I've noticed this unassuming restaurant in the past driving down Atlantic but never thought to try it because usually when I come out to Monterey Park, I buy or eat Chinese food. I came for lunch and ordered the sukiyaki don and a rainbow roll. The server said there was a buy one, get one half off sushi special going on this week so I also ordered a spider roll. All the food was very well presented and tasty. The server was very nice, attentive, and polite. If this restaurant were closer to where I live, I would come more often. Shinano is an older Japan restaurant that has been a staple in the Monterey Park for decades. Monterey Park used to be the "Little Tokyo of SGV" as the city was predominantly Japanese. Shinano serves authentic Japanese food that is consistently delicious at a very reasonable price. They currently have a weekday buy one get one at half off ( BOGO 1/2 ) special on sushi rolls. Definitely try this place out if you just want simple good Japanese food. No frills. My friend and I ordered lunch specials today for $14.99. I ordered the chicken teriyaki and tempura combo special and my friend had chicken teriyaki and California rolls. Food came out fast which was perfect for a work day. Great yummy food as always. I've been coming to this restaurant since the early 90's. I love everything about it, especially the booths. I've had chronic low back pain since November of 1989 and can only sit in a booth at restaurants. I used to drive in from LA with my friends. I'm usually there nowadays with my sister or boyfriend. I also used to bring my Godmother's kids who were lil kids. Ok, food: Love their Sukiyaki, must have it more often. Adore their Chawanmushi!! This is the only place I know that serves it! They serve a very tasty Tempura Zaru Soba. The tempura is always very crunchy and never greasy. The noodles are cold and refreshing, especially in summer. If you're there with enough people, order a boat. They have 2 varieties. One of them has a sizable amount of Tempura and your choice of Chicken or Beef Teriyaki. I can't remember if Sushi is included in that boat. There's always a Sushi chef on the premises, ready to make whatever type of Sushi that you like. Oddly enough, my favorite is Tamago. I go there at least once a month. Their servers are on point. Definitely recommend! read more

My family and I went to Shinano to celebrate my aunt's birthday. It is a very small restaurant, but they accommodated us in a small "banquet" area in the back. Everything started ok, except several things we tried to order, FROM THE MENU, were no longer offered (why not update the menu?), so we had to continue looking, making our order process take longer. What made me decide to give them 1 star was the food order (the food itself was decent, but not spectacular), which not only took longer to be delivered, but they forgot ONE of the orders, and even though we made several requests for the missing plate, our waiter wouldn't bring it, and even brought a female waitresses to see what the problem was, but all she did was give a dirty look, and left. This could have been easily resolved if the waiter would have only COUNTED the number of orders and matched it to how many people were in our party, but instead he kept promising the missing plate, and almost an hour later, AFTER WE WERE ALMOST DONE EATING, the plate finally arrived, and he admitted that he had placed the number of orders incorrectly. I will never go back, recommend this restaurant, or even reconsider ordering take out from there, ever again, and seeing all the other reviews about how terrible the service is, and how perpetually short-staffed they seem to be, it might be best if they just went out of business, or sold to a more competent owner/manager! read more

Big mistake, the place wasn't too busy yet many tables were not bussed. We had to wait for the server to clean a table for us to sit. We sat and noticed that the tables around us were still not being bussed, there were gnats flying around us. Tables kept leaving and they were still not being bussed. The food is always hearty and good here, especially the sashimi, it's very fresh! The chirashi deluxe was a nice treat for myself, the slices are a good size and the tuna has a beautiful color. The deluxe comes with a sweet shrimp and the deep fried head is tasty too. If you like sashimi and want to treat yourself, definitely give it a go! Regular chirashi is an option too. If the sushi bar is busy, it's because everyone knows the rolls and sashimi are tasty. The salmon lemon roll is a fan favorite from friends- I'm not into lemons so I like the baked salmon, mango crunch (it's the first time I had it, it was tangy and a little spicy, quite good!) and rainbow roll (because, well... I like sashimi!). The chicken katsu is so crunchy and juicy inside which my friend got with curry- just look at the portions in the photo! I'm guessing reviews talking about it being "soggy" is the katsudon where katsu is cooked with egg on rice, because there's no way it's EVER been soggy as regular katsu when it's ordered by myself, family, or friends. Expect a good crunch! I challenged my friend to finish it and he couldn't, it's a lot of food with the curry. I can't complain about that. I waited a long time till I had a big meal with friends to post a lot of photos, if only I could eat more in one sitting for more photos. We came here for dinner after watching a movie at the nearby AMC Atlantic Times Square. Since it has been colder than usual in Southern CA these past several days, we decided to get udon. My friend got the regular udon. I got the Nabeyaki udon. Our waiter was friendly, and checked on us and refilled our green teas at least once. They might have been shorthanded because he wasn't able to be as attentive after more people came in. We had to wave him down to ask for the bill. A fly seemed to have entered the restaurant at some point when perhaps the front door was opened by a customer. It was flying around and we found ourselves constantly waving it away from our food. Finally, our waiter came with a fly-swatter and tried to swat and shoo it away. I don't think he meant to make a commotion. But there was just so much swatting and shooing activity right around where we sat in his attempts to try to get to the fly. If it wasn't for that, we would have had a much more relaxed dinner without having to look constantly around us for the fly possibly landing on our food. The udon was hot and delicious and our green teas kept us very warm as well on a cold day :) ! There is a small parking lot in the back of the restaurant and we easily parked there :) ! I wanted to take my mom out for a nice dinner here for Mother's Day since she's been craving the food here for a couple weeks now, but I must say that I am worse than disappointed in the service we received. I could see that the restaurant had a few tables with people, but most of it still looked pretty empty. We were seated right at the front, next to another party, where staff should have definitely been able to see us and not completely forget about us. I would like to note here that the 2 of the 4 visible staff members looked a bit frantic as they were bustling around the half empty restaurant for reasons unknown because almost all the people in the main room looked nearly done with their meals. The meal started off alright. This young woman seated us and came back to take our order. The first thing to come out was the spicy tuna roll, but it didn't have any wasabi or ginger with it. There were no staff around to ask for it, so we just ate some of it as is. Other things slowly started coming out, but the dragon roll was still nowhere to be seen. We were worried that they forgot about it, so we managed to stop one of the waiters and ask. He (waiter 1) asked the waitress who took our order and then the sushi chef and informed us that he was getting more crab for it. That was the last time I saw our waitress. She disappeared without a word and no one came to tell us that we were getting a different server or anything. I actually think she is a good server, but the way she left us is a bit frustrating. It was all downhill from there. The many serving plates and bowls were slowly piling up on the side of the tiny table. We tried to place them near the edge so they could come collect them, but they just shoved them to the other side with the plate when another plate came. Needless to say, there was hardly enough room to eat. We started noticing tiny little flies buzzing around, which we just kept shooing away as we ate. We asked waiter 2 for some wasabi and he said ok then rushed off to finish up something else. Some time later, we asked waiter 1 for wasabi when he dropped off my katsudon. We told him that we already asked waiter 2 but still hadn't gotten it. Instead of getting the wasabi himself, he instead confronted waiter 2 and waiter 2 said he would get it right away. Waiter 2 rushed off again. Most of the customers in this main area had already left except for us and 1 man in the corner by this time. When waiter 2 eventually returned some time later and started maybe cleaning up behind the bar instead of bringing us some wasabi, my mother understandably got a little angry. She loudly asked if we could see our server since we hadn't seen her at all in a while and he seemed confused but came closer. This time I asked him if there was a problem with getting the wasabi that we should know about. To that he rushed off to the kitchen and FINALLY got the wasabi. Since the staff were so absentee, it should come as no surprise that we ran out of water and tea pretty quickly. Although someone did fill my mom's tea cup once, I never got more water. When I ordered the katsudon, I asked the waitress if they still had it since it technically wasn't on the menu but I know i've seen it on the menu. She said it was usually a lunch special, but they could make it for me so I just ordered that. After waiting a long time for the katsudon, waiter 1 came out to ask me if sushi rice was okay since they had actually run out of normal rice. I said ok and he finally brought out this giant bowl of salty, soggy, and sopping wet excuse for a katsudon and a small bowl of sushi rice. I was really trying to look at the positive here because the flavor was pretty good even though it was salty. I just tried to tap off all that salty broth and ignore that mushy breading. The meat was fine inside after all. The rice was getting kind of gross near the bottom of the bowl since it had collected most of the salty broth, but I powered through because I don't like to waste food. At the end of the meal, we were so over it all. My mom could not wait to leave the restaurant and practically ran out as soon as possible. While waiting for waiter 2 to come back with my card and receipt, waiter 1 came out to ask if I wanted more rice since the bowl he originally gave me was so small. The restaurant did get a young group of about 10 that came and and they were a bit loud, not that bad. There were 2 waitresses working and they were quite busy but still friendly. On to the food. 01/05/2024 Stopped by for dinner 3 in our group. Short Wait 7 minutes for a table. We ordered I showed them the Yelp Check In for a Free ice cream or iced tea I was told that this was no longer valid. Then remove it from Yelp don't fool customers in thinking that they're going to get something that turns out to be nothing!!! We got the bacon wrapped scallops, curry udon, 2 item combo and a 3 item combo. The scallops were very tasty my daughter liked the curry udon, my 3 item combo beef teriyaki, tonkatsu, tempura was pretty good. When it was time to pay the bill I presented a $50 gift certificate the waitress said I don't know if this is good and asked when did I get this in 2019? What?? I just got this for Christmas 10 days ago. I was very insulted. When the bill came back I was charged the full amount I said I gave you a $50 gift certificate the waitress said ohh we forgot to apply it so can you just use this next time? My daughter looked at me and knows that I was about to start yelling with expletives. So she calmly asked the waitress to cancel the charge and apply the $50 gift certificate and she did.
