What happened to the chocolate iced peanut donuts? They used to be covered in thick sweet chocolate icing and topped with salted peanuts. I bought a dozen at a time. Now they have no flavor and barely any sweetness. What a shame. read more

Okay, so we finally stopped by to try this place out. You know that emoji where the face has a straight line for their mouth? Well this is how we felt. We asked if they had any kolaches and they said that they could not serve them past 3:00 due to the state inspectors. Then she mumbled something about how they were so difficult and wouldn't allow them to serve them all day. Okay, so the truth here is that hold time for foods is 2 hours when hot food is involved. So they were basically making these kolaches I guess one in the mornings and kept them in a warmer ALL DAY. Hence the face. Who wants meat wrapped in bread that has sat in a warmer all day long? Like those sad dried up hot dogs in a gas station. So thanks for saving me from an upset stomach. We ordered a few different doughnuts and they were good- nothing spectacular, just like the ones that you would get in the case in a grocery store. They raved about how amazing and melt in your mouth their sugar doughnuts are...and they weren't. Again, after being born and raised in the state where that famous "hot doughnuts now" was invented and after trying Heavenly Doughnuts, this place just didn't throw my toes in the air. Don't get me wrong. The donuts are good. But if I come here, I HAVE to get the kolaches. My favorites are the ham & cheese and the buffalo chicken. The inside of the store is a little crowded, as is the parking lot, but it's worth the conditions. The apple fritters are some of the best in the nation!! They're big, full of flavor and priced well. You won't be disappointed. They do go fast in the morning though!! One word - kolaches. For those who don't know what they are... it's basically a homemade Hot Pocket. A very soft bread filled with cheese and ham or a sausage link (more like hot dog sausage, not breakfast sausage). They are YUMMY! Their donuts are pretty good, too, but they are NOT Krispy Kreme. They are less sugary and feel a bit more dense - not as airy as the KK donuts. They have a large selection from chocolate covered to custard filled to cake. As someone who really likes Krispy Kreme, I can say these take a bit of adjusting to, but they are good all the same. Definitely give them a try if you're in the area! read more

I hate to say this buuuuut....I wasn't impressed. I had high hopes for this place from the reviews but it was just OK. My coworkers had the exact same thoughts. Now let me be clear... I don't think the doughnuts are nasty or anything they're just more average than I expected. Now the service here gets 5stars! Super sweet & friendly staff. They do not mind taking their time to greet you & answer whatever questions. Major kudos for the service. I don't mind returning. This place is an institution in Hoover. It has been there for years. Way before the "Hot n Now" people came to town. Their donuts are amazing. They have all the standard stuff and quite a few fruit filled that can't be found at other places. They also serve kolaches which are great anytime of the day. read more

Growing up in Alabama, I thought Krispy Kreme was the be-all, end-all of doughnuts, and all the other brands could never live up to a Hot 'n Now. However, on a trip to Starkville a year or so back, I was having a hankering for doughnuts and tried to find a Krispy Kreme. Luckily for me, I found (again, in Starkville, of all places) Shipley first. When I first walked in, I thought this place would be just another Dunkin-like place, with "doughnuts" that were more akin to a bagel with glaze than anything _I_ would have called a doughnut. However, after my first bite into a maple-glazed-with-nuts, I was like Buddha under the Tree of Enlightenment. I was forever converted to the Army of Shipley. I try and convert others to Shipley, but it's hard with the closest location to Tuscaloosa being this one in Hoover. I tell all who will hear that this place has the best doughnuts around - period. Furthermore, unlike Krispy Kreme, they actually carries a variety of doughnuts and doughnut-related baked goods. As was mentioned in another review, you have to try the kolaches. I think the best testament to Shipley I can give is this: I will drive an hour to get some fresh Shipley doughnuts (well, I did before the gas prices spiked up), but even after the Krispy Kreme in Tuscaloosa was destroyed by the April 27th tornado, I haven't had the same desire for Hot 'n Now doughnuts from Krispy Kreme. Today the staff went above and beyond the call of duty! My son who is flying in today, Christmas Eve, from Shanghai, China will be thrilled to discover he will have cinnamon twists for Christmas breakfast! We didn't know that Shipley's was closing at noon today and arrived at 12:04 to discover the doors locked, staff cleaning up, and a full tray of twists in plain view. My husband was ready to abandon all hope but I called on the off chance they would answer. They did, I begged and they showed good Christmas spirit! Shipley's Donuts are the best in the world. I used to be Krispy Kreme enthusiast, but I haven't been to Krispy Kreme or any other donut place after I went to Shipley's. The donuts are cheep (In my opinion) and delicious. My favorite one is probably the "Bullseye." Its a chocolate donut and in the middle, where there's a hole on most donuts, there is icing and sprinkles. The donut holes are super good too!! They also have a pretty cool rewards program. Every visit you get a spot. 3 Spots= Free Glazed Donut, 4 Spots= Free Coffee, 5 Spots=Free Specialty Donut, and 10 Spots= Free Kolache. If you haven't been, it is definitely worth a try. read more

This used to be a great place for half priced donuts after 5: they had a great cheese Danish, and good long johns. However, they stopped the half priced after 5, they have stopped baking earlier in the day so later in the day they are out of everything good, and they have not had any of my favorites the last 5 times I have stopped by. Today I gave up on ever getting a chocolate long john or a cheese Danish again. Instead, I got the "peach fritter" it had 3 tiny peach pieces, might as well have called it a cinnamon twist bun. It was flavorless and peach less. My wife's two donuts were boarder line stale / day old. This will be the last time I stop in. I can only hope they close and Dunkin doughnuts moves it so I can get something decent other than Krispy cream. This is probably my husband and I's favorite donut place in the B'ham area. I would have taken a picture but the donuts and kolaches didn't last the car ride home. The kolaches are like a grown-up Hot pocket that you can actually tell what's inside. Delicious and always fresh. The donuts are moist, full of flavor, and finger-licking good. I also love their old fashion cinnamon roll. They put raisins in it and it adds the perfect extra touch. Sunday mornings can be a little crowded but this place always has a lot of staff working and ready to keep the line moving. We drive over to Hoover from Vestavia & will continue to do so. Great cheap little Donut place that sells some regular food too! I got the Classic Sugar Donut and a Strawberry glazed Donut and they were both awesome! They also sell really interesting and creative ones as well like a PB&J Donut and one called a Bullseye with filling in the center. read more

They have a massive variety and the lady working the counter is even sweeter than the donuts she sells. No doubt a mother who keeps her hustle and helped me select all kinds of donuts considering i am terrible at decision making. I personally recommend the blueberry donuts because I am a huge blueberry fan and they do those justice. The only location in Birmingham and they have the best traditional doughnuts and cake doughnuts, plus wonderful kolaches. I say traditional because like many Southerners I grew up knowing the Krispy Kreme style of doughnuts, these are not the same but great nonetheless. The glazed blueberry cake doughnuts have the right amount of blueberry to not be overwhelming and the thin glaze on top finishes it off perfectly. The glazed doughnuts are nice and doughy, but not chewy like some places (ahem Dunkin). They have a variety of kolaches (think a cylindrical roll stuffed with meat and cheese). The pizza, BBQ pork, and ham and cheese are my favorites. read more

Interesting experience at Shipley Do-Nuts this morning. Now, first let it be said that I've been a big Shipley fan for a long time. They've been a part of the Saturday morning routine for years and I've intentionally made the longer drive to Shipley (vs. the much shorter drive to Krispy Kreme or Dunkin) which has always seemed to me to have much more of that local, neighborhood feel and, IMHO, bigger donuts. But what a difference 2 weeks makes! The usual order is a dozen donuts with a cinnamon twist counting for 2 of the 12. It's one of those routines, like being on auto-pilot, that makes life simple and keeps my kids happy. But today when I filled my box with 10 donuts and ordered my 8-year-old's cinnamon twist I was informed, "can't do that anymore." Huh? (I was thrown a bit off) "Corporate," I was told, "shut that down. It wasn't our decision." Ok, not that big a deal, but when I took a look at the donuts, they were noticeably smaller this go-around. Not sure what's going on @ Shipley. While I'll readily admit that even though they were on the puny side - especially the cinnamon twist which was about 1/2 the normal size - the donuts taste great. However I will say that when an organization that has historically delighted regular customers begins to confuse and perplex them by cutting corners and confusing customer satisfaction with short sighted decisions, that's a slippery race to the bottom. I would (and have) gladly paid a premium for a superior product and a great experience, but today I got neither @ Shipley. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come for my favorite donut shop, because Dunkin makes a good product too and they're 5 minutes from the house! read more

I LOVE SHIPLEYS DONUTS! They are my favorite donuts to et and dare i say, better than Krispy Kreme. We dropped by here on a road trip and were delighted to stuff our faves with freshly made donuts. They were thick and light with the right amount of chew and not overly sweet. They also had some other donut creations that looked good like a butterfinger, but decided to keep things simple. The staff was great as she willing to give us samples and showed great hospitality. The only thing I wish they had were some Tamales like the one in Mississippi. You may think tamales from a donut place would be bad but are so good and better than those from Mexican restaurants. Would definitely come again! read more
