Nathan was hands down the BEST Benihana chef we've had in a very long time! We had a 6:30pm reservation on 8/5 at the Santa Anita location and he absolutely understood the assignment. He didn't hold back on the garlic butter (thank you! ) and everything tasted amazing because of it. Not only was the food incredible, but Nathan also put on the best show we've seen in years. He was funny, engaging, energetic and made the entire experience so much fun for everyone at the table even though it was just 5 of us. A shout-out to Tommy, the chef at the table across from us. Came in on a Monday night at 8 PM for a double birthday celebration. Our chef was amazing and the food was delicious, but the service and drinks left a lot to be desired. ​Our waitress rushed us through the entire meal. I stepped away to the restroom and came back to find to-go boxes already at my seat before I even finished eating, followed quickly by the check machine. When asked a basic question about whether our meals included ice cream, she awkwardly replied that she doesn't keep track of that. No one ended up singing happy birthday, either. ​To top it off, we ordered the $58 passion fruit punch bowl after having two regular drinks. However, it seems the behind the scenes team is incredibly lacking, as they messed up nearly everyone's orders. Our chef still made it an experience, but he was missing several plates of meat, orders of noodles, sauces, butters. He was also missing his lighter and the battery in the light up ball was out. Not all at once, either, so it interrupted the service many times. Towards the end, it became a blundering mess of the guests reassuring the chef that it was fine and wondering if he was in trouble. Not a great experience there, and it was highly off putting. This has been a ridiculous mess of a meal. Finally, we could not locate ANYONE in the shop to close our check, and overall we had already stayed for like three hours!! I literally was walking around and could not find anyone. Our server, Miguel, and chef Fausto were exceptional; they are truly five-star employees. However, the maitre d', host, or hostess's service was not up to par, warranting a one-star rating. While we appreciated being seated before our reservation time, we were informed upon seating that our server was on a break. Subsequently, after we had placed our order, we were then told that our chef was also on a break. It is perplexing why customers would be seated at a table where the assigned staff are currently on a break. While employees are certainly entitled to their breaks, it seems inappropriate to seat guests at a table where the necessary personnel are unavailable. I don't leave negative reviews but this was not okay. I was so disappointed with the consistency of dining in and take-out. My family saw the deal for the Mother's Day gift card promotion they were offering and decided to purchase them. The promotion is if you buy a $200 gift card, you get a $60 gift card back. The $60 gift card can't be used until after a certain day in May so we had $200 to spend on a lunch. We decided to get take-out on Monday (04/13) and got the lunch duet for 4 people. The total came out to be $151 and that's a pretty hefty amount to be spending on lunch alone and we expected the same portions as dine-in. We were so wrong. When we received the order, it looked like it was a kid's meal. A lunch duet is usually 2 different protein choices, soup or salad, fried rice, and a side of grilled zucchini and onions. For 3/4 of the lunch duets, we wanted chicken fried rice and it was $1 additional add-on to the total. There wasn't a single piece of chicken in our fried rice. The amount of protein we received was not okay. I got the scallops and calamari and I'd say there were only 2 full pieces of scallops that were cut into small pieces so it looked like there were a lot. The calamari looked like half of a full one. I think there was a total of 8 pieces of scallops and calamari in total. Even my boyfriend's chicken and steak julienne portions were insanely small. For a steak julienne, there's supposed to be sauce and onions on it. Lo and behold, dry steak with no sauce or onions. We still had some money left-over so my dad and I decided to go in person to test out our theory, dine-in and get more. Our theory was in fact correct. We probably received double the portions. I got four whole scallops and a full calamari steak with my order. The amount of rice we got was insane. It was probably the total amount of all four of our portions for just one person. We also got a lot more zucchini and onions with our individual order. We sat at the bar and the service was amazing. Even though there were 4 tables and only one server/bartender, he was amazing and attentive. I don't think there should be a bias for quantity control when it comes to dine-in vs. take-out. We visited Benihana, a party of 7, and unfortunately, this was the worst experience we've ever had at this restaurant. The service was extremely poor. Our waitress was not attentive at all. We were only told they were out of Yum Yum sauce after my daughter requested it three times, and by then, the food had already finished being made. The portioning by the cook was also unacceptable. One person in our party received only four pieces of chicken, which is completely unreasonable given the price of the meal. We informed the staff at least five times that it was my daughter's birthday. Meanwhile, there were three other birthday celebrations around us that were acknowledged and sung to, while my daughter's birthday was ignored, which was very disappointing. Because of ongoing issues with both the service and the bill, the manager had to be called over three times. Unfortunately, even the manager messed up the bill multiple times, adding to the frustration. The hostess greeted us and asked my dad and I a question when we entered. I should've said "in a moment" but stayed quiet. My mom entered and asked if she could check the gift card amount because my mom didn't know the amount. The hostess explained the it had to be done online. The hostess said we could choose anywhere we want to sit at the right side of the restaurant. We sat near the bar. There were floor to ceiling windows which helped with lighting. There was music playing on the loudspeaker. My mom had a problem with the hostess because she seemed like she hated her job or because of her demeanor. I mean a lot of gen Z does because jobs don't pay well, hours are long, there could be labor violations happening behind the scenes, there aren't many or any benefits, etc. The gen Z stare exists. If she's millennial or gen X I'm sorry for assuming what gen she belongs to. At least the waiter was more positive. He answered our questions about the multiple course meal my dad got. The Benihana menu seems small to me, I ordered the shrimp crunchy roll. The other items had 5 or so courses so it was pricey. I usually stick to restaurants with lower price points and with one entree and side or just one entree. Unfortunately, waiter came back and said that the sushi had to be remade for my mom's order. It took 15 or so minutes for it to be completed. Her order didn't come with wasabi or ginger. For my dad's order, the shrimp tempura didn't come with soy sauce. I got my crunchy shrimp rolls in 10 min or so. The amount of rolls was fair for the price. It's made up of imitation crab and tempura. It was delicious. An employee came and took our empty plates and utensils away. Finally the server came back and gave us our receipt and the card processor. My mom paid with the gift card and also a credit card. Most recent visit on 6/19 for a dine in lunch. Have visited the Arcadia location multiple times over the past couple years for takeout and dine in. My friend and I came to have lunch while out in the Arcadia area. Sat in the sushi bar area at a table. We each ordered the lunch boat with salmon ($25). Noticed they had a special Match Day Menu. Ordered the loaded fries too ($6). He had a Kirin light (think $9.50) and I had the Benihana iced tea ($4.50). Today's visit was 3 stars for food and 4 stars for service, but I have had better on prior visits (4&5 stars). Seems consistency is the major factor in this rating. The loaded fries was a win. Hot seasoned fries, crispy, topped with chicken, cheese, spicy sauce and jalapeno slices. I'm not a fan of their soup. I would call it broth with slivered mushrooms, fried onions and sliced green onion. LOL. Their salad is nicely chilled but drenched in their dressing (this is normal from what I've had there). It is okay for me, but my friend ordered his dressing on the side. The lunch boat portions are ample and decent for lunch. The salmon was a tad dry (should have asked for some sauce). The California roll was okay but not rolled properly as it falls apart easily. This is the normal experience here, so be gentle picking up with chopsticks when dipping in your soy sauce mix. Today we each received 3 pieces of shrimp tempura, but no vegetable tempura as noted on the menu and like my prior visits. The pieces of sashimi today were nice clean slices. On the prior visit, they were kind of mangled like they were sliced with a regular table knife. My friend was not happy with the sashimi on his prior visit so he skipped the sashimi on his order today and substituted with extra California roll. Let's just say he might have regretted that decision after seeing my order. Think they forgot the fresh fruit on our lunch boats too. We were a bit disappointed the soup, rice and salmon were not hot, more lukewarm or room temperature. Our server today was friendly, checked on us regularly, did her best and that is why I still gave her a 20% tip ($7). Maybe someone in the kitchen should be responsible for making sure orders are complete before the food is sent out to the table. If that had happened, maybe the food would be served hot and the lunch boats would be complete with the vegetable tempura and the fresh fruit. It is a great place to take a leisurely lunch, not feel rushed, have some good food, catch up with friends, check your emails or socials, watch something on their tv, etc. I would say food and service is hit and miss. Price is on the higher end but can be very reasonable or excellent if you take advantage of their special menus or use their loyalty program. My partner made a reservation for us on Valentine's Day to create a special memory, after I had a traumatic experience at another restaurant years ago. I traveled all the way from Riverside, about an hour just to get to this location hoping for a special evening. I went to the manager personally because I hoped we could resolve this quietly before I had to write this review, but he brushed us off. He gave us a small discount, as if that would suffice, but it didn't. We told him this was unprecedented ,we'd never had such an inconvenience. I asked him if he truly believed that what he did was enough, and he said yes. I told him that I expected a different outcome ,that they would fully cover this terrible experience, because it was just that bad. And to make matters worse, once we got our receipt, not only was our bill wrong, but the neighboring couple also had an extra charge ,they both had to return their receipts to the waitress to fix. I ordered a drink, and the first time it arrived, it was fine, but the second time, they ran out of milk ,so I was left with an extra charge and no drink. We planned this evening around other reservations later that day, and because of all this chaos, our entire night was derailed. I expected them to fully cover the terrible experience, but none of that happened. As a first-time customer, I left feeling broken-hearted, as if my trust in this restaurant was shattered. And to top it off, the chef threw his spatula by accident, and food even came flying toward me. This was supposed to be a special, joyful night, and instead, it was a complete disaster. First off, I hate yelping businesses, but after our experience I had to. Went for dinner , super busy so we decided to sit at the bar and have dinner. Everything was great until the food came out. First thing, two of use ordered dishes that were supposed to be filet mignon. They were not, very tough and chewy, most likely ribeye or flank steak. I would be very careful and inspect your meat if you order filet away from the usual hibachi grill. I feel they tried to substitute it out and hoped we wouldn't know the difference. I called them out on it and they did finally bring the filet. Second thing, everything had too much pepper on it , visibly. Our chicken , the fried rice and even the meat they tried to pass off as filet. This was the worst Benihana food experience. Do not recommend eating here, at least at the bar. I guess when the reservation went through, it didn't go through to be seated with the chef cooking in front of you. I mean you pay for the experience and I didn't get to have that during my dinner. Unfortunately, we were sat at the bar area and all of the tables that we tried to sit at were quite dirty. We asked the servers or workers if they can clean it, and none of them attended to it right away. Then after 10-15 min, I asked them can I have a rag and I can clean it myself. No one asked if I wanted onions in my rice, and I don't think white onion is a standard rice ingredient. The proteins were not seasoned enough, so you needed the sauces. My steak was fatty, and they won't give you a real knife to cut it. I had to use takeout utensils. The server was really busy and kept apologizing. They obviously need more staff. My family and I have been loyal customers of this Benihana in San Diego for years. We have celebrated our anniversary there, my grandkids' birthdays, and even held business meetings there, which is why what happened on March 21, 2026, was so heartbreaking. We had a reservation for 8 people at 7:15 p.m. for Teppan seating and checked in immediately. The front host, who I believe may have been named Demi, was exceptional. She was welcoming, attentive, playful with my grandkids, and even took our family picture. She made us feel appreciated from the moment we arrived. As we ordered, she repeatedly commented that it was "too much food," asked if we were going to share, and even told my daughter to split my grandkids' plate. That alone made all of us uncomfortable. The worst moment came when I ordered a Perfect Piña Margarita for my wife, which was going to be shared with my wife and daughter. When the waitress returned with an extra glass, she tried to pour the drink at the table. In the process, part of it spilled onto the hot table, creating steam, and we could all clearly see the liquid running down the outside of the glass, over her hand, between her fingers, and dripping from her nails into my daughter's glass. We were shocked. I told her that was not right, and she simply walked away. Later, when I tried to add a lobster tail, she again told us it was "too much food," as though she had authority to decide what we could order. At that point, my family was already upset and had lost our appetite. I asked to speak with the manager. The night manager, Terri, arrived already confrontational, cut me off while I was explaining the situation, and defended the waitress by saying that many people order food they cannot pay for. I found that remark deeply offensive. I felt my family was being stereotyped and discriminated against, possibly because we are Hispanic. When I told her that was not right and that I would be speaking with management, she replied, "I am the manager," and then told us in front of other tables to clear the table. We left humiliated, heartbroken, and disgusted. Another server gave us the number to report the incident and said this was not the first time. Came for mother's day, we've been multiple times but this was our best experience yet Chris was our chef, dude was a level above. If I could pick my own chef going forward he'd be my guy. high energy, great theatrics and original jokes.
