ARE YOU PREGNANT? Do not look elsewhere! I can't say enough great things about her and her team. Dr. Chan delivered my baby and saw me throughout my whole pregnancy. This is not my first so I have had experience with other doctors to know the difference between a bad, good and the best one in LA. Be prepared to wait a while during your checkup appointments, it's because she delivers all her patients no matter the time of day. So if it happens that your appointment gets canceled or delayed be patient, she's not taking a long lunch. She's out there delivering babies and saving lives. She cares about you and your baby. Everything she predicted during my pregnancy came to fruition. She had serious talks with me to prepare myself to deliver early since my baby was growing faster than anticipated and probably was going to come around the 38 wk mark (Guess what happened) she told me to make changes to my nutrition and lifestyle that were very helpful to be able to birth my baby without ripping (most doctors refrain from giving any advice). She had me do a "controlled natural birth" and not just push like crazy. He was born after 4 pushes. The ladies at the front desk were amazing. So helpful. Brittany helped me change insurance so I could continue my care with Dr. Chan, Tracy was so sweet and caring too and called me many times to check on my contractions. During birth I was treated like a queen. You are told to call her when you are on the way to the hospital. She was waiting for me when I arrived at the hospital with the BEST team to see me firsthand. Unfortunately, I don't remember the names of the wonderful ladies that helped me when I was in active labor. But all I can say is I was treated with care, respect and even felt like I was with family. The anesthesiologist was amazing and so sweet, the nurses were just the best. I fully trusted them. And Dr. Chan was always coming back to check on my progress. I consider myself so lucky to have had my baby delivered by her and her team. All the doctors should be more like her. THANK YOU Dr. Chan! We are forever grateful for you!

Ask the Community - Shirley Chan, MD

Is there a different number to call? I have called over 10 times in the past two weeks and have not been able to get through or get a call back.

I am having the same issue! I call everyday at different times and am getting the recording that says office is closed. No option to leave a message or anything... what is going on? I am suppose to be a new patient and now am concerned this will be…

Everytime I call the office the recording is on that says the office is closed even though I am calling during their business hours. Is this a common issue with the office?

    Same problem!! It's maddening!

I've been dealing with hormonal imbalance for the past four months. I'm currently with Kaiser and have seen nine different doctors, most of whom suggested anti-anxiety or antidepressant medication. However, I knew something deeper was going on. What I initially thought were panic attacks at night turned out to be hot flashes. I often felt dismissed and unheard, which was incredibly frustrating. My wife helped me research other options, and that's when we found Thrive. After reading so many positive reviews, I felt hopeful that I had finally found a place where I would be seen and heard. My first visit with the doctor was positive. She listened to my concerns and ordered bloodwork. However, after completing my labs, I had difficulty getting a follow-up appointment. My calls were not returned, and I eventually had to use the emergency text number just to get a response. I was told I had a phone appointment scheduled at 11 AM, but I never received a call. When I followed up, they offered me an in-person appointment later that day, which I accepted. During that visit, the doctor reviewed my labs and told me a pharmacist would contact me the next day to start testosterone treatment. Unfortunately, I never received that call. I want to be clear that I'm not trying to be difficult, but dealing with hormonal issues has significantly impacted my quality of life. I've been experiencing sleepless nights, restlessness, irritability, bladder issues, and an overall sense that I'm not functioning at my best. Given that this is an out-of-pocket service, the lack of communication has been extremely frustrating. I've since called and emailed multiple times without any response. Additionally, when you call their office, it goes straight to a generic voicemail that doesn't clearly identify the business, and messages are not returned. It feels like you have to constantly follow up just to get basic communication and even then, responses are inconsistent. I also want to add that I typically don't write reviews like this. However, if you are struggling the way I have been, I wouldn't want another woman to go through what I've experienced. I truly believe women should support one another and take each other's concerns seriously, and unfortunately, that has not been my experience here.

To start off, I have social anxiety & im often not able to explain or elaborate as eloquently as I'd like. My mind often goes blank when speaking to someone. As such, I very often leave appointments regretting how much I 'didn't' say bc I was too focused on breathing normal and not getting nervous. Because of this, a lot of doctors don't think I'm in excruciating pain, or it's not as severe since I'm not begging for help or showing much of any emotion. But trust me, my pain is excruciating..... I just struggle to explain it or show emotion to strangers. During my appt he asked all my symptoms.. I didn't get to fully emphasize the debilitating cramps / pain I experience every month (due to my inability to communicate eloquently). But that didn't matter with Dr welebir because All I had to say was "yes I feel pain" for him to take me serious without me having to over explain myself. For that, I'm very thankful. Since I do struggle to explain my symptoms and what I feel; I rarely leave appointments feeling confident that a doctor understood or believes me.. but today I did, even without over explaining myself. On top of that, I can't even begin to explain how detailed he is with explaining various symptoms & the full break down that other doctors fail to do. Why ask me to call the nurse and see if they say yes to then ask for someone else? Where is the sympathy of this hospital? I feel if you're 10+ you should be able to see your dad there. The security stepped in and said "well what if he's sick and brings it to all the patients" like what if I'm sick too? You're letting me in? Is he not going to carry anything if he's 14? The age policy needs to change to at least 12! A 12 year old knows about their dad not being home and are well aware why! The girl Miranda at the front desk had attitude too! My husband walked down because they can't stop him to see his son. But we don't get why the security is there following him. If I go back tomorrow and say he's 14 they said they would let him in. When I did not receive a confirmation or reminder I reached out to the office by phone and email multiple times and no one responded to my emails or voicemails. I did not want to take time off of work for an appointment that wasn't confirmed and when I finally got someone on the phone I could practically feel her rolling her eyes at me as she told me they only confirm the day before.
