Never a bad place to come to! Usually come here to do laps with my partner and it has a great trail to do that with ups and downs, twists and turns. Lately whenever I'm in an area away from home I visit a new park. This particular day I was near Shorty Howell. Because I wasn't familiar with the park, I only walked a third of the park. I saw a few people walking their dogs and several families walking with their kids. There is a small area with a playground and there were quite a few children playing there that evening. I've been going to a lot, and I mean A LOT, of parks from 2020-2021 with my clients, since it's one of the few approved places we can go amidst ever-changing COVID-19 restrictions and precautions. I've seriously never been to so many parks as I have in this past year and a half. Good thing I enjoy the outdoors and fresh air! If you like to be outside in fresh air and are in close proximity to Duluth, definitely come check this park out. I never realized how truly huge it is every time I passed by on Pleasant Hill - apparently 67 acres, according to Daniel B. Wow! There's a pond with ducks and geese, lots of shaded and sunny spots to walk and run, sit, picnic, or play in, rentable pavilions, accessible bathrooms, etc. My clients and I even got to watch some drummers recently practicing under a pavilion. Not sure what group they were from, but they reminded me of Taiko drummers I've seen back home in Hawaii - pretty cool stuff. Gwinnett county really is blessed with some of the best parks I've seen. Shorty Howell is the other great park in the area. The other is McDaniel Farms Park. There is one difference though (actually a couple of differences): they have a lake with water fowl! Yes, you can come and look at geese, duck, and turtles in their natural glory. Who doesn't love watching wildlife? They have a barrier like a zoo, so you don't interact with them. I have seen people throw a whole 2-3 loafs of bread to them. You shouldn't feed wild birds, especially bread. They can grow mold and harm the ecosystem. It also don't provide much nutrition to the birds. There is a sign that says don't feed the birds, but it's not on the lake! They should move the sign so people can see it clearly. Because it's sad to see disgusting, moldy bread littered all around the lake. Anyways, besides the lake, they have a pavilion, a playground, bathrooms, and a baseball field. If you have kids, this is probably a frequent destination. Their trail is about 1.3 miles. It's nice. They do have Joro spider infestation, like the rest of Gwinnett County. So watch out for running face first into webs if you go to a more scenic path of the trail. It's a great looking park. Bring your families and hang out. read more

This is a huge park with a little something for everyone. We have been here a few times and there are multiple fields, playgrounds, trails, parking lots, and areas to hang out. We have played at the main playground on the left when you enter. There are all kinds of exciting features and I only wish this playground had more swings, as it is often crowded. As you wind back, there are baseball and softball fields. There is also an open lawn area and we saw people doing tai chi at this park. Plenty of space to spread out if you want. Parking is always easy as they have lots of spaces. The smaller playgrounds are near the fields, which is perfect for parents with kids playing on the fields who have siblings, because they can go to the playground that is right there. These toys are for younger kids. read more

I just wasn't going to pass by Shorty Howell one more time without checking it out. I mean, it's got a cool bridge right over the entrance to the park, which probably spells some kind of trouble for people with sunroofs, but such is life (kidding)! Shorty Howell park is an interesting park just by its design, because It's in a super busy area off of pleasant hill, right across the street from a Walmart, and also in walking distance to several small snack time stores right next door. So it's very possible to take a nature walk and hear cars honking or see a headlights sitting and waiting. Don't worry about them though, just enjoy your walk! There are lots of paved trails here, as well as a natural trail that pretty much mirrors the paved trail as it zig-zags through the woods, although you'll eventually have to get back on the paved trail if you want to walk the entirety of the park. The trails (paved) are really wide, so a cycle, baby stroller pushing parent and a few folks walking along the trail can easily pass one another all at the same time (no, seriously). Shorty Howell is also a decently sized park, with lots to see along the way, like the football field surrounded by the track, a smaller and larger kids play area (the smaller area have lights that turn on at night just in case you'd like to come in the evening), and a really nice pond teeming with wildlife including geese and turtles towards the entrance to the park...and let's not forget the bridge at the entrance! I visited on a Friday evening just after 8pm, and while most of the facilities were closed, the park was still alive as lots of people were out enjoying themselves. If you're one of those horn honkers about to snap with road rage while you're stuck in traffic, do yourself a favor and turn on in to Shorty Howell and feed a duck. I really loved this place!!! I had passed this park many a time due to it being on the way to or from somewhere that I was going to. However, I had never stopped by. Well this Valentine's day, I planned for me and the beau to have a little picnic in the park together for lunch. So we packed up some sandwiches, drinks, etc, and headed off. Well from the street, you think it's definitely a decent sized park, but you have NOOOOOOO idea until you really drive into the entrance....... They have something for everyone....whether you want to take a romantic stroll, or bring the kids out to play, watch the softball or baseball team play, feed the ducks, take the dog for a walk, get some exercise, or just have a nice little picnic. I really enjoyed myself. We found these little tables in between the baseball fields and sat down and were able to enjoy the beautiful weather and each other's company. After eating, we took a walk around the playgrounds and pond, and really just had a nice time out there. The trails are paved, their are designated areas to eat (they have a covered picnic area as well), and I would say the only downfall was they didn't seem to have any big grassy field, which would have been nice, b/c I would have like to throw down a blanket and have had our picnic that way......but still enjoyed it the way we did. read more

I never knew Shorty Howell Park existed until I went to a Gangnam Style flashmob rehearsal at the park on Sunday. And yes, I might as well plug the actual flashmob, which will happen this Saturday. You wouldn't think there'd be a park along such an insanely busy stretch of commercial and retail establishments, but there is. What makes this park most impressive is its sheer size. As soon as you drive up into the park, you realize how big it is: 67 acres with baseball, football, and multi-purpose grass fields. The grass seemed to be in decent shape, especially for a public park. Along with the fields, there are playgrounds for the kiddies, shelters to stay under the shade and keep cool, picnic tables, grills, and walking trails. There's even a lake with ducks and geese. I think the park technically closes at dusk, but the lights around the football field and surrounding track stay on until about 11pm. Note: In order to use the football field, you need a permit. There are multiple parking lots so there's ample space to park. Overall, I'd say Shorty Howell is a pretty solid suburban park. It was quite popular with families with the kiddies on Sunday and it felt clean and safe. Can't ask for too much more than that. Getting away from the hectic hustle and bustle of Pleasant Hill is only a stone's throw away, so if you live up this way, certainly check this park out (if you haven't already). read more

This park is less than a half mile from home and I DRIVE there to RUN/JOG/WALK. Yeah, so what? Anyway, I really like that I have a park with such a nice trail to run on. I once came here with bf on our bikes and we realized that the path was insufficient for a casual bike ride, as there are too many people doing the above-mentioned activities in caps (except the driving one) and it is not of a decent length. I think that may have been my first time at Shorty Howell and I immediately thought that while I couldn't break my bike in there, I could travel the trail on foot. Last year, during good weather, I would go and enjoy the pond with the ducks, geese, turtles, and other suburban wildlife (is that an oxymoron?) and I am antsy for the temperatures to climb up a bit more. Now if only we could set a ceiling for metro Atlanta's highs to about 80-something degrees, I'd be running out here all the time. But alas, summer is coming. Catch me here doing a few laps sometime. Just don't be creepy and come up from behind with no warning. I may punch you in the face. You've been warned. By the way, check out Daniel B.'s review. He goes into great detail about this park's amenities (well, he does that for every place he reviews). You'll notice that there is space for tennis matches and baseball games. Shorty Howell is probably my favorite park near my house. This park is more populated than my other closest park (Best Friend) so for walking on the trail, I felt more comfortable here. Besides the walking trail there's also a track around the multipurpose field (i've seen soccer on it, but it looks like its used for football too). This is very much a family friendly park and has a very large playground area, and a smaller playground area as well. If you'd just like to sit and enjoy the sites, there's a lake with geese...I've actually even seen a few turtle in it as well. read more

I absolutely love this park. It's right around the corner from where I live, and the track itself is amazing. You get the scenic trail with plenty of shade and a lake in the middle with benches surrounding it. There are plenty of places to park! The only negative I'd say is that people need to learn how to pick up after their pet. Near the lake area there was a LOT of pet droppings which was gross. Love the entrance to this park with the big water fountain in the pond on the left and the bridge walk-way overtop as you drive under it. Always packed at this park. Leagues going on for baseball and other sports. Children playground is the biggest I've seen at any Gwinnett Parks thus far. Probably explains the crowd. The trail here is pretty nice, but it's a bit noisy so that's a bother for me. But one thing that is out of control are the geese chilling at the pond. Talk about poo everywhere! It has been a long time since I last stopped in this park to walk. So glad I stopped! My walk was so much fun. 1 lap was about 1.25 miles... I think. There are no mile markers in the direction I walked. I walk for distance... but I let my Apple Watch track my distance. It was a hot day... about 4:00 PM. I walked in 90% shade. I enjoyed my walk! To get some sun I walked around the track surrounding the lacrosse field being built. The walkways are narrow... difficult to socially distance yourself. read more

Awesome, huge park! There are lots of walking trails and lots of playgrounds. The lake in the center is always pretty with lots of ducks to feed (if you're into that...) and even more awesome is its walking distance to Boba Mocha for a quick boba-tea break before achieving some more miles. They have a ton of baseball fields and even a playground in the middle of the baseball fields. So basically, you have so many options of what to see, or where to walk, when you get there. This park is interesting, because there is busy pleasant hill right outside of it and it is almost like you're hiding from the city-suburb-life in a nature escape. You almost forget you're so close to all the busy cars and modern cafes. read more

I love Shorty Howell Park. It's located in Duluth, on Pleasant Hill in the middle of a fairly busy area. Though, surrounded by strip malls, it's a pleasant escape from the hustle and bustle of Metro Atlanta living. Here, you'll find a relaxing pond full of ducks and geese. There's a playground for children and several baseball fields for organized sports. They have paved trails that are excellent for rollerblading and bicycling or a quick walk or jog. If you're more in the mood to relax, they have a large green area where you can have a quiet picnic or read a book. For OTP, this park is excellent. A welcome get away from a busy day! read more

SHORTY HOWELL PARK, DULUTH This park is located on Pleasant Hill Rd across the street from Walmart and I have seen it often. I always thought that it would be nice to take a walk around the little duck pond and today, that was my intention. First of all, the park is open from sunrise until 11:00pm unless posted otherwise. When I first looked at this park, I had no idea that it is 67 acres. It goes way back and is much larger than it looks. It has a very nice activity building with classrooms and can be seen from the road. It looks more like a club house and has a great view of the pond. There are seven baseball/softball fields, a football/multi-purpose field with lighted walking track, and a large pavilion with a playground that looks brand spanking new. There is a separate playground that is huge and has equipment that seems to accommodate various ages. It even has a small climbing wall. A paved 1.25-mille trail runs along the pond, but you definitely want to be on this trail before and after sunset as it is not a shaded area and can be very hot. As you go further into the park, you will find the natural trail that is very shady and somewhat isolated. You may want to consider taking a friend with you as you use this particular trail. While this is a great park for families or just hanging out and taking a leisurely walk, I wouldn't use it as a park for serious exercise because the trails are very short. I tend to walk 4 miles minimum and require the ability to go a greater distance. I would also want greater distance if I am going to bike. read more

Decent playground! There is shade over part of the play ground during the mornings so it is nice for the summer for sure. My son had tons of fun climbing around the playground and going on the slides. There are lots of parking spots and fields. There is a loop for people who want to exercise/run/walk. It is not only a playground so there are people there that don't have kids themselves, who may get impatient when you have a toddler who wants to walk to the car on his/her own and rudely honk at you to move. I like this park and all, but what kinda park doesn't have doggy bags? Maybe I take these things for granted in my dog-friendly world, but I've never been to a park that didn't have them so I spent more time trying to pull my dog out of shit position (poor pup!) so that I wouldn't look like an asshole than I did running with my pup. I've been coming to Shorty Howell park since high school (1993), back when it was unpaved and not much going on. Since then, they've added two decent playground areas, a paved walking trail (unpaved trail still there), multiple rec fields, football field, a track and clubhouse. The park also offers nice scenery and a lake. My problem is the cleanliness of the park and the bathrooms. STAY AWAY FROM THE BATHROOMS. There are much better parks out there. Located just a few miles from my house, Shorty Howell Park is the perfect venue for jogging. It's across the street from our neighborhood Walmart. I'm thankful that it's so close to my house because I don't like jogging in the neighborhood, and I feel that this park is a fairly safe environment since there are always families and other runners/walkers around. At a massive 67 acres, this park is a lot bigger than I had expected it to be the first time I checked it out. My parents had told me this park about a month ago, and I've been jogging there a few times a week since then. The 1.25-mile paved trail is wonderful for those (like myself) who don't like jogging on dirt, sand, and gravel. There's a small lake at this park in which geese and ducks swim and stroll around, which is kind of neat. WARNING: If you are less than crazy about things of nature, you may be annoyed and/or grossed out by the goose/duck droppings along the side of the lake. At first, I was completely turned off by the droppings everywhere, but then I realized that you can avoid most of the droppings by walking/jogging on the side closest to the road. You will still see droppings here and there, but not ALL OVER the pavement like the other side of the lake. Apparently some people think the droppings are dog poop, but they're not. People actually pick up after their dogs here (YAY!). Unfortunately, no one picks up after the geese and ducks. You have been forewarned... Nasty droppings aside, this park is wonderful. Again, I am a huge fan of the paved trail, but that isn't the only thing this park offers. There are also baseball/softball and football fields as well as a pavilion, picnic tables, and BBQ grills perfect for parties. Additionally, there are not one but two playgrounds for the kids. Best of all, entry into the park is free. Woohoo! =D Overall, Shorty Howell Park gets 4.5 stars because it's the perfect place for people of all ages to enjoy at no cost. There is plenty of parking so you will never have trouble finding a place to park. Plus, the restrooms are in acceptable shape (not super clean but not filthy) and always have toilet paper (WIN!), and the women's restroom has soap! I totally forgot fitness centers close early on 4th of july. But that doesn't mean I can't walk/run outside! I've been working hard at encouraging my mom to exercise so I yelped some parks nearby. I recently checked out McDaniel Farm Park and I found that I enjoyed Shorty Howell Park so much more! Shorty Howell Park is located on the east side of Pleasant Hill Rd about 1000 feet north of the intersection with Hill Drive. It is also across the street from Walmart and next to H-Mart for those of you looking for a reference point. It's a little hidden because I would have never known it was there without looking up parks in the area. However, I haven't lived in Duluth for very long! The park is open from sunrise to 11:00pm (unless posted otherwise). The park spans across 67 acres with an activity building, lighted baseball/softball fields, restrooms, football field with a lighted walking track, 1.25-mile paved trail, pavilion with grills, and playgrounds. There is also a soft-trail which lies just outside the paved trail for those that want to take a stroll through the natural areas. During my visit I saw families enjoying the weather with their children at the playground, observing the ducks in the pond, and grilling food at the pavilion. The playground is pretty nice unlike some dinky playgrounds you may see in other areas. There were also others like me who went there to run and walk along their trail. I really liked that they have a track surrounding the football field! I look forward to my next visit to Shorty Howell Park. I want to try to come out here around sunrise to get a nice morning run in. Note: There are also geese near the pond. So get ready to use your hop scotch skills so you don't step on their poo. read more

I like this park. The paved track is a little over a mile and hilly. You can really get a workout in. The park always has people in it either exercising, kids playing baseball or football, kids in the play area, and adults with blankets relaxing. A little bit of everyone comes to this park. They also have a gazebo area with grills. Many come there to cook their dinner or have parties. They need to improve on their bathrooms. They are ALWAYS very dirty. I try to make sure I only go in there in times of extreme emergency :-) Overall - I really enjoy coming to this park. read more

This park has been a childhood visiting place of mine! It is decently sized but there are a TON of foot traffic! It always sounds like screaming children! It's not bad if you want to take your children here because there will be no shortage of young children for them to hang out with! There is a cute lake but it's covered in ducks so you have to watch where you are going! This place is great for a BBQ day! Just because the space is so open! It's a great place to visit occasionally but if you look around you can find more secluded areas not next to fast moving traffic! It is easy to find and most if not all the locals probably know where it is! read more

This park is bigger than I thought it was. The trails are short enough that you don't have to worry about getting lost (I did five laps on the 1.25 mile paved trail before leaving), there is adquate shade and the park itself is very open. And it's CLEAN (scale of 1-10, 10 being Mr. Clean clean, I'd give it an 8.5)! I was very pleased to not have to be on poop patrol while I walked. The dog owners clean up after their pets, the geese didn't make as much of a mess as I expected, and litter is *almost* nonexistent. Bottom line? Shorty Howell is ideal for families and for quiet morning or late afternoon walks. I took away a star because the park trails are so close to the shopping centers and in some cases right in people's back yards. I'm a trail-walker and I like to feel like I'm getting lost in nature when I'm outside. That's kind of difficult to do when you can still see the cars or you're walking parallel to people's fences. read more

I've been going to Shorty Howell Park for many years. Just never had a chance to review it. I mainly go here to feed the ducks/geese at the lake with my left over bread. No kidding. They are always hungry and will come up to you. There's also turtles there and I try to feed them but the ducks/geese always beat them to it. Even the fishes are hungry and want a piece of bread too. There is a lots of poop around the area but it's okay. There really is plenty of other areas to walk and get your fitness on. There is a main playground near the lake. If you walk farther, you will see another small playground, close to a pavilion. If you walk even farther, you will see lots of baseball fields. It's a nice park overall on the busy street of Pleasant Hill Rd across the street from Wal-Mart and next to Super H Mart. read more
