I actually went to Shilla for the first time 8 years ago so this review is way overdue... I took my daughters here to try bingsoo for the first time. Their menu had a decent list of bingsoo flavors but I will say I missed the tart flavor that they used to have. We chose strawberry and the man at the counter was very friendly. Inside the restaurant it was decently filled with plenty of tables to sit at. They had a variety of different pastries and desserts. One helpful thing to know is they actually have a very large selection of cakes compared to other local bakeries. Once our bingsoo was ready was took it to our table and it did not disappoint. I would say Shilla has the top bingsoo in the area. We had a great time and probably spent an hour there. Will definitely be coming back. read more

My friend and I were craving some bubble tea early during a weekday and this was one of the nearby places that was open. Their bubble tea selection was large although interestingly enough they automatically do bubble teas as smoothies unless you request it to be a milk tea. I ordered the Misutgaru (grain powder) smoothie with boba whilst my friend ordered the Taro milk tea with ice and jelly. We liked the taste of both drinks although I've never seen Misutgaru at other boba shops. The boba was a tad overcooked - mushy, soft texture with minimal chewiness. There is plenty of parking, seating, and space inside. It's potentially a good place to study as it wasn't too loud. The bakery items during the weekday didn't have a lot of variety, so be warned. There seemed to only be one person manning the cash register as well as preparing the orders. However, the wait time wasn't too long. Shilla in Centreville is pretty good by itself compared to the overwhelmingly too-sweet American counterparts in the area. However, there are so many Korean competitions in the DMV that it really cannot stand out. Is it bad? Not at all. There are just so many great places, it pales in comparison. I usually get my cakes at Tour le Jours. I usually pick up custard cream-filled pastries. They taste great and are my favorite. If you want cake, you talk to the staff, and they are generally very helpful. If you don't know what cake to get, I'd recommend trying the smaller slices. The interior decor is a little worn out since this place has been around for a while. Decor is below average. Food is average, I'd say. read more

This bakery is a local favorite and its been my go-to for a quick bread fix! I absolutely love the sweet potato cake at Shilla Bakery. I'm not sure how its made but I've never had anything like it before. It's such a unique dessert and tastes amazing. They offer a huge variety of baked goods, from subtly sweet pastries to savory options, and there's always something interesting to try. Its mostly a self-service experience so you grab a tray, pick out your items, and add them to your basket and go to check out. And everything is very reasonably priced making you want to get everything. The bakery itself is super spacious, with plenty of seating, making it a great place to study or meet up with friends. There's always groups of people catching up and chatting. Not sure how it compares to the other locations but the vibes and food are great at this one. read more

I think this location is okay but it's not any different when compared to the other Shillas Bakeries in the area. There's a lot of ample seating, it's really surprising that the location is pretty spacious compared to the location in Annandale and the one at Tysons. I stopped by here in search of the legendary Crookie ( it's going viral as it's a crossaint & and a cookie ) but I realized that's only in the Annandale & Tysons location. Bummer. I was hoping to indulge in bad decisions today but instead I got some snacks. I got their Ube Cookie & Churro Donut Bites for a pick me up snack if I get the urge wanting to eat something while driving around. I can't say it's good because I haven't tried it out but over all I think this place would fulfill your needs for a Korean bakery. It's been around as long as I remember Iron Age being open right next door so I'm sure it has its mark in the plaza. By far my favorite bakery to go to when I make a trip up to Virginia! Their pizza bread is to die for, I've had many pizza breads from different bakeries in Maryland but Shilla does it the best. It is not pictured because I am as so excited I stuffed my face before taking pictures. They also have a wide range of uniquely designed cakes and fun beverages to try. Haven't been to a Shilla for at least a decade. This Shilla was frequented back in the day; boy has it gone downhill. We stopped in for bingsoo after dinner, there were only a few tables occupied. We were assisted quickly though the staff carried no smile and were not pleasant. We ordered matcha bingsoo and the matcha color looked unsafe/ off. Some dark green with a hint of brown/dirty color. Could barely locate any dduk. It wasn't very good and then 10 minutes before closing time we were ushered to leave. Won't be back. read more

we have been buying cakes from them for years. My daughter's wedding cake a few years back was wonderful and up until the last year we would do nothing but rave. Decided to stop by for dessert after eating in the area. We came an hour into closing and we were surprised the number of people still here! I have been coming her for years and the ambiance has not changed much since. Even towards the end of the day, they still had a number of bread and pastries. We got a pasty, bingsoo and a brewed coffee. I appreciate how they offer brewed coffee at this time. While it's not too special, mostly every other cafe and bakery only have espresso based drinks after 3pm or so. I have noticed the pastry and some of the breads were kind of dense, but it was towards the end of the night. While it is not a new as some of the other cafes, it was still a good way to end the night, with dessert, coffee and good company. read more

A lovely place to get a meal, snacks, or coffee in the Centreville area This is a hidden gem in Centerville. It is a set of stores on the south side of Lee Highway just to the west of Centreville Road. It is across the parking lot from the Lotte Plaza Market and has lots of parking available. The store's website has this message, "Since we started baking in our small basement bakery in 1999, we've had one goal: to bake the best-tasting breads, cakes, and pastries." They have 5 locations in the Virginia and Maryland area. This is a very nice location. It looks like they have 2 storefronts with one dedicated just to open seating with tables set with good spacing. That section is to the left as you enter. It is a very nice and relaxing place to meet someone. The other part (to the right as you enter) has two parts. The first part, closest to the door, is a set of shelves with prepackaged items for purchase. The part farthest from the door is a counter where you can order prepared food and drinks. The staff was very nice, pleasant and helpful. The display case had some of the best-looking cakes I have ever seen. The shelves had different treats that were smaller portions and less expensive. They have a rather extensive drink menu behind the counter on the wall. I got a single treat and a tea. The prices are reasonable for the area and the economy. The service was quick and the atmosphere was nice. Overall, it is a nice place to have a get-together with a friend or meet for business. read more

Of course they have all the usual Korean Bakery things like coffee, tea, other beverages, baked goods (love the soborro bread)! I also came here to get the sweet potato cake, one of my favorites! It is a bit on the pricey end but totally worth it! It taste best with a hot cup of coffee or a cold glass of milk. The small is supposedly enough for 6-8 people but I think it's enough for for more. I had to postpone my wedding to next year, but we still wanted to get a cake to celebrate with our immediate family after our small church ceremony. We called ahead to inquire and were told they only needed about 3 days notice for special order cakes! We were nearby so we decided to order a week ahead in person anyways. The staff that took our order was super helpful and knowledgeable in giving us suggestions on design and flavor. there was no sign for outside food but i felt that was universal. however, me and my partner felt discriminated since there was a group of Korean elders sitting by us that had outside food and they weren't bothered or asked to leave. however, the owner or manager of this franchise walked to me and my partner speaking in korean sounding and looking very frustrated and asked for one of their employees to come speak to us in english. we understood and didn't take it to heart, but it felt very biased. we just came to study and eat a little and it wasn't like we didn't order from this bakery either. which took about 15 minutes to come out for an iced americano... and it was probably because the staff was eating behind the counters and talking with their mouth full when we ordered. at least go in the kitchen? or sit in a corner where no customers can see you? i also used the bathroom and i don't need to explain the bowel movements that was happening but it was taking longer than usual and one of the employees was banging on the restroom door. i asked my boyfriend if it was a customer or employee and he said employee because it was a young girl wearing the apron. if you were banging on the bathroom door, shouldn't you go use it immediately after i come out...? but i stayed an extra 10 mins and not even a customer or one of the workers went to use the bathroom. interesting. i wouldn't recommend coming to this location, go somewhere else. maybe on a busier day so you wouldn't have to deal with this nonsense. read more

It had been since 2016 since I made updates from my last review. Time for a new taste of their menu. No BingSoon or boba this time around. On my visit to centreville I new it was time to get a new and fresh outlook on the bakery. The bakery is a korean bakery known for their tasteful sweet breads, baked goods, cakes and bing soo. They have food, macaroons, boba tea and coffee as well. This is one of a few Shilla's located in the region. I came for lunch and a reason to bring some goodies home for the family. Last time I can drop bing soo. This time I tried their tuna sandwich. I paired it to go along with their sesame balls and a strawberry filled pastry for the road. The tuna sandwich was very light and the white bread for the sandwich was nicely toasted and airy. It was good. It came with a pickle. I only wished the cheese inside the sandwich was nice and gooey to go with the tuna. The cheese was barely melted. Maybe this is something that needs to be requested as preference. Instead of your typical potato chips on the side I was surprised to have their twist on chips, which were black sesame crisps. It was wonton strips lightly sweet and coated with sesame. It was pretty gosh darn good! The sesame ball was very crunchy, made of tapioca it was very chewy and gummy. Meh, It was just ok, it is not any way similar to the chinese sesame balls. I also got a strawberry filled pastry. Its and example similarly to when a donut and a croissant made a baby..this was the result. It's a cro-nut(my new word) type of pastry if I must say. The sweet korean lady was really sweet, the service here was great. I took home their chocolate mousse for my son's birthday! They were so nice to include candles and a Happy Birthday topper to make it even more special. Thankfully, they placed it in a sturdy cardboard box that was pleasantly easy to carry and keep upright. It made it for the drive home.. this is a great place to bring back sweet goodies to take home. The only thing I wish they would've done that they did for me last time is to put the samples out to try. I was bummed, no pastry samples out that time of day for me. read more

Let's make this clear: the bakery is awesome. It's a good solid 5. They have a lot of tasty treats and samples (assuming you don't go at a busy time or at the end of the day) for you to explore what kind of treats does the trick for you that day. You can tell their bakery is popular, because they have baskets for people to shop for multiple goods. It also seems to be the spot a lot of folks come to shop for their pastry treats for the week. Everything else is what brought this rating down. Do not try their hot sandwiches at least. I had the ocean grill (tuna panini) and... the cheese was basically still frozen?? Nothing about the sandwich was warm?? And they had the tiniest bag of homemade chips that don't really taste like chips? And they have no main place for water, so you have to ask for it and they give you the tiniest cup for it. They took over 20 min with my sandwich, that wasn't even warm. They forgot it the first time, so they did give us free donuts to compensate for the time. It may have been their saving grace, because their pastries are awesome. Average customer service.
