The night view from our room
Lorena S.

Made a last-minute decision to go up to Solvang. Found the sideways in off of Expedia and booked it because it looked cute. This place truly is a diamond in the rough. It's right off of the freeway so it's a little hard to find. Our room was clean immaculate the bed was so comfortable. The chairs were lovely. The artwork was amazing. Really enjoyed our experience in the room. The entire hotel has been upgraded. The pool area is really nice. There's fire pits and places to sit at night during the day there's a lovely bar area as well as a up-to-date gym. Can't believe that we just picked this place out of the blue and it turned out to be such an amazing find. Will definitely be back, especially since they have complementary donuts in the morning.

Every year I head to Sunstone Winery around this time and each year I spend the night somewhere new. I liked the proximity to Solvang even though we spent zero time there, as well as the easy drive to and from Sunstone. Service at Sideways was exceptionally friendly all over the property. The place was clean, including the gym which was well equipped. Our room was comfortable and I appreciated the mini fridge and microwave. We were able to buy food on the way up for our picnic at Sunstone and keep it fresh for the next day. I appreciated this and it helped tremendously. Would I go again? Absolutely.

Watched Monday night football at this location. Texans vs Steelers. The Decor made it feel like a place for sports with an Irish old school touch to it. Place is Clean! Ordered beer and Wine. Received my beverages immediately by our bartender who was nice and professional! I did not get his name but he was on shift that day. BIG Kudos to him for being an excellent bartender that night. This place is a hotel with a separate bar. I checked in the front desk thinking the bar was inside. I also heard the Sideways Inn was in a popular movie. Lol Good place to chill and socialize. I recommend! Good experience

Room with king size bed

This place has received a lot of updates since it appeared in the movie Sideways - including the name, as it used to be called The Windmill Inn. Our room with a king size bed was clean, comfortable, and functional. It had a microwave, fridge with a separate freezer compartment, coffee maker, TV, desk, 2 armchairs, and more. There were a good amount of power outlets, and the free WiFi was fast enough for streaming. Noise isolation was not the best. While none of it was excessive, we did hear noise from a contractor crew chatting outside for several hours, people walking above us, plumbing noise from neighbors, and the muffled sound of the TV next door. Complimentary breakfast items are delivered to your door in the morning. You place your order the day before and you can select the items you want and the time you want them delivered. While nothing fancy, it was nice to get some basic items like oranges, eggs, orange juice, and a bagel. The common amenities were the best thing about this place. The lobby is really charming and makes a great first impression. The central courtyard has a pool and a couple fire pits, perfect for lounging. The fitness center was the second best I've seen in any hotel (the best being at the Hilton Tokyo Bay). The fitness center has several cardio machines including rowers, treadmills, ellipticals, and air bikes. There's also a squat rack, free weights up to 75 lbs, medicine balls, kettlebells, a punching bag, a couple weight machines, and more. This equipment selection is leagues above your typical hotel gym! 4.5 stars overall, rounded up because this place clearly takes pride in what they do. And the price was reasonable for the level of amenities. Maybe next time we'll see if we can get a room on the second floor!

The property has a spacious lobby, plenty of outdoor seating with cozy fire pits, a nice swimming pool with a Jacuzzi, and a complimentary breakfast served daily from 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. One of our favorite features was the peaceful setting. Behind the hotel is a small hillside, which gives the property a quiet, secluded feel surrounded by nature. In the evenings, we loved relaxing by the fire pits, enjoying takeout dinner paired with some local wines. The pool area was well maintained, with plenty of fresh towels and ample lounge chairs. The complimentary breakfast had a good variety of options, including bread, omelets, pancakes, yogurt, cereal, muffins, oatmeal, and fresh coffee. They also offer a 24/7 coffee station in the lobby along with complimentary apples, which was a nice touch. Our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The bed was very cozy, and the hotel was quiet at night, making it easy to get a good night's sleep. There's also a great brewery nearby that's worth checking out for good food and drinks. If you're planning to visit Solvang and Santa Barbara, I would definitely recommend staying here.

The price was affordable and we had booked a few days prior. We were welcomed by the night time Innskeeper, Joan who warmly welcomed us. We were very touched by the warm hospitality and how helpful she was (shared her recommendations for food places and gave helpful tips and showed us a map of the area) She had us checked in less than 10 minutes and we were sent off to our room. The overall room was spacious, cozy, and clean. We had stayed on upper floor. The bed was cozy, there was cable, and the towels were fluffy. The tap water tasted good (they do a great job with the purification) and the shower pressure was perfect after a couple hours of straight driving. There are no elevators so please be mindful of that! They have complimentary coffee and danishes from a local danish bakery from solvang. There is orange and cranberry juice for those who dont want coffee or tea. This is from 7 am - 10 am. The area its self has golfing for kids, a heated swimming pool and the inn partners with multiple local shops and areas which offer you a discount if you show the little "passport card" they give you when you check in. Aside from that, housekeeping is splendid. Our first time experience went well and we are so excited to book again in the near future.

In the end this was a wonderful option and our guests loved it! The sales staff were incredible through the entire process, shout out to Megan! She answered all of my calls and my many questions, and made the process so seamless and easy. I stayed at the hotel the night before our wedding and got to experience it first hand. Hotel was clean, rooms were nice and spacious, and the grounds looked well kept! I had a great view of the pool area. There is plenty of parking on the property as well. Multiple guests said it was a great hotel and they had a great stay, with many people specifically commenting on how the breakfast was delicious and the bar was a great place to hang out post wedding festivities. I am so happy with the end result and would personally stay here again in the future! So don't let the reviews scare you away, I'd recommend this hotel to anyone!

I wondered for a minute if the place had closed. It turned out I just hadn't received the check-in text for the contactless checkin. I called the local number, got a human, and she got me set up with my door code and emailed instructions in about 15 minutes. Everything after that was smooth sailing. Clean, soft but comfortable bed, lovely Danish decor, a modern bathroom with rainfall shower head, Malin & Goetz toiletries, bottled water, local coffee from Santa Barbara in the Keurig-like in-room maker, two glass glasses and two coffee cups, a modern fridge, new A/C. I had a moment with the A/C at 4am when it kept turning on and off, but once I figured out it was on Eco-mode, I turned that to regular and all was well. There's a white noise machine and the windows open. They've thought of everything. The desk space is a little small but it works (I had the Queen room). As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe. The famous Hitching Post II is only a four minute drive or 20 minute walk away. I would return to Hotel Hygge for sure with my lessons learned for an expected five-star stay!

Also, when you hit the "Check Mark" after entering your code, there is no audible confirmation and the screen turns off. You don't really hear the deadbolt move, so it's confusing if the door is unlocked. The AC is also noisy, but with ear plugs, it's not an issue. The cabins are well suited for families, with lofts or bunk beds for the kids and a separate bedroom for the parents. The pool is very kid friendly, and the playground, fire pits, and other amenities make it an easy and enjoyable place to spend a weekend. Unfortunately, it feels like the property has started to lean a little too heavily on its past excellence. The playground has missing or broken pieces, with duct tape and plywood being used as temporary fixes. Some of the cabins are also beginning to show their age, with visible water damage and general wear and tear that could use more attention. I don't necessarily mind a property feeling a little lived in or showing its age, especially one we have enjoyed for so many years. What matters more to me is the hospitality. I would expect friendly, welcoming staff and not to feel like I'm being nickel and dimed for something as simple as getting into a cabin that is already cleaned and sitting empty. We have also been disappointed with some of the recent management decisions. During our latest stay, our cabin was already cleaned and sitting empty when we arrived, but we were asked to pay an additional fee to receive the keys before the 4:00 PM check in time. On a previous stay, our cabin was not ready by the 4:00 PM check in time, yet a similar concession was not offered to us. Policies like this can make the experience feel unnecessarily transactional and tacky, and take away from the hospitality that has made Flying Flags such a great destination over the years. Our family loves Flying Flags and the surrounding area, which is why we have continued coming back for more than a decade. We hope management continues investing in the property and prioritizes the guest experience rather than focusing too heavily on extracting additional fees from customers. We would still recommend Flying Flags, but we sincerely hope the property receives the attention and care it needs so we can continue saying that for many years to come.

He took pictures and immediately reported it to Leah at the front desk. Leah said they were fully booked, which was confusing since she had just allowed him to choose a room. She did not offer any other options, such as a refund, cleaning the bathroom, or having him wait in the lobby while the issue was addressed. We later spoke with another employee, also named Anthony, who said housekeeping had left and that he needed to contact management. My son waited about 40 minutes in the room, only to be told a refund could not be guaranteed because the room was now considered occupied. Had he been instructed to wait in the lobby, he might have been able to receive a refund. We were promised a call from the manager the next morning, but no one called. When I followed up, Leah repeatedly interrupted me, offered only 25% off, and eventually hung up on me. I then contacted Guest Relations and still have not received a response. The dirty shower, lack of communication, and unprofessional handling of this complaint made the entire experience extremely frustrating. The fact that I came to these reviews and found multiple complaints about Leah being rude and unprofessional shows that this was not an isolated incident. Management appears to be aware of the ongoing concerns about her behavior and the motel's uncleanliness, yet has failed to address them or ensure that the staff are doing their jobs properly.

You recycled an old Original signed hotel registration guest card from "someplace" from 2005! Did you have another property with 28+ rooms? And WHY would you hold onto papers that long & why did you not shred it? You should be shredding guest reg. cards & NOT hand out people's personal info in ANY capacity! 2.) Other few negatives to note: I did not trust the cleaning skills. A soapy, used washcloth was left hanging on the shower pipe. There is a bit of mold at the shower ceiling, upper walls, floor corners & wall tiles that should be bleached & the ceiling should be painted with mold resistant paint. Room AC vent should be disinfected to prevent it from smelling like ammonia (urine) when using fan only mode. 3.) Note: Caught on my security camera-mgr opening rm door to look in & inspect--10 min after I left the property. She did not call me. I did not trust their cleaners & I did not want folks in/out due to Covid. I always travel with a security camera now after I had cleaners open my door to attempt to enter my room at an SD hotel, while I was inside sleeping (thankfully the big security latch prevented them from entering) ~~So pls do not enter rooms when guests are not there & you agreed to "not enter". You asked about needing service & we agreed to "NO Service" & that I'd throw my own trash in the dumpster & I'd request items as needed. Give guests a call-that's what cell phones are for. 4.) yes the towels are old & scratchy, but at least they appeared clean 5.)
