First off, where are all the Cantonese places in Elmhurst?!!?!?!? There are definitely a lot of Cantonese people living in Elmhurst but only a few Cantonese places in the neighborhood. We need more like Shun Won. It's cheap and very tasty. Secondly, why two names? Shun Won...Shun Wong..same thing. The bulk of the "over rice" dishes fall in the $4.50 to $5.00 range. The more Americanized dishes like Orange Chicken over rice is $5.50. The owners of Shun Won/Shun Wang are the old owners of Wing Wong that was on Lafayette Street in Chinatown Manhattan. It might have been about 20 years ago! They used to make a wicked Cantonese style Chow Mein (noodle dish). But at Shun Won/Shun Wang it's too expensive to try. I also used to like Wing Wong's fried chicken wings. I have to try at Shun Won/Shun Wang to see if it's the same as I remembered it from Chinatown. Well I an definitely coming back here for more Chinese takeout because it's familiar and cheap. read more

Okay, okay.. You got your footing and have become the absolute shiznit! I am so excited to have a local version of Big Wong (minus the tourists) in the 'hood! The dumpling and congee soups are awesome and the meat varieties have improved drastically. (We actually dine in/take out from Shun Wang 2-3 times a week now!) PS: Are You Shun Wang or Shun Won? For what it's worth, yes, this place does serve up some decent food and you will get full from $10. Across our table I saw customers are a fan of their roasted meats but I wasn't here for that. My meal consisted of wontons and beef brisket/stew with ho fun. It was okay. The wontons honestly tasted funky to me, but since I didn't have any stomach trouble then sure, it was not bad. I was slightly disappointed considering it's a Cantonese joint but oh well, not all places are meant to be exceptional right? read more

Cheap, fast and good sums up the experience here. All the great taste of chinatown without the traffic and parking issues. We have been here numerous time and they have the best steam rice noodles which is nice and soft. This time we got 2 noodle soup and a fried dough rice noodle for only 13.00! Shun Wang is one of my go-to spots in Elmhurst for roasted duck and roasted pig. The stuff is just on point. Shun Wang is your typical chinese restaurant. It's got the roasted duck and crispy pig just hanging up in front of the window for people to look at while the inside is sort of grimey looking. However, the best tasting asian spots (that won't break my bank) are usually dirtier. When you walk in, the front has a take out center where most people take their items to go and to the left, there is a sizable seating area that can accomodate small and large groups. I came here with a friend and we ended up ordering: 1. Wonton Noodle Soup with Roasted Duck - Wontons are made from scratch and are pretty darn good. Roasted Duck is just too good to be true. The oil from the roasted duck dropped makes the soup better. The noodles are also hand pulled so that's a big plus. For a whopping 7 bucks, you can't beat it. 2. Congee (Thousand Year old Egg one) - This is an unknown secret here on how good this is. This item sells out fast so get here early in the day, especially on weekends. It's super flavorful and there's plenty of stuffing in it. Can't go wrong for 4 bucks and you get a huge bowl. 3. Roasted Pig - If i could eat this everyday without having a heart attack or getting fat, I would. It is that good! For the price and quality of food - you really can't beat it! Don't expect excellent customer service or a clean spot. It's not going to happen but you can expect the food to be on point! TIP - make sure to get their early. Things tend to sell out fast especially the popular items! read more

This is my favorite Cantonese place to grab lunch in Elmhurst. They offer so much variety at such a cheap price. The portions are more than worth what you pay for. One of my favorite Asian noodles are lai fun and this place gives you the option to pick the noodles you want. I always get lai fun because I like the smoothness and chewy texture this noodle has. If I'm not getting noodles, I go for either their congee or dishes on rice. There are a lot of places like this in Chinatown and they're all pretty similar. If you enjoy Shun Won in Flushing or Big Wong in Chinatown, you will like this place too. While the food is satisfying, this is another place where I would prefer to get the food to go because the inside doesn't look the cleanest. read more

Brand new Chinese restaurant in Elmhurst, Queens is always some exciting news. This restaurant is similar to the chain of Big Wong's in Chinatown. They have the typical options of roast pork, duck, etc that are all really good! I had a quick meal here and tried the wonton noodle soup, roast pork noodle soup, and fried bread wrapped with cherng fun. Everything tasted familiar and similar to what you would expect, nothing spectacular. Service was attentive enough. The only issue I had with this place was the cleanliness of the restaurant. For a new restaurant, it sure doesn't look new! But the food is acceptable quality and for the price, it's great for grabbing a quick fix! read more

I think some people are a bit bias or harsh, especially someone who has made one mean review, this are hard times for all, be kind or skip. First it is a typical Chinese restaurant, nothing fancy even if was pass norm period. They are efficient, quick and busy. Yes, the people are not polite and some probably do not speak English well; that is what makes some NYC establishments charming to keep around. It is busy. a good sign, you want food that turns over quickly l and keeps the kitchen heat churning. Their food is fresh, people come for the congee, prepared meat, and noodles; it is the few Cantonese restaurants left, especially in Queens. One day, we will miss having a variety of providence cuisines. You can preorder and go pay but they are pretty quick if you are not ordering an entree. read more

When you're here for take out, make sure you already know what you want. The ladies that take orders and run the show are no joke. They can do 50 things in a hot minute. The breakfast items are made to order. Pretty fresh. I hate a small congee and a shrimp roll for $5. read more

Came here twice. Both times the crispy skin roast pork and char siu. Both was dry. Purchased on a Sunday twice and both was dry.

This review is for the take-out service only. The restaurant is separated into two areas, a seating area and a take-out section where they can prepare any dish the restaurant has to offer and cut up BBQ meats by the pound. My mother actually introduced this place to me and I was so happy she did so. There seems to be a shrinking number of places to get this type of food in the Elmhurst area so I was glad this one was close by to my mother's place. The take-out service is fast, efficient and super friendly. Even better? Purchase about $20 and they'll take a card too in case you forgot to visit an ATM (as I had) but of course they have to charge you tax. Fair enough in my book. So what have I had? Three things: BBQ Roast Pork Nowadays BBQ roast pork is easy to find around NYC, but finding a *good* one? Not so much. For me, a good roast pork has a sweet and savory flavor. Some toasty edges where the sugars of the BBQ sauce have caramelized and of course, moist and tender meat. Shun Wang manages to fulfill *all* these criteria, which is a rarity nowadays (I only know of two other venues that do the same, and on is in New Jersey!). Roast Pork (with crispy skin) This is a totally different type of pork dish than the BBQ roast pork. The tough part here is not getting meat that's overly dry and tough. Also, the skin needs to be crisp, not chewy. Once again I can happily report that this place does this dish perfectly with the salty flavor one expects to boot! Soy Sauce Chicken A good soy sauce chicken should be tender, almost slick in terms of mouth feel. The skin should have absorbed the soy flavors while the meat has a hint of it. The meat should be tender, not too chewy. Once again Shun Wan hits every mark! I haven't done the "sit down" meals here yet but I suspect they're just as good (hence the one star I've left off). If you want excellent take-out, this is the place! read more

Elmhurst abounds in ethnic Asian businesses and restaurants, with the crowds to show for it, and making the drive down Broadway a painfully slow one at most times.  The diversity, typical of Queens, is stunning.  In any given row of restaurants, there might be Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Indonesian, and more. Unlike the business district in Flushing, Chinese restaurants here are a minority, but it is home to the first Shun Wang, a rare find of Cantonese food, its owners reportedly transplants from Manhattan's Chinatown.  There's now one on Flushing's Main Street too. It's a small, casual restaurant; no potential as a banquet hall.  Their greatest draw are their siu laap and siu mei, Cantonese-style cooked meats. Hanging prominently at their windows, there's only a small room with the meat takeout counter in evidence upon entering.  Get on line with the rest of the crowd to order succulent roast pork with thin, crispy skin, glossy char siu with burnt ends, tender roast duck, smooth soy sauce or ginger scallion chicken, and other offerings like cuttlefish, chicken wings, and more.  They offer whole roasted baby pigs in different sizes, priced accordingly, if ordered ahead. If eating in, take a left to reach their small dining room.  For breakfast and lunch, there are good variety of noodle soups, congee, and decent rice rolls (all likely to complement a plate of their meats).  Beef chow fun noodles is tasty and stir-fried well.  Shun Wang ably executes these comfort foods. For dinner, simple Cantonese cuisine is offered, not yet tried. Service is typical casual Chinese: brusque and efficient.  For a big takeout order made a week early for a party, the manager was helpful deciding on the right amount of food, thorough with the organizing, and pickup was seamless.  Good place to have Cantonese food in Elmhurst. read more

If you're looking for traditional cantonese food look no further. This is basically the comfort food that I grew up eating. Congee, wanton noodle soups, and rice dishes. The congee here is on point! My family doesn't even try to make congee at home anymore since it almost always never turns out like the restaurant and for such a good price why go through the hassle! Today we ordered the roasted pork and chicken over rice. The roasted pork was amazing! The meat was tender and well flavored there wasn't a piece that was over cooked and too hard to eat. The chicken pieces were small but meaty. As we were eating water from the air condition vents dripped onto our dish! We told the waiter and he promptly replaced the dish for us. :D read more

Roast duck. Roast duck!! Crisp skin, soft and flavorful meat, cheap prices!! This place gets a line of about 5 people deep even on weekdays. That's a good sign that this place is delish! It's a great solid go-to Chinese food. If you like bouncy long noodles, definitely get lai fun a try! It's thicker than spaghetti, but it's rice noodles. My family also likes their rice meals, at $5-6 it's inexpensive and you get a lot of well made food. That's definitely a win in my book. Shun Wang - Barbeque Near Me - Elmhurst, New York

Ever since this place opened I have flocked here many a time for cheap, solid cantonese fare. It feels like a place I have frequented in the past with some of the staff originating from Big Wong in manhattan. I know that I can depend on this place to get a good plate of roast pork or roast duck just like at Big Wong. The dishes I seem to always keep ordering are the roast duck wonton hor fun noodle. I like the taste the hor fun noodles lend to the broth and the comfort I get from eating these wide white softer noodles. But their traditional egg noodles are also very good- slightly wavy and thin and goes very well with the pork and shrimp wontons. I like that the wontons are not overcooked and the skin remains firm enough to cover each tasty morsel. I sometimes get roast items on rice also so I can enjoy the crispy ends of the charred flesh or flavor of the skin from the roast pork or roast duck and not diluted by any broth but sometimes it is a difficult decision to make on giving up the wontons and noodles when I am here. Such tough decisions! If I get here early enough I order their rice crepes with beef or shrimp covered in a sweet soy sauce. Who needs to go to a dim sum parlor. I can get pork AND my rice crepes here. Congee is always a good choice for days when I just want to get food in my belly. No chewing saves you time just like how Takeru Kobayashi does it. My teeth just get in the way of the food getting to my tummy faster. Just slurp your way to the bottom of the bowl. This congee rice porridge is good for when you are feeling a bit under the weather and makes a hearty breakfast. My favorite type is the sliced fish. The fish meat is also very soft and the flavor of the fish and green scallion is infused throughout the porridge. The congee served here is best complimented by their fried cruller. A chinese donut the size of a handbag or as long as an arm. One is sweet and one is salty and turns out I need to go buy a handbag big enough to fit both in now. It can break apart into two pieces big enough for sharing which you will need to do because its huge. Some people take a bite of the cruller and sip their congee and some people dip it into the congee itself. Theres no wrong way of doing it as long as it ends up in your mouth. Because its a donut it can be a little oily since it is fried so keep a napkin at the ready for wiping your fingers. I always get one of my favorite rice dishes here too- beef with green peas over rice. I order this a lot at chinese restaurants and is always pleasing to my belly when I just want something simple but good. This place is not glamorous on any level, be prepared to get your food flung on the table and having to share a table with others as it is pretty narrow in here. But if you are feeling fancy they do have a cheap twin lobster meal you can order here. They also have family style dishes as well like a whole fish but stick with their myriad of noodle/ rice dishes and roast items and it will do just fine. read more

Sad to see this place turn from one of the best places to eat to absolutely one of the worst. Arriving at 6 pm, we were able to get a table immediately. When I got there, I saw many vegetarians, Chinese families, and also visitors from other locations. It is also a great place for lunch and dinner. I even saw some people sitting alone, so you do not feel odd eating by yourself. I would say that it feels like Chinatown but in the middle of Elmhurst. If you like Hong Kong style fare at a fair price, then you have arrived at the right place. The waitstaff are helpful and can speak English and also provide suggestions. Here you can get the sup chow ngau haw which is beef wide flat noodle. It is not only a huge portion, but it has this deliciously rich sauce and is comprised of beef that just melts in your mouth. Another favorite is the ngau laam mein which is a Hong Kong style beef noodle. My parents also wanted a vegetable and had ordered the dau miu which is pea pod greens. Now, this dish was cooked just right with fresh garlic and oil. For the whole table, we ordered some roast duck, roast pork, and squab. All these meats were scrumptiously delectable and well prepared. Shun Wang has the meats prepared early in the morning, and if you are not squeamish, you can see them hanging on hooks right as you come right in. If you are on a diet, then I recommend you get something with vegetables. The difference from last time is that the bathroom is much cleaner. Another suggestion is that after 7 pm, it gets packed, so arrive early to get a nice table, or else you may be asked to share with another group. I do love this place, since it has a great friendly vibe. read more

I've been here 3 times now and each time I left feeling dissatisfied with my experience... I typically order some type noodle with a serving of roast pork added to the noodle and each time the broth came out luke warm... and there's never enough soup. I guess since traditional canto restaurants are a rare site in Elmhurst, they get a star just for their existence.. one more star for offering affordable options for lunch, but in terms of the quality of their food and the cleanliness of the place, I'd say, eat here at your own risk! read more

Really ? 4 stars this place has. Embarrassing staff. No sense of real business. Two men (who didn't even wait out table) HAGGLED for five minutes over the tip! Upset because we didn't give 5 dollars for a 17 dollar meal! Literally I I had to say "I am still eating here". As he watched over me. Two Asian men with glasses. I clearly don't write reviews but I was so upset I had to. The place looks like a dump I'm honestly shocked it's in business. Tips. Credit card min is 20. Apparently no debit? Ok Was told tip is "cash" only. After explaining we had no "cash" he told me to go to the atm to get.... across the street.... while my wife stays "Incase you try to no pay" When I finally said I'm not going to the atm I was told it can be put on the bill. But they have to charge 3 extra dollars because my bill was 17. So they got a 7 dollar tip essentially. Really embarrassing place to eat. Got takeout of 4 dishes - a 3 jewels trio rice (one of the trio was a fried egg and you get to choose 2 meats off their list - roasted pig, roasted duck, cha siu, and soy chicken), seafood rice vermicelli noodle, eggplant with beef and soupy beef wide rice noodle (濕炒牛肉河粉). All of this for ~$35. YUMMY and so affordable. The beef wide rice noodle came in two containers. One with the starchy soup and the other the rice noodle which you pour over when you get home. It was delicious and many pieces of beef. The 3 jewels trio rice - we got the soy chicken and char siu. Both were good but we only got 5 bony pieces of chicken but around 10 slices of char siu. The soy sauce over the rice was so good I wanted more of it! It also came with some veggies and half an egg. The seafood rice vermicelli noodle was ok. It had some roasted pork strips and shrimp and pickled vegetable. Good value but I think I prefer the Singaporean rice noodle version where it's a bit spicy and has the curry flavor. Lastly, the eggplant with beef over rice. It was so-so, but definitely lots of eggplant and beef slices. I'll be back to try other dishes. A bit of a wait since there were lots of people doing take out. read more

I ordered a whole soy sauce chicken to go and when i got home it was cold and very pink. I ended up having to put it in the stove for a few to fully cook it. I dont eat much soy sauce chicken, but I dont think it should be pink. Additionally i ordered chicken fried rice which surprisingly was not better than what I would get from a local chinese food place that isnt as expensive or traditional. It seemed like good fried rice was diluted with white rice.
