Covid times review: ordered in person for take out. I love Hawaiian food; this pandemic has me missing the islands so thought I'd try Shootz as I have been hearing rave reviews about this place. Located in Rodeo 39, a hall made up of restaurants and retail, there's ample parking and space for outdoor dining. Safety protocols are in place, such as mask requirement and social distancing markers. I ordered the loco moco and the short rib plate. I must be missing something here, but the loco moco is wasn't to my liking. Perhaps I'm just looking for the comforting feeling from eating plain brown gravy? Perhaps, I came in expecting something resembling the many a loco moco I've eaten before? The loco moco gravy had an orange tinge, full of spices, and lacked the beef flavor. It had a peppery flavor, but looking through my expectations, was not something I'd get again. The short rib plate was good; the beef was tender and flavorful but not much meat. My portion had a lot of the rib bones and cartilage with not much meat attached. Both entrees came with a scoop of rice and Mac salad. Mac salad was delicious with tuna (?) mixed in. The service was super friendly and the wait for my food wasn't very long. I'd come here again to try the rest of the menu. Come here keeping in mind it's Hawaiian inspired food. read more

SHOOTZ! Found this place years ago but just getting around to reviewing now. All the food here is incredible. The Katsu chicken plate never misses. It's so so good and it doesn't need sauce like other places do. Glad to see they expanded to a larger storefront because the popularity of this place is justified. Also the service is great even though most times they get crazy busy. Always best to order online ahead of time (especially on the weekends) because like I said, they get crazy busy during lunch and dinner rush. All in all, Shootz I would DEFINITELY recommend to anyone looking for exceptional Hawaiian food. read more

It was amazing! It gets a little overbearing after a while but it's really delicious! Definitely worth trying! read more

Warning! This place is not like it used to be. For the past few times I have gone the food has been extremely greasy. I have ordered the chicken sandwich and fried rice. They were both just greasy and you could see grease and oil pools all through the food. I paid $30 and couldn't even finish or take more than a few bites. It just was not appealing at all. My first time trying Hawaiian food in OC and i was thoroughly impressed! I was craving some macaroni salad, and just as well because it came with the Kimchi butter katsu combo. The chicken was cooked to tender perfection, and soo crunchy! My one star taken away is because the macaroni salad was a little bit too fishy for me, but I still ate it all because it was nice and creamy despite that! I've been to Shootz several times and have tried about everything on the menu. Having tried everything, I think the only things I really like are the kimchi butter katsu chicken, the musubis and the mac salad. The kimchi butter katsu chicken is really tasty, flavorful, and unique. The chicken itself can be inconsistent; sometimes it is juicier, and sometimes it is on the drier side, but overall I don't mind it too much since the flavor makes up for it. Both musubis are great but I prefer the spam brulee one. For the things I didn't care for, the short ribs were WAY too salty. Loco moco was average and the patty was kind of dry. The jalapeno garlic shrimp was pretty good, but I didn't realize that they batter and fry the shrimp with the shell still on. I understand that is a way of cooking the shrimp, but I just wished they would've warned me that the shells would be on. I was expecting it to be peeled. But maybe that was my bad for assuming and not clarifying. This isn't the restaurant's fault, but something to take note of is that parking is a pain at Rodeo 39. Even on weekday evenings and pretty much anytime on the weekends, I always struggle to find parking in the lot and usually have to go around in circles waiting for someone to leave. Overall, I really enjoy the kimchi butter chicken katsu and the musubis and would definitely come back for those items. However, because of the parking situation, I don't really go out of my way to come here unless I'm already in the area. I definitely recommend anyone to try this place at least once though! read more

To start off, I'm so so so happy that one of my good friends recommended me to try this place out! I'm usually a pretty hard person to impress when it comes to food, but wow, their food had left me speechless! I ordered the Kimchi Butter Katsu Chicken Sandwich, and it was one of the best tasting chicken sandwiches that I've ever tried! It was so flavorful, and I felt like all of the ingredients had complemented each other so well. It had a nice sweet and savory taste. The chicken itself was nice and crispy, had a sweet sauce on it, and the macaroni salad added on top of the chicken made it taste even better. Truth be told, I was sad when I only had one bite left haha. This is a place that I'm definitely going to come back to again! In case you all wanted a little more detail: Shootz is located in a very cute and aesthetic looking food plaza called Rodeo 39. It actually used to be the DMV before it turned into this popular food spot! This plaza has all these food places like In N Out and Raising Canes and these other little vendors! The one thing that I love about Rodeo 39 is that you can go to each little vendor to try out their unique foods. Alright let me start this off by saying I LOVE Shootz. This was my fourth timing coming back and I decided I would get something other than the chicken katsu sandwich. I went with the Short Ribs plate with the Spam Brûlée Musubi. I'm not really a steak kinda person but boy oh boy did I like this. The marinade they use is so tasty. They served a few pieces of the meat so it's easy to cut and you're not doing a lot of work while eating. I have just got into Musubi and theirs was amazing. The brûlée on top is what really sells it. I ended up eating the musubi from the bottom up just to save the brûlée for the end. The steamed rice that was served with the ribs was pretty standard for sticky rice, sprinkled with furikake which I enjoyed. The only thing that fell short for me was the mac salad that was on the side. I love a good mac salad but this just didn't do it for me. The flavor was kind of flat, which is interesting because I enjoyed it more in the chicken katsu sandwich. It wasn't terrible, but also wasn't good. I love Shootz and I can't shut up about how good it is. This last trip was taken partially because I kept telling my friends they had to try it. If you're thinking about coming here, do it! Also, shout out to the friendly cashier (who's name I didn't catch unfortunately) who was complimenting my friends and I when we were ordering. read more

Oh, Shootz! This place is dang good! Food: - Kimchi Butter Chicken Katsu: Probably the best thing we had, in my opinion. The flavors worked out nicely, and that says a lot, considering that I normally don't like butter on things! Best when eaten fresh! We took it home and it lost a lot of flavor and crispiness but that's a given. - Hot Kimchi Butter Chicken Sandwich: Not as good as the rice version of the dish but still good, nonetheless! Wish the sandwich had a little more sauce to it. Also maybe extra coleslaw to cut through that savoriness! - Loco Moco: My girlfriend's personal favorite, reminds both of us of a twist on loco moco with Ritter's pot roast instead of gravy. Would much prefer having the option of both regular loco moco with gravy and this version as a separate menu option. Still very very good, in my opinion! Special shout outs to the macaroni salad and the little musubi rolls that we got. That honey walnut shrimp one was to-die for and I literally wanted to take a whole box home! Service: Sheesh. I have not met a nicer group of workers. They're all really down to Earth and the friendliest you could ever imagine. It comes with four spam musubis, a good portion of chicken katsu, white rice, macaroni salad, and four musubis with tempura instead of spam. The spam musubi was delicious with its sauce and ratio of spam to rice, since spam is sooo salty. I loved the chicken katsu and rice is rice. The macaroni salad they made was sooooo much better than the one at Albertsons (that one is disgusting). What I am most disappointed about is the tempura musubi. You would expect the food here to have a lot of flavor because it looks like it would but it's seriously SO bland. The kimchi butter chicken had zero kimchi flavors, it tasted like plain lightly bread chicken. I was hoping better for the mac salad but it was disappointing, like Mac and mayo. It looked so good and all the times I've been to Rodeo 39, there has been such a long line so I had high expectations.. but it was pretty disappointing.. the katsu was pretty flavorless, even though it looked so good! I'm someone who likes plain food too! The mac salad was more on the plain side but it's ok. It's a tuna mac salad, so not your usual Hawaiian bbq mac salad. Would not get again or recommend. My boss and I went here for lunch earlier today. We've both been here before, and we do enjoy the food here. The fact that the food is good is the only reason why this review isn't a 1 star review. The cashier already dropped the ball when she forgot to add on our order to make one of the kimchi butter katsu plate spicy, since my boss likes a good kick in his meals. When we asked her which one was spicy, she began fumbling around asking almost every one of her coworkers until she just apologized and admitted she messed up our order. Fine. I get it, we're only human. Honestly wasn't bothered then, since I know how demanding the food industry can be. However, this is what really ticked me off. After owning up to her errors, she offers us sriracha instead which my boss denies. He asked for a side of their kimchi butter sauce instead. Then she says that "oh well, there's a 50 cent charge" My boss agrees to pay and as he hands her the 50 cents, she had the nerve to say "oh it's actually 53 cents with tax" Are you kidding me? It's 3 cents! We had no problem paying 53 cents for a side but what kind of customer service is that??? You messed up the order and you still have the nerve to nickel and dime for 3 cents??? The worst part of this experience, her boss or maybe even the owner of Shootz, was working on his laptop legit 3 feet away from this exchange. He didn't even bother to look up for a second. So, All in all, pretty good food but astoundingly awful service. If you can put up with terrible customer service, then you'll enjoy this place. read more

This place is located inside rodeo 39. It is a great help for all the foodies out there. This is basically the most popular restaurant in rodeo 39. During the night time this rodeo 39 gets crowded. But, I came here during mid day and it wasn't as bad. There are deee weren't outside in the front. The food itself was absolutely delicious. I would rate this place 5/5 Based on food. My only concern is, is the way time. There are two ways for you to order. You can wait in line, or you can order the food online. I ordered my food online, I had of time. And that is the people in line got their food before I did. i bright this up to the staff, and they were having technology issues. This is one of those spots that always has a line, and for good reason! The food is amazing. My husband always orders the shortribs. I usually get the chicken katsu.. though I do wish it had a stronger kimchi flavor. The brulee musubi is fantastic, I highly recommend that. I'm also normally not a fan of things like macaroni salad, but this stuff is great. The staff is always super nice and upbeat, which always rubs off and puts me in a good mood! All I really tasted was butter, and you can see it ooze out as you press down with a fork so if you're watching your health in any way, just a heads up. One of our favorite spots to go to especially at Rodeo 39. Recommended: Kimchi Butter Katsu Chicken Combo. My first time trying this one last week. Wow the flavors together are amazing. Katsu with kimichi butter very tasty. Short Rib Plate (my personal favorite). Love love love. Meat is just cooked to perfection every time. That marinade is yum. Rice & mac salad are the sides. Never disappoints. Loco Moco. Ordered this earlier this year. Was really good taste. Not salty. Honey Coconut Shrimp Musubi (my personal favorite). Love shrimp and this hot the spot.
