This is a very nice hardware store, my mom always found them helpful too, but I don't get here often because it's on the other end of town and I have the other town hard ware store right down the street. But I had some errands nearby and took a walk over. Staff were very nice, I asked two/2 different people for help and they brought me over to where I need to look. No pressure, cashier was fast and friendly. Nice variety of merchandise. They are located at a busy intersection, and there is a town parking lot across the street and over a bit, but it's for all the merchants and fills up because of all the nearby restaurants. I have frequented this hardware store a few times. Each time the staff were more than helpful. Not to mention extremely knowledgeable. If you have any questions or hardware needs I would highly suggest asking the staff here. As for the location, not much parking a few street spots only. This business is your old-school hardware store. They're absolutely great! I've surprisingly been in there twice considering I don't live in the area, but my friend lives across the street. Both times that I've been there I was pleasantly greeted the moment I walked in the door and was asked how they could assist me. I've always been in and out within minutes because their staff is so pleasant and helpful. It's great to support a mom-and-pop business like this. read more

Yesterday morning I woke up to find that I had left the interior light in my car on overnight... stupid is as stupid does right? My wife got home from her overnight shift and I went to jump start my car to find that my jumper cables were locked in my trunk which no longer opens with the key and couldn`t be opened from the inside with a dead battery. I then headed on down to see the friendly people at the Shirley hardware store. I had shopped there last summer and figured they were closer then the nearest autoparts or box store. I prefer supporting local business anyway! I arrived waited a few minutes for them to open at 8 a.m. and they got there early! I asked where the cables were and the nice man actually walked me to the aisle where they were kept. I returned home hooked the cables to my wife`s running car and then to my dead car. Here I would like to say that I have been in the Boston cab business since mid 1998 and being no stranger to dumb drivers or old cars have personally jumped at least 50 vehicles in my lifetime. Usually when you hook live cables to a dead car you hear the dead car`s electrical system dance to life.. and the live car begin to drain power. I did not hear any of this. I attempted to readjust the cables at both ends trying different ground points etc. still nothing. I then did what is never supposed to be done ever. With one side of the cables hooked to the live car I touched the negative and positive ends on the other side together to see if it made a spark. NOTHING. I tried this 4 or 5 more times jiggleing the cables and attempting to readjust the live end of the cables and didnt get anything out of the other end. At this point I figured I had bought a pair of cables that somehow already had a short in them probably due to a mishap wherever they were made. I removed the cables and inspected them from end to end looking for any splits in the wire prayed connections etc. Finding nothing I reattached the cables and tried again to make them spark. Still nothing! At this point I was having a horrible day and headed back down to Shirley hardware to see if they would swap them out for another set. I entered explained my situation to a man I recognized as the owner and he quickly said " there can`t be anything wrong with the cables" frowning I said " o.k. but I can`t get anything out of them" he then in a hurried frustrated demeanor grabbed a small digital circuit tester and hooked the ground to one end of the cable and the tester to the other and "tested" each line of the cables. I would like to note that he held the digital readout away from me. He went on to repeat several times that " the cables were fine and I must have another problem" I then said "o.k. buddy thanks alot" and went to leave. On the way out the door I stopped and quietly asked the cashier if she knew of another hardware store in town and she referred me to the Ace hardware on the way out of Winthrop into East Boston. The owner overheard my question and began to call for me and follow me out of the store. I admit I was now extremely frustrated with the luck I was having and was no longer in any mood to discuss this matter with him so I kept walking. As I entered my vehicle parked out front he emerged from the store and said " you really think its the cables whata you want me to do pal do you wanna borrow my cables? " I said no thanx man i`ll just go somewhere else and buy them again" I`m funny like that I won`t beg people to do whats right I just take the hit and move on. At this point the man said " You are a [censored] asshole" This was as I was about to drive away so I stopped put the car in park and said " what [censored]?" come here and say it! he responded by saying "[censored] you asshole" and returning into the store. I then heard my mothers voice in the back of my head explaining that I would know I was a grown up when I learned to put my hands in my pockets and walk away. So off I went to the towns other hardware sore. This was now rush hour traffic and with only 2 roads in and out of the town it took me 20 minutes to get to the other store. Upon arrival I purchased another set of cables at HALF THE PRICE. I then returned to my house hooked up the cables immediately heard the dead car dance to life let the battery charge 10 minutes and started the car. I guess it was the cables then huh ? If the owner is reading this I want to ask.. what the hell is a matter with you bud? Did you think I was trying to cheat you out of the money for the cables? Why would you follow me out of the store screaming profanities at me ? Later on this same day I stopped into a chain Auto parts store to pick up washer fluid that I noted was low after having spent most of the morning under my hood and checked up on the price of their cables. $8.49+tax almost 2 bucks cheaper then the second pair I bought and almost 12 bucks cheaper then the first. read more

Shirley Hardware is a conveniently located neighborhood store staffed with incredibly knowledgable and friendly people. I'd first like to mention that I am NOT a townie. I'm from Michigan and I don't have 50 relatives living here nor do I have any family ties to any person in this establishment that would grant me Winthrop rights to receive special treatment. (Yes, that does happen in small towns!) And despite that, they have treated me very well since my first visit 7 years ago when I moved to Winthrop. The owner/manager, Dennis, has a vast amount of wisdom and knowledge he is kindly willing to share. He has fabricated things for my home, helped me trouble shoot various household problems and brainstorm updates and remodel projects. I can't possibly list all the help and education I have acquired by our occasional meetings. On top of that, I recently began jewelry making had had some hardware questions relating to it. To my surprise, one of the ladies at the front desk, Evalie, makes the most beautiful earrings and necklaces. She was able to answer all of my questions and teach me a few "tricks of the trade". And if that isn't enough, there's more! My inspiration for writing this review and sharing Shirley Hardware with the people of Yelp. I recently took up cake decorating. (Yes my hobbies are abundant and I still haven't been able to stump the Shirley Hardware staff with all of my crazy questions, half of which don't even pertain to hardware!) My kitchen is currently under construction and the surface I used for my fondant has been removed. This past week I had 2 days to make a cake for a birthday party but no smooth surface to make it on and that is imperative when working with fondant! So I called Shirley and spoke with Dennis. I told him I needed a a sheet of plexiglass. 3'x3' ran about $36 and he said to come down and pick it up when I could. Well, me being the wonderfully talkative mid-westerner I am, went on to tell him about my dilemma. He said he'd check to see if he had a some end pieces of formica I could use instead. It would be smooth, easy to clean and durable enough for my cookie and pizza cutters. When I got to the store Dennis was unavailable. Evalie helped me and pulled out of the back room a 3'x4' piece of Formica. She handed it to me and said, "No charge, and Dennis even cleaned it up and rounded the corners for you so you wouldn't get poked." It's perfect! It's huge and makes rolling out a 2'x2' fondant square a breeze! And he saved me $36! It was so generous and helpful not to mention the use I'll get out of this. It's kindness like this that makes a business great. I don't ever expect a deal or things for free, but I appreciate when people do it for no reason other than to help you out. That's why Shirley Hardware will always get my business first. This isn't the first, second or third time Dennis has saved the day and saved me money! Shirley Hardware is everything a hardware store could be. Everyone is always nice and helpful when I go in there. Today, I had been walking my dog and remembered that I needed a tarp. Instead of going home and dropping my dog off then coming all the way back I went to see if they would let me in with her. Not only did they let me in, she went to get the tarp for me while I talked to the other woman in the store. Great employees and good stock. read more
