I am sorry to give this place a 2 but too many issues that just need to be corrected. I hope this review helps with the quality of the food and drink. Let's start with the chips and salsa chips are cold and the salsa was just out of the refrigerator, not that I being cold is bad but the flavor is lacking. It needs some freshness like a pepper, salt , and cilantro. Next the house margarita tasted like water and tequila not much flavor to speak of. Maybe I got the top of the batch but it wasn't any good. My son and I got the chimichanga. As you can see in the pics not really crispy it's very blonde. The ground beef was good but not crispy or have a sauce to help add flavor. So I ordered the green chili to put on top. Again no flavor needed salt really bad. The beans and rice didn't have much flavor either. Salt is lacking for sure. The highlight of the evening was the Sopapillas with honey. Could use a longer cook but spot on!! I suppose our first hint of trouble should have been the fact that there were absolutely no other patrons here (none!) while the Mediterranean place next door was packed. Next was the fact that our server, nice as she seemed, spoke very little English. And she also seemed to understand very little Spanish because when I ordered a dish from the menu, in Spanish, she asked me to show her on the menu and then repeated the name of the dish exactly as I had a moment previously. Considering how empty (no, really. Empty!) the place was, it was a bit odd that it took so long for our margaritas to arrive. Big as they were, they were only just okay and certainly not worth the high price charged. The food arrived some time later and, to her credit, the order was delivered correctly. The serving sizes were huge, we got what looked like a dozen tortillas between the two of us, but that didn't make up for the quality of the food. I'm not saying it was bad, but it wasn't exactly good. We ordered two very different dishes and they looked and tasted identical. Beef or chicken in a red tomato-ey sauce. We've lived in places like San Diego, Los Angeles, and Santa Fe so I think we know good Mexican food when we taste it. This wasn't it. All of that being said, the menu is impressive and, quite frankly, why we came. The website made it seem like the chef/owner would impress us with his food. Perhaps we were here on an off night, but we aren't brave enough to find out. We will keep watching the reviews here and return when it seems the food quality has improved. I was going to give just two stars, but I went for three in consideration of the free large shots of tequila we were given in the middle of our meal. Nice touch! read more

Terrible service. Manager is head chief and gets offended when individuals do not like the food. Even after sending a whole plate back we are still being charged and told by employees that he gets offended and does not care whether someone doesn't likes the food. The service in general was terrible, especially working in the restaurant industry in Florida this would be unacceptable. Once the manager was able to walk by and see me writing this review then it was taken off. And also I don't think your employees should be calling the manager a d**k to patrons. I've worked in the restaurant industry for a little over three years and my partner has been in this restaurant industry for almost a decade. What a delightful afternoon we had on an impromptu stop at AGAVES in Gunnison, CO. We have never been here, but have yearned for some Mexican food on our many visits. Sat on the patio as light showers passed thru. It totally felt like an afternoon sitting in an outside independent establishment in Cabo Or Costa Rica. Perfect music, atmosphere, and service. We had a Sangria and A Cadillac Margarita. Moved on to a bowl of Chicken Tortilla Soup which was a rich broth full of chicken and crispy tortillas and a serving of fresh ceviche. Topped it off with Traditional Tequila shots. We will be back. read more

We've been in a Mexican food rut. They've all started to taste the same. While visiting our daughter at Western, we decided to give Agave a shot. Boy were we glad! The skirt steak in the Carne Asada Quesadilla had so much flavor. We also tried the Super Burrito and it was Super Yummy. The servers, Parker and Jesus were extremely attentive and made sure the tables were being sanitized. You could feel the cleanliness. If you're really lucky, Jesus might even show off his creative side and plate your dessert with an artistic flair. We will definitely be back! read more

The food was good. Chili relleno was on par and something to order again. The super burrito was not as super (large) as I thought it would be. It almost looked like an enchilada. I also ordered it with shredded beef but it came out with ground beef. Not worth the hastle of sending it back. The fresh lime margaritas IMO are not worth the $14.50. This was some of the worst food service we have ever had. Our food came in shifts. We did not get to eat together as family, on our way back home, from our weekend get-away. This place is absolutely the best place to eat with great customer service! Even when they are busy, they always seem to have a great smile and friendly service. We always enjoy the music and sit on patio during summer. The restaurant is superior, and is always clean! By far this is the best Mexican restaurant in Gunnison to eat. The margaritas are the best in town, hands down!! Believe me, I know a good margarita when I sip on one. No cheap tequila here, only the best tequila served. The deserts are well worth the price. Chips and salsa are always good too. I suggest getting the fajitas, they are the best in town as well as the carnitas tacos yum! Chili rellenos is another one of my favorite dishes! We have been coming here for years and we are still treated with such amazing gratitude from these local owners. We have greatly appreciated this kind of treatment, with us being local this means a lot to us. The good: Our server Jesus was very friendly and the restaurant was able to accommodate our large party on a very busy weekend which was very much appreciated. Additionally, he got our drink order out to us pretty quickly which was great. The okay: Their margaritas weren't great but they weren't bad. I normally might have a couple, particularly when they aren't that strong like these but I found I wasn't really interested in another. The not so good: The food was remarkably bland. It wasn't bad and most of our party thought it was just okay (most ratings were below 5 out of 10) but we had higher hopes. And while our service was very friendly, it took way too long to order and get our food as well as the final check. I might give it a try again in a pinch. read more

Best Mexican restaurant in town. Food doesn't look sloppy, like it's scooped out of a buffet. (Anejos). I've never been disappointed with the food, and always finish it all, even if I can't. Prices are a little high, but to be able to have the owner/chef come out and talk to your table, is something this town needs more of. Every time I've been, the owner has brought me a shot on the house, and calls me amigo. (Friend). As far as I'm concerned, he cares about his customers, and wants them to have a great experience, and most of all......have a good time! If that doesn't deserve a 5 star, I don't know what does. I've been cooking for 14 yrs, and this is my favorite restaurant in town. Everyone's happy, and no disrespect from any staff members. Below average overpriced food. But the service was the worst. Resturant was not busy. They forgot my appetizer completely and didnt even appolgize at the end of the meal when i told them. we asked for the water jars to be refilled and they dissappeared never to return. They forgot our dining partners drink for 20 minutes until we told them. They left the dirty dishes on the table for over 45 minutes after we were done eating and left 4 there and never picked up. After giving us the checks it took 25 minutes for them to process all of them. Seem like nice people but they couldn't care less about their customers. Service was horrible. Again the resturant was not busy, all the help just disappeared all the time. Chili relleno was soggy not very good. The meat in dishes was very tough. If this is the best Mexican food in town i feel sorry for them. read more

I love this place. With so many Mexican restaurants in such a small town, Agave seems to be overlooked. They serve pickled vegetables in addition to the standard chips and salsa, which is an excellent touch! The El Agave appetizer platter is a hidden gem. . . It's large enough to feed two people for dinner. Margs are good, too. . . Went to this place cause they had out door seating. The food was way over priced for what you got, the food was bland. The service was terrible, I got the combo with the taco enchilada and tamale... I asked for chicken in my enchilada and for it to be smothered in pork green chili and no beans. Well, they got the no onions part right out of all of it. Then they only brought out one plate at a time. Like 5-10 mins between each plate. I asked for extra napkins and chips. Neither of which I got after asking 3 times... I over heard the next table sending back their plates cause it was wrong. My mom had to ask them after about 10 mins to bring her check and card back. Agave is good and all but really over priced. It's average Mexican food at best but they charge like they're the only ones in town.

My friends and I were on the hunt for a good time. After a visit to another Mexican restaurant in town that provided nothing but disappointment we were grateful to have decided on switching the plan to Agave. We were welcomed with freedom to sit anywhere; choosing the party patio completed with lights, humming birds and a good piece of man as a server named Jorge. I'm in love. Meh. Quesadilla needed double the cheese and pastor burrito was mostly gristle and fat. Flavor was boring.

Family owned business. The server, I believe the son, was very nice. The restaurant was clean. The food was fresh and hot and I asked for a smaller version of an enchilada because I was going to my hotwl room and didnt want to waste and they accommodated. On my graduation day, we went here for lunch. My family and I sat ourselves and waited for menus, and no one ever came. We went to the from multiple times to ask to be served and were ignored 3 times. When someone finally came, they told us they were out of most of their drinks, and that a different waitor would be around to take our orders. When he finally came, we said we were ready to order, and he said the kitchen wasn't ready yet and we could not order. This entire experience took about 45 minutes when we finally decided to leave eithout ever being served water or the complimentary chips and salsa the other tables had been served. Really a laughable experience at Agave tonight. Hoped to go and get some good food after long days at work, and was excited to see only one other table taken. Was not greeted by hostess, who was online shopping for shoes in one of the booths, so we seated ourselves. After agreeing to pay $3.75 for an iced tea with no refills and $5 for a corona, orders were placed. It was then that the waiter (who is supposedly one of Gunnison's best) went to the table next to us and asked if they wanted more drinks. Made it apparent that he knew them quite well. Told us "I won't charge you" for a refill on the chips. After around 30 minutes of waiting, one of our plates came out, and I had to go in and ask where the other was after 5 more minutes. He said the kitchen messed up and will be out soon (would not have even mentioned it to us). So while my food was getting cold, he decided to bring out tequila shots (ON THE HOUSE) to the table next to us, and did not even look our direction. Food alone was maybe a 3/10. Really a laughable and pathetic experience tonight, no wonder there were only 2 tables full on a summer Saturday night! Also no citronella or tiki torches on patio, mosquitos everywhere.
