The rooms are huge and central location is great. Pretty quiet despite being close to the center of town. There's no front desk or lobby, just a phone number. Last time they didn't send me the access code so I was slightly delayed getting into my room, but otherwise the self service aspect is fine. read more

The hotel is beautifully decorated. However there's no Iive staff and though they leave a text number there's no response. The room is definitely worth it. Check in process can be challenging. They text me the same day of check in to ask me for my email and a credit card. I was not comfortable replying as I thought it might be spam. I waited until I arrived. I had to call a number, and provide my credit card for incidentals over the phone. I was hoping they would have a check in machine similar to vegas hotels since no live staff. It was pretty loud to hear as another group was trying to check in too. I am giving a 3 due to service. The balcony door's lock was not working. I text them when we checked in to report issue with no response. The hotel room was beautiful and pleasant. I loved the nespresso coffee, the lounge area. They also had a reading lounge. Everything was artistic with great color, very new and clean. Another issue I had was that I booked through a 3rd party and prepaid room when over night I received an extra charge notification. When I called in the morning around 6:30 am I was advised no manger was available until 7 am and someone would call me then. I waited until 7:30 am as no one called me I called again. I was advised they were having systems issues with their app. Since it was a 3rd party the app was charging me the 3rd party charge. Which was $50 less what I paid to the 3rd party. I advised them I had already prepaid. They advised me they would release hold in 2-3 days. I called the 3rd party to advise the above. They called Winston staff as they shortly after sent me a text. I do believe Winston was in error to charge me while I had already paid the 3rd party. The funds were released the next day. Keep an eye on credit card notifications if stay here. Other than the above issue and Check in service I would stay here again. The room was comfortable with the exception of the balcony door not locking. read more

This place has its highs and super annoying lows to it. The good: Stayed in the Clocktower room that overlooks the main park in town. Great room, huge, comfortable bed, massive bathroom with great lighting and a fantastic shower. Location was fantastic. Easy to get anywhere in town. The bad: Walls are paper thin. We were woken up super early to some of the worst pop country music coming in through the walls from the donut store nearby. I was also able to listen to the full conversation of the neighboring room while sitting on the toilet. The door does not lock behind you unless you hit the bottom right corner of the keypad (they do not tell you this) The light "switches" are all set to scenes that really dont make a ton of sense. one room will randomly turn off another room, or maybe it will just dim it. Ended up using the small lamps next to the bed or the one near the couch most of the time as they were just simple switches on the lamps themselves. You want Ice? you need to call someone to bring it from another location. (I understand the machine was broken, but this was still frustrating) No A/C in the room so they put a rolling unit next to the window in the bedroom. Only problem is that made it impossible to close the curtain/blinds in there so the sun is filling the room at sunrise. In the living room is one of those plastic Crosley turntables every hip, motel-6 converted into a boutique hotel has in them these days. As I assumed the needle was shot and it sounded like aluminum cans being dragged through gravel. Who thought that having no one on site was a good idea? We never received the text we were supposed to get to check in so I had to track someone down through the multiple phone numbers that tend to go nowhere. Once they finally sent us something it was almost 5:30. 1.5 hours after we were supposed to check in. When we asked for a late check in later that night they told us maybe 12 but we would have to contact them closer to when we were checking out. When we did that they only gave us an extra half an hour. Parking is terrible. The website says that "Each room has a designated parking space. Additional vehicles may be parked in city spaces on 1st street." There are NO designated spaces, its just grab what you can. 4 tandem spots that are all blocked by a single car and then a handful of spots that people can't stay within the lines of so if you end up coming back later in the evening you're on the street or parking illegally in the handicap space. Perhaps if there was someone on site, this could have been alleviated. All in all the place was physically nice, but the lack of anyone onsite made all the little things pile up. For the price I wouldn't recommend it to someone I would like to have a continued friendship with. read more

We stayed here on New Years' eve and I was able to book a room very last minute but it was pricey. We paid over $400 for our night stay but everything in the area was already pricey. It's a very spacious room and it was just right for my family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids). There's a separate sitting area with w TV in the living area. The bathroom is huge and they also provided 2 small bottles of Fiji water complementary which was a nice touch. Be aware that this a self service hotel so there is no front desk to greet you and they don't have a restaurant onsite. But there is a restaurant right outside of this hotel. I would stay here again if I was in the area since the rooms are all suites and it's centrally located. We were right outside of the park that had a light show for new years' eve so it was great to be able to celebrate right outside of our hotel room and head back quickly once we were done. read more

I really loved the design of the room - the colors are gorgeous!! And the amenities were great for a standard room. The location is smack-dab in the middle of town in a beautiful building, so when you leave you're right across from the park and around local businesses. My balcony overlooked the parking lot but it was still nice to have outdoor space! I'm not a huge fan of "invisible service" but it was super easy to enter the building and my room, and it felt tucked away even though it's right in the center of town. It feels like a very luxurious little place and very clean. My only issue was how crazy-thin the walls and ceiling are. They provide noise machines which are really pleasant (various sounds like "rainforest" and other natural options as well as white noise) but then I realized why they were there, haha. I could hear stomping feet above me and if anyone slammed a door the walls would rattle. Worst of all, the couple next to me left their tv BLARING for hours during the afternoon and evening. Someone nearby on the other side ended up banging on their door, with no answer. So I wrote the staff and they were SO helpful and prompt, very kind. They finally got in touch with the people who had, apparently (god knows why) left their tv on while they were out. The staff were able to go into the room and finally turn it off. So, even though that was excessive and probably doesn't happen often, it made me realize how thin the walls are. In any case, I was really impressed with how the staff dealt with it! Not their fault the building is older with thin walls. I also left some supplements there by accident, and when I got home I texted them and they offered to send them or hold onto them for a couple weeks until I was able to get there. When I arrived again to Solvang, I texted with them and they had sent the supplements to their sister hotel just down the street, and sure enough they were there and well taken care of. I really appreciated that! The hotel is a bit pricey (at least when I stayed here) but aside from the noise issues, I felt it lived up to it in design, amenities and location. It's kinda like renting an air bnb in the sense that there's no staff and no official check in - in a lobby. They send you a code on the day of your check in. They do have a number you can call or text if you need anything and they will get back to asap. As for the room it was very spacious and super cute decore (Looked just like the pictures on line) The bathroom was very large and the shower was very pretty and large too. We also had a view of the park across the street which was nice because they were decorating for Christmas. If you need any supplies there is a room down the hall with whatever you may need like extra coffee or toilet paper. First time at this type of hotel. There's a parking lot under the hotel that's covered which is nice but it's also tandem parking which sucks but we went during the week so no one blocked us in. The room was on the first floor which was nice but you can hear people walking in and out and closing the door. The room itself is very modern and during the week the price is worth it however during the weekend, the rooms start at $300 and up which I do not think it's worth that much but that's just my opinion.... There's no table to eat but there is a mini fridge and coffee machine which is nice but also no microwave. Pup came along so they had a doggy bowl out with some treats, a puppy pad, and Fiji water, not for us but for the pup which is super cute. I wish the shower had 2 shower heads cause they only had one in the walk in shower with no door so that was a little inconvenient along with the one sink and the toilet around the corner. Sort of a weird design but I guess it works. They had a sound machine which I loved, small little balcony but overlooking the parking lot - meh, and a TV that is really far from the bed which was also weird. We wanted to like this hotel, but the experience fell short for us, particularly around logistics and design. If you're a family with young children or a person with disabilities, this wouldn't be an ideal place to stay. Cons - the elevator was out of service our entire stay, meaning we had to climb 2-3 flights of stairs with a stroller and toddler and baby in tow. - most of the entrances seemed to require a physical key, which the hotel did not provide or set expectations about early on. For one of these entrances, you could reach around and push the door open anyway, which doesn't speak well to security - the lighting system in the room had poorly designed, over engineered UI - e.g., pressing "off" would not turn off the lights, sometimes pressing off in one room would turn off all the lights in the suite including the bathroom and startling whoever was taking a shower, and so on - what the heck was going on with the hvac system? This too was inconsistent. Our stay was during November. The AC would start blasting at 65F - and noisily so - in the middle of the night. - I'm quite surprised to see that check in has positive reviews here. Our check in experience was a little drawn out and overwhelming. - location is obviously the main draw, meaning you are close to all the action and noise through what seem like thin walls Pros - the remote staff were responsive enough, we were able to receive a houseclean on somewhat short notice - location is excellent - a very walkable central point of Solvang - room itself was clean and modern enough If I were a young single person or a couple without kids, this would be a fine place to stay. My wife and I stayed here for a weekend. The hotel is pretty, with good parking, clean, and the bed was comfortable. It's in a great central location, and despite not having a traditional front desk or anyone working there it was very easy to check in and out. Also, when we left I forgot two brand new expensive clothing articles in the closet and didn't realize until I got home. They had sentimental value to me and I was really concerned I would not ever get them back. The hotel staff was very helpful in tracking them down and mailing both articles of clothing back to me for a reasonable price. It would have been easy for them to say they didn't find anything in the room, but I really appreciated their diligence tracking my items down and getting them back to me. When we return to Solveng we would certainly stay here again, great hotel and great value for the money. read more

Amazing service! Went for our 10 year anniversary and my husbands 40th. The last Marcy was super sweet. She went above and beyond for us and entirely spoiled us which I was not expecting. Very very hospitable and made it a very romantic weekend. Our room had a record player, massive bathroom, large living area and she left us a bottle of wine. They do have an area in the hotel where you can purchase drinks and snack type items. Highly recommend as it's in the main downtown area so you have no reason to need to leave. Very awesome. In the heart of Solvang--very walkable, no complaints there. The room itself was quite basic and lacking in the luxurious extras and special touches I would have hoped for especially given the inflated Valentine's day pricing. At $545 for a one night stay, a complimentary bottle of something or box of goodies would have been a nice touch. The high reviews definitely set different expectations. The room and shared spaces were clean but I was underwhelmed overall by the accommodations and the exterior of the building. The invisible host also created added frustration. I received an initial confirmation phone call the night before with the check-in rundown. Unfortunately, I never received my check-in email (they transcribed the incorrect email) and my promised early check-in of 1pm, was not honored. I had to make several follow-up phone calls the day-of, to receive my check-in code. Additionally, we were not informed via website or otherwise, that the rooms don't have central heating or air conditioning. Not something I would normally consider, but the lack of this "amenity" made the stay less enjoyable. The hotel does have operable windows, and a portable AC unit, but this also makes it impossible to close the window. We relied on a portable heater for comfort for the chilly 45 degree evening. Due to the fact that we couldn't close the window, we heard the adjoining room's guest snoring all night, no doubt as a result of their open window as well. Bottom line, I wouldn't stay again and we grossly overpaid for a mediocre accommodation and less than stellar communication. read more

Very beautiful hotel in the heart of Solvang. Wonderful how you don't have to deal with anyone to get into your room. It's the morning of my 1 day staycation and I still don't know if there is an actual lobby to speak to someone. First off the rooms are gorgeous. Who would think that a room painted partly green could be so beautiful but it is. The room is impeccably clean. The bed is super comfortable and the pillows aren't too hard or too soft. Honestly, for me at least, the beds were way better than those in Las Vegas. Also the bathrooms have great water pressure for your morning or evening showers. Now for the one star subtraction: we likely would have been super excellent to have stayed here if the people upstairs didn't clomp around like water buffalo. We could also hear them talking faintly. So this meant to me that the walls are thinner than I thought. I kid you not the people upstairs must have been an entire family. I would guess with young kids with skateboards since they were evidently riding them in the room since we could hear the wheels rolling above our head. Perhaps management could hput parties of 2 upstairs and larger parties with kids downstairs first when possible. All in all if come back here for the location but I'd definitely see if I could get an upstairs room. read more

This is a new, standout hotel in Solvang, with impeccably spacious rooms and private parking in a routinely busy downtown. I spent my first three nights in Solvang, and couldn't be happier with my hotel choice. The Winston, while unstaffed, enables you to come and go via a smart key access code. The hotel is attached, from First Street, to Fitzgerald's Tavern, which I found convenient despite a surprising limited selection of Irish beers. In any case, the rooms are quiet, and you actually enter down a narrow, sloped driveway right near Fitzgerald's and park essentially out of site. Our room, No. 9, was on the second floor and was spacious, with a comfortable bed, large bathroom, and attractive, minimalist decor. (Our view out back was to a parking lot area near the exterior of the Belgian Cafe). This location, with its attractive and distinctive clocktower, is close to everything and easy to spot. read more

I hate leaving a negative review for such an adorable and comfortable hotel in Solvang, but my explanation will show why it was necessary. First the positive: the self check-in and location was great and easy. We were able to check in an hour early, which we appreciated, and our Room 4 was clean (or so we thought), beautifully decorated, and the room/lobby was easy to access with keyless entry. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was spacious. The room even had complimentary coffee and water for guests. The staff communicated through text and were responsive and sweet. Now onto the negative: not the fault of the hotel, but we stayed Thursday through Sunday and it so happens the trash is picked up on Friday and Saturday and our windows faced the alley where the dumpsters were located. We woke up both mornings at 6:45 am to the sound of a trash trunk beeping and dropping empty dumpsters - not fun. Wish their windows and walls muffled the sound better. Minus one star. The big dip in our review is because on our second morning (Saturday) I walked into the bathroom to find a small, dead roach btwn the shower and toilet. It was not the typical "oh it's a water bug" type of roach. It was the infestation type. AND on our way out of our room, we noticed another dead roach in the hallway of which I snapped a picture (although maybe not a very good one). The two roach appearances made me worry about bringing them home with me in my luggage and no matter how cute the room was or the great location or the attention of the staff, that is a deal breaker for me. I sent staff a text letting them know what I found and included a copy of a picture. They responded within an hour and offered to clean them up and offered us a bottle of wine, which I accepted (because honestly, why not). But I won't be returning to the hotel and until they spray for pests, I would not recommend. read more

To start off our visit they do not have a front desk check in and you receive a code via email , we never received one . Called their phone number and they were no help. We ended up hanging out in the parking lot until a lady who helps run things helped us out? Not sure why they would not just have a front check in . We stayed in the double king room which is right about some sort of really loud restaurant until about 9:30 so if you have small kids be prepared for them to be awake. Fan in the bathroom barely worked and the shower squeaked so loud the entire time it was on (water pressure was very soft as well) Beds are semi comfortable but the pillows sucked. A wonderfully designed boutique hotel and perfectly located for those that way to be a bit off the main road. The beds were very comfortable and all the amenities were well enjoyed. The only thing that was tough is commuting with the digital front desk. It's best that you call because texting takes a very long time. If you want to use the jacuzzi and pool, you'll have to use their sister hotel down the road. I'd recommend you driver there instead of walking. I would love to come back here and enjoy their space more. read more

I note there is no fee on other booking sites. Please be aware of the fee and maybe use a third party booking site. I'm giving this hotel only 2 stars for multiple reasons. One being is that check-in is at 4 and we didn't get into our room until after 5. We had travelled and were very tired. When I called I was told we'd get a discount for our inconvenience but that still hasn't happened!!! The room was beautiful and clean but we both got bit by something. We were just glad we stay one night. This hotel is also "self-contained" so no one is one the premises if you need something immediately. That's not something that I noticed when booking our room. Nice room and good location but.... The Winston is in the middle of things, right across from the community park, That's the good news and the bad news. First Street is busy during the day. The hotel sign is tiny and the entrance to the below ground parking is narrow. Even knowing what the building looked like, we missed the driveway on our first pass. If you like self-check-out at the supermarket, this place might appeal to you. If not (I do not) it will be a bit unnerving. This hotel is completely hands off. The reservation said that they would reach out with instructions for check-in "as the time of our arrival neared". I called them in the morning of the arrival date, as we were preparing to make our drive, because I hadn't heard from them. They explained that they reached out by text and email when the room was ready. Ok. They did that at about 2 PM. The instructions had a site map of the place and the code we had to use to get into the hotel and into our room, but it wasn't very clear, and we wandered around the exterior and interior hallways until we found our room at last. Here's where a person in the lobby would have helped a lot. It was a nice, clean, well-appointed room with good cosmetics, etc, and a comfortable bed. The location is within walking distance to everything in town. When we came back from dinner, I realized that the door hadn't automatically locked when we left. There was nothing in the instructions about that. We learned the trick only after we realized we had left it unlocked twice. The hotel was quiet the first night. The second night, with only three cars in the parking lot, we had guests immediately overhead. They were, active until almost 11 PM walking back and forth - it sounded like elephants. I'm pretty sure this building was a commercial building before it was converted into an inn. That would explain the lack of sound proofing between the floors, but it doesn't explain the stomping. When we got ready to check out, there was no procedure for doing that given. We finally just left. So, my advice is, get a room on the second floor if you are a light sleeper and don't go unless you don't want ANY personal service. read more

This rating is for the reservation confirmation process. They call you several days prior because they need to "ask you a few questions". They left a voicemail. When I called back the first time, it just rang and rang. When I called back the second time, the person couldn't get a simple email address correct. (I said, "F-I-L-M, film, as in cinema", and she said, "So, SYKL?"). That went on and on, until I said I'd just call back later. The whole process of having to get on the phone with an actual person three days prior to check-in is weird, but they make it actually painful. read more

What a nice surprise! The Winston is located in the heart of Solvang - everything is just a convenient walk away! We received a call a few hours before check-in letting us know our room was ready and a code was provided. We easily entered the building but were a little lost upon entry. A note in the lobby directing you to what rooms are located on what floor might be helpful but with only 15 rooms it wasn't too hard to figure out. The room was massive! The bathroom was massive. The shower was massive! With high ceilings and wood beams on the ceiling the room felt like it was meant for royalty. Everything in the room felt fresh and clean - no scuff marks, no worn carpet, no frayed furniture. There was a small station with water, coffee and tea available for our use, in addition to a mini fridge where we could store some items from home. The view from our room was not pretty (just a parking lot) and the garbage truck came on Friday and Saturday morning around 6:45 a.m. If you are light sleeper you will likely find this annoying. The hotel also has hardwood floors in the lobby and hallways. You will hear people's shoes as they walk by and you'll hear their roller bags as they come and go. Again, with only a handful of rooms the noise is infrequent but it is noticeable. We received a text upon arrival and one after our first night just to confirm that everything was good and to let us know how to reach anyone should we need assistance. We never needed anything because they had prepared for our every need before we even arrived. We were in town for the tree lighting celebration and Christmas parade. The hotel was right across the street from the park and nestled in between shops and restaurants. We could not ask for a better location. We loved at our time at The Winston and will be staying here again during our next visit. I highly recommend you do the same! read more

The location is good, and the WiFi and AC work great. The room is huge and very clean. And yes, there is an honor bar and a fridge in the room. Those are definite pluses! The cons are: The parking is tandem, so you might get completely stuck there. And though the contactless checkin thing is fine, there were a couple people a little confused when they got here. And it might seem minor, but right now it feels major to me-having a smart tv in the room with only basic cable and without any movie channels or access to Netflix or other streaming devices is sorta unacceptable. Especially in a place like Solvang without much nightlife. I've stayed in many hotels over the last few years , some of them cheap and pretty awful, and they at least had Netflix or something. After splurging on $400 a night here, having to spend the end of the evening watching reruns of Law and Order sucks. And the extra blanket in the closet is truly the scratchiest most uncozy blanket ever! Who picked that out?!? I received communication the day of my stay with easy check in instructions and a warm welcome from Marci! I brought my pup and she ensured that she was taken care of from the beginning with bowls, treats and a bed. Marci greeted me the first night with some special records for the record player which was so thoughtful. I loved all the special touches! From the chocolate in the room to the wine to the cheeseboard that Marci offered us on the second night as well. It feels like home at the Winston and you won't regret staying there! It's one thing for them to tell you not to expect anybody to help but it's another to experience it first hand. The hotel was clean and well-maintained. The concern I had was that it took more than five minutes to get hot water when we 1st arrived in the late hours. When we attempted to call for help, nobody answered the first time. Eventually, the water did get hot, but we experienced the same issue in the morning. Another five minutes for the water to get hot. Just very wasteful... The parking was challenging as well. Finally we had issues entering the building because a code was needed. Again that wasn't made clear but we figured it out. Cute hotel but just not for us.... Pretty cool place. The location was perfect. It was super clean, although it was a self check-in location it was pretty easy. I would definitely recommend this place and I would stay here again. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star is cause the bed sunk in on one side so my husband did not sleep comfortably and the windows and walls are super thin you can hear everything. read more
