Upon being seated at the Crow's Nest yesterday, we were informed that the deep fryer wasn't working and that, because we were a group of more than eight, we would not be allowed to split our checks and would be charged an automatic gratuity. Not only were we not granted an exception on the checks as consolation for not being able to order french fries, there was no indication that this had even occurred to our server. This is precisely the level of temerity we need to inculcate in young women in our society, and I'd encourage her to apply for a job at the women's-only sports bar a few doors down if and when it ever opens. It'd be tragic if she wasn't there if and when I return, but I'd appreciate the fact that she has a greater mission. Hopefully, the deep fryer is working. It being out of commission naturally limited the number of things on the menu we could order. We were only told that we couldn't order anything that required a deep fryer, not given a modified menu or anything. I started going through each item and imagining how it might be prepared, but I couldn't muster the psychological bandwidth to continue. Hit my Cash App if you appreciate the amount of unpaid emotional labor I was compelled to contribute. It occurred to me that I might just get a burger and a side salad, but then I saw that they carry a club sandwich. I love a good club sandwich, and I figured it might make for a light, refreshing alternative, given the weather. There's an option to get a cup of soup for $1.50 extra as a side with your sandwich (no, they didn't offer to eat the charge), and I figured that might go well with my sandwich. I was kicking myself when they brought out someone else's order with the side salad. It looked really good. The Frisco Burger, or whatever they're calling it, looked good too. Meanwhile, the BBQ Beef & Cheddar Soup--the soup du jour (that's French), according to Flo--looked gross, like something your dog might cough up. But damn it was good! It was more beef than anything else. A large bowl of it might actually be too much food. (I'd still eat it, natch.) The overall flavor profile was along the lines of a good french onion soup. It was a reminder that I need to be ordering soup in restaurants more often. I wish the club sandwich was cut into little triangles and fanned out on the plate in some elaborate configuration, like at a place where rich old ladies have lunch, but I guess that wouldn't have been in keeping with the theme. Instead, it was served on the world's thickest Texas toast, with the world's dullest steak knife protruding from its center. This sounds like hyperbole, but I may have honestly been served the equivalent of half a loaf of bread. It was much more bread than I required, but at least it was fresh and delicious, as were all the other ingredients. Turkey used for sandwiches is almost never remarkable, but this was surprisingly great, as good as anything you'd get served as an entree unto itself. Nothing about this place suggests that it would have such good food, but it just goes to show you can't judge a book by its cover. The decor, the overall vibe and the lack of hospitality might not be for everyone, but don't let that deter you. read more

Dry, bland, and somehow bold enough to charge me an extra dollar for more mayo -- because nothing says "premium burger experience" like a condiment upcharge to make it edible. My husband's Pork Pountine? Imagine fries sprinkled with a few bacon bits like confetti at a party nobody wanted to attend. We came in excited because Eat Crow in Soulard sets the bar high. Unfortunately, Crows Nest feels like it's cooking for someone driving in from Chesterfield who asked the kitchen to "tone it down." If you're craving the real deal, do yourself a favor: go to Soulard. This nest still needs a lot more feathers. And to the influencers calling this place "amazing" -- do better. Recently tried Crow's Nest again and waited more than 20 minutes hoping to order with the server. Didn't get to order beverages, appetizer or entrees. When we first arrived, a server informed us she would be right back to wipe our table off but she never came back. She greeted another couple who arrived 10 minutes after we did. Ordered the Ranchero with steak. The fried eggs was made to perfection - not over cooked but not runny. The salsa had a good kick to it. Lucky for me the friend who I was catching up with had a lengthy story which allowed me to eat continuously, while giving non verbal Q's that I was listening. For those that haven't been here, the place has a death metal thematic decor and so are the tunes. But have no fear if you don't like death metal, you can choose to seat outside where the music isn't as loud. If you like death metal, you'd feel at home here. Public parking lot in rear. Came here for happy hour with coworkers to decompress and chill. The vibes in this place were low key and laid back. There is plenty of parking across the street as well as some parking directly in front, but limited to 2 hours. We sat at the bar. There are also some booths you can sit at. Based on what I read from the menu I thought this meal was going to be more on the basic side but I was definitely wrong, there was nothing basic about this dish. Theac and cheese had a deeper flavor profile than other Mac and cheese dishes I've tried. Also the hot honey chicken was a perfect blend of sweet and spicy with a crispy outer layer. We were looking for a brunch spot on a rainy Saturday and ended up on the covered patio at the Crow's Nest for their "Metal Brunch". I had an Irish Coffee to warm me up, and it was standard but hit the spot. I had the Eggs Beni which were just alright. The breaded and fried poached eggs were a bit too much for me, and the fried capers made the dish too salty for my taste, so I ended up trying to avoid them. The hashbrown casserole was good but a much tinier serving than expected, so I wouldn't say they are worth the upcharge. My bf liked his Breakfast Sandwich, and the Brunch Burger sounds good, so we may be back to try it out again at some point. read more

I went to the Crow's Nest for dinner earlier this week and met a friend there around 7:30. Since neither of us had been before, we did not know what to expect. When I walked in, they had a "seat yourself" sign, but there were not any tables available inside so I made my way to the back patio area where they had it covered and heated. My only complaint is that smoking is allowed out there on the patio so it was not the best atmosphere for dinner, but it was too late, we were already there and seated. The server brought us a cocktail menu and some food menus. This is typical bar for in my opinion, but the cocktail list was nice and they had some good options for cocktails. Our server took our drink orders and gave us time to look at the menu. Once the drinks were delivered, my cocktail was tasty, but my friend said his margarita was just too sour so while we had hoped for the server to come over, she was missing for about 10 minutes as she was slammed with other tables and running food and drinks all over the place. When she did come to the table to check in, my friend asked for them to add something to the margarita so that it wasn't so sour. She also took our food order at that time. I asked for the macaroni and cheese since it was the only think on the menu that I wanted to eat. Other menu items were okay looking, but nothing really caught my attention. Once the drink was remade it was brought back over by the server and my friends said that it tasted better. And then a few minutes later our food arrived and we ate our meals. His sandwich was the turkey club which he enjoyed, but made a comment that the truly and cheese were cold while the bread was toasted so he wanted to take it home for lunch the next day to reheat it and toast it properly. I came here on a Saturday morning so it was very slow service. We chose to sit on their patio which I had no idea until we were already seated that it allowed smoking. Bleh! We were seated at 10:39am. Our waiter came to us 20 mins later so by then we knew what we wanted to eat and drink. We asked for water too. We received our alcoholic drinks at 11:05am but not any water. Our food arrived at 11:16am. I know this may sound strange but I really loved that they grill the breakfast patties. It had a smokey taste to it. There were dried cranberries in the berry mix on top of the french toast I ordered so definitely an interesting take. There was plenty of custard sauce too.
