My boyfriend and I stumbled upon Shaughnessy's Irish Pub on a Sunday night when most places nearby were already closed--and it turned out to be a happy accident! This was my second time since my last review here. Two things I've observed since... the servers are incredibly friendly but it is pretty slow in there, a good thing to keep in mind. They do make great drinks. The nachos were okay, they came with chicken which wasn't on the menu description. The menu is limited before a crunch game, nachos were listed at $11, which I ordered. I ordered the fish and chips and it came in this Etsy styled fry basket with what looks like food safe paper printed like newspaper. The fries were on the bottom, and the fish was on the top both fresh out of the fryer. The problem was the fish was crispy on the top side, but because they stacked everything in the basket, all the steam and moisture from the fries, softened the underside of the fish and made the fries limp. It was probably the worst fish and chips I've ever had. They should auction off all their fry basket trinkets and buy bigger plates and just plate up the dang food. They're not serving the stuff out on the street like London is and it's not newspaper so don't try to be something you are not. read more

The PUB NACHOS -- Tortilla chips, shredded chicken, jalapeno, pico, black beans, queso, shredded Monterey jack, sour cream, are actually pretty amazing. After a long drive, having the simple GRILLED CHEESE DELUXE -- Sourdough, provolone, bacon, tomato, was very satisfying. However, on a second visit on a day to hot with not enough energy to find somewhere else new, having the French dip sandwich (which doesn't seem to be on the web menu) was a disappointment. This place is only good for drinks and the bar. The reason for two stars is because the food was just terrible, had small servings, and was overpriced - that deserves one star (read on for why they get a star extra). We ordered pretzel pops and a garden salad with chicken. Very simple, should have been a slam dunk. Nope. The pretzel pops were colder than room temperature. They tasted stale and did not have a typical soft pretzel coating. They didn't even look like soft pretzels. The salad was wilted, not fresh and the chicken breast on top had no flavor at all. For the salad, they didn't even have any red wine vinegar available or balsamic. The salad was served on what looked like a tapas plate. Super small. They had a nice beer selection, but you had a to wait a long time to get it. The blueberry lemonade drink was good. The staff was definitely overwhelmed, which I would be happy to forgive, but the food was terrible. The staff tried the best they could to get to the huge crowd. They deserved a nice tip. I've been by here when out at the bars, usually just in passing. Its unique location, kind of remotely around the corner from where the other bars start, makes it the designated bar for people staying at the Marriott, and people attending big events at the Oncenter. Outside of those rushes, it's a good place to hang out. We went here this year for parade day. The parade itself was the least crowded we've ever seen, but every bar in armory square was just as full as ever. It was starting to get dark, which means we'd been at it for about five hours amid the crowds of shouting green people and we needed a tactical retreat. Without JRyans, we did some quick figuring and thought this would be just far enough from the action to order bar food without getting laughed at. They were pretty busy, but we were able to get a table right away. We kept the Bud Lights flowing and ordered some food to keep us going. They had a limited menu for parade day. Their menu is already pretty short, so this was just bullet points. Wings and Reubens though, at least they didn't mess with the essentials. The food took about an hour to arrive, but that's not really a shocker on a day like this. We loved everything we got. The wings were crispy without being burnt. We even separately pointed out that the celery and bleu cheese were specifically refreshing. There was something great about the fries. I swear it wasn't the alcohol talking, we all raved about the fries and agreed they were the best. They had that perfect crispy yet soft texture to them. And on theme with the rest, we also loved how the Reuben was cooked. Word of the day: crispy! The bread was grilled crispy, but not hard, and the meat was cooked just enough to hold up against the soft, soundly constructed layer of sauerkraut, dressing and cheese on top. The pricing here is a bit higher than the bars we typically spend more time in, but at least as far as the food goes, we got the best we could have hoped for. There were three of us, and with two Reubens, the 12 wings, and the beers we ordered in just over an hour, the final bill came to about $100. From this trip, we can confirm that one, the food is great. And two, this is sufficiently far from the parade crowd to have a slightly quieter conversation while sitting down to some bar food. read more

Restaurant looked cozy. It wasn't busy. Loved seeing the outside seating. I sat at the bar. After a long day I decided at get a cocktail to unwind and order food to take to my room. I ordered a burger and fries and order of wings. My meal was very good. I even went back after Checkout to order Fire Wings to take home to hubby. Only issue I had with Shaunessy was the bar. I ordered a cocktail after I checked into the hotel while waiting for my food. It seemed very weak. (I drink about once a year on occasion so shouldn't take me long to feel effects.) I ended up ordering three cocktails during my sitting, which my last was a Long Island Ice Tea. I know lots of alcohol are in those, so maybe I'll get my buzz. When I tasted It it didn't taste right and it was very light looking. I was asked if my drink was good and I shared my concern about the taste. She made me another one and while doing so shared that she forgot to add two ingredient, but didn't think I would've noticed. (Wow!) When she gave me the new drink it was right. My question is: Why would you try passing off a drink you know you didn't make properly? It wasn't even busy! One other person was at the bar with me and one person sitting at a table. I wanted to take my partner out on a great date night, and the female bartender who worked this evening was by far the rudest, unprofessional, dishonest bartender ever. She was so bad that she ruined our entire rest of the evening by screaming at my partner when my partner called her out on actively skipping her multiple times, making eye contact with her several times at that (while my partner had her card in hand), serving people who came in close to 20 to 30 minutes after we did. When my partner calmly told her that she has been waiting close to 30 minutes and that she was serving other people before her, the bartender raised her voice, causing other patrons to look at us, and claimed she was working the line which obviously was a lie due to the fact she served multiple parties on the left and of the right of my partner. There is never an excuse for a bartender to lie to a customer or more importantly make customers feel bad. After the bartender finished screaming at us, we proceeded to leave the establishment, and we will never be back and I will make sure to tell anyone I know to never come here. I strongly advise anybody who reads this to never frequent this place if you are looking for a halfway decent experience because the way that we were treated tonight, not only ruined our experience there and obviously we will never set foot in there again, but it even ruined our entire evening after that, the bartender was and is that bad. read more

Went to Shaughnessys Irish Pub for the 1st time the other night. First of all, it is a gorgeous pub. It's light and clean and very modern but cozy. The booth we sat in was huge and comfortable. I ordered a Blue Moon Belgian White which was nice and cold and delicious. For dinner I ordered the pub burger. A lot of people have said they have a great burger. The taste of the meat was delicious and it was cooked perfectly medium, just how I ordered it. Other than that, it was nothing special. Nothing particularly wrong with it other than it was a too soft type bun that was falling apart. But the burger as a whole did not excited me to come back for it again. The fries were not crisp and were over salted. The service was great and I really loved the atmosphere. Ed Riley, the Marriott Syracuse hotel developer, had an Irish setter who was known to occasionally lap up some beer. The dog's name was Shaughnessy Michael O'Toole, and his name and likeness was bestowed upon one of downtown's newest pubs and restaurants, and his face and silhouette can be found throughout the space. Some of the the menu is even dog-inspired: the wings come in two sizes, pup bowl or big dog. The onion rings are called collars and battered in a black-and-tan mix. Other apps include pretzel pups and "poochtine," the pub's take on fries, cheese curds and gravy. But the new bar in the Marriott Syracuse Downtown celebrates a local sports history as well that goes well beyond Syracuse University football's Ernie Davis and his revered jersey. The pub has Paul Seymour's personal trophy from the Syracuse Nationals' only NBA championship. There are photos of bowling and baseball and the old MacArthur Stadium. Then there's the floor. It's the actual oak that the Nats once played on at the Onondaga County War Memorial. The center court logo - the one the Nats won on in 1955 in Game 7 - is hanging on the wall. The bar itself is massive. It has four sides and can seat about 40. Chuck Anthony, the hotel's director of restaurant operations, said he thinks it's a contender for the city's longest bar. My two buddies and I have been meaning to try this place out, and this weekend presented the perfect opportunity, as we were going to a WWE show at the War Memorial, only a block away, so we decided to grab some dinner beforehand. The space itself is beautiful. Wooden floors and accents, nice big booths, clean and modern. We were sat immediately, as the place wasn't packed at 530 on a Saturday. We were given our menus, which are on heavy wooden boards, and the first thing I noticed were how few options there were. Outside of appetizers and salads, there are literally only 6 entree options. VERY small, VERY basic menu. We ordered an order of chicken wings as an appetizer, as we're all wing fans. They were brought quickly, and had a good hot sauce on them. They were HUGE also, but because of that, also weren't done to our likeness. Not bad at all though. My buddies both went with the daily burger special of a portabello mushroom burger, while I chose their grilled chicken sandwich. Again, everything was brought relatively quickly, and while everything was ok, we weren't blown away. We stopped at Shaugnessy's after my friends' wedding for some afterparty drinks and laughs. Like the neighboring Eleven Waters, Shaugnessy's is located on the ground floor of the Marriott in downtown Syracuse. While the former is a restaurant with a bar attached, this establishment has more of a sports bar feel. Shaugnessy's is fairly new - the bar is quite large and comes full circle so there are a lot of stools to sit and drink. Additionally, there are some long tables and a separate area with table service; we were seated at one of the long tables just off the bar. The place was packed - with the hotel hosting four weddings this weekend and six wedding parties staying at the hotel, you can imagine how crowded it was on a Saturday night. I can't really review on the drinks because I just had water (the thirst was real). We did, however, order some junk food which I can comment on. The nachos were really good - lots of cheese, beans and shredded chicken mmmm. We also had homemade style potato chips with four different dipping sauces. Its the kind of food that just looks okay on a normal day but after a long day of ceremonies, photos, and dancing you're just shoving it down your throat like there's no tomorrow.
