Showed up with my wife right when they open and we loved it. This place has an awesome old school Japanese vibe, service was good. The fish here was what sold us, Taste super fresh and tasty. Definitely worth trying and this place has been open here for over 50 years amazing. This place definitely needs to be a 5 star thank you.

My kid and I needed to eat something warm since the weather was cold and windy that night. We ordered nabeyaki udon and a combo bento. Both were great. The ambiance is old quaint Japanese eatery but there is a more formal tatami eating area you can request. Looks like there are regulars there. I'll probably be one too.

Shinano is an older Japan restaurant that has been a staple in the Monterey Park for decades. Monterey Park used to be the "Little Tokyo of SGV" as the city was predominantly Japanese. Shinano serves authentic Japanese food that is consistently delicious at a very reasonable price. They currently have a weekday buy one get one at half off ( BOGO 1/2 ) special on sushi rolls. Definitely try this place out if you just want simple good Japanese food. No frills. My friend and I ordered lunch specials today for $14.99. I ordered the chicken teriyaki and tempura combo special and my friend had chicken teriyaki and California rolls. Food came out fast which was perfect for a work day. Great yummy food as always. They have the best green tea around here which really complements our meals!! Nowadays dining is so expensive but this place has been able to keep their prices down so come and give them some business!! Good portions and I have enough leftovers for tonight's dinner! Good eats without breaking your piggybank! Lol.

I really don't know what all the hatters are talking about. Went today for lunch and everything was still good and very reasonable prices still. Y'all need to support local businesses

I've been here before but now that I've seen this not no more !!!! The food was cold the people were rude.

My go to order is the Shokado for lunch. Today the salmon and tuna sashimi was excellent. It was a great cut of fish. The tempura is always fresh and the chicken teriyaki was good. The sauce is not too sweet or salty.

Absolutely amazing experience at Shinano! We ordered sashimi, six different rolls, and tempura -- everything was fresh, beautifully presented, and bursting with flavor (my faves were the Cajun Salmon Roll + Salmon Lava Roll - not pictured because I dug in immediately ). The sashimi melted in our mouths, the rolls were creative and delicious, and the tempura was light and perfectly crisp. Did I mention they have a BOGO 50% off on rolls right now? (STEAL!) AND you have a chance to win a Labubu with a $50+ purchase? Bummer that I didn't win it, but it was still fun to spin the wheel. Friendly service with an authentic ambience, which made it even better. 10/10 recommend.

This place has been around for 49 years! Traditional Japanese food and a homely vibe in the heart of Monterey Park. The sushi is delicious and they have a wide variety to choose from. The salmon lemon roll , mango crunch roll and jalapeño Hamachi are definitely something to try. They aren't skimpy with the fish. Servers Dylan and Chase were friendly and handled the busyness swiftly and professional.

My family and I had dinner here recently to celebrate my aunt's birthday. Since we were a party of 10, we were seated in their backroom. This worked out great since we had 2 toddlers with us, and the area was a private area. I ordered the 2-piece combo with beef teriyaki and tempura. The food was good, and the restaurant had a nice cozy vibe. However, my cousin's husband didn't get his food till we were all almost done eating and he had been waiting a long time. We kept informing the server that he was still waiting on his food, and it wasn't until they finally counted all our plates that our server realized he had forgotten to put in the order. He then informed the kitchen and they finally brought out the missing plate. I understand mistakes happen, but I think they should have given us the plate free of charge due to the inconvenience.

This is an old school Japanese restaurant with a good happy hour menu if you want your sushi fix. We come here on the weekdays for $5 salmon hand rolls and buy one get one 50% off rolls. Our go to day is Tuesday because of the sushi chef and our preference of how he prepares the hand rolls. We usually order the black dragon roll and salmon lemon roll. The spicy tuna on rice is also very yummy. The place is a little run down but still has good sushi for the price. We have also tried the boat that serves multiple meats for a larger party and it was very filling. The service can be slow depending on how busy they are. If you just want sushi, I would recommend sitting at the sushi bar so you can order directly with the sushi chef. All the chefs are very friendly.

Food: our family comes here on occasion to get our Japanese food fix. The combo meal that can come with sashimi if desired is of good value. Food is decent and prices are reasonable. Venue: place is cute and homey, but you can tell it's a little old andrun down, and could use a freshen up. Service: people are always nice. Also waiter is very cute haha

Lunch combo chicken and veggie tempura! was delicious and a good price. Ordered hot tea it hit the spot. I didn't like the rock n roll spotify so i mentioned and eventually it got changed to more subdued music. My friend bought some rolls they were plain ones nothing special. I'll go back and try another combination lunch.

I'm on the fence about this place. I love sushi and have had it many many times, so if you're a sushi fan you know good sushi! This place is just that, it's good sushi. Nothing above the line nothing below. The service is definitely good, friendly and attentive staff. I have been about three times and I have seated at different spots: once at the bar, once at a dining table, and once in a private room in the back. All offered the same great service. The only reason why I am giving three stars is due to its cleanliness. It's not dirty, but it can have better attention to its facility. Overall, I'll go back for sushi anytime, specially considering they serve your wine glass extremely well! Plum wine all the way!

They went all out for her birthday and they also worked with us to make sure that her birthday cake was brought out during the happy birthday song! Our server cracked jokes the entire night and made sure we got sauces and water whenever we needed. As for the food, we started with the Kala Sampler, which has asada nacho bites, chicken buffalo wings, potato and chicken tinga, and taquito dorados. The Kala Sampler is good for four people so order accordingly if you have a bigger party. My hubby and I shared the parillada, which had multiple meats that can be put into either a corn or flour tortilla along with rice and beans. For meat, we had marinated steak, chicken breast, seasoned shrimp, cactus, and chorizo. My favorite was the seasoned shrimp. The steak felt dry to me but everything was still good and flavorful with the molcajete salsa, which tasted like sweet tomato. We were not able to finish and had to take most of this home because the portions are just that generous! All this for the price of $55 for the parillada. They also offer this service where they take a complimentary group photo and they print other individual and couple photos for sale. I never understood the business model of these services but at least you get a complimentary photo with the Kalaveras logo!

I've been there two times with my boyfriend and both times we made our steak perfect. They also make their drinks ( I ordered a tequila soda ) pretty strong I might say. They have like 3 or 4 bartenders available so they were pretty attentive. Waiters were also attentive. We went around 7:30pm on a Saturday night. A crowd of adults from all ages were singing karaoke. It was good vibes, but it looks like it gets busy and packed. There is back parking, but if you do not know how to back up and park then you are basically screwed on a busy night so be prepared. A complete dinner is available, served with a large baked potato, 2 pieces of garlic toast and little salad bar. I found the drinks to be well priced and the service was excellent.
