After coming from a day snowboarding in crested Butte, we had seen the location there, but it was getting late so we decided to go back to our hotel in Gunnison and wash up before going to the second location of Sherpa Café. We wanted to order for pick up, but the online ordering system was giving us issues at checkout. Instead, we called and placed our order over the phone, for a chicken tikka masala with garlic naan. When we arrived, the place was so cute, a freestanding building with an A-frame in front and inviting warm light and its own parking. We picked up the food, got back to the car and realized there was no silverware inside the bag, why? We went back inside and got some to take back to our hotel with us. When we got there, we loved the portion size and felt it was generous. the textures and cooking of the dish were perfect but the seasoning left something to be desired. As lovers of Indian food, we were looking for a bit more spice, not necessarily hot, but just more present in the flavor. It was overall a little bland. The staff were very nice and even gave us extra rice (i asked for "raita" on the phone haha but they misheard. Very sweet people. Thank you! read more

After spending the afternoon in Gunnison, I chose Sherpa Cafe for dinner. Some locals gave this place a "thumbs up" and after dining here tonight, I can see why. This place is situated in an older home or business. They did a marvelous job of decorating the interior. Love the stupa out front and the outside dining patio as well. Staff was very friendly as well. I ordered Papadam with dipping sauce, Chicken Makhani, Naan with Raisins & Coconut, Diet Coke (can), and Kheer. Food was amazing! My only feedback is they could improve the Papadam dipping sauce and provide more white rice with the entree. They only give you a small cup of it. One serving from your entree dish and it's completely gone. Naan was fantastic! I don't see Naan with Raisins & Coconut often. It's nice that Sherpa Cafe offers it as a Naan option. The chicken was really good and I loved the buttery sauce. Comparable to Butter Chicken. Kheer was a fantastic bookend to a lovely meal. I loved the raisins and nuts in the Kheer. I was thinking of dining at a few other places this evening. So glad I chose Sherpa Cafe! I had a great experience here. Service was slow. However, everything else made up for the slower service. I would love to return here again! I recommend checking out Sherpa Cafe if you live in Gunnison or if you're in town visiting. Hope your experience will be as memorable as mine was. I spent my formative years in Gunnison but managed to escape nearly 40 years ago. I have been back at least once a year since, and have seen plenty of things come and go; some good, some not so good. I've noticed the Sherpa Cafe over the past several trips but never quite made it there until today. It was a great experience with fast friendly service and absolutely amazing food! My wife said this was the best curry she has ever had, and she has sampled curry on several continents! I had chicken korma, which was fantastic. This was a great surprise, as one wouldn't expect to find this type of cuisine this far off the beaten path! Whatever they have going seems to be working, so keep it up! read more

After eating lots of bread and pizza on our vacation, I was very happy to find a place which had so many vegetarian options . We got the saag dip with naan and veggie momos . None of the food is served spicy but they'll gladly give you a bottle of their homemade spicy sauce (habanero based) if you like the heat. Overall (A-) It's a good place to get your fix of Indian/Nepalese food way out here. It's a nice safe bet place if you are craving Indian /Nepalese. Won't be the best but you won't be dissatisfied either Service (A-) The staff is super friendly and nice. They are trying there best. The food takes a little while to come out - but I was there on a Friday evening. They seem to serve the Naan as an appetizer not as part of the dinner. But maybe that is what folks want out here. Value (A-) It's fine around - $25-$30 per person. So the main dishes cost around $12-$20 each. Plus tip and tax. I got the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Garlic naan and the bill was just under $30 with tip and tax. It's around what I would expect to pay for Indian. Not expensive and not a great deal. Quality (B+) It was good but really "Americanized". Not as authentic as I would have liked it - and I don't mind americanized Indian food. Some reviews have called the flavors "bland". I would not go that far - I think that they lack some of the richness of flavors I was expecting. They are still good. This is a perfect place if you are introducing someone to Indian/Nepalese cuisine or if it's been a while and you are craving it. If you have been to more authentic places in Denver or England or Chicago or New York - it won't meet your expectations but it's not bad. For being located in Gunnison I think it is still a pretty good. read more

Simply put, the food here is bomb. I had tried Indian curry at a Nepalese restaurant once before and thought it wasn't for me. There was a something about it that made me think of butter flavoring. Not butter, butter *flavoring*. It was weird. At Sherpa Cafe, however, the tikka masala had a dairy richness about it that departed from what I would expect from a regular Indian takeaway, but didn't veer into that strange artificial territory I'd experienced before. The portion was great for two people to split for lunch. Plenty of juicy chunks of chicken breast. We scooped up our curry with garlic naan, a fully necessary accoutrement. The beef momos were also very delicious. The dumpling skin was thin with a tender chew, and pleated into cute little pouches. Each dumpling was chock full of flavorful beef that had produced a delicious soup in the bottom of the dumpling. The sauce that came with them was chilled and bright. A perfect pair for the super savory dumplings. I docked one point because service was a little slower than I would have preferred. But, if you sit on the patio, which features a fountain and colorful Tibetan flags that lift in the breeze, on a beautiful, sunny afternoon like we did, you won't be all too bothered. read more

A surprising gem in an unexpected place! The food is warm and comforting. The moms without the addicting dipping sauce are just dumplings, definitely try the dipping sauce! (You can even ask for spicy if you're feeling fiery!) The chicken curry was what my date had, and loved it along with a generous portion of rice. If you're a curry fan, Thai or Indian, you'll likely enjoy this curry! Last but not least, the Thukpa. A huge bowl of heart-warming, soul-refreshing stew. The naan dipped into this til soaked is the most comforting flavor and feel. I believe, if you're having appetizers and naan like we were, this bowl is big enough for two to share, but as a single dish, it's a wonderfully filling treat on a chilly day. Specializing in Nepalese and Indian cuisine, I was delighted with their Saag Panir, Chicken Biryani, fresh Naan and green chutney! I can't believe I'm giving 5 stars to an Indian restaurant Gunnison Colorado. We were staying in a hotel next door and planned to go to Gunnison Pizza on a Wednesday and they were closed. Sherpas was next door and smelled amazing. Not much interior wise. Tap beer prices were really good. $4 and $5 dollar selections. We ordered 2 orders of naan because they said it was small. Not true. Nice portions for $3 and $4. Really??? Our entrees were Chicken Makhani and Chicken Tikka Masala. One was cubed chicken and one was shredded. The sauces were pretty similar in taste, and when I say similar i meat SPECTACULAR. Maybe the best I've ever had. We're on a motorcycle trip and im gonna find away to get these leftovers home.
