I had a great experience at Shiro's. My boyfriend and I were in Seattle for the weekend and wanted to have a nice dinner. We made a reservation 2 weeks earlier. They offer a la carte options but we could not resist the $75 omakase. We also ordered the Black Cod Kasuzuke ($18) per our waitress's recommendation. This might have been the best part of the night! Crispy skin with buttery, moist meat. It was to die for. I would recommend devouring it right away because it is simply not as good when it cools down. Organic tofu miso soup ($3.50) was good! The pieces of yuzu zest surprised me. Omakase came with 19 pieces of nigiri included in 4 courses. Our favorite course was the first (sea bass and sea bream/madai were particularly noteworthy), but all courses were fresh and delicious. It is a really great deal for a filling meal. For dessert we had a matcha tiramisu ($9) which was the perfect ending to the night. It was not sweet at all so it didn't leave us feeling heavy. So good! First omakase and I'm already craving my next. Chefs Sean and toro made this experience feel extremely authentic with their story telling of the history of each fish. They're happy to teach and want you to take pictures and get up and close to the action. Chef table course was plenty of food but at the end of service you can ask for more rolls and dessert. TL:DNR - food is delicious and fresh. Service was perfect and not overbearing. Reservation recommended. Ambience: Quiet. Cozy, but not stuffy. Would highly recommend getting a reservation. We didn't think of it and had to wait an hour and a half (totally worth it, by the way), so we went to a bar down the street until they texted us with an available table. There's bar seating right by the sushi chefs and there's maybe 15 tables, so it doesn't get too loud. The place is casual and friendly. Service: Our server was attentive but not overbearing. I felt like every dish and refill of water was the appropriate amount of time. We weren't looking for her for water refills nor food. She pointed out every fish, which course, and how to consume (with or without extra sauce, in what order). Food: The night we went was a four course omakase meal for $85. (I'm not sure if this is how this restaurant usually operates, but we were totally fine with the options.) They had other options that you can add to the meal like appetizers, etc. Good golly the food was delicious. The fish was fresh, buttery smooth, and wonderfully delightful. Our server informed us how to consume each fish, in what order, with or without sauce (go by the recommendations - there were a few that had a very light yuzu drizzle that would have been drowned and overpowered with additional sauce). I even ate the whole fish heads. Crunchy, delightful, tasty. We capped our meal with the hojicha tiramisu, which was the perfect ending to our meal. The creme was fluffy without being too soft or dense. The cake portion was well soaked without feeling soggy or overly hard. The hojicha tea was robust and roasty without feeling burnt or overpowering. Honestly speaking, I think we got a deal for the quality of the food and I'd highly recommend making a visit. I saw rave reviews and thought I'd switch up my usual sushi go to for take out from Shiro. I got the Nigiri 10 piece/assortment + miso soup. Fish, shrimp, and miso was good, fresh, clean. Egg (which was like a sweet folded mini omelet) was a fun addition. Cucumber roll seemed unnecessary (but I guess a palate cleanser and a piece of veggie can't hurt). Overall, it was good and interesting to try sushi made from a particular technique - but maybe not mind-blowing since I didn't get the omakase? Inside looked pretty intimate so might be romantic for a date night. I'd eat there again when I'm craving simple sushi without too many frills. Tip: Parking for pick up is not easy! I had been looking forward to my Shiro's reservation for a few weeks now! I made my reservation about 2 weeks ahead of time and there were plenty of time slots available. They are only doing the chef's omakase menu which changes slightly everyday, and is $75 per person for a 4 course / 19 piece nigiri. When eating the fish, I could tell that the quality was unbeatable. The courses came out pretty quickly, but all were delicious and well presented. There was lots of variety across the courses with everything from salmon, tuna, eel, uni (sea urchin), etc. My favorite course was the 4 piece tuna plate which came with a delicious piece of fatty tuna. I wasn't too full after the 19 pieces, so I tried the matcha Tiramisu and the Mizu Shingen Mochi. Matcha tiramisu had matcha sprinkled on top (not throughout) with nuts and strawberries. Had a table reservation. Perhaps the bar-experience would have been better? Shiro's is my 2nd omakase experience and it was mid at best. We also had two flies that joined us the whole night. I don't know...maybe I am comparing too much to my first experience. For my first omakase, the chef would tell us stories, what region this fish came from, and how the food came about. Such good value here! Whether it's the $75 omakase for 19 pieces of nigiri or their Seattle restaurant week take out, you're going to be getting good fish for your money. I never been to Kashiba so I can't compare but I did have omakase in Japan (Sushi Tanabe), so hopefully I have some credibility. The fish at Shiro is very good for the price. Without breaking the bank, it will be hard to get this quantity and quality in the area. The service is efficient while making sure everything is up to your standards. They explain what each fish is, a suggestion on how much soy sauce to add, and ensure all your questions are answered. My gf and I sat near the bar and the sushi chefs were funny to talk to and it was obvious they enjoyed their craft. Personal favorites of mine were the kanpachi, sweet shrimp, salmon, and of course otoro tuna. The server recommendations are perfect on how to eat each one. We also ordered the black cod which was delicious and perfectly cooked. The fish separates easily with slight firmness and just a nice addition to a meal. And lastly, the matcha tiramisu is a must. They do an excellent job here. Overall, Shiro may not be the number one best sushi in Seattle but don't overlook it. It's number one for its price range and value. It's worth your time and money for sure and we've continued to come back. Although omakase is considered a fine dining experience, I would say the atmosphere is a little more causal here. For $85 per person this omakase was worth for me!! You are served 4 courses, a total of 19 sushi pieces. Separately we ordered the iced matcha (which comes in a large fancy pitcher and it was so naturally sweet) and the signature miso glazed black cod, and the hojicha panna cotta. I wish I could've taken a picture of my menu that they took away while I was in the bathroom... but I would take my chopstick and mark the pieces I liked with a dab of soy sauce on the paper I was a big fan of all the yellowtail sushi served in the first course. I realized that I like translucent looking sashimi?? Because it's a leaner strong fish, the texture reflects that in a good way. My next favorite was the third course with the tunas. They had one with a Yuzu marinade and it was incredible. The star of the show was the black cod holy. It was the best thing off the menu and came out piping hot, but the fish just melted in your mouth and the flavor was sweet salty buttery. You just sit there amazed at how a fish can taste this good. Damn. Let's jump to the last course because I was pleasantly surprised with the uni, and tamago. The uni was served cold and just slithered down your throat leaving a rich creamy trail of the ocean. Am I getting poetic here?? I usually don't like tamago or so I thought until I had this one. It was like a soufflé cake! And made me reconsider that all the other tamagos I must have had gave a bad wrap to what I thought it would be. My group (of 3) and I were so lucky to be seated on same day via walk in at a table. We called in advance that day and went around 9:15pm and was seated pretty shortly after. I would recommend making reservations still just to be safe because we went in knowing we may not be seated. This was my first time have omakase and I was blown away!!! The service was great, they went through each dish and how we should best enjoy them. The sushi was so fresh and melted in my mouth, there was a variety of different fish with different textures. I was surprised at how full I was towards the end, probably due to some of the rice with the sushi. There was one tofu dish that was just one tofu but it was SO insanely good and so comforting. 10/10 recommend trying this place at least once! read more

Food - I got the dining table omakase ($85 a person) and was served a wide variety of fish from all over the US and world. I really enjoyed the super fatty tuna (last piece of the tuna 4 ways plate) and the black cod karaage. The black cod karaage was honestly my favorite dish that night because it was fried to perfection on the outside and had a melt in your mouth inside from the super tender fish. I'd go back just for the black cod karaage haha. I only docked a star because they use regular rice instead of sushi rice, which I think makes a big difference. My top sushi spot is still Saru Sushi Bar in SF Service - one member of our table had a small piece of tendon in one of her tuna pieces and our server noticed that our party member had set that bit of tendon aside. Our server immediately apologized and brought a new piece over, which I thought was really thoughtful. The staff were all very welcoming and nice. Ambiance - the interior was a bit older, but the warm lighting and wood interior made it feel cozy. Though I heard this was not the case before COVID, this place currently only offers $75 omakase. For 19 pieces over 4 courses, that was what I would have gone for anyways since I've definitely paid way more for a lot less when it comes to omakase. I made a reservation a week in advance for my boyfriend's birthday dinner and although we arrived a bit late from our time-crunched sightseeing, they were more than welcoming. Our waiter was also super sweet and very informative about each individual item! Though every piece was such an amazing experience, I have to say that the uni and tuna done 4 ways was my absolute favorite. This is coming from someone who used to religiously eat freshly shucked Santa Barbara uni on a regular basis, so I really know my uni. The uni and otoro here are top tier and made the entire experience more than worth it. Honestly, let down by my experience here for dinner tonight. Heard the raving reviews and had to try it for our Seattle trip. Although the value sounds good for the non counter set course (19 pieces, 85$), I would have much rather preferred spending 50$ more at a proper omakase experience. I absolutely loved my experience at Shiro's sushi. This is not your average sushi buffet or trappers where you will find deep fried rolls with sauce. This is a place you come to experience a high class Japanese tasting menu and experience different types of fish from around the world. The price to performance ratio here is excellent. $85 for 19 pieces of high quality fresh nigiri is actually unheard of anywhere else. I would note that the fish is a bit on the thinner side but you will definitely not leave hungry. Most notable from the tasting menu was the amberjack, tuna toro platter, and the flounder. Such rich and buttery flavors. We also tried the miso black cod for our appetizer and it was a standout. Service was excellent here and the origin of each fish was carefully explained. Shiro's will always have a special place in my heart. Shiro's is the first place I've ever had omakase sushi and it's the first place where I've ever tried toro. I knew my trip back to Seattle for the first time in 7 years had to include a visit to Shiro's. I was so happy I decided to book an omakase for myself my first night back in Seattle. It hasn't changed much since covid. Last time I dined there was 2014. The sushi bar still looks exactly the same once you go down the little hall. I had such a wonderful omakase dinner with sushi chefs Kurisu (Chris :D) and Taro. Kurisu-san and Taro-san took us on an adventure filled with flavors and many types of fish I've never had before. I really wish I was able to take notes during this dinner because it had so many rare types of fish! I know some were called things like Danger snapper (probably not?) and tilefish. One memorable bite was definitely the nigiri piece where chef Kurisu put a little dot of salted plum paste, a flower, and something else- it was this really unique note of flavor that elevated the bite of nigiri into the next level. I also loved the way Kurisu-san blow torched the toro- the fish melted in your mouth. Shiro's will always be one of my favorite sushi bars- I love Shiro's so much. First time here and I'm already finding an excuse to come back! I made reservations 2 months in advance to make sure that we would get a table, and I'm glad we did because they were packed for a Thursday evening! First of all, everyone was so nice and welcoming which made us feel comfortable right away. The restaurant isn't very big, so tables were pretty close to each other - were sat in the back corner next to couple and our waitress could barely move around. The food was exceptional and the Omakase course is filling, so you can skip the extra appetizers if you don't want to spend more. The total for 2 of us with 2 Omakase courses, 2 appetizers, and a drink was a little over $270 after tip. Everything was super fresh and although I'm an avid sushi eater, I've only ever tasted fish this fresh in Japan. I'm usually not a fan of Uni or Ikura because they're usually too fishy but every single ingredient here was sweet and delicious! We got to try the seasonal Shiro's Chawanmushi ($20) and although it was delicious, I wouldn't get it again because it was smaller than I had expected. We also tried their popular Black Cod and unfortunately, I wasn't a big fan because of the flavor but it was flaky and literally melted in my mouth. Out of the 4 courses from the Omakase, my favorites are the 2nd and the 4th course. The 2nd course had so many fresh flavors; the sweet shrimp and the scallop were definitely my favorites because they were so soft and sweet. Everything in the 4th course was amazing my and mind blowing; they saved the best for last! We also ordered the Matcha Tiramisu and it was just the right amount of sweet with the rich matcha flavor. Phenomenal dining experience! We arrived 10 minutes before our appointment & were seated right away next to the sushi Chef. They started serving once everyone who booked for the time slot (6:30pm, 8 people for us) were seated. Even the starters were melting in my mouth. The main Chef, Sean, was very informative to explain what every piece entails & he was hilarious throughout the dining experience. 2nd dish was grilled fish of choice & was very moist and full of flavor. Lastly we got 15 pieces of Chef hand picked nigiri of choice, and Mamma Mia it was just delicious. I was only able to take 1st piece picture because after that my focus was 100% geared into feeling the texture and taste. Sean surely made our 1st Seattle trip memorable with our last day meal. I was able to book a last minute reservation for the sushi bar omakase ($125.) i've had quite a few omakase experiences and this one checked all the boxes. Food: fish quality was amazing. The preparation, toppings, and flavors were all top notch. I've never liked uni very much...even the uni i tried in Japan, i wasn't incredibly fond of. Maybe its an acquired taste, or maybe the uni quality/preparation here is so good it made me a huge fan? I did an add on of monkfish liver per Seans recommendation (ive never had it before so i was a little wary.) the way Sean prepared it was divine. Service: everyone was great. The person who sat us, the servers taking care of our drinks/clearing plates. Sean was also awesome. He was very knowledgable of all the fish we were being served. He spoke about seasonality, the specific reason the fish tasted that way--how the environment of the fish influenced the taste. He was very conversational, kind, funny, and really engaged with the people sitting at the sushi bar. He was consistently asking for feedback from us, asking our favorites etc. it showed me he cares about what is being served to us. When i go back, i hope Sean is there taking care of us! Price: altogether i paid $205 for the sushi bar experience, 2 beers, the extra monkfish dish, and tip. I was seeing the table omakase being prepared near us and it also looked great. I do think, for the extra $40, it is worth sitting at the bar. The menu was different at the bar, and in my opinion, omakase really is about the experience sitting face to face with the chef. Shiro's sushi has been on my bucket list of must-try restaurants in the Seattle area - it's been suggested by so many people and lists! I definitely wanted to try the Omakase option offered by Shiro's, so we booked a month in advance to get a 6:30pm sushi bar spot. A month may have been a bit more on the cautious side, but we wanted to guarantee our spot. We arrived at the restaurant at 6:30pm, and had another additional 15 - 20 minute wait for the previous Omakase group to finish. This is just a heads up if you are planning on doing the sushi bar - it may be a bit later than the reserved time. The omakase at the time included, a starter, then a grilled Japanese butterfish entree, and lastly the 15 piece nigiri picked by the chef. We also ordered some sake recommended by the waitress to accompany the sushi to serve as a palate cleanser. The sushi starter included a variety of fish, from salmon, tuna, mushrooms, taro, and squash. The fish is very fresh, and gives a smooth buttery and refreshing taste - you can definitely taste the quality here! There also are unique flavor profiles like the butternut squash smoked with bonito - I haven't really considered squash with a smokey seafood taste, and I'm a fan of it! I would say that my favorite out of the starter plate was the Zuke Salmon with the mashed taro - that was extremely rich and velvety smooth in it's texture, the freshness of the salmon was really enhanced by the smoothness of the mashed taro. The next thing before the nigiri was the butterfish - I haven't had butterfish before and I would say that the fish is true to it's name! The texture was very smooth and had a subtle smokey flavor that was comforting. The omakase itself was both a dinner and show! The chef would explain what cuts of the fish he was selected and why they were picked. There even were some instances where he would break out the torch and lightly torch the fattier cuts of fish so the fat would seep down into the rice. There were so many different delicious nigiris presented in this omakase, but I would say my favorites were the toro (fatty tuna) since it wasn't too fatty and had a pleasant blend of fattiness and leanness, and the sea urchin wrap at the end, which was scrumptious and literally melt in your mouth smooth with no hint of fishiness. In the end it was $197 after tax and tip for the entire experience, and I would say that this definitely isn't the place you go often, likely more for a celebration or special event. But it definitely was an interesting experience with how the food was presented and explained by the chef. I would like to revisit Shiro's sometime in the future to try their non-omakase dining experience to see what that's like. Definitely a solid place to get some fresh sushi! (4.5 stars) read more

Second meal of the seattle restaurant in shiro, which i admired a long time. however it is a little disappointed, although the price is reasonalbe. The takeover shushi combo charges 22 dollor. the sushi rice is too firm and seperate and without vinegar and a slice of sweetness. the fish on top is OK. The mustard is too little in the box and had little flavor. The fish should be firm and shiny, and never wet or greasy. Moreover, the tempura vege in the roll has stem that made it hard to swallow, which made the overall taste minus. read more

Simply amazing. I am a sushi lover and have always wanted to do an Omakase dinner. I found myself in Seattle this past weekend after a cruise with a night stay in a local hotel before a flight the next morning. I booked a month in advanced after reading great reviews. This experience was special and sooo delicious! The Sushi Chef Chris (Krisu in Japanese if I recall, he's from Hokkaido) was so attentive and kind. He noticed I was a lefty and began placing the sushi pieces at a different angle for me. He made conversation with each of the 7 of us at the sushi bar and even adjusted his menu for a shellfish allergy, a tuna allergy and a gluten allergy giving each person who would be affected by the course something he felt similar and explained in just as much detail as the planned course. I usually love a little soy sauce with my sushi on the fish of course but each piece was perfectly seasoned with care, some charcoal blowtorched and each piece was handled with care and pride. Chris engaged with me when he realized I was a party of one and seemed to be a very genuinely caring person. I loved the "no rules" environment as it helped everyone feel relaxed. An elevated experience with care to each piece but without any "stuffiness" I accidentally forgot a couple pictures (Uni was one and a Medium Fatty Toro another that I recall) because I was so excited to try the pieces. If you have a chance to go to Shiros for Omakase at the bar do it...don't worry about the price tag because it will be worth the experience. The sushi omakase is amazing! My husband and I have eaten once at a table, and twice at the bar for omakaze. We have enjoyed every single experience at Shiros. At the table, there's a set menu that you can order and the servers will bring out the dishes and explain each dish. At the omakaze bar, we love chatting with Sean as he prepares the sushi. He explains every piece of sushi he prepares, and you can see the craft with which he makes the nigiri. At the end, if you're still not full, Sean is more than happy to suggest a few other nigiri to eat as add-ons. They also have a dessert menu after the omakase. Last night my husband and I ordered 2 desserts - the matcha tiramisu and the mochi (it's more like jelly than mochi, and looks like a gigantic raindrop). Both were delicious! Long overdue post. My husband and I always try to do an omakase meal every time we travel. On our last trip to Seattle, we stumbled across Shiro's during our itinerary planning. A 4 course chef's choice sushi tasting menu for $75/person (now $85/person) was a steal! We made reservations about 3-4 weeks before our trip. They are located in Downtown Seattle (Bell Town District), and was about a 15 minute walk from our hotel. We weren't able to get a seat at the chef's counter so we sat at one of the dining tables. Despite this, we still had a fantastic dining experience. Our server was attentive and explained which nigiri piece we were eating as well as how to eat it. Each course was excellent. The fish was extremely fresh and rivaled the quality of the omakase I have had in Japan. Rice was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The quality of the ingredients and skillfulness of the technique was apparent in each piece. The nigiri was so delicious, we ended up ordering additional items after we finished our omakase set. I cannot rave enough about Shiro's. An omakase experience of this quality is unheard of at the price they are charging. I have had omakase at more expensive restaurants and it does not hold a candle to the dining experience I had at Shiro's. If you are in the area or planning to travel to Seattle, I highly recommend making a reservation at Shiro's. I will be returning the next time I am in Seattle! read more

Shiro's never disappoints me. I came here many times before the pandemic (2014-2018) for omakase and table dining. I remember long time ago, you need to stand in front of the door for dinner opening and got a seat for sushi counter. Now it's all online reservation! Food-wise: fish is always fresh and seasonal, no doubt. Oddly I fell in love with the squash at the first appetizer plate. I miss the Abalone sashimi here in the past and hopefully one day they could have it again. The chef was very friendly and enjoyed having interaction with the customers. The omakase is such a great deal. I believe we had 19 pieces of sushi and ALL of the fish were so fresh. I'm usually not a big ginger person but the pickled ginger tasted amazing. It's a small sushi restaurant with the bar at the front of the shop. Because we had a big party, we called to make a reservation and was seated at the back of the restaurant. The service could have been better. The hostess is so sweet, but the waiter who helped our table was a bit clumsy. He knocked into a few of my friends with plates a few times and accidentally spilled one of the soy sauce. When he explained the sushi to us, he would start by talking to us but slowly turn his head away so his voice drifted away. We ended up looking at the menu to know what we were eating and asked our friends who have been here before how they ate it last time (with or without soy sauce). At the end of the day the food was good but we wished our waiter was more attentive and mindful. read more

From beginning to end, Shiro's was an incredible experience. We made reservations about 2 weeks in advance of a vacation to Seattle and had the choice of table or bar omakase. We opted for the tableside service as it's a bit cheaper, but next time I would absolutely spring for the bar. Despite being a small, highly rated restaurant, the ambiance is somewhat casual. No table clothes or fussiness to the decor. Even though Shiro's offers an amazing dining experience it does not feel intimidating or exclusive; you get the sense this is a place where it is ok to ask questions, have fun and relax. We arrived about 15 minutes early but were seated right away. The server brought out water and dishes of ginger, and quickly confirmed allergies and dietary restrictions. Almost immediately after the first course (5 different pieces of white fish) was served and he explained each of the pieces before we dug in. Before the second course, we had a chance to order appetizers (we passed--saving room for that sushi!) and drinks (we orders hot and cold sake) which arrived before round 2. My husband does not eat shrimp so when the second course was served they replaced the shrimp nigiri with yellowtail tuna for him. Third course was my favorite--tuna 4 ways--and the fourth concluded the meal with more fatty tuna, uni, eel and tamago for me--we learned that the tamago also contains shrimp so my husband got another piece of salmon instead. The sushi, as expected, is phenomenal. The rice is well seasoned and shaped, and the fish is cut with care. Everything is served about room temperature, which helps the flavors come through. I appreciated that rather than just fish and rice, the chefs composed specific bites. Some pieces had wasabi under the fish; some had yuzu brushed on top; some had flaky salt; others came preseasoned with soy. The servers explained each piece and advised when to add soy sauce and when to eat it as-is. In every case I enjoyed it! My favorite pieces of the night were the sockeye salmon, bonito, and fatty tuna--but the pieces that surprised me the most were the scallop, the Atlantic salmon, and the shrimp (its tempura fried head was surprisingly flavorful, light and crispy). There was the option to buy additional pieces of nigiri at the end of the fourth course, but we were pretty satisfied with the meal. (If you are starving coming into it though, you might want more or some of the appetizers.) We capped off the night with hojicha tiramisu which was delicately flavored, light and just the right amount of sweetness. read more

I had an amazing experience here! I made a reservation a few days in advance for table omakase, and it was quite easy to snag a reservation on a late Friday night. Overall I enjoyed this experience and I definitely thought the price of $85 per person was worth it for 19 pieces with high quality ingredients. My favorite pieces were the Bluefin Tunas by far. The service was also great, with the servers going into more detail about each piece of sushi and letting us know if we should pair it with soy sauce or not. However, I did leave not full so I would recommend ordering the appetizers or desserts along with the omakase if you are willing to spend more. read more

This is one is the only upscale sushi restaurants I've been to in Seattle and I was very impressed. The sushi/omakase was delicious, fresh, and exceeded my expectations. We chose the $85/person experience and it was well worth it. The service was also great - the staff/waitresses did a great job explaining each roll and ensuring we were being taken care of.
