Teppanyaki is something I only go to once every few years, for special occasions. For me, it's always been more about the experience than about the food. The food isn't terrible, but I don't particularly go to teppanyaki for the food. I decided, for my friend's birthday, we would go to teppanyaki. Shogun Pasadena was the closest location for us in SGV. We brought a small group and shared several teppanyaki entrees. I personally got the filet mignon with sesame chicken, and shared it with my wife. It was a perfect amount of portion to share. I do not think I would have been able to finish everything by myself. I really loved our teppanyaki chef, he was very friendly and gave us a solid performance. The food was fairly standard as far as teppanyaki went, nothing standout, but overall tasty. I highly recommend this restaurant, it never disappoints. Every course of food that comes to the table taste amazing. I have come multiple times with my friends. It has a great ambience with wonderful staff. You can request a specific chef if you find one you especially like. Osvaldo has been a fantastic chef. He is so entertaining and social. The food was so good as always. It is similar, but in my opinion better than Benihana. They usually play music for the table, but this time they did not. It seems like some of the tables have no music box or are programmed with sound effects instead of music. The wait staff is also very respectful and attentive. My water was always refilled. Alyssa was so on it with making sure we were taken care of. They have always been receptive and nice. Overall I would definitely come back again! read more

Shogun. The first thing that comes to mind is a high-ranked Japanese commander. So, how does my fine dining experience reflect on this respected figure? My experiences started as soon as I walked through those bamboo doors. I was greeted happily by the front desk, who asked me to sit down to wait. Even though we weren't seated until 15 minutes after, I would soon realize that it was all worth it. We were seated with a cheerful couple. It was a unique to have been seated with random people. Though this is not my preferred, it worked out well. The waiter came and did the usual introduction - ask for drinks, hand out menus, and gave useful recommendations. The best part came when the food was made. The chef, Daniel, made funny comments during and presentation. I thought his onion train was tasteful. The food was as was expected...YUMMY!! The rice? Life changing. The chicken? mmmmhmm. The beef? Chefs kiss. The food filled my tummy and gave me leftovers. Overall, the experience and ambiance was quiet pleasant. For the holidays, they do not disclose until parties are seated at the table that the menu is dinner prices ALL DAY. Found this out the hard way on Christmas Eve & New Years day (back to back) when I was trying to get a decent lunch for a good price. Nothing was posted outside the establishment or on their instagram. The staff told us that the dinner prices all day are "for the holidays"... One of My go to teppanyaki places! They recently set up outdoor teppanyaki for covid which is cool. They offer all the normal stuff of the benehanas, wakos, etc. but much more sushi as well. Parking was easy, convenient, and free. This was the only positive of the evening. Party of 5 for birthday dinner. Hosts. Very unpleasant. Two hosts asked 3 times whether we had a reservation and spent minutes discussing where to seat us. Empty restaurant (3 out of 15 tables occupied) and our party gets seated right next to bathroom. Server. Inexperienced. Meant well, but needs more training. Chef. Nice, but very very low energy. We know we are paying a premium for the show and the show did not deliver. Food. Far below average. Quantity decreased materially. Everything was under seasoned and over cooked. Entrees were not served at the same time. After all meats and seafood were cooked and plated then the chef started grilling the veggies. Forgot to celebrate the birthday. Didn't forget for the other two tables out of 3 that were celebrating. We reminded the server and it took 10 minutes after paying the bill for them to sing a ten second happy birthday song. Sorry shogun to have inconvenienced you with a party of 5 for a birthday dinner with an advanced reservation. It is clear you have other more important things to attend to. Please be more welcoming. Shogun is an old and established Japanese restaurant in Pasadena. I have been coming here since the 1980s! They have a teppanyaki grill area, a sushi bar, a regular full dinner area and a full bar. The food is always good. The fish is fresh and the Tempura is light and crunchy. The teppanyaki show is fun and the flavors are better than Benihana! Today we had the Lobster Tempura Roll, and a couple of combo dinners ( Tempura and Sashimi & Tempura and Salmon Teriyaki). It's great to have an old favorite still around today. I have tried to be fairly understanding during COVID, but tonight's takeout from Shogun was unacceptable. Have eaten here in the past for both lunch and dinner, and have never been dissatisfied. My wife got the sesame chicken entree (pictured). The size was pathetic for a $26 (with fried rice) entree + tax + tip. It was also dry and overcooked. I got the ribeye + chicken combo. "Ribeye" was ... destroyed. Beyond well done. Pretty much grey. Chicken was dry and flavorless. Really poor meal for $80. Will not do takeout from Shogun again. Steak, chicken, shrimp etc... all placed on the hot grill in front of the guests, add some flames and some spatula tricks and everyone is happy. Just had an enjoyable meal at Shogun. It's been ages since I've dined here, so when friends invited me to lunch, I was delighted. When we arrived, we were promptly seated. The restaurant still looks the same, sushi area on the right and teppanyaki on the left. The cooking area itself is a little dated in decor, definitely needs freshen up. Got started on a few appetizers - crunchy dragon roll, shishito peppers and sashimi plate which were all delicious. For teppan, I had the ribeye with scallops ($21) and the others had the New York steak and sesame chicken ($17). The flavor of the food was great and the steak was surprisingly decent. Same goes for the scallops, which was fresh and both paired extremely well with their sauce offerings. The rice was really good and the veggies were grilled to perfection. Love the ginger dressing on side salad. Service was quick and efficient. It was fun and entertaining to watch the chefs in action. Twirling and banging knives and spatulas. Ours was extremely skilled and funny. Though I think loud techno music during show is unnecessary and annoying. Kind of hard to talk and hear while the music is blasting. I ordered lunch combo Filet mignon with Scallops, everyone else order something else. Luckily, I was the only one who ordered scallops in the table. When scallions were served to me, it was barely browned(usually it's very crispy browned when I go to other restaurants), and it wasn't crispy at all. But I didn't really care for it at that time. Filet mignon was good, very soft and nice texture. However, it was so thin, I was expecting Filet Mignon thick. Other people ordered rib eye steak, it was so thin, I was thinking maybe they cut half on every meats they serve. Not worth compared to what you pay... Anyway, I got home and that night, I felt first funky and nauseous when I laid down to sleep. Then my stomach was hurting so much. My family has been going to Shogun for over 30 years. I used to celebrate every birthday there as a kid, so we've seen this restaurant evolve. The good part is that the food is still as delicious as we remember it. Everything is well seasoned and cooked just right. I still love their sauces, salad dressing, and soup. I just have to deduct a star because the chefs aren't as exciting as they used to be. Back then, each chef had their own personality and tricks, which made it fun, entertaining, interactive and different each time we went. They were so skilled! Now this place is more like Benihana and all the chefs have the same routine with the same music. There are no more surprises as you end up hearing the same sound effects and music throughout the night. Bring back the excitement! read more

We decided to go for lunch today and shortly after we were seated my husband saw a RAT run behind me and go underneath one of the other grills next to us. I promptly told our server who let the manager know. I didn't know if i should just leave at that point but my husband said it was probably a rare thing and that it wouldn't come out again. At least our food was going to be cooked in front of us. The manager came out and spent the next hour walking around the area with flashlights and mops bending down trying to find it and whispering to other employees about it. We made eye contact several times but he never ONCE came by to check on us or apologize for the situation. Honestly I'm upset I didn't just leave when it first happened because it ruined my whole experience. I was constantly worried I'd see the rat again. Halfway through lunch a giant fly flew into my face which was also very upsetting. I don't understand what's going on with this restaurant but I'm worried I ate at a filthy place today. Lastly I'm really upset the manager never came over to us. Our drinks were often empty. We also paid for a certain combo that the chef didn't even give us the chicken for and we still got charged. I guess there's no "sorry you were traumatized by seeing a rat behind you" discount. There should be though. Service and cleanliness are lacking and the cooking was meh. He doesn't get lost in an office, he is out on the floor making sure everyone is good and checking in on tables as well as refilling drinks/grabbing anything that is needed. If you wish to eat in sauna like conditions, this is your place to be. I am not joking, the temperature inside the restaurant just now was about 90 degrees. I asked several employees and they all stated that the AC was on but does not work very well. My suggestion is to wait for winter weather so that the outdoor ambient temperature can keep the restaurant cool inside. read more
