Authentic shouldn't even be advertised anywhere near this place. My chicken quesadilla tasted like store bought rotisserie chicken with Colby jack shredded cheese. My husbands burger was very bland. Only seasoning they believe in is salt with more salt. My dad's tacos looked like something that came out of a box from a frozen food aisle. I'm an absolute lover of Mexican food and this was by far the worst I have ever had. I'm extremely grateful that I live 20 hours away and will never be back. read more

We have eaten here a few times over our month stay in the area. The food is well prepared and very tasty. Service is friendly and swift. The restaurant is clean and decorated nicely. The only drawback is that chips and salsa are not complementary. We have rarely experienced this and it was a letdown. This place is soooo good! The food is all made from scratch... even the tortillas are hand rolled! The chile rellenos are the best I've ever had, smothered in green or red chile, and the desebrado (shredded beef) dinner is delicious! Never had a bad meal! The service is great, as it's a family run place. If the parking lot looks full, stop in anyway because it's a really beautiful, spacious building and it's probably not as busy as the parking lot makes it look! read more

Lawnmower & garden plastic plant pots in patio room a BIG turnoff. Should use Mexican colorful pots for plants. Chili R was excellent and homemade. Update: 8/27/21 Finally made another trip in for lunch after 4 years - Salsa, much better than last time. Spicy but a little on the sauce side vs chunky. No complaints. Got a bean and cheese burrito with green chili and a beef taco, add guac and sour cream. My hubby and I were both satisfied! And the green Chile was spicy! We ordered a burrito & four chicken tacos. The bill came to $35 before tip. It seems like they've raised pricing since covid - as many restaurants have - which in this case really isn't worth it. The quality of food was very poor: cheap cheddar cheese & salsa that tasted like nothing even though I doused it on. Both burrito and tacos were pretty flavorless. We were treating ourselves and really wanted to support local businesses but it was a disappointing experience unfortunately. read more

Fairly authentic Mexican food. The tortilla chips were great. Salsa was pretty saucy and spicy. But good. My hard shell tacos were more like you'd get from the box but filling ok. So my wife and I like this restaurant - it has decent food and service and good enchiladas- it's a family run place. BUT they have been just randomly closed on weekends and weekdays. Just randomly. We talked to someone in charge that said they just can't find help. Every restaurant has a hard time finding help. The owners need to just be there to work. A restaurant that wants to stay going needs that core of hard working owners that are dedicated even when some of the help can't be there. We have made special trips to town to eat here and it's closed five times now. Weekends where other restaurants are raking in the dough these guys are takin time off. And when you can't count on a restaurant it's quickly makes its way off the list, sorry. The other Mexican place is open every day. Period. read more

We like the food here, but time and time again they are closed randomly with no explanation, despite their hours online saying open. I'm talking peak times on the weekend. This has literally happened 6 or 7 times. The most recent, we walk in on a Friday night at 7:00 pm and there are people eating in there but we were greeted with an employees saying, "sorry, we are closed." One star is still rating this place way too high! I ordered 3 soft shell tacos and an order of refried beans to go last night ... I chose beef over the chicken....paid $25.45 ...to go. drove 8 miles back to the ranch and opened up box, and started laughing....no taste dried out hamburger, lettuce and a couple of pieces of tomato....no onion, shredded cheese or anything else...flat out nasty food, and the beans.....all liquid, and runny like gravy. They advertise it as "authentic ".... they need to eat at the other Mexican restaraunts in town sometime. do yourself a favor, eat someplace else!!! read more

Unfortunately, I did not check the ratings on this place before giving them a shot. First off the sign outside says authentic Mexican food. But, when you walk in they have Asian paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling...should have taken that as the first warning. No, regrettably I decided to sit down. Clue number two that it wasn't "authentic," was the absence of any Latinos either working or eating in this place. Instead the entire staff looked like they were in High School. Now too the food, the salsa had potential but was over salted and the heavily salted chips made it unpalatable. For dinner I selected the smothered shredded burrito and it was a major disappointment. The beef was moist but has almost no flavor and the green chili sauce was thin atop watery. So, in summation I suggest you find another "authentic" Mexican restaurant in town read more

My wife and I moved to Crested Butte three years ago. As far as we're concerned this is the best Mexican food in the area. It's the only place we'll eat Mexican food between Gunnison and Crested Butte. It may be a little pricey, but try to find any restaurant in the area that isn't. Gunnison is a college town and Crested Butte is ski area. The people that run the restaurant are super friendly and fast. We ate there the first time 15 years when we first started coming thru the area on vacations. And I signed up to yelp using facebook. I've noted that yelp said I was from Arvada, Colorado. While I have been in Arvada on occasion, I have never lived there. So one star for yelp. read more

I guess I'll start off by saying that Mexican food is extremely hard to mess up, or so I thought. First, we waited close to 45 minutes just for our food to arrive finishing 2 large margaritas in the process. My wife's 2 chicken tacos were ice cold with chicken that looked and tasted like it was microwaved. The burrito I ordered was also cold and when it was brought out to our table with oven mits with the words "the plate is hot" it looked tasty. As I was careful to move the plate in front of me, the plate felt as if it was left out in the snow. My son ordered a cheese burger, yes that's what I said, and it came out with a raw bun and charred all over. The environment felt like I was in a small warehouse. Go somewhere else. read more

We were so thankful for the space they provided, and that they were operating so well during this time. We ate here last night for dinner, party of 9. We started our dinner looking at the resort place in Almont (sp?) and it was a bust! We ended up at Cafe Silvestre and the service was great, fast, food was wonderful (not normal Tex-Mex) that we are use to (we are from Houston, TX) but it was great...not a single complaint from any of the 9 in our party! I love Mexican food. I have a standard I've set in my stomach every time I walk into a Mexican restaurant. The food must be authentic, homemade and, of course, delicious. Cafe Silvestre hits on all points. In addition, the atmosphere and staff are excellent. I would have liked Mexican music playing, but the quality of food and staff are more important. The recent remodel is a huge improvement, though I liked the coziness of the smaller original restaurant. Bottom line: Cafe Silvestre is the place in the Gunnison area for excellent Mexican food. Your soft drink glass will never be empty, your menu questions will always be answered politely and knowledgeably and you'll be full in the most satisfying way when you leave.
