Today was my birthday, and my family made a dinner reservation at another place, but I asked them to cancel it because I would love to go to Shawarma King tonight. FYI, I live in San Francisco, but I've been following this place on Instagram for a while. As soon as we walked in, we heard a warm greeting from the counter area. As I said before, no matter where we are, we all represent our businesses, cultures, and hospitality individually. Mr. Khalid's contagious positive energy will give you a happy welcome to the dining hall. Since it was my first time, I asked a few questions about the menu, and the response was very helpful and with kind suggestions. We ordered Chicken shawarma wraps and sides, of course, Hummus and Cauliflower with tahini and extra hot sauce. For drinks, we ordered a yogurt drink and soda. Chicken Shawarma was deliciously good. The chicken marinated was perfect. We loved each bite. The cauliflower had a unique taste and was served with tahini. The food was savory and good. I knew what I was expecting and it delivered. I had the mixed plate. I thought the portions of chicken and beef were skimpy. The rice was majority of the meal, but they still delivered on taste. Service was okay. I believe there is a culturally different way to judge service. I say that because as an American going into an establishment that I'm not familiar with their food, I think I'll be viewed differently. Not so much negatively but as unaware of certain customs. I say all that to say, I expect a "Chick-fil-A" greeting with overwhelming eye contact and cheerfulness. That's not a realistic expectation. The Establishment itself was large enough to sit and enjoy. I really enjoy the fact that they had chargers hanging from the wall so that if you needed a phone charger you have the opportunity to charge your phone. Another thing that I enjoyed was being able to see my food prepared. The ambiance is casual. Nothing special. Parking is not plentiful. I'm sure during rush hour it's tough to park. New ownership took over and really made a complete turnaround with the service, the taste, and the quality. As someone who has worked in food service, I can assure you that the quality of food is by far the best I have ever had here in the USA. I really try hard not to rate halal places low because we need them to drive, and I'm always on the lookout to try and help out local places and I want them to prosper, but unfortunately this is gonna have to be the last time I come to Shawarma King. I've been coming here for over 10 years when I used to go to school in the South side, and so I was excited to go there again after a while and grab a quick bite to eat, but the Kibbe was soft and not crunchy (although I will say the meat inside of it tasted good) but it was definitely not freshly cooked. The bread on the wrap was just okay, and it was not very full, felt like the meat was skimped on. The shawrma just was not up to par on how they were before, and how other places are in the area. Fries were fine. The only reason they don't have one star and got two stars, is because I called my order ahead and at least had my order ready, unlike many times before, when they would take a lot longer to get the food ready and I would have to wait inside. I used to be more forgiving on the wait time because at least the food would be fresh and delicious. That is not the case anymore. You also have to ask for napkins, sauce, every little thing and they don't just give it to you. And for these reasons, I'm out. read more

Not a bad lil casual place. It's quick and tasty, perfect for to go. They are counter service. I've been here a few times with mixed results. If you come when it's busy, you get nice hot fresh food. If you come when it's not so busy, you will get barely warm food. I wish they would cook to order when it's not busy instead of serving cold previously prepared food. Prices are good. Amazing food! I can see why they are called Shawarma King. They have some of the BEST shawarma in all of Houston. On this visit, I ordered the Mix Shawarma Sandwich and the Kafta Plate. It didn't taste fresh at all. I ordered the small eggplant and it was served cold. The gyro sandwich was pretty awful. The meat seemed like it was frozen pieces from Costco. The tzatziki isn't even homemade. It's from a bucket. This was definitely a very disappointing visit. It's nothing like it used to be to be. Don't let this unassuming restaurant deter you, as they deliver fresh, delicious food. I was a little confused at first since it appears like a cafeteria style eatery (since you order where the food is displayed) but they tell you to go sit down after you order and they serve you the food. I've had chicken shawarma sandwich at many a Houston joints (including Fadis, Phoenicia in downtown, Arpi's) and Shawarma King truly owns up to its name. The meat is flavorful and moist, a praiseworthy feat considering that shawarma meats are continuously heated on a stick all day. The amount of sauce is also perfectly balanced, and I love that they serve it with purple pickled radishes. Their chicken kebab is also extremely moist and not overly charred. So so good. Mousska is another must for eggplant lovers. The pistachio baklava here is also amazing. Super super buttery and not overly sweet. I have catered from here, I have brought out of town guests here all the time, I have brought my coworkers here and I have always told all my friends how much I love the shawarma here. However the weather channel says it shawarma up later on. The tragedy is, every time I am in here for dinner it's either empty or half empty. It's a freaking crime. With prices this good and food this good it should be packed out the door 24 7. It isn't, but crap like Denny's and Chili's is? I'm ashamed to be human. What to get: Chicken Shawarma and Babaghanoush. What else: Good falafel, lovely service, and perhaps the best value prices in town. Certainly Houston has a good selection of excellent Middle Eats, and this is one of the very best examples of it. Like Barbar and Al Aseel, this is fast food-meets-good food, somewhat late night food, and most importantly, absolutely delicious food. I've only had 3 dishes here, but if those 3 are anything to go by, then everything here is excellent. One is the Falafel = top marks. Not my fave dish in general but very good here. Another is the ridiculously good Chicken Shawarma sandwich. Probably the best of its kind in town, and one of the tastiest I've had anywhere. Like all good Lebanese-style shawarmas, it's filled with juicy heavenly garlic, some great pickles and veggies, and all in a sumptuous wrap. I don't usually like my kebabs in wraps (I prefer pitas) but this wrap is as good as anything Tupac Shakur ever came out with. Best of all, perhaps, is some of the most delicious, juicy, sumptuous, eggplant-y babaghanoush I've had anywhere. Oily and dreamy, it's a must-try. The prices here are bargain basement, rock bottom. You can get a feast for under $20 for 2 people. It's remarkable and commendable. Service is also absolutely wonderful.
