Super helpful finding a solution to a problem fastener. He identified what I needed and found a workable solution ... All for a super value!

The guys who work here are awesome. They're friendly and helpful without being pushing. This is a go to place for me.

These guys saved me money and time. I am not experienced at home repair, but I thought I could change the fill lever on my toilet and avoid paying a handyman or plumber tons of money. The guy at Modern Hardware found the piece I needed immediately and then gave me a few pointers that probably saved me an hour of work. I made the fix exactly like he recommended. They were friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I'll be back. read more

Best around hands down , very good Service at a reasonable price. Need something and 9 out of 10 times they have it . I grew up outside of Haines Sq and have been going there since the 70's and before that father went there in the 6os. Late owner George was top Shelf . read more

Went to two Home Depots and called an Ace Hardware looking for something that they didn't have. Saw this store on the way home and pulled over to give it a shot. They sorted me out in about 2 minutes. Now I know what order to do my hardware shopping in. read more

It's been the best place to get help for decades and where else can you walk in and say, 'George, I need one of these thingys that when you connect it, it makes a whirrrrrr sound and does this!' Wishing George and Dave and all the best. read more

This is a great paint store!!! Good customer services, hard workers, very knowledgeable, they are just happy dudes....when ever I have question about paint they alway have the answers. I been shopping with then for the past 5 years and I would definitely recommend this guys ;) read more

George, David and staff very knowledgeable. Very helpful in many of my homeowner situations. Joe and Al great staff to complement George and David. Been going to them for over 30 years. Great community asset. read more

Highly unprofessional. Once I went in for bathroom paint and did not give me correct bathroom paint. Once asked for furniture paint and gave me paint that was outdoor paint and that it would work well. Used the paint and it was clearly not meant for furniture. Today went in for paint and every time I buy paint there it was $31-$35 however without telling me before mixing the paint the cost was $51. I told then I don't think I can afford this I thought it's $30 here. He rudely responded "well it's yours now." My dad went back to complain and his response "well he didn't ask" when why he did not tell me the price of the paint before mixing it. read more

After calling around the greater Boston area, I found Modern Hardware had the lowest prices for Benjamin Moore Regal Select Paint. They also have a great selection of paint supplies (lots of Wooster), and the staff was really friendly and helpful. read more

Took me a bit long to write this review, but it will be short and sweet. Awesome place, with great people working there. When we moved to the neighborhood, we stopped in as we were doing some small things around the house. They were so nice and helpful and even gave me a small discount to welcome me to the neighborhood! Great prices and to Garrett's point, they are the small shop hardware store that everyone wants in their neighborhood! read more

This is a great hardware store, and I am a devotee' of hardware stores! My daughter, who lives in Medford, and I (coming from out of the area to help on occasion) love this store. My daughter tends to live in old houses that constantly need help and repair. All the staff bends over backwards to help us even if the solution is a only 20 cent washer! Also, I love supporting deserving local stores! read more

I previously had a very bad experience here, but my parents stopped in recently and had a pleasant experience, so I'm updating my review accordingly. Happy to report a positive change :) read more

Been shopping here since 1997. Family owned, George is the best. Everyone provides exceptional customer service - unlike a big box store, you will be given the correct answer and sold what you need. They are the only place to shop for paint - Ben Moore has a product for every pocketbook. Don't just take my word for the paint, see how many professional painters shop there. read more

My husband went in for some sandpaper, and when I checked the bank account a few days later, I noticed a $240 charge. I called Modern to explain that it should have been a $24 charge, and the owner not only admitted his mistake and fixed it, he also remembered my husband and exactly what he'd bought. This is the kind of store I like to patronize. Family-owned; friendly, personal service; and a great selection. read more

Ideal local hardware store, great customer service and expertise, doing business as it's always been. They've always had whatever random items I've asked for, in stock - even a hard to find old key. Prices are very competitive. Had a key made, found an electrical adapter, got a tool question answered, and had paid for it all within 8 minutes of entering the door. Good luck having that experience at Home Depot. Better yet; my money stays local, and supports a small business. read more

As a local business supporter, I am compelled to rave about Modern Hardware. I can remember visiting the store with my father on Saturday mornings for one thing or another to finish or start a project. Now, a weekend warrior myself, you can find me chatting with George or Dave about paint color, cleaning supplies or tools. I frequently send clients there for advice and products. They also have a good handle on quality, local tradesmen to contact for bigger jobs. A great neighborhood hardware store that does a lot for the community. read more

Wonderful service. It is a pleasure to talk with someone working in a hardware store who knows stuff! Can't get that in a lot of the larger stores. read more

This neighborhood hardware store has a great selection of Benjamin Moore paints, and the employees are very knowledgeable and helpful. We visited them for advice about what to do about our bare lawn and got some great tips. I always prefer to go here rather than Home Depot if possible; 1) because I like to support local businesses and 2) I can walk there, saving myself the death-defying drive over to the Gateway Center. read more

This is a great painting supply shop and hardware store with great staff. I go there frequently to buy Benjamin Moore products and always get quick and friendly service. It is a place where it pays to be a loyal customer, as the owner is very kind about giving you discounts on paint samples when you buy an armful. He once gave me a discount on a replacement gallon of paint when I mistakenly ordered the wrong color (completely my mistake). I highly recommend doing business here! read more

I had a last minute, end of the day need for one more can of paint. The store in Somerville that carries Benj. Moore, and has lousy customer service and never seems to be open, failed me, and I found myself driving and calling Modern Hwr and flying down the road at 5 minutes before they closed. Dave stayed a little late to mix my paint and saved my project. It's customer service like THAT that really makes a place stand out. Thanks, Dave. read more

They are perfect. They are a little store but they have everything you need plus the absolute BEST customer service around.

I love this place! They give great advice and are friendly and locally owned. I try to go there over the HD as much as possible. ps. the Benjamin Moore Aura line works like a dream read more

great selection of just about everything - and a really helpful staff. they have some items the big retailers don't have. I asked them if they cut glass - yes, up to 3' x 4', which Lowe's and Home Depot don't have... Highly recommended. Keep local businesses going! read more

I agree with all the others that this place is exactly what you want in a local hardware store. The customer service is superior and Benjamin Moore paints are the best. Whether you're dealing with the owner directly, or any of his employees, each and every one of them treats you with the utmost respect and will do anything for you. I love supporting the locals when I can, but often times more than not local shop prices are through the roof. Modern's prices are fair, they're right down the streat, and the employees are so helpful that I'd rather go there than any place else. Congratulations on decades of a successful and great establishment :) read more

This place is by far the best business for home improvement i have worked with. They are always super helpful- once when I was desperate to find the right color yellow from my living room, but forbidden to buy any more samples, they suggested the perfect color, gave me a gallon, and told me to come back to pay for it if it was the right shade. Since then I don't buy paint or basic supplies anywhere else. You won't find more knowledgeable staff and they are great too at suggesting good local professionals for the jobs you need. I'd go here over the big box stores any day of the week. It's a wonderful place. read more

My father and I have a painting company and we use Modern Hardware at least 99.9% of the time to get out paint and supplies. George, Dave, and the rest of the staff are all hands on board and very helpful and knowledgeable about the products and new releases. It's an amazing place to get your supplies and they have awesome recommendations to anything that you need. We are very lucky to have found this place it helps us get our business going fast and easy. read more

This is my favorite hardware store in Boston. They don't have quite the selection of Tags, but they stock higher quality stuff, especially tools. They have a massive stock of random things, and I'm still not quite sure where they keep it all. That room under the stairs is amazing. I can't recommend this place highly enough. Some of the staff are clearly high school kids who don't know everything, but there is always someone who can answer my question. They will order you anything you need, and the bulk of their business does seem to be contractors, but I have never felt neglected or less important. Service is brilliant, prices are good, selection is quality and good. This is the sort of store I expect in a midwest farm town, and I was blown away to find it next to my house. read more

I have never been in this store that I didn't receive help and advice on various projects. The wallpaper selection is great with the added bonus of someone there to ask opinions. I have been using this store for years and have always been able to find everything I am looking for. The staff is very personable and I have never felt less important than the many contractors who frequently are there. This is really how a business should be run and I'm sorry to say, it's one of the few surviving customer comes first stores left. read more

I stopped in to pick up a couple of items. Ended up getting just what I was looking for. All sales people gave excellent service and my needs were taken care of promptly! Will return to the store again. Appreciate that kind of service! Thank you all !!! read more

I had to get paint to touch up my living room after some work was done. The problem is that it had been painted by a previous owner and I had no idea how to match the color exactly. They let me borrow a hand-held tool for free that I took home and it told me the exact color my living room was (Lilly White, it turns out). I came back and they made me up a pint to purchase. When I used it, it matched perfectly. I had taken cell phone pictures and had been trying to match that way. I am SO glad I used their tool instead. I had thought my room was light blue. My wife is very happy and it did not cost a lot. :-) read more

have stopped in here multiple times for keys, paint brushes, random small items. but today I went in there with the idea of trying to repurpose an old bookcase into some kind on shelving unit. the gentleman that helped me took the time to give me a few ideas and also the time to listen to my ideas and come up with a cheaper solution to achieve the plan in my head. the project is only halfway there but I feel like its going to work just fine. on the way out he was also nice enough to say hey send us a picture when you finish it. never heard anything like that at home depot. read more

Excellent store they have everything you need and the staff is great. They are knowledgable and experienced and will always give you the right advice. Also I find the prices on the Benjamin Moore paint to be cheaper them most local stores. This is the only hardware store for me!!! read more

I've been going here with my family since I was a little kid. The owners, George and David, are no-BS, sell at a good price, and are very knowledgeable about their products. I am pretty hardware-challenged, and the staff there have always taken their time to help me with my projects. Yet, their bread-and-butter seems to be hard-core construction and painting guys who trust their integrity. I will love this place even more when the remodeling is done! Forget Home Depot, this is the place to go to. read more

I find a lot of hard to find quality hardware items at Modern. Good staff with good advice and have everything you need for paints and related products at very fair pricing points.
