We came if a cheeky dessert and a perfectly delicious cup of Jasmine tea. Even thought it was super quiet and almost closing time , we were served with a smile, did not feel rush and the food was beautifully presented. Our respective tea pots got refilled as much as we wanted and I was most pleasantly surprised by the yumminess of my chocolate lava cake. I must come back for more.

First time at Shelby's. Originally opened many years prior to the pandemic by a local resident and her daughter, I understand Shelby's is under new ownership with a great menu. At lunch yesterday, we received both a special's menu and regular lunch menu. Entree selections ranged from $16-high $20s with salads, quesadillas, sandwiches, etc. We ordered two of the specials which were salad of grilled chicken/grilled peaches/goat cheese/avocado/tomato and assorted lettuce with a light Dijon vinaigrette. Very light and delicious; a definite re-order if available again. We also had a pulled pork quesadilla with a side salad and freshly made salsa. Friend said it was very tasty too. Indoor and outdoor seating is plentiful. Service is friendly and parking can be validated (if you park in the garage under Theatre Square shops and restaurants). Otherwise, street parking is only for 1 or 2 hours maximum. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed my first visit lunch here. I was dining alone. I felt welcomed and the customer service was great. Attentive but not intrusive. (I had had a particularly grueling work day the day prior (7:45a-11:45p) and had to go into the office early the next day. I was a zombie and feeling low. On the way home I thought of the convenience of Shelby's at the Square. I'm so glad I went in. It was especially pleasant to find Flowers Chardonnay by the glass. I knew I had found a good spot. I indulged and ordered the west coast carbonara. It was a carb day for sure! The food was savory, creamy and comforting I only wish the Parmesan on top was freshly grated or shaved. Overall though just what I needed to turn my frown upside down.

Poor atmosphere and the signature Chinese chicken salad is some lettuce leaves with some boiled shredded chicken. Not good.

The food in this place was good but the service was so bad at some point I felt like it was a torture. The place was kind of empty not too many table were full but the waiter just would be gone for long and wouldn't come ask if we needed anything. The wait between meals like appetizer and main course was so long not because of kitchen but the server was just gone for long at a stretch. I had to ask him to come and same with after our meal was finished he never came to ask if we needed dessert, The waiter on other table saw us a few times and he finally came and gave us a menu. I really wanted to try a dessert but was scared this will again take us another hour to even get the server to come and get our order. On top of really slow service there was an older man who sat in the table next to us and kept talking to us looking at our food. He literally was asking me if you support trump do you like him. He kept telling us how he knew the owner and his wife and has come to this place for 100 times over years and everything is free for him here. This was all ok but I wasn't sure why he wasn't letting us eat our meal in peace. At some point he became a little racist as well, when we tried to take our food goto he told us i won't take this goto. I never take this goto. And then was like ohh you are from India and it felt so uncomfortable. He was like do you watch fox, I watch fox. Then was like I have cable, I don't try to save money. Do you have cable.. omg never ending interrogation and also kept looking at our food and table and what we were eating and kept commenting on that. I understand this restaurant might have some old and familiar guest or important people come to this place but they should understand other guest should still be able to enjoy there meal without being bothered by the people who are known. It was one of my worse restaurant experiences, the service and on top of this man who somehow is VIP guest at this place made it so hard for us to have our date night meal in peace. I literally tried to run away from this place. This was almost 2 hrs long ordeal. We came a little before 6 and left at 8 and I never eat for that long. I'll NEVER go to this place again even though I loved the food.

I cannot believe that for the price you pay for a bread, they would serve this. I also ordered a black coffee, but it tasted like it had been sitting there since the morning and tasted really nasty. I asked to have a hot tea instead. Food was good. We ordered spaghetti, carbonara, some chicken dish, and a grilled salmon. All the food tasted delicious and we cleaned out the carbonara and spaghetti. After we ate our dinner, they gave my son-in-law a slice of tiramisu with a lighted candle. Overall, it was a pleasant evening and we enjoyed our food (except for the garlic bread). I'd like to see them do me good and give me a nice garlic bread the next time I eat here.

As soon as you walk in, you're hit with the smell of a campfire from the oven. The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous with an Art Deco design. The ambiance is cozy but elevated. Benedict (buttermilk biscuit, dungeness crab cakes, marinated swiss chard & beet greens, herbed hollandaise, poached eggs & mixed greens): I'm not a huge benedict person because they can feel heavy, but this one was fantastic. I loved the textures and flavors of the crab cakes pairing with the greens and vegetables. It felt balanced and not too creamy or exhausting to eat. It definitely stands out from the run-of-the-mill brunch benedict. Vegetable Hash (roasted sweet potatoes, garnet yams, sunchokes, cauliflower, cremini mushrooms, celery root & onion, savoy spinach & poached eggs): This was also delicious and also set itself apart from the standard brunch hash. I loved the different vegetables in it besides being just potatoes and onions. The mushrooms and root vegetables worked really well together. Everything was well-seasoned. I'm glad we ended up choosing these dishes even though neither were my original top choices (I decided on the menu with my friend). It made me feel like you can choose anything and it'd be a banger. We were quite full from these dishes, and we forget we also ordered beignets to come out last. They were fluffy and mostly air (but not in a bad way). The service throughout the meal was good. We were checked on from time-to-time and our waters were refilled, although I wish the water glasses were a little bigger. One small thing to note was that we were given the check while we were still eating, even though the restaurant was still seating people despite it being close to closing time. Unsure if/why we were rushed like this. Overall, this was a memorable brunch spots I've been to in the Bay (dare I say one of the best?). We left smelling like a campfire. I would recommend it.

The place seems a little fancy. We were seated and 1 waiter brought us waters. (You have a choice of tap or bottled sparking water) I picked tap. Another waiter came by to give us menus and bread. Bread was good and the butter that came with it spread easily on the bread. (It wasn't hard, just out of the fridge) And then another waitress came to take our order. I got the cheeseburger and fries. Food came out at a decent time. It was very tasty. Our waters were constantly filled. It was warm that day and they had the ceiling fans cranked up. There was a lot of shade, but some areas had a lot of sun poking through. I'm a people watcher and noticed that a lot of their patrons order dishes to share. I'd definitely do that the next time. The waiter packed our leftovers and cleared the table. Then we waited...and waited for someone to bring us our check. It seemed to be at least 15-20 min before we got it. For some reason, we had multiple waiters waiting on our table. The next time we come, I hope to be able to sit inside. I was looking at the open kitchen and huge bar from the patio. For bdays and celebrations they bring out a slice of cake with a huge sparkler. I wanted to try the butter cake but I was too full. First off, this sandwich is massive, so be sure that you come here on an empty stomach. These beef meatballs are seasoned to perfection and bursting with flavor. The balls are covered in their red sauce with provolone and Grana Padano, which gives it that nutty and salty flavor that pairs extremely well with the meatballs and baguette. All the juices and cheese just get soaked up to perfection. The baguette bread they use is supplied by La Farine, which is just a few meters away from each other. Just putting out there that La Farine is hands down one of the best bakeries in Oakland, so it makes sense that this sandwich would be so dang good.
