A great addition to the Maplewood strip! It's tucked away behind Boogaloo and Crow's Nest in a gorgeous brick one-story. The furniture is handmade locally and the space has a pleasant ambiance. When we arrived, the only Side Project beers available on tap were Grisette and Biere Du Pays. I had the Grisette, which was a lovely Saison, especially for someone who is an amateur in drinking this style. It had a great mouth feel with a delicious bubble gummy Brett flavor. There were only three Side Project bottles available, as well. I'm guessing we came at time where there was a lull in releases since they cellar all of their beers. The beer selection was great, although I felt the prices were a bit inflated in comparison to some of the other local craft beer bars. The selection of Belgian styles is immense. They also offer a nice selection of wines and whiskey/scotch. No mixers available for the whiskeys. I thought this was a great touch. Such skillfully crafted spirits should always be enjoyed neat, on the rocks or with water. I'll be back to see what new releases Side Project has in store. After a day of drinking, my friends and I needed food. I took a look at their website to see that Side Project didn't have any, so we decided to pick some up from Sauce on the Side and bring it in. We sat down and after a couple of minutes, one of the bartenders came over and told us they didn't allow outside food. I asked,"So you serve food here?" and she said they don't allow food because they want people to be able to fully experience their beer, including smell. She said it said so on their website. I pulled up their site, thinking I must have missed it. But nowhere on there does it explicitly say "No outside food." It says,"Please visit one of our Maplewood neighbors for a meal before or after," which could be interpreted a couple of ways. The beer there is great, not that we got to try any this time, but the pretentious BS that comes with it is probably not worth it. We ate our food outside and went over to Schlafly for a great rest of our evening. read more

I came to St. Louis for this place. I love all of Side Project's offerings and I love, love the Cellar. Since we wanted a weekend away and I hadn't been back to St. Louis in over a year I suggested we go. This was the first stop... before the hotel! The atmosphere is so great and most of the employees are incredibly helpful and friendly. There are many spots to sit at the bar and there are large and small tables for groups of all sizes. You will find many, many different draft and bottles to choose from when you come here and I'm not sure you could really go wrong with any choice. read more

Additionally, he claimed that my friend made a scene, when In reality we had patrons coming to our table to discuss the state of beer. I rate brewery experience based on 2 major areas; beer and the atmosphere a brewery provides. - The beer was fantastic! Definitely worth a stop in. - The atmosphere was well kept, and offered a moderate amount of seating. There was some crowding.. I will make note that as a new patron I did not feel particularly welcome in this space. It appeared there was a crowd of regulars in the Cellar at the time of our visit which I can understand and appreciate. However, when I look to a new brewery I seek out experiences I have an immediate connection with and this location just did not do that for me, personally. This will likely not become a regular spot for me to visit. However, it is at least worth a try if you are brew-hopping in STL! Maybe your perception will be different! read more

My husband introduced me to this gem when I started getting in to craft beer a few years ago and it's quickly become one of our favorite spots to visit. The beer here was fantastic. I'm not a big fan of saisons generally, but the house beers were really good. With the barrel aging and blending it really made it a very unique experience. I only had time for one beer, but they had a very large guest draft list in addition to the 2-3 house beers that were offered. Was very disappointed last night when we stopped in for a drink. We were excited to try a new place in our neighborhood but the staff was rude, unwelcoming and very arrogant. They seemed irritated by any of our questions and short with answers. A guest next to us asked for an extra glass and then had to answer 20 questions before she would give it to him. Unfortunately the only patrons the staff seemed interested in speaking with seemed to be the regulars. We will not be back. read more

I love local beer and am particularly fond of Saisons which Side Project Cellar does extremely well. My only gripe is that they don't let you taste things first which is particularly tricky since the majority of their goodies are only available in extremely expensive 750 ml bottles (20-40.00 ouch!). I did have both of the offerings available by the glass and they were top notch. I have no doubt that the bottles are worth every penny. On top of their excellent home brewed offerings they have a great list of other beers and libations available. It is a cool space to hang out in with a nifty vibe and the baristas are seriously awesome. There is no food so this is the perfect place to hit up before or after dinner or in the afternoon on a lazy day. I will definitely be back and will be prepared to spend a bit more as I know the ROI will be worthwhile. read more

There is no doubt about the excellent beers available here. For such a small place, the selection in impressive, and there is great variety, both in style and price point. The true draw here is their house brews, especially the "Side Project" blends. I tried 3 different types, varying my flavor profiles, cost and ABV. All of them were excellent and worthy of being in regular rotation for any beer lover. I have to give a particular nod to the black saison (Noir du Fermier)- bold, smoky, tart, with a slightly funky finish (in a good way): just exceptional. So why only 3 stars? Frankly, the service is sub-par. 3 employees working, 2 of them never even attempted to be friendly. The other seemed to be a manager of sorts; she wasn't unfriendly, but there was no effort to engage. I will say- if she clearly knows you as a regular, she seemed to be at least a little friendly, but that was the extent. A high-end, cultivated selection tends to attract like customers- this place would benefit greatly from an effort to make them feel welcome and included. Instead, the general vibe seems to be you are lucky if you get their attention. Scanning through the other reviews it seems I am not alone- hopefully Side Project can make some adjustments so that the service matches their excellent product. read more

Side Project Brewing - The excellent Noir du Fermier - Breweries Near Me - Maplewood, Missouri

I only recently learned that there are several excellent craft breweries in St. Louis and Side Project is a great example. It was packed on a Wednesday at 4:30pm, which really speaks to it's popularity. I tried 5 beers (4 draft and one bottle), and while I can't remember their names, they were all farmhouse ales and sours ranging from good to great. Most of the draft beers were $8-10 and my four half pours totaled ~$21 after tax, meaning each one must've cost slightly more than half price of a full pour, which is pretty standard. I also love that they have board games and playing cards if you want a change from just talking. I ended up playing Connect Four with my sister, and learned that she was much tougher to beat as an adult than as a child... read more

The bartender took the time to help us explore the diverse beer selection and gave us a great mini-tutorial in the process. The whiskey selection was also great with a nice emphasis on STL spirits. We checked this place out on Saturday night. Great beer selection and I liked that they paid attention to the different serving temps with the different styles of beer. The atmosphere is also nice with lots of seating for a small space. That is were my fondness ends. Maybe I'm spoiled because I work in a specialty store that sells craft beer but the prices seemed high for the serving they gave you. The way the bar is set up makes getting your beer hard and they don't have any waitress out on the floor so everyone is trying to get to that little bar. The worst part is the service. The bar tender was nice but when last call came, at 10:45, that's right 10:45, some girl came around and was kinda funny, and not in a funny way, about us asking about the early closing. Yes I think 11 is early for a bar to close in STL. We were informed that they were a "tasting bar" that didn't "encourage people to hang out". "We're here a lot and need to sleep sometimes..." Is what she said to us. The weird thing is they didn't serve tastes they served full glasses and bombers of beer.... Wow. As a Michigander and craft beer aficionado, I have high expectations for breweries. I wasn't expecting much on my visit to St Louis - after all, they're known for Budweiser and there aren't many craft breweries on the map - but then we stumbled on Side Project. Their beers are top notch. Everything is barrel aged, and many of their beers are sours. My first pour was the nitro Base Weight porter. It was absolutely lovely. The Foedre Fermier (blend #2) was also fantastic. But it was the Pulling Nails (blend #8) that really took the cake. This tart raspberry blend was a little pricey, but worth every penny! As for the facility itself, it's small and a bit eclectic. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable but not overbearing. We took some bottles home and every single one we've tried so far have been wonderful. I look forward to visiting again someday. St Louis, you have an absolute gem here! read more

Beer selection is top-notch. Side Project's beers themselves are top-notch. This a bonafide beer destination. Well worth coming very out of your way for. As in, from across the country. The service is great, they have games you can play, beers are served at their correct drinking temperatures, and the bar setup is different and interesting (2 separate 2-sided pyramids, basically). Jimmy John's is down the block, and since I can't get that at home, that's a huge plus for me. Perhaps the most noteworthy thing about Side Project Cellar though is that it is pricey. Especially for being located in the Midwest. It is New York expensive. I paid $40 for a 750ml of Black & Wild. It was one of the best tart beers I've ever had and I knew it was going to pricey coming in, but, at least for me, the prices do prohibit me from trying everything I want to try. The draft prices on the other hand, aren't so bad. Less than typical NY pricing. Would definitely come back. read more
