I rarely leave yelp reviews and have never reviewed a hardware store before. But Fells ACE Hardware is amazing and deserves five stars. It's a very compact store, but I was surprised that they had everything I needed for touching up a rental property including paint color matching. More importantly, the workers seek you out to ask if you need help finding anything, which beats exploring the vast aisles of Home Depot or Lowes any day. The owner is always happy to offer home repair advice, including (a) advising me to fix a leaky toilet by tightening a nut instead of buying a new valve from him, and (b) directing me to Lowes for a product that he did not carry (replacement radiator knob). read more

This place is simply amazing. Here's how it works -- Walk in. Stand in the middle of the (small and overly crowded) store for about 30 seconds. Someone comes over and asks you what you need. You say it. They find it - or convince you to get something CHEAPER and BETTER and then ring you up and you leave. If you want a scavenger hunt... go to Lowe's. One year they even trimmed the handle on a rake for our toddler so he could "help" with lawn care. No charge. Love it! Apple Stores get all that press for "on the floor" customer attention. Fells True Value appears to have invented that model. read more

With a 100-year-old house, I always have something that's broken or being replaced. Fell's always has someone happy to help me find the piece I need, or figure out a solution to the problem of the day. On the odd occasion when they didn't have what I need, they provided the name, address and phone number of a place that did. I used to say that the extra dime or a quarter that I give them instead of the discount house was a small cost for the service and convenience, but lately I find I spend less because I get what I need and get out. read more

If Fells Hardware doesn't have what you're looking for, they know where you can get it and don't mind sending you to a competitor - though they blanch at sending you to "Cheapo Depot" - though they will if they have to. They also have sound advice and guidance for most household projects. On top of having an incredible array of everyday and seasonal products and knowledge, Kevin, Bruce, Jay and the rest of the gang are the nicest, friendliest people you'll ever hope to meet. These guys are the best! If you need a black screw and they don't have one, they'll paint one for you. The Ryans take delight in hearing about homeowners' challenges and helping to solve them. They were voted Citizen of the Year for a good reason - they offer good old-fashioned, common sense solutions for reasonable prices. These are the friendliest, most straightforward and knowledgable hardware store guys I've dealt with in 30 years in the Boston area. It is a small "homeowner" oriented hardware store that does not really compete with the big box stores but rather caters to the weekend fixer guy in all of us. Bring them a broken part or vague description of what you need to do and they will always do their best to help and usually manage to get you sorted out. Excellent though limited service. read more

This is the quintessential mom and pop hardware. I love this place. Despite its small size, they always have whatever your need. One time I even forgot my wallet and they said don't worry about it, pay us next time. Unbelievable. Another time my incompetent painters lost one of my shutters with the hardware attached. The shutter is easy enough to replace but how was I to get a 1930's era cast gudgeon that was original to the house. Fells had the exact part. Apparently there are enough homes in Winchester with this hardware that people need these from time to time. The Home Depot would never stock such a part. Fells is acutely aware of what people need and what time of year to have it. Need driveway refelectors in the fall? All that's left at the depot are the damaged ones where the reflector is cracked. I completely agree with all the other reviews. These are the nicest and most knowledgable guys around. More than once they have explained how to fix some little thing (e.g. the spray nozzle on my sink), when i was about to buy a replacement. They also know lots of contractors - ask them who's the right person to call to install a dishwasher, rewire your circuit board, or whatever, they'll know just whom to call. And they love explaining to my 8-year-old son what all the arcane tools are for. My son and I have gone there just for fun, even when we didn't need anything! read more
