Faegan's is the standard for "older" visitors to the SU campus. Over the years, they've evolved from a beer bar for seniors to a pub that offers elevated food (the poutine rocks) as well as a great craft beer selection. Also a fine offering of whiskeys and scotch. When I visit campus, I'll sit at the bar, chat up the bartenders, watch sports, have some great food and conversation with strangers. It has a very authentic Irish pub feel. Late night on weekends the music gets a little crazy loud but could just be the last time I was there. Either way, they have my business when I am on campus. My son and I were in Syracuse for a couple of days checking out the University. We saw Faegan's and it looked like a traditional Irish pub. We also noticed how busy it looked inside, so we thought it would be a good place to grab a drink and bite to eat. If you are simply looking for a place to drink, this is your place. Lots of 20-somethings hanging out in the bar and plenty of options for beers and mixed drinks at reasonable prices. Everyone was also very friendly, including the bartender which always comes as a shock if, like us, you live closer to NYC. However, if you are looking for a place to eat as well, move along. They did not have buffalo wings so I ordered some chicken fingers and nachos. The chicken fingers were like large spongy chicken mcnuggets, served room temperature at best. The nachos were basically cheese whiz on chips with ground chicken. If you are drunk and need to get some quick food in your stomach, I suppose this would pass. Lack of stars is the handful of precooked nachos served slightly warm with soggy chips $6 and 4 precooked chicken tenders rendered dry from standing under a heat lamp that barely keeps them warm. The menu wasn't large but they had enough of a variety in flavors to accommodate anyone. The portion sizes were filling and service was quick. Only real downside here was the space. Its location on Marshall Street is extremely convenient and allows for only a short walk from campus. A group of friends and I went to the restaurant for an early dinner and were very happy with our experience. The atmosphere is very inviting and the service is fantastic. Our waitress was very friendly and quick to bring us anything we needed. On top of all of that, the restaurant offers a delicious array of sandwiches, burgers, salads, and other pub favorites. I ordered the Praise Burger with a side of fries and was extremely pleased with my meal. Although the portion was a bit larger than I would have like, I thought the burger was delicious as were the fries. I would definitely consider ordering this meal again. This place is often the last stop of the night during most conferences at SU, before returning to the Sheraton. The atmosphere is lively, and the bartenders are attentive. The one bartender was patient enough to let me ask him about his paw print tattoo (which I learned was his late dog-pal's actual print, so that every step he takes, they take together...pretty beautiful) and filled up my water glass 3x. There is art on the walls that punch up the pub atmosphere, and lots of tvs so that you can catch your favorite sports game or political convention. The bar itself is gorgeous, with hammered metal and polished wood. There is a huge table in the side room that looks like a fun place for a large group to gather, and high-top tables gathered near the bar area to move and mingle. The drinks are pretty cheap (think beers on tap around $5-6 each and ciders for around $6-7). Overall, the bar has heart. I heard that Wednesdays is "Flip Night" where the bartender flips a quarter and if you guess the correct end of heads or tails, you earn yourself a bargain of a drink special. It's in the middle of the activity of SU and is worth a stop on the way back to the Sheraton. read more

I ended up at Faegan's twice in the span of one day, on a three-day trip to Syracuse... the first time at a recommendation of a friend for lunch. I had the fish tacos with fresh cod and a side slaw of curried sweet potatoes... with a Sam Adams cherry wheat (on tap) and maraschino cherry for good measure. The second time was after dinner for a nightcap... and by 'nightcap' in a college town, of course I mean a pitcher of beer enjoyed in the standing-room only raucous atmosphere of a Friday night post-basketball scrimmage (or something). When it isn't construction season, it's an excellent spot for lunch. Daily specials are featured for food. Operating hours vary in the summer, with the university out of classes. I stopped in for a quick lunch a few weeks back. Faegan's looked like the prototypical Irish Pub with a lot of wood trim and decently sized bar. It seems like a popular local lunch spot, since the restaurant was pretty full on a Monday. They have an extensive menu along with a pretty solid list of draft beer. Between 2 people, we shared the Reuben Sandwich, Fish and Chips and the Fall Salmon Salad. Both the Reuben Sandwich and Fish & Chips were solid, with generous portions. However the Salmon Salad fell short. The greens and beets were not fresh. It appeared and tasted like those ingredient had been sitting in the fridge for a week at least. Beets were discolored and dry. I think I would have given Faegan's 4 stars if it were not for the gross salad. Anyways, it seems like a decent restaurant and I would come back. read more

I never completed Beer Tour on Tuesdays. You get a passport and have to drink all the beers on tap. It's a mission that clearly I got distracted by one that I enjoyed. Flip Night is insanely popular. My expectations for the "cafe & pub" closest to a large university could best be summed up as: stale beer and lousy food. Too often places with that kind of location utility only just barely as good as they have to be and not one bit better. You've been to one like that - with a little luck you've actually forgotten its name. Very underrated as far as campus bars go. Faegan's offers three cool nights: Beer Tour (try beers around the world) Flip Night (flip a coin for free beer) and Senior Sunday. But it offers more than that. The food is awesome. The nachos are crazy good, and the pulled pork and fish and chips are my favorites. This is the nicest bar on campus with an awesome beer selection. A good place to have lunch. Walked in a little after five and was almost instantly greeted with a waiter who quickly answered yes when I asked if his restaurant was still serving lunch/dinner. The food and drinks were served quickly and the burger I got was very good starting with a lightly toasted brioche bun with meat prepared exactly the way I asked for it, crisp lettuce and American cheese. The only complaints I would have is that the burger was not big enough, certainly for the 6.48 it cost with tax and that only a limited menu was featured the day I went there, the only other selection I was interested in being a chicken sandwich (which I admittedly thought looked good and one of my friends confirmed). read more

A popular pub for the McCartney performance at the Carrier Dome. So this is probably not the best time to review this pub. They were swamped and with a waiting time of over two hours before seating. Communication of eating at bar vs no eating at bar or ordering for that matter was conflicting from different staff. So no real review here except for two cocktails we ordered....One a gin and tonic the other vodka gimblet. Gin and tonic spot on but gimblet was a little sour but palatable. Faegan's was my absolute favorite bar as an undergrad at 'Cuse. It's not your typical college bar - which is the exact reason I liked it. It's *not* crazy crowded and filled with disgusting sweaty, slobbery, skanky drunks like some of the other bars on M Street (ahem, rhymes with "bucks"). You usually don't have to push your way through people, getting groped in the process as you would at other places. And there is a place to hang your coats, which is usually a necessity in Syracuse. Faegan's has a great selection of beers on tap, more than any other bar near 'Cuse. I spent a good number of nights here my senior year. Weeknights and weekends included. Sometimes it can be a bit tricky to find a place to sit, so I'd suggest going a bit earlier than the normal crowd if you're planning on getting a table for a larger group. I'd highly recommend both the Beer Tour or Flip Night. For Beer Tour, $15 + 40 beers gets your name on a plaque up in the restaurant and a Faegan's tshirt emblazoned with Ben Franklin's famous quote and the Guinness bird. It's a fun task to complete with friends throughout the semester. I was pretty successful on Flip Night; you call the right side of the coin and you get your beer for free! The senior toast near the end of the spring semester is also a very fond memory of mine. Everyone was given a glass of champagne which was quickly followed by the singing of the Chancellor Shaw-banned fight song. The food is also topnotch. I've eaten here many times and salads, sandwiches, and burgers are all excellent. Now that I think about it, I haven't found another bar that makes me feel the way Faegan's does. A great (if crowded) spot to grab a bite and a drink before the SU game! We had to wait a while for a table, he said 30 min, I think it was only about 20 which we happily waited by standing at the bar. I had a cider made from one of the well known local apple farms which I think is a really nice touch. When we were seated, our waitress took a little bit to come over to take our order but it was mobbed in there so no big deal because she was a sweetheart. She and my friend bonded over their elephant tattoos haha We shared a plate of delish nachos which had white queso, beans, and pico. They were mighty tasty. I just got a bowl of chicken noodle which was good, nothing to write home about but it hit the spot on a cold night! Faegan's is located in the smaller and rowdier of Syracuse's two major nightlife districts, Marshall Street, aka SU Hill. However, this is the least rowdy pub in this district. From lunch time through dinner time (Monday - Saturday), this is a quiet pub with waiter/waitress service. Outside seating is available seasonally. Around 9pm out goes the cafe and in comes the pub (including Sundays). On some nights during the academic year (particually Wednesdays and Thursdays), this place will be packed by mostly graduate students and older undergrads. However, a good number of middle-aged town folk will also hang out here. By far the largest selection on the SU Hill, and one of the largest in all of Syracuse, Faegans has over forty beers on tap. Wine and liquor is also quite popular. Here's why Wednesday and Thursday are especially popular: Wednesday is "flip night"... When you order a beer, the bartender will flip a quarter. If you call it correctly, your beer is free. Unless you're very unlucky, this ends up reducing your bill significantly. Thursday is what used to be $2 beer night. Apparently the prices have gone up a little, but many beers are still $2 (as of May 2007). As Thursday is definitely the new Friday at SU, this place will be packed during the academic year on this night. If you happen to be out on a Sunday in Syracuse and every bar is empty, you might as well give Faegans a shot, since it's "Senior Sundays" have become a tradition. The staff is extremely friendly and the music is good as well. The signature song is "Sweet Caroline," which is played towards the end of the night with much fanfare. read more

This is my favorite bar in Syracuse. I love all the hardwood in this place. The bar itself is beautiful. You can basically get any kind of beer or drink that you want. It is a great place to meet up with friends for a drink This place isn't his about the drinks. You have got to try the food. The burgers are pretty good. The French onion soup is amazing. Happy hour brews and good bar food! Drafts are a dollar off until 7 and they have a pretty awesome selection (including a wide selection of seasonals). Their burgers are consistently good and will always recommend. I tried the drunken Reuben the other day and it was the perfect amount of sauerkraut to Russian dressing on top of delicious corned beef. The one meal I wouldn't recommend is poutine. I got it twice and each time it was cold and we had to ask them to microwave it. I even tried to get creative and add chicken but it was rubbery and distracting from the cheesy goodness. I stopped in the other day with a friend. We both brought work, and because it was Spring Break and most of the students were away, the staff was very kind and let us spend several hours at a table. We had a few drinks and lunch. I ordered a specialty sandwich, the Turkey, Apple, and Cheddar. It comes on very crunchy bread -- almost too crunchy, actually, as it cut the roof of my mouth in several places! Ouch! It also comes with honey mustard and apple butter. Despite these additions, it was very dry and mostly tasteless. I probably shouldn't have expected much, but somehow I was disappointed. By far my favorite bar on the SU campus. They have good beer, music, and decent pub food. The salads were my favorite. I liked heading there because there was no need to worry about driving to and from Armory Square. The interior is what a college pub should be: comfortable, plenty of tables, booths, and seating outside (for the 2 days of the year in Syracuse that you can enjoy it). After you've had a few, be careful about the small step between the bar and the dining area. I still make a point to stop by when I'm back in town to visit the family. read more

Is this my last review of Syracuse? Oh no! But thank goodness it's for Faegan's, my favorite pub in the University area. What I love about Faegans is how involved it is with the students. My senior nights were spent here mingling amongst medical and law graduate students, seniors at FlipNight, Beer Tour, Senior Sundays(!) - all these great little weekly treats that makes this place really feel like a local hit even on an empty night. The bartenders are really nice (as long as you're nice back to them - and by that I mean not rude and handsy). They make drinks according to request and don't skimp on the alcohol - (damn those Long Islands are strong!) and are happy to accommodate, like when I ask for a Snakebite with Guiness instead of pale lager. There's so many beers on tap - start early in your 21s to finish the Beer Tour without feeling bloated. They come in 1/2 pints on Tuesday nights, and it's a win/lose situation. Not a lot of people (yay!) but tiny drinks for kind of a pricey number... I prefer Flip Night, where the stakes are high: You can come out drunk, and having only spent the $3 cover. If you're here for eating (and lucky enough to snag a table), the burgers, fries and spinach and artichoke dip are to die for. Feeling more peckish? Don't let the titles: Appetizer fool you. I worked nearby for about 6 months when we first moved to Syracuse and came here for lunch on average 2 times a week during that time. The food is just ok, but I like the vibe of the place as well as the people who work here, which is why I would come here so often. And, for being right by the University, it has a good non-student lunch crowd - probably due to the nearby hospital and medical offices. My go-to lunch was always the turkey club. Most times, it was good. However, the kitchen staff sometimes doesn't put much care into the food they turn out. So, sometimes the bread would be burnt and/or the fries would be soggy. The club is a lot of food for the cost, so the hubby and I would typically split it for lunch which is a nice money saver. Other things I have tried here include their french onion soup (pretty good), hamburger (often overcooked), daily tacos (generally good, but depends on the day), and pulled pork (not a big fan). The decor could use an uplift/makeover, as it feels a little old to me. And, if you come here with a large group during lunch time, expect to be here awhile! I've been here multiple times with my husband and his colleagues and it always takes forever to get our food. When you don't have time for a leisurely lunch break that can be a problem. I still do occasionally come here for lunch, likely because it was the first place my husband and I felt "at home" at when we moved to Syracuse.
