place also now goes by Astoria No.1 (perhaps they have rebranded due to the reviews) Decided to give them another try. Another reviewer below, Stanley is also correct about chicken and broccoli being mushy. Not sure what type of chicken is being used, but it is something that quite a few Chinese restaurants are guilty of despite this being one of the most popular American-Chinese dishes. I honestly question whether it is in fact chicken. All the vegetable dishes are covered in this gelatinous brown sauce and it is very off putting. Steamed dumplings and wonton soup were also flavorless. Eggrolls could also use some work. I will say although no pictured, they have managed to figure out a way to keep the general tso chicken crisp so that it arrives someone decently crisped, but protein inside is minimal. Much like other Chinese restaurants, again, it is not spicy in any way and includes no chilis of any sort making it indistinguishable from sesame chicken.

This delicious crispy Spring Roll (with shrimp & crab) for only $2.70 is a personal favorite!

This spot just opened, and it's some of the best Chinese takeout I've ever ordered. The seafood dumplings were delicious, and I can't believe the crispy fried spring rolls with shrimp and crab were only $2.70. This spot is gonna be dangerous for me. Delivery was speedy and friendly, and the food was a stupendously tasty value. I'm psyched to order from here again.

The reason I ordered was that I was craving hot and sour soup. It was so gross. Literally should be called sweet coleslaw soup. I've never had hot and sour soup that was mostly cabbage and unidentified protein, but here we are.

Awesome new Chinese food takeout on Astoria Blvd. Great options like the steamed pork buns that you can't get at many other takeout spots.

The restaurant is a few blocks from the main street of Steinway so it'll take a bit of searching. Going inside, the area is rather abstract. Pink flower wallpaper on one end and dry wall on the other, it's kinda off-putting but I didn't come here for the atmosphere anyway. Service was lukewarm, I got my order in but the two workers inside weren't too receptive and the menu itself is kinda barebones with most of their food being a bit more than I would like to pay for so I just settled on one order of Singapore Mei Fun. After waiting 10 minutes for my food to arrive, the Singapore noodles which are usually spicy were kinda salty but it was nothing a bit of duck sauce wouldn't fix. This one order cost $17 while not the worst Singapore Mei Fun...well technically it is, even though it's not horrible but I've had much better from other places for a stable price of $12. Yeah, a rather disappointing visit. Not the worst I've ever had but could be so much better.

I got the wonton soup and pork juicy buns. The soup was different from other wonton soups with the addition of cilantro and some nice balancing flavors for the salt, and the juicy buns were your classic soup dumplings with a very nice rich sauce to dip in. The dandan noodles my friend ordered were maybe my favorite, they were the perfect level of spicy and so flavorful without being overwhelming. I'd go back just for my own plate of those. The service was quite fast, and it's a cute little shop that feels like a small town Chinese restaurant. Very reasonably priced as well. Some of my favorite Chinese food I've found outside of Lower Manhattan !

Once she got to her destination, she opened the food container so that she can begin eating. As soon as she looked down, she noticed that there appeared to be something on her shrimp and was compelled to walk back to the restaurant and ask for either a refund or newly prepared food. The host/clerk (person behind the counter) told her it was grease and refused to either refund her or prepare a new meal. So my daughter sent me a picture of the food and I told her it looks like the shrimp has herpes! Never the less, she didn't eat it nor did she cause a fuss and Just walked out. The consequence of poor customer service usually results in a closed business. It's a shame how these restaurants come to our neighborhood/country and refuse to provide valuable customer service. I gave 3 stars because I'm pretty sure she went there before and it was good enough to go back.

As a local NYer who grew up with this type of comfort food, it's important to understand the distinctions. If you're expecting restaurant style food, do your research next time. When you're looking for a quick fix of stir fried foods, rice dishes drenched in glazed sauces, and crispy appetizers, this place did the trick. On my rainy day visiting my companions and bringing back takeout, this place provided us the food we needed. Most Chinese food takeout places would slather on so much salt, high sodium seasonings, watered down sauces, and very stale old cold rice. This place did none of this and they did a great job with their mixtures and flavors on my dishes. My only troubling thing was deciding what to get as everything looked good to order. Food bought on my side was the beef and broccoli - easy to tear through the beef bits, glazed and marinated nicely, and the broccoli was cooked well. My crab rangoons (what this place is known for) was extremely crispy and still hot when I arrived to my friend's place with melty cheese goodness in the center. Last is the shrimp eggroll - crispy and a bit bigger in portion than I usually get at other locations. No complaints on any items ordered and they all tasted fantastic. Staff is very nice and professional too. They also make sure to not miss out on giving any utensils or sauces to go with your orders. A better option for takeout Chinese food compared to the other neighboring places in this area as noted by my friend and Astoria local.
