I am the owner of a 2013 BMW 3 series. For years I have been pretty good with keeping up with the service required on my car. Just recently I fell out of warranty but as many times that I have taken it to the dealership for some reason the engine light has kept coming on no matter how many times the problem has been addressed. The last time I took my car to the dealership they told me that it would cost me almost $400 just to run the diagnostic. But I refused to pay that for a problem that keeps occurring ESPECIALLY after they have "serviced" my car more than a half a dozen of times. Now that I have Kelly to service my car over at Playa Shell, he informed me about the California 7 year/70,000 Emissions protection coverage which basically states that for any vehicle sold in Cali when there is something that will make the check engine light come on within that time frame the manufacturer has to cover the warranty and service the car and fix the problem. So he directed me to return to the BMW dealership because it was a state law and they had to fix it for no charge. Sure enough I went back to the dealership and low and behold they took my car in and gave me a loaner with no questions asked. I see why people like Kelly do well with their business and stay around for a long time. Being a female, often we are taken advantage of because rightfully so, we aren't knowledgeable enough about things like this. To add, it takes someone who cares about PEOPLE and who want to treat everyone with the same level of professionalism no matter what gender they are. Had it not been for Kelly telling me this info, I could have spent thousands of dollars getting this problem fixed considering that it was BMW's responsibility in the first place. If you need someone who does well with foreign vehicles, HANDS DOWN, Kelly and his guys at Playa Shell are the ones to go to. He has a mountain of knowledge, a great attitude, and is very fair and upfront with you on what he thinks can be done. If you want to know how he won this glowing review, just read on.... THE DETAILS: First off, I love my bimmer, I baby it, it's an '03, and I try my best to keep her running smooth. But about a month ago, she unexpectedly felt like she was dragging an anchor. In fact, the engine would suddenly stall out - particularly up ramps - which NEVER HAPPENS. As soon I could, I took her to my mechanic. But surprisingly, it was very frustrating because I would pick up my repaired car, it would run fine for a day, then the same problem would occur. This happened 3 times, over the course of 3+ weeks. (and keep in mind I kept needing car rentals b/c I thought my car was fixed) Finally, down and desperate, I called around and my relatives recommended I try out Kelly / Maurice at this Shell. (Like as in the Gas Station???) But with nothing to lose, I drove over with my limping car in the morning. The repair shop wasn't open yet, but I had been told to leave my keys and a note at the counter. Kinda odd... but, when your family tells you they got a guy, hey... So a few hours later, Kelly calls me up. First off, I was surprised at how positive and uplifting he was. Dude's kinda funny... but more importantly, he went over the symptoms my car had and wanted to know specifics. I told him about the stalling, the engine, and about my many visits to the mechanic. Kelly assured me he'd do his best to get to the bottom of this. The next day, I get a call from Kelly. Again, great energy, which made me feel hopeful, but then he asked if I was sitting down. Ah sh******t... Kelly said he figured out why my mechanic probably couldn't ID the problem. Because the issue wasn't easily identifiable. But in all his years, he believed the culprit to be a major fuel component that needed repair. And the costs: $8,000+. Yeah, I nearly FELL OUT of my chair. But, but, BUT, here's where Kelly went above and beyond: He told me in talking with his guy at BMW, he discovered my particular '03 model just so happened to be a one of the first super ultra low emissions vehicles. (totally not making this up -- just google SULEV) And it just so happened, that this major issue, was most likely covered by a 15 yr / 150k mile warranty. Yeah, I almost FELL OUT of my chair again. And as I was still transitioning from total despair to absolute awe, Kelly told me his guy at BMW Santa Monica was expecting the vehicle. Just bring it in to them, and they'll confirm, then repair if it's under warranty. So I did... and it was.. and I picked up my fully repaired car today. So yeah, GO HERE. And have Kelly check out your car. He's one of the good ones, because he's honest, positive, and will do an amazing job. *FYI -- Yes, I did pay for my car being checked out at shell and also for a filter to be replaced too. I feel as though 90% of the time car shops take advantage of this lack of car knowledge for young women and overcharge you or tell you you need a service when you don't. I had the worst experience here with the mechanic shop. They tried to replace the brake pads, and didn't even tell me that the rotors were cracking and that's why there was a noise. I didn't even need pads, but they just replaced them anyways. When I took it to another mechanic, he found the problem right away. Shell would not even talk to me about the service they did, they even hung up the phone on me. Worst place ever to take your vehicle for service. Will never go back. read more

I rarely write reviews, unless they really deserve it. By far the best customer service you can get. They get things done quickly, honestly, and correctly! Kelly is pretty much always there and AWESOME! Every time I've gone in, they found time to help me out immediately. They didn't charge me the ridiculous "labor" or "diagnostic" fees that all other auto shops charge even if your car is running fine. Being a woman, I hate when men try to take advantage of me at auto repair shops because they think I don't know about cars... but they've never done that once here in the two years that I've been coming. Do not go to the service station, those people are ripped off. They claim they are BMW certified but they are really not. I took my BMW there and those people think I have no idea about cars, they charged me 130 for the oil change when they quoted me 85 over the phone. Then they always look for ways to tell you your car need more service and they will basically try to suck you dry before you walk out the door. These people are a bunch of dishonest bastards. Kelly at the service center is very honest and polite. I took my old Mercedes to him because it had a check engine light on. I didn't have an appointment but he was able to check it out for me right away and give me a recommendation. He also checked the oil for me. There wasn't much for him to fix so he sent me on my way. I love this place! I've been bringing my 1992 Mercedes wagon here for almost a year now. Previously I was taking it somewhere else where I felt like they were only really taking care of the symptom and not the problem. That's not the case at Playa Vista Shell! Kelly is a superstar and has literally saved me from feeling like its time to trade in the old wagon (it has 250,000 on the clock). He's Mr Mercedes! He knows them inside and out. All the issues that I've come to them with have been resolved same day and at a very reasonable price. He even managed to bring my a/c back to life! DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE! These guys are crooks! My car was here for a total of 7 days on two separate occasions with an A/C problem. When it was all said and done, nothing was fixed and they were dumbfounded as to what was causing my problem. They charged me $200 for a relay that they "replaced." I took it to another shop the next day where my car was fixed in three hours. All the car needed was a new relay (the one that Shell said they replaced, but actually didn't). I returned to Shell with the old relay in hand and called them out on their scam. After some hell was raised, I got my $200 refunded. AVOID THIS JOKE OF AN AUTO REPAIR GARAGE AT ALL COSTS! read more

The Service Manager Kelly Murphy is a master with a passion and a love in performing excellent service and repair to whatever ails your car. He has tons of experience and was able to quickly determine that my tire could not be plugged with certain fast checks he made which saved me valuable time trying to get to work and although he did not have the exact tire to replace mine, he went above the call of duty by ordering me a new one and getting it there within minutes. He also was so supportive in going that extra mile by taking the time to fully explain the situation where my tire had a disastrous failure from the long term stress from an out of alignment condition so that I would not suffer future issues. Going to a new auto shop is always intimidating and easy to be skeptical with garages reputations and me being a single girl. I had the best experience and will never go to another garage. Ever! Consistently great experience with these people here. No problem too big, too small, or ridiculously dumb. I have taken four separate cars to them for various issues over the years and both maintenance and repairs have always gone well. Prices are reasonable and they finish within the timeframe they tell you up front. Of late I'm having a nightmarish issue with the emissions software. They are always honest about whether they can fix it or not, have not charged me a dime for diagnosis, and everything they have fixed stayed that way. When it is something outside of their expertise or better handled by the dealer (like my computer software update), they simply advise me on the next step. I used to be a longtime customer. Maurice and crew provided exemplary service to me and my friends for many years-- until the last year or so. Recently, we brought in our Honda to have the timing belt replaced. It wasn't broken-- just maintenance. The truck was running great. We got a call that "something happened" during the timing belt replacement, and that they'd need to keep the truck a few more days. After asking what happened, I was told the valves were gone, it was their fault, but they assured us that they'd make it right. We got the car back, paid our bill ($hundreds) for the original job. There was no charge for the valve job. After getting the car home it was clear that the truck wasn't right. When my wife brought it back to the shop- telling them it wasn't running right, they told her there was nothing wrong. They wouldn't even acknowledge there was a problem, leaving my wife feeling unheard, and unbelieved. We ended up taking it to the dealer, where they absolutely found issues. After an additional $800 at the dealer, the car finally runs right. I can no longer recommend this shop to my friends and family. read more
