I don't know wth is going on in this office but they just called my sister in law and cancelled her ob appt and told her she needs to find a new doctor. They won't tell her what's going on and how incredibly unprofessional to just leave and not have another physician to take over your pt load. If she did retire she should have stopped taking new pts. She delivered my first baby and was about to also deliver my second until they decided to terminate her. I'm very disappointed with Adventist health network and hope they bring Dr. Chan back very soon. This was very unfair of the hospital. Five stars for Dr. Chan but absolutely zero stars for how Adventist handled and is handeling this situation. As a pregnant woman you're already stressed and nervous, finding a OBGYN that you can trust is a big thing. To just leave patients who are pregnant, some even high risk and about to give birth hanging and referring them to other doctors who FYI aren't even taking patients anymore is ridiculous. Even Dr. Harrington is on medical leave? Some of us don't have PPO plans and can't just decide to go to another hospital, we're limited to whatever medical group is available in our plan. This has been extremely disappointing, Adventist has some of the best L&D nurses, staff and rooms but the board and whoever was involved with this should all be fired read more

I love Dr. Chan. She is the most compassionate, caring, and will go above and beyond for you and your baby. She listens to my concerns, gives me information and advice that I wouldn't know to ask, prepare me for what is to come. I sought to find the best Obstetrician when becoming pregnant again. Dr. Chan's reviews stated how she was kind and passionate about what she does. My friend's son was also delivered by Dr. Chan and my friend raved about how she is such a great doctor. I've been seeing Dr. Chan since my first appointment. Every appointment she was always so excited to see me. She checked everything and made sure I felt comfortable, well informed, and focused on centered patient care. If I needed to call her for anything, she gave me an emergency line. I suffered from painful constipation and was admitted to the ER. She kept asking for updates even though it was in the middle of the night from nurses to make sure I was okay to be sent home. She told me what to do and what to take to relieve the constipation and I also wanted all natural remedies and she told me about psyllium husk. I was immediately better after taking her recommendations. I finally go to my last OB appointment. She told me how much she couldn't wait to see my baby. I come into my C-section appointment a couple of days later. They prep me and everything went well. One hour before my c-section, the hospital notified me stating that Dr. Chan's contract with them had been terminated. I was left in disbelief and shock. I began to feel panic and began to cry. I did not have time to prepare and I knew nothing about the doctor who was about to do my c-section and she did not know me either. I've put all my trust into Dr. Chan and felt comfortable and confident that she would be delivering my baby. I kept asking the staff what happened to Dr. Chan. Nobody could give me an answer. I was upset by that point. What do I do? Cancel my C-section? I was left confused and in disbelief. Almost betrayed by the hospital. I over heard someone stating that there was some licensing issues that the hospital made a mistake on, but blamed it on Dr. Chan and as a result they decided to terminate her privileges with the hospital barring her from treating her patients or speaking to them. How can a hospital do that to their patient! This has left me traumatized, depressed, and gave me PTSD. I wake up crying almost every night about this! Thank goodness my C section went well thanks to the doctor that made time to take over Dr. Chan's patients. Myself and my baby are doing well. But the trauma endured from this will stay with me. I put all my trust into Dr. Chan for them to take that away from me. Poor Dr. Chan didn't do anything wrong. This makes me so angry because they got rid of a great doctor! Great doctors like her are hard to find anywhere! read more

ARE YOU PREGNANT? Do not look elsewhere! I can't say enough great things about her and her team. Dr. Chan delivered my baby and saw me throughout my whole pregnancy. This is not my first so I have had experience with other doctors to know the difference between a bad, good and the best one in LA. Be prepared to wait a while during your checkup appointments, it's because she delivers all her patients no matter the time of day. So if it happens that your appointment gets canceled or delayed be patient, she's not taking a long lunch. She's out there delivering babies and saving lives. She cares about you and your baby. Everything she predicted during my pregnancy came to fruition. She had serious talks with me to prepare myself to deliver early since my baby was growing faster than anticipated and probably was going to come around the 38 wk mark (Guess what happened) she told me to make changes to my nutrition and lifestyle that were very helpful to be able to birth my baby without ripping (most doctors refrain from giving any advice). She had me do a "controlled natural birth" and not just push like crazy. He was born after 4 pushes. The ladies at the front desk were amazing. So helpful. Brittany helped me change insurance so I could continue my care with Dr. Chan, Tracy was so sweet and caring too and called me many times to check on my contractions. During birth I was treated like a queen. You are told to call her when you are on the way to the hospital. She was waiting for me when I arrived at the hospital with the BEST team to see me firsthand. Unfortunately, I don't remember the names of the wonderful ladies that helped me when I was in active labor. But all I can say is I was treated with care, respect and even felt like I was with family. The anesthesiologist was amazing and so sweet, the nurses were just the best. I fully trusted them. And Dr. Chan was always coming back to check on my progress. I consider myself so lucky to have had my baby delivered by her and her team. All the doctors should be more like her. THANK YOU Dr. Chan! Love Dr. Chan, but she really needs an upgrade in her front desk staff. I always leave the phone calls so angry. One of the staff literally laughed at my request for another day when they couldn't accommodate my schedule after THEY had to change it, all because I wanted my husband to be there with me. My choices were limited, and I was going to change to another doctor but chose to see Dr. Chan for at least one visit. Her kindness is what made me stay, but her front staff will be the death of me. Even when in person, they hide behind the monitors even though they see people needing help, and the same person gave another patient attitude when she mentioned that the sanitizer was empty, all because she was playing on her cell phone. If you aren't going to be a good worker, at least be a kind one. read more

I'll also add, in addition to my last review, that I have since received an $800 bill from the genetic testing company she recommended to use for the miscarriage embryo. She told me it would cost $100 and that it's inexpensive and worth it. WELL, apparently it's not inexpensive and it didn't tell us anything so we're still getting screwed over by this woman. read more

Dr. Chan is amazing. I had 3 pregnancies and 2 births with her and all I can say is she makes having babies a lot of fun all while taking care of you immensely! I had a molar pregnancy as well and she went from fun loving to super serious to make sure I get the care I needed. She explains things and allows you to ask her questions and give you easy to understand reason's/explanations. I love her! My only complaint is her receptionist team suck really bad, they say they're going to call you and never do. I wish they were just as mindful as she is. read more

Dr. Chan delivered both of my boys. My first had complications, he came early, but she delivered him perfectly. So, without a doubt, I wanted her to deliver my second. I absolutely trust her with both my life and my babies life in her hands. A friend recommended me to her, who delivered her kids and I have since recommended her to my other friends and she delivered their's. She is very knowledgeable and experienced. She listens, she is sweet, funny, and also gets down to business when you need her to take care of you and your pregnancy. The RNs and her staff are amazing as well. I too had difficulty to getting an appointment with her in the beginning, but that is because she has many patients that want to be under her care. I've seen Dr Chan for 3 prenatal visits, and in years past as a general obgyn. She's very smart, no-nonsense, and I like her. It's never been a crazy long wait to see her, just normal. BUT some things I would watch out for: (TLDR double check 3rd party scan appointments, testing and billing) - A couple of visits and tests were was billed as a general visits instead of prenatal, which meant I had a much bigger bill from insurance. This according to my insurance company when I called to ask. My insurance even re-categorized a pending authorization over the phone! - I got a Natera test, I asked Dr Chan for 'no sex on the test'. I also mentioned to the staff 'no sex on the test' -- I believe if I hadn't mentioned it to the staff separately, they would simply have left it on the test. The difference would have been a phone message including male/female vs not. I definitely use the internet and logged in to see the results. This would have been a spoiler. - They provided a copy of my records -- they're scanned paper files, hard to read, not all pages are dated. I know this is kinda standard. But I do appreciate it when offices use digital. - They do ultrasound (unless you ask not to) at every visit. This may not be covered by your insurance for prenatal care. You may love it! You may not want to be billed for it! Just something to know. - She's used to high risk pregnancies and continuous monitoring (which limits your movement) at the hospital she works with. The hospital does have a couple of wireless monitors, but they are often broken. - I asked not to do a particular test off-site -- they made an appointment anyways, didn't tell me about it, and then I only found out about it when the medical center called in a panic needing to re-schedule 2 days before. - I asked to do a particular test (20 week scan). Dr Chan said they'd book the appointment. At 18 weeks, I called the office to follow up. They hadn't made the appointment and I wasn't able to get in until 23 weeks. At this point I was transferring care, but still, I did expect them to follow through on the appointment as discussed during my checkup. - She gave a pamphlet dump for testing that was confusing. The internet was more helpful here. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Chan for nearly 20 years (since before she had her own practice). She is a sweet and caring person, she's thoughtful, and she's an amazing doctor. For years Dr. Chan kept telling me she wanted to deliver my baby but I just wasn't ready at that time. But I faithful went to see her every year for my well woman exams. Then I moved to the west side and decided to try a different doctor. Wouldn't you know it, that's when I got pregnant. Even though I was referred to the other doctor by a friend, I just didn't feel as comfortable, cared for, or happy seeing her. So, for my second pre-natal exam I went back to Dr. Chan. I'm so glad I did. She delivered my son a year ago. Even though I had a relatively easy pregnancy I'm glad I went back to her. After going through that delivery with her I know I made the right decision. She wanted me to have a natural delivery and she did everything possible to make that happen and it did. She made me feel comfortable. She even came to visit the next day just to see the baby - and it was Saturday and she was supposed to have the day off. She is my OB/GYN for life. As long as she continues to practice I will be her patient. read more

I absolutely LOVE and recommend Dr. Shirley Chan. She delivered my daughter, Mya three years ago and the experience was amazing! I was "at-risk" throughout my pregnancy and she was wonderful in making me feel at ease through out process. Whenever I had a question or concern, she had no problem explaining everything to where I understood and felt comfortable. Not to mention, I love her spunkiness! I always enjoyed visiting her office. Her office had me jump through hoops for 2 weeks trying to get approvals before telling me they don't accept patients after 12 weeks of pregnancy. I guess the one I spoke to didn't know this rule?? Maybe get your staff on the same page so you don't put pregnant women in a tough situation where they are stuck without an ob. read more

We absolutely love Dr. Chan and her entire staff. Being new parents, we would be nervous for every appointment and had lots of questions prepared to better understand how the baby was developing and what to expect for each stage of my pregnancy. From the moment we walked into the office however, we'd be put at ease. The front desk staff was always friendly, Patty was always chipper and had a genuine interest in how I was feeling and doing, and Dr. Chan always showed up with a warm smile and contagious laugh. Dr. Chan was patient in explaining what was happening, what to expect for just the next stage (to not overwhelm us), and answered our questions before we could even ask. As the final weeks of my pregnancy approached, I became anxious as I just wanted the baby to arrive! After going a week past my due date, we scheduled an induction with Dr. Chan's guidance. Once I was settled in, Dr. Chan came to check on me and planned to come back in the morning to see how I was progressing. The induction took very quickly however and I was ready to deliver by early morning (in less than 12 hours!!). Dr. Chan came quickly and we delivered our happy, healthy baby naturally! The staff at Glendale Adventist Hospital was outstanding (Dr. Chan only delivers here); we truly can't express how grateful we were to have delivered here with Dr. Chan. The staff took exceptional care of us and taught us more than we could have ever imagined in the short 48 hours of being there. We constantly felt at ease and thoroughly enjoyed every moment! After seeing a staff as frequently as you do during your pregnancy, you know its been a great experience when you actually miss seeing them after you finally give birth! We look forward to the next time we are pregnant and can go through the experience again with Dr. Chan, her staff, and Glendale Adventist. read more

After multiple days of calling to try and make an appointment (the first time I called it was around 4pm - they close at 5pm - and the office had already automated the phone with an out of office/after hours message. And perhaps i've just had black luck, but the following two days that I tried to get through calling at earlier times in the day, I could only reach a busy signal), I finally got through, only to learn that both doctors are separately not available until February and May of next year for any appointments, let alone new patients. Very disappointing and a bit shocking. Wish that information was available online or in their message machine to some extent, so people don't have to waste so much time trying to get through. Waiting up to 8 months for an appointment is pretty absurd. read more

I delivered my baby a few weeks ago and Dr Chan was very attentive and followed up with me closely even when I was in the hospital she would make sure to check up on me even at 2 or 3am when I was induced bc I was past my due day. Dr. Chan is just an amazing person inside and out. When you find a doctor as dedicated as she is, hold on to her! I've been seeing her for the past 6 years and from the very beginning she has been so pleasant and always made me feel comfortable. She let me know what we were going to do for each appointment as soon as she came into the door. She takes her time and does not rush at all. I recently learned that I am pregnant and was comfortable knowing me and my baby would be in good hands. Unfortunately, my insurance changed and I can no longer see her (I am so regretful & heartbroken. I shouldn't have changed my insurance, ugh!!). But she has done an amazing job being my OB all these years and guiding me through the first trimester of my pregnancy. Her staff and everybody in the office is so nice & sweet. There is sometimes a bit of a wait, but please do not let this discourage you from continuing to see her because she will treat you with compassion and genuine care. Dr. Chan has been the biggest blessing in the delivery of my healthy baby girl. I had the smoothest first pregnancy and delivery, due in large part to Dr Chan and her wonderful staff. She is so knowledgeable about everything and anything an expecting mother could wonder about. But beyond being a true expert, she's compassionate and a fellow mother so she understands pregnancy and motherhood first hand. Her bedside manner is superb and her straightforward but caring nature is what set her apart from the first OB I saw before switching to Dr Chan. I felt confident in the her and trusted the high caliber of care I was receiving every step of the way. My c section incision is so skillfully made that there's already no visible scar. I wanted to update my review after my delivery and have to say that my thoughts and experience with Dr. Chan has not changed one bit. My delivery went very smoothly and Dr. Chan was there every step of the way- unlike other OBGYNS that arrive once the baby's head is out. Once the nurses admitted me to a room Dr. Chan arrived in about 30-40 minutes and checked up on me constantly to see how I was and my progress in terms of dilation. She made me feel SO calm to the point where I even took a nap (my mom still thinks im crazy for doing that). Just called her office and although she is one of the few GYN's covered in my medical group, I'm told she's only seeing new patients "In Pregnancy". "So, nothing for regular wellness care?" Receptionist just says, "No." Never mind if I might be TRYING to GET PREGNANT, which is why I might be needing a visit in the first place!!! Guess you can't charge the insurance company as much for those visits as you can for pre-natal care, so why bother. Shame on you. read more

Dr Chan and her staff are excellent health care providers and are wonderfully supportive at an emotional level. You occasionally need to wait past your appointment time but that is because Dr Chan personally supports all her patients through unexpected needs and/or emergencies. Let's face it, no one likes getting a Pap smear, but Dr. Chan made it extremely comfortable. Best Pap smear I've gotten, if there is such a thing! Also, I was a new patient and was in and out of her office in less than an hour, including time for filling out new patient forms. Fast, efficient, friendly doctor with awesome bedside manners! Dr Chan delivered my first son in 2009 and will be delivering my second son in July of this year. I will never see another OB! I had to change insurance companies since my last pregnancy and I made sure she took my new potential insurance before applying for it. She is incredibly respectful of your wishes (natural or not) and isn't "quick to cut" unless it's an emergency or medically required. Her bedside & office visit manners are great, not to mention she's absolutely adorable! Her nurses and office staff are all very sweet and helpful. Dr Shirley Chan is 5 stars OB GYN, there is no question about that. That 1 star is for the way whoever needs to answer the phone. All day today, I tried calling the office to clarify my appointment time but everytime when my phone automatic redial, it's the same busy signal. It finally rang at 1130am which was connected to the answering message that may direct you to answering service because they are out to lunch. I swear, the phone was just left off the hook all morning. I patiently keep calling and same busy signal all the time. They should do a better job about that answering a phone call duty. I am so sure Dr Chan is not aware of what the front office or back office people do to the phone. This was not the first time it happened. This rating is for them to improve in that area. I really like Dr Chan but something has to be done about this issue. read more
