LOVED IT!! I am staying in Omaha for two weeks due to work. It's always difficult on the weekends to find a place and go out for breakfast or lunch. The easy thing is fast food, but it gets old and it's not great. I looked online and took a chance on a place nearby, called Shirley's Diner. The venue looked good, and the prices were awesome. I got there and it's a cute little place and it was buzzing, but not overly packed when I arrived. I told them I needed a table for one and they split up a four top and found a seat for me that was perfect. I didn't feel too crunched up against other tables or anything. The server I had was Abbie. Her energy is infectious and perfect for a Sunday morning brunch. She's quick, efficient, great at her job, and so good at participating in the small talk, but keeping things moving. I ordered hot tea with water on the side, the hash brown breakfast with my eggs over medium and gravy on the side with a biscuit added on. My total was just over $19. There is so much food. It was a large order of hashbrowns that I could not easily fit into both hands if I tried. Two eggs, cooked perfectly, four slices of bacon, the cream gravy, and the biscuit I added. I couldn't even eat a third of it and I regretted that I did not have a way to bring it back to the hotel and warm it up effectively. I hated leaving any of it on the table, but it was nothing short of amazing. Both tables on either side of me ordered the breakfast burrito. That was my second choice and it looked awesome! I'm glad I didn't get it because it was so big. It would've been three meals for me lol! Both tables expressed how amazing it was and I think the options for the meat that you can get are chicken or steak. I can't recommend this place enough. I will likely go back. They didn't care if I hung out and read my book a little bit. The only reason I left and didn't hang around for another cup of tea was because of the line forming at the door. Check this place out, bring an empty stomach, an extra cash to tip your server. I gladly left a $15 tip on top of a $20 total. I would do it again. read more

Let's see, I guess the best place to start is when I searched for breakfast near me. Shirley's didn't come up on Google's first page but the children had requested food, so we went from point A to point B. Doesn't have that "dinner" look. We couldn't tell if it wanted to be an upscale barbecue, or maybe an independent Applebee's? So, the exterior and interior didn't match the food and the people eating. On a Wednesday, just after 1730hrs and it was mid-month to, it was full. 90% of the customers where pushing mid to late 70's and most staff looked teens to early twenties, except the two cooks. Who ever assigned who does what tables, needs retrianed. Some servers had one or two tables and hung out behind the counter, chatting and waiting for food. The young lady who had us, and what seemed the majority of tables,, ran her tail off trying to keep up. She did a really good job with what was given to her. Our cups wher never empty for long and as she passed, she never failed to check on us. I saw other servers with fewer tables, waiting longer then we did for our meal. Those old folks can get pretty cranky when you cutting into there Jeopardy time. First thing about food, is how you get your drinks. We usually all do waters, because soda can be as high as an appetizer. I did allow my youngest a Sprite, no one else wanted anything and I got milk with my meal. Waters came out with little ice, I understand it's that winter spring thing but Americans like ice. The water didn't taste like chlorinated pool water, like many of the chain outfits do. The food...was really good. Pancakes, where cooked like they've cooked pancakes before. All of our eggs where how we asked for. I think the killed maybe six potatoes per plate for the hashbrowns, though I like mine really crispy, overone over voted me! There biscuits where fantastic, even if they where fake they tasted better then some homemade ones and they gave my youngest daughter so much, that two additional people assisted in finishing them. Only thing with food was the sausage. If you use pre-made patties don't burn the skins on the links. They tasted fine but looked pretty rough. Overall, we will probably go back. Food is a little higher then some of the chain outfits, though quality and service make up for it all. read more

I've had this place bookmarked for a long time and I finally went to Shirley's Diner today for lunch with a work buddy. It's not much to look like on the outside and you walk in and they have some odd and gaudy decorations, but its mostly themed like an old diner. Every table has a theme and today we sat at the Wizard of Oz themed booth. Very cool. The waitress and bus boy were super nice. We ordered and waited a little less than 10 minutes for our food. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast with egg whites. I didn't know, but they actually charge $.80 extra for egg whites. It would have been nice to know that when I ordered. The food comes out and the portions are just massive. A heaping piece of chicken fried steak, (which is actually pork from what our waitress told us), hash browns and eggs with your choice of toast or pancakes for less than $10 - pretty good deal. The chicken fried steak was just okay to me. It was fresh and hot, but not a lot of flavor in the breading. The country gravy was pretty good. The hash browns, eggs, and toast were good as well. Overall, everything was great. The food was good, not great. The service was awesome. And the decor probably needs a little updating. read more

VERY disappointed! Ordered hot roast beef sandwich, friend ordered French dip. We asked if beef came sliced or more in chunks like a roast. (Sliced can be tough.) Waitress said meat was shaved. Beef came sliced and was VERY tough!! It had so much fiber it was unchewable. I ate some of my mashed potatoes and gravy and bread. I took meat home thinking I could pick meat apart from fiber and make it edible. I ended up tossing it away and didn't even offer it to my dogs! My friend could hardly get half of her sandwich down. I've never had such tough roast beef. It was more like leather and had no taste. It was aweful! In hindsight I regret not complaining and sending it back. I suppose I didn't because they were rushing to get diner ready to close after lunch, and I didn't want to be a "Karen." read more

Good place for breakfast. I have never been disappointed in the food here at Shirley's. It can get very busy on the weekend but weekdays aren't so bad. I usually stick with a traditional bacon/eggs/hasbrowns/pancake breakfast when here. The service is always good and the food is always cooked properly to order. read more

One of the best if not the best restaurant in Omaha for classic diner style food. We've been eating here for years and have never had a bad meal. I have wanted to try this place for so long. I never think about it except when I drive by it and due to it's limited hours, they are typically closed. However, this time when planning to meet a friend - I did a Yelp search for things in the area and this popped up so I was all in. The menu is soooo good and there were so many options that I want to try. I'm so glad this experience was such a good one because now I can't wait to go back and try something like the breakfast menu. I had the King burger and my friend had the mushroom burger. We were both very please and surprised - a half pound burger is a lot of food and I don't think that either of us finished our burgers. So good and the staff was great and very attentive. read more

We visited Shirley diner for lunch today. It was our first visit. We had a 15 minute wait to be seated. It took several minutes to get menus and our drink order. Service was very slow and poor the entire visit. The delay from placing our ice tea order and when we received it was almost 10 minutes . We places our lunch orders when we received our drinks. We didn't see or hear from the waitress again until we received our meals we didn't get drink refills until our meals were fished and time to get out bill. I ordered the western omelet with hash browns and pancakes. The omelet and hash brows were not seasoned. The hash browns were undercooked. The omelet was a paper thin rolled omelet. The pancakes were cold and rubbery. My wife ordered a rueben sandwich. She said it was average. My son ordered country hash browns. He said they were ok not great. I will say the portion sizes were large but the quality was lacking. I would not order the omelet again. I'm not certain we will be back. We were looking for a Pizza Hut buffet, but found that this location had changed to Shirleys Dinner. So we stopped in. Boy is this place packed for lunch! Staff friendly and attentive. Got the combo - grilled cheese and salad with blue cheese. Menu said that salad was made from iceberg lettuce, but don't be fooled, it actually had 3 or 4 different types. Blue cheese dressing was just so so. Tasted more like Ranch. Grilled cheese was ok, but sort of boring. No choices given for type of bread and/or cheeses. Interesting wall decor. One booth had a tribute to James Dean, another to Marilyn, another to Elvis with mini juke boxes at the table. Very attentive staff. Extra napkins left without asking, head waitress stopped by several times to see if there was anyway to make our meal better, even though our waitress had us all taken care of. read more

Just picked up to go for my husband who wasn't feeling well so thought he might like some comfort food. Ordered chicken fried chicken. Picked up, half way home, received a call they accidentally gave me chicken fried steak. Apologized and said the chicken fried chicken was waiting for me. Turned around, went in to grab it and they wanted the chicken fried steak back!Now this this not about getting a free meal! We are in a global pandemic (plus 100s of other reasons that's unacceptable)and they wanted that food back to serve to someone else!!! I said to the young man "you know, you can't give that to someone else since I left with it?" His response "you didn't open it did you?" I simply left with the chicken fried chicken. We came on a busy Saturday and tried their pankaces, sausage, bacon, and eggs. What a nice treat! I have had better homemade buttermilk pancakes, but there were really good. The dining area is a bit smaller for the number of customers, thus the wait. The only reason this is four stars is because of the service. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. We had to wait about 10 minutes after being seated to get recognized by the wait staff. The drinks came slowly and after 20 minutes of sitting at out table, we finally got our order taken. Overall, a bit too long for service and wait for our food. In short, we will be back. We just won't be running back. read more

Inhaled EVERYTHING on my plate! Late Saturday afternoon, when it was getting cold..againnn.. and cloudy and just plain dreary, we were STARVING! We hadn't eaten since breakfast because we were just going to be running a few errands and then would be home. The errands took way longer than anticipated, of course, and we found ourselves out in Millard trying to figure out where we could eat and quickly! The Mr. came up with Shirley's, we hadn't eaten there in like, forever, since at the old place they closed earlier. The new place is very cute, the waitstaff friendly and efficient, the tables and floors clean. We ordered our food and it came out very quickly, hot and yummy! We ate everything! The mashed potatoes were really mashed potatoes, the bread for the sandwich was nice and thick, the only drawback maybe a little over done on the gravy, but that is a personal preference..you do you..The Mr.'s reuben was generous, well toasted and dressed.. he did say he wouldn't order the coleslaw again, but another personal choice, you do you.. This is one of those places where you can go and everyone can find something they will love. My ex and I share 11 kids (ages 7 - 25) and when we bring them here, we have one heck of a happy crew. We attempt to try something new every time we are here, but we have such favorites, it's hard. You can't go wrong with any of the appetizers - poutine (my fave), pulled pork tot-chos, onion rings, fried pickles, or pretzel bites (my 17 year old's favorite). I personally enjoy the pork schnitzel or the hot turkey, but my ex likes the reuben. Honestly, it's all good, so you should just drop in and find out for yourself. We had brunch recently with the family. My grandson ordered a meal which included 2 pancakes. He asked the server if he could substitute a piece of french toast for the pancakes and she said it was no problem. Then, the bill came. I was shocked to see $7.99 for one piece of french toast! So, I asked for the manager. He was very arrogant and a bit of a smart ass who couldn't care less about the overcharge. I will NEVER go back to this place. They have lost a longtime client and I will spread the word of the intentional rip off I experienced, and hope others take my advice and shun this place. read more

Shirley's Diner is a solid diner experience. The same people are working there every time we go in, the food is consistently good, and it just looks like a diner should look. There is lots of vintage stuff decorating the place and each booth has an old school jukebox in it. They don't work but it still takes me back to an easier time when you could drop a quarter and hear Patsy Cline at your table. If only they worked now.....oh well. We've only done lunch once but we stop in for breakfast once every couple of months. I usually grab an omelette of some sort and my wife goes with scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast. No complaints at all. The hash browns are good and the service is always efficient and friendly. First time I've been here... its a Friday so they were swamped. The service was their saving grace this evening. Our server was a younger girl that was very attentive... Sometimes, that can turn a mediocre visit into a pleasant one. As for the food; I ordered the philly-cheese steak and it was a mess. A greasy, inedible, embarrassment on a plate... The onion rings were decent though, fries decent, chili was so-so... Portion size of the food was good however! Overall, this was a mediocre dining establishment with a great server. On a rough note; Whoever makes the philly-steaks in this place should be locked in a closet where he or she cannot do any additional damage to an otherwise decent little eatery & its reputation! 2-stars, but I would actually try eating something else here again. Had breakfast for lunch during the week. Busy restaurant, but we were seated right away. Christina was our waitress and did her best to keep up. My wife the ham and eggs. She stated it was the best ham she had in a long time. Eggs were a bit overcooked, but the rest of her meal was fine. I had a #1 - 2 eggs, hash browns, sausage, and 2 pancakes. I was hungry. My boyfriend had been telling me about a cool diner that one of his co-workers took him to and that I would like to cause of all the vintage decorations. We weren't doing anything so we decided to check it out. When we arrived, I was wondering where the diner was located since we had drove in a shopping plaza/strip mall. I looked up and I saw the pink fluorescent sign that said Shirley's. The place looked different than your average diner but regardless I was curious to see what it looked like inside. As we walked in I saw the giant EAT sign and there were mini vinyl decorations along the wall. Those were pretty cool. As the waitress took us to our seats, I was amazed by the awesome vintage inspired decorations. On the menu there was a photo of Shirley (I'm guessing) from back in the day. The servers and waitresses were really nice and very attentive. The food was great. Their chocolate chip pancakes were bomb! My boyfriend said that he has tried their chicken Fried steak for lunch which he def. recommends. All in all it was a great time! Check it out! read more
