This place is super cute and the food is amazing. The decor is very GenX which is perfect in my opinion ;). Had the brisket which was so tender the knife isn't necessary. Baked Beans tons of flavor, Mac and cheese creamy goodness to say the least, potato salad was a touch on the salty side for my liking, but the coleslaw eeeh a bit too vinegary in my opinion. Was like raw sauerkraut. Service was superb!! Highly recommend this little place!

Decided to go for a drive on a beautiful November Saturday to try another new to me barbecue spot. Arrived at Shorty's Smokehouse not long after open at noon. Mild pit smoke in the air right as you walk in the door. Mmmmhhh. I ordered the sampler which comes with 4 meats and 3 sides. I chose brisket, pulled pork, ribs and pork belly burnt ends, the daily special. I chose the coleslaw and put beans as my sides. Service was abundantly friendly and quick. Top notch really. Food was all on point except for the pit beans. To me... they were too sweet. But otherwise good flavor. Others would probably love that sweet hit. Brisket had a nice smoke ring and good smoke flavor but the beef flavor was still very present. It was tender and moist. Great with the mustard sauce. Pulled pork was perfectly seasoned, tender, moist, had nice bark, good smoke flavor as well. Good without sauce and also good with the OG sauce. Ribs were as good as my favorite spot here in St. Louis, Bogart's Smokehouse. Perfectly smoked and seasoned. The pork belly burnt ends were just awesome. Sticky, smokey, perfectly seasoned chunks of pork belly with a good mix of lean and fat. It's a haul over to Waterloo for me, but I'll definitely slide back down there. Good service, great food.

First time here and was glad we stopped in. Large portions and very tender brisket and turkey. Baked beans were yummy. Wished for more options on BBQ sauces. Wife like the mac and cheese. Reasonable pricing for quality and qty of food

I love this place. It's a hometown smokehouse with fresh food and a great atmosphere. One of my favorite things about Shorty's is the specials. They'll often do a brisket gyro or pulled pork tacos. Their normal menu is awesome too. Personally, I love their brisket. It's tender and juicy. They slice it when you order it. The pork rinds are excellent too. Pricing is good for a smokehouse. I had a massive brisket sandwich, pork rinds and a soda - all for $16. That's not bad at all for barbecue.

ANOTHER great place to eat in Waterloo! This small town gets 5 stars from ME!!! A group of us stopped in here on a Friday night before a play (down the street at Monroe Actors Stage Company) and stuffed our faces. I had a brisket sandwich with sides of slaw and beans. The food was all FANTASTIC! My 2 gripes would be that they offer VERY little in the alcoholic beverage arena, and that they didn't have half of what was on the menu. The prices weren't unreasonable, and the service was pretty quick. I'd come back, but hope they get better at offering more...

App: Loaded burnt end chips - I'm a sucker for a house made chip and these were great, I think they may have had the BBQ rub on them? Their seasoning on the chips was special Bf had smoked pork steak - EXCELLENT, was juicy and well seasoned Sides: potato salad and onion rings - great I had BBQ sampler (brisket, pulled pork, bratwurst and 1/4 rack ribs) - juicy, fall apart brisket, pulled pork was not dry like 90% of places, ribs were some of the best I've had and so was the bratwurst Sides: mac and cheese and hush puppies - the mac and cheese is not baked mac and cheese (I definitely prefer baked) but this was FANTASTIC. Hush puppies were great. I also had a Bloody Mary with their pickle vodka - it was perfect, not too spicy and they had a fresh (possibly homemade) pickle

The food came out quickly and was hot or chilled (slaw) correctly. The French fries were crispy (given to me to try BBQ sauce). The chicken sandwich was full of well smoked and seasoned chicken. The coleslaw was vinegar based and I just added some black pepper. The mustard sauce was excellent. The tea was good. The newer decor set the place off from the smokehouse menu. It seemed more of a bar than a smokehouse. I was an immediate fan.

It was raining the day we came so did not get to experience the rooftop. It was not busy on the day we came but we were seated fairly close to a lingering group of 6 who were incredibly loud, which was disappointing. We were there on a Sunday which is a limited menu because of the featured all-you-can-eat Sunday fried chicken dinner served family style. It's a great deal at $19/adult! Included are biscuits, dirty mashed potatoes, sautéed green beans, corn custard, and then the chicken. Biscuits were VERY hard...like could hurt someone if you threw it at them hard. Green beans and dirty mash were exceptional along with the accompanying gravy. I also really enjoyed the chicken--flavorful, juicy, nice crust, piping hot. The corn custard, while the texture and corn flavor were nice, lacked seasoning. They mean it when they say all you can eat, and we were even given boxes to take home the few extras our stomachs didn't have room for. The service was unfortunately not great, took a while to see our waiter and we were never offered water refills. Overall, a nice restaurant with good food, would love to try their full menu. I deducted a star for noise, service, and a couple food items being a bit subpar. It was a half hour drive for us so if we ever happen to be in Waterloo would like to go back but probably wouldn't make a special trip for it due to the drive and us not being absolutely blown away.

There were plenty of street parking available and within walking distance from the restaurant. When we arrived, we were greeted immediately and brought to an elevator. We were seated on the second floor overlooking the streets. The place is beautifully decorated from what looked like repurposed doors. I'm not sure if the door looks were intentional or they truly were repurposed. Either way, they gave the restaurant characters. Our waitress stopped by shortly after we were seated and took our drink orders. After she brought us our drinks, we placed an order for some smoked prawn roll (jalapeño cream cheese mousse, red pepper jelly, fried wanton and cucumber). Delicious! Next came our entrée. I ordered the 16 oz cowboy ribeye, medium rare. The steaks are a la carte. I ordered a side of brown butter asparagus to go with my steak. They offer accouterment for the steaks but I decided against it. My steak was prepared properly and was quite tasty. My husband had the grilled salmon which he also thoroughly enjoyed. For dessert, I ordered the chocolate grand Marnier creme caramel. It was divine! Overall, our dining experience was wonderful. Making the 20-minute trek was well worth it.

This was great for a relaxed lunch with the kids and brother visiting from out of town. Plenty of seating! There are kid-friendly options here, with the pizza and pub snack menu. My picky daughter (not a fan of pizza) enjoys the pretzels. There is something for everyone. The salads have fresh ingredients, made-to-order. Pizzas on the menu are excellent and can also be modified or build-your-own. Pizzas and other hot appetizers come out on paper-lined pans.
