Everyday I go get donuts across the street at KC donuts! I usually go there because of the massive line always at shipleys. Today KC was closed and I had no choice but to go to shipleys. First of all, the service from the workers was very awesome! Very sweet tone of voice and laughter from all employees. although they were nice I must say....... shipleys donuts it's TRASH. The kolaches we had were ballpark melted cheese with by far the worst tasting sausage I have ever eaten. so bad that I threw it away after one bite and didn't look back!!!! I don't understand the hype at all. KC DONUTS is across the street and I suggest anyone who actually likes classic authentic donuts should visit there instead. I had lunch at the wonderful restaurant Evangeline's down the street and stopped in the donut shop there to get some kolaches but they were out. I had to turn right on Brodie Lane because of the median and when I got to the first light to make a U-turn law and behold there was Shipley's Donuts so I pulled in there instead. As long as I was there I popped into the Quilters Folly and fortunately they mentioned that Shipley's closed at 4. It was 10 till 4 so I hustled over there and the guy gave me a great deal on four kolaches to go. He was very nice and the kolaches were very good. read more

Vile, nasty, greasy, heavy donuts that must raise your cholesterol at least 10 points a serving. The icings are really cheap and full of food dye. Don't buy more than you can eat right away, because if you look at the box the next morning, you'll swear someone changed your car's oil in there. I have to say I waited too long to park and too long in line for this junk. Closer than Krispy Kreme, but not worth the gas you save. I so love Shipley's since it's a bit of my childhood. I came in hoping for the glazed donut with flaky sugar and a twist. The place was clean and service was really courteous and fast, but the glazed wasn't what I remembered it to be (new recipe?). It fulfilled the fix I needed but was as little disappointed that it wasn't the warm soft pillowy flaky sugar awesomeness I wanted. Cake donuts. It's all about the cake donuts. Sure, they look like a giant puckered sphincter... but hey, they're delicious. The inside is moist and soft, as opposed to most cake donuts which are dried out and boring. I've only had the plain cake, but really, that's all you need here. Glazed donuts are pretty standard. Maybe it's me, but it's hard to get excited about glazed donuts now. They are alright... They've got a bunch of variants (sprinkles, nuts, coconut shavings), but I didn't try any of those. The kolaches kinda freak me out. The sausage has a grittiness to it that just makes my skin crawl... I avoid these like a 9-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. I'm glad I don't live anywhere near here, otherwise it would be a one-way ticket on the fatty express heading non-stop to plumpsville. read more

This place is as good as it gets! Been a fan of Shipleys for a long time and will admit that I sometimes take the long route just to swing by here. Their kolaches are the best. Recently tried the new ones with egg and cheese added, who knew you could add to perfection? Glazed, cherry filled, cinnamon or just plain cake, they never disappoint. Shipley Donuts is becoming something of a weekend ritual for my family, as it's fun to pop in for a donut or two on a Saturday morning. The place is always hopping at that time, which can make for some longish wait times. The staff is friendly and pretty quick, however, and if they're making donuts it's an extra treat to while away the line. The drive-thru line gets nuts at times and can be very slow, I suggest going inside rather than sitting in your car. It's a much more enjoyable experience. As far as food quality, most of the donuts are pretty good. The iced have just the right amount of frosting, although the creme-filled can be a little overstuffed for our tastes. The cake donuts are good, maybe a little dry and pretty dense... don't expect to eat a lot of them. The kolaches are pretty subpar, tasting more like dinner roles with sausage than real kolaches. I've tried them twice and given up on them, but as Shipley is primarily donuts I'm not going to ding them too hard for that. read more

I grew up on Shipley's donuts. There was one right down the street from our house..and every Saturday (well, almost every). I was treated to a cinnamon twist (ooooh so good) and chocolate milk. This was in the prehistoric days before the world of yelp of course. Fast forward to 2011, and I find myself living (yet again) near a Shipley's Donuts. I had not tried Shipley's in years. After moving South, River City Donuts became my go to. So, one morning after a few too many cocktails (ssh, don't judge), I ventured to Shipley's. I got my usual cinnamon twist, a coffee and a jalapeno kolache. MMM MMM good. The cinnamon twist was warm and delicious, as it should be. It wasn't over cooked (as they can be). The jalapeno kolache was also tasty. It's a kolache filled with sausage, cheese and a slice of a jalapeno. If you like a bit of heat, then this one is for you. I went back a few days ago and tried their new bacon, egg and cheese kolache. I wasn't a fan. Stick to the basic ones, they are tasty. The bacon wasn't crispy, it was terribly gooey (I'm a big crispy fan so I could be alone on this). There also wasn't much egg or cheese in the kolache to warrant the $2. The entire time I was eating it I kept wishing I'd ordered the jalapeno. Aside from the one kolache experience, this place is great. So wow, this morning, between 10-11, was apparently when everyone and their dog (my woofies were with me too) decided to go here. I easily waited a half an hour in the drive through line. I had the dogs and did not want to leave them in the car or else I would have gone in. An awesome man was walking around taking orders. I only needed a total of three items. Why was everyone who was ahead of me ordering literally boxes of food and why are in they doing this in the drive through? Really? Then, when I made my order, I got all the way up to the front for them to tell me they were out of what I ordered (ham and cheese kolaches). They also told me it would take even longer to cook more of them (and the girl seemed so put out even though I was who had waited so long) which it didn't end up taking long at all. Magically, a different person proceeded to put them in the bag because apparently they had literally just gotten cooked. It was so unorganized and I could feel the lack of communication in the air.....ugh. By the time I got them home, they were so extremely hot that they burned through both a paper and plastic bag, and this was just not a good time. It's going to be awhile before I can go back. I know I only spent under 5 bucks but come on...I waited all that time for pretty much nothing. I give the stars to the guy that had to stand out there and take all the orders. He said it had been packed all day. I understand busy places, but the people hogging the drive through with their huge orders and even more huge SUV's should really go inside and let those of us that need under 3 things go through the drive through. Every time I go to this Shipleys, they mess up my order. Mostly, it's an unglazed donut that I asked to be glazed, and I can deal with it. But today, I asked for an apple juice, and when I got my order, she didn't hand me my apple juice, so I asked her for it. She looked at me with a face that made me look like I was the dumb one, and she said "Well I didn't charge you for one..." even though I had asked for one? So I responded and said "ok i guess don't worry about it..." and she said "have a great day!" Just to find out that she also didn't give me creamer for my coffee. My fiance and I are on a mission to try every donut shop in Austin. Every Sunday, we wake up and eat a nutritious breakfast of some sort (chicken sausage and scrambled egg whites was this morning's) and then we find a donut shop and order 1 glazed donut (me), 1 cake donut(him), and 1 speciality donut that we split. This morning's outing took us to Shipley's. I had tried Shipley's once before in the Houston airport in a moment of sugary weakness. Got there about 10:45am and it was not at all crowded, so we ordered 1 glazed, 1 plain cake, 1 iced maple, and then since the cake donuts here are much smaller than the glazed, we also got a cinnamon sugar donut. I do not like cake donuts, but the fiance said they were some of the best he's ever had. He might have just been exaggerating since the cake donut he had on last week's adventure was lacking. The glazed donut was perfectly warm and mouth-melty and it had a good texture. The iced maple was equally delicious. I didn't care for the piece of cinnamon sugar donut that I tried, but I also didn't order it - he did. We got 2 cups of coffee that were mediocre. Would be nice to have the non-big-chain donut shops to step up their coffee game a bit. Service was great and fast. I think if I worked at a donut shop, I would want to kill everyone because I probably had to wake up at the butt crack of dawn to start making donuts for the people like me that just woke up around 10am and leisurely strolled in to gluttonize on sugar. I love the friendly staff and they even let you call ahead for orders, They have a dizzying selection of confections with holes, twists and all manner of sweets inserted into these lightly fried pastries. Today I go and the lady scrapes half the frosting off the donuts with the edge of the box now you think she would throw them away instead of trying to serve them to a customer, but she continued to put them in my box. No bags to carry the box of donuts in which should have been noticed yesterday before closing.they don't use gloves to put the frosting on the donuts, this is my last time going. so disappointe. read more

Shipley's is an institution in Houston. Back in the days of yore it was one of those neighborhood joints that you knew was open at midnight. I used to love going in and seeing the "donut factory" in the back. This location has to be a franchise, so it just doesn't have the same ambiance. The staff is young (and low hourly, I am sure), so they don't really seem to give a crap. The seating area is a bit cramped and hard to keep clean....It doesn't have the open, airy, florescent lit feel of the Houston institution with the cheery old dude in a paper hat hamming it up and making you late. The location restricts them a lot....If they could get a semi-open patio location, they would make a killing in this area of town. There are a lot of former-Houstonians that want this place to be what we grew up with. Nostalgia aside, the quality of the food is superb. I love the Shipley's recipe and the kolaches are just awesome. This location seems to have a larger selection of kolaches than I remember, a good plus for this area. The drive thru line can seem like a big commitment if you are grabbing and going in the morning, but it is okay for you to be late if you are the guy who brought Shipley's. read more

My family showed up 10 minutes before they closed and a young lady opened the service window and said, "we're closed." I said, "but it's not 2:00 yet" and again she said, "we're closed" and slammed the window. My husband spotted another donut store across the street called KC and not only were they pleasant, the donuts were delicious! This is coming from someone who grew up in Houston and patronized Shipley often. Shipley was apart of our family traditions and holiday celebrations. I refuse to support this location. I've been to this Shipley's a couple times now and like always the food always exceeds my expectations. Those damn kolaches are heaven sent! But that is not why I'm writing this review...numerous times I've seen this young bright eyed lad working behind the counter that's looks like it has been his dream to work at a donut shop. On this occasion I saw him deal with a rather rude customer and never once did I see his professionalism faulter. I saw him deal with the customer and make him leave in not such a shitty mood. Next I was up and I started to chat with the young lad and was impressed by his ability to articulate himself so well. But then I found out he was only a measly employee! Not even an assistant manager!! I was mildly outraged by this but those damn kolaches distracted me. I believe the young mans name was Edward and he deserves a raise as soon as possible. Regardless I will definitely be returning and hope to fine that Shipley's has treated Edward right. read more
