This place has a cool vibe. It is next to a surf/Skate Board shop. they offer 2 menus one is gluten free the other is regular food. First we ordered the Clam Chowder. this is where the meal started to turn south. This is not nor will it ever be a chowder. It is Clam Soup it is real thin and has not potatoes or flavor. I asked about the "soup" and the waitress said they don't use potatoes to keep it gluten free. "Would have been nice to know" We also ordered tacos and to be honest I can't tell you what kind they were there was 1 small slice of protein and handfulls of cabbage and onion (even though we ordered without onion) when we questioned about the lack of protein waitress said they never get complaints. My beer was warm, actually ever beer in the 7Devils tap was warm. Ended up going to bottled beer. I got halibut and chips... the fries were typical, the fish seemed to be out of a box or something. Got four pieces and all were same size and amount of battering. Bland in flavor, greasy and the fish wasn't flaky. My buddy got the rockfish and chips, he said my fish tasted better. We love SharkBites! My favorite thing to order are the chicken tacos, slaw style. Which are just as good as the Slaw Fish tacos, but I prefer chicken. Crab cakes were good, would have been great if they were bigger or there were more on the plate - the price seemed a little high for 3 smaller crab cakes. Oh boy. That was the best fish and chips I've ever had! The fish was firm and flaky. The beer batter was perfect and so tasty. Fresh cut fries and a nice lightly sweet coleslaw added to the experience. It's not a fancy place so we were comfortable in our hiking clothes. Good service, too. And a parking lot next door. Super cute place! They do a good job at social distancing and hand washing. Because it's a popular place and they socially distance the tables it can be a bit of a wait. But the staff is very friendly (pro tip, walk up to the bike counter as soon as you walk in). They seemed a little short handed so the service was slow (15 minutes to get water and 50 minutes to order) apparently the waitress didn't explain that they won't take your order at the table (even though the table next to us had there order taken at their table) so after you're seated you have to get up and walk to the counter to order. Super confusing and I don't think you can let a guest sit for 50 minutes without checking in. Not a good place for large groups, most tables are 4-6. Took 30 minutes to get our food. The food was good, I really wanted to give this place a 4-5 star review, but the service just wasn't there. I don't think it is their usual level of service, I think one of the owners/managers was having a family party. Anyway I would definitely love to give this place another try, maybe after they have had time to adjust to the relaxing of the COVID-19 rules and the summer crowds that are hungry for this type of place. read more

My last visit to SharkBites was indeed about six months ago; note I said last. Sorry for posting what you feel to be "too late", but I had just joined yelp and wanted to recognize all the restaurants I have visited in the last several months. If there is an expiration date on restaurant experiences, I haven't heard of it. This message is really unprofessional communication in my opinion. I recently (this month, lest you think I was talking about six months ago) had a group of 30 people to feed in Coos Bay, and in looking at my choices for local seafood, took them to High Tide Cafe. I also would give zero stars if I could. We stopped in for lunch and waited at the table. And waited. And waited. A group of middle aged bikers entered, were greeted, and given water immediately. Then their order was taken. Still, we waited. I finally assumed either we were being discriminated against for some reason, or they were completely out of their minds. After 20-25 minutes we left and went to Coney Station, stopping to mention to the person at the bar that we were leaving because no one had ever come to our table. She **laughed** stupidly. Tried this restaurant for two reasons: recommended by a co-worker and they specialize in fish and chips! So needless to say, I was very excited. The store itself has a somewhat weird setup. Taking up two storefronts, you enter on the cafe/counter/seafood display side. I was seated in the dining room/bar side, next door. I came a little late so the place was pretty empty, only 3 other tables occupied. I asked about snapper fish and chips (per my friend's rec) and was happy to hear they had them that day. I also order onion rings for an appetizer. I was given a choice of dipping sauces, chose the tartar sauce on the waiter's recommendation. When the rings came out, they looked like they had a lot of breading on them, but when I bit into it the coating was very light, crispy and airy. The tartar sauce was also very good, not too rich, hints of lemon and sour relish. Unfortunately, the deeper I got into the basket, the greasier it got, until the bottom where the remaining rings were literally sitting in pools of oil. Definitley could have used a few minutes on some newspaper to drain. My fish and chips came out a few minutes later. The fish, was wonderful, soft and flakey, a lot different from cod or halibut. The breading on the fish, however, was terrible! Not crisp at all, but soggy with oil. They could have used some time next to the rings on the newspaper. The french fries were good: fresh made, not too salty or oil. The cole slaw was also a surprise hit. It was mayonaise based, but not overly rich and the right amount of vinegar to cut through the greasiness. Red cabbage and carrots also added to the flavor. Service was so-so, althought they were very friendly, the waiter spent most of his time on the other half of the restaurant with his co-workers and did not come by too often to refill my ice tea. Value was only average too. The special order fish and chips was $12 for 6 to 7 small-medium pieces of fish, fries, and cole slaw, ot bad. But the onion rings were $5 for about 1/4 worth of onions. This is the restaurant that has finally prompted me to join Yelp! Wow!! I just had the absolutely BEST crab cakes here! The crab meat was so incredibly fresh & tender. The spices in the mix were perfect! And, while I am not a coleslaw fan, the slaw here was extremely tasty! My husband had Fish & Chips. The taste I got of the fish was really great! It melted in my mouth! The service was wonderful as well! The decor is upbeat and done well. We have just returned from the Big Island and were happy to find that Mai Tai's and Blue Hawaiians are available here! I will definitely order a Mai Tai next time. After watching Yelps on Shark Bites go all over the map for some time, it appeared that lately there was more good reviews than bad, which indicated this place was getting it's act together. My friend and I went today. He had fish tacos while I ordered up a basic burger and fries plus a Crater Lake Root Beer. His fish tacos should be called coleslaw tacos since hardly any fish was put in them! My burger, listed on the menu as a 1/3 pounder, was so overcooked that it shrunk up lots, was dry and left me with lots of bun after eating this pitifully prepared piece of meat. On the good side of the food: The fish tacos at least had a bit of taste and the sides that it came with were nice and also well presented on the plate. My fries were an old-fashioned Fifties-style made-in-the-restaurant type and I did enjoy them. The bun for the burger appeared to be some locally made bun that was actually decent. Neutral: The root beer came in a bottle instead of being served draft. Service has been the bete noir of Shark Bites in the past, with customers being untended to or getting their food late. Having the staff seat the people as they come in avoids anyone getting ignored who walks in the door. While we were there a moderate amount of folks were dining and the wait time for the food was average and certainly not excessive. This problem area appears to have been cleared up. Decor is fairly decent although the dining area could stand a brighter paint to lighten up the interior. The place is clean as are the bathrooms. You can segue right from the restaurant to the store where one can buy equipment for surfing and other water play, which is a plus in the unique fun factor department and it's quite appropriate for the Coos Bay area. For Shark Bites to rise higher in my rankings, they need to do a much better job in meat quantity and also in cooking it. Sharks love to eat meat and so do the customers! The potential is there for Shark Bites to become a fixture for both the locals and tourists. It would be nice to see them hit the mark instead of being the hit and miss affair they have been for so long. read more

My wife and I stayed in Coos Bay during our five-day drive along the West Coast from San Francisco to Seattle. The town is charming, and Shark Bites served us what was without doubt the best meal we had in between the two big cities. We were just about the only ones in the restaurant on a chilly Tuesday night, so service was fine and our waiter was jovial and laid-back (just like everyone else we met in Coos Bay). He was also very open about which dishes were made from local seafood and which weren't. The menu had five different kinds of fish tacos; I forget which kind I ordered but suffice it to say, they were the best fish tacos I've ever tasted, and I wolfed them down posthaste, along with the sides of black beans and chips and salsa. My wife said her clam strips were good but saved her biggest praise for the cole slaw, which she said was the best she'd ever eaten. Our cocktails were also tasty. Based on the other restaurants we considered, this is definitely the place to go in downtown Coos Bay. read more

So we happened upon this little gem, while staying in Coos Bay, for a funeral ;(. There were 6 of us, hungry for lunch. We were immediately seated with our drink order taken a few minutes later. I believe the owner waited on us, he was very attentive. I had their fish tacos. They were very fresh & full of flavor. Hubby & Dad had the burgers & fries, they were also very good. We also had the clam chowder, was a new recipe, was very fresh, rich & creamy. We also enjoyed the beer on tap! And the whiskey recommendation, well let's put it this way, is my Dad's new favorite whiskey! The atmosphere was casual, the price was right, and they are also kid friendly. We had clam chowder (very good with tender clams) and Caesar salad (good-though excessive dressing) to start. Entre was the Seafood Platter (fries cod & halibut, clams, calamari,oysters that comes with fries & coleslaw split between my husband & I for $22. The halibut was good, cod ok but little flavor. The clams & calamari had a lot of breading but not bad. The worst was the grilled oysters. They were mushy & smelled horrible. (Continues working). Me (still standing awkwardly by the door): Ok.... Another waiter walking by: "Hello, have you been helped?" Me: Ummm..... I'm not sure.... Funny to have so many helpful waitstaff, being really unhelpful.... Oh well. At least the lemongrass dry soda and Mex fish taco were good. Recommendation to the business: get taller barstools, and open up the two rooms together. I bet it will give the place lots more space and it'll be easier for the waitstaff to navigate. read more

What a wierd place. I had an idea that there may be some problems by the decor of the place. I gave it a chance but sure enough.... The clam chowder was thin (bisque) but plenty of clams. The tomato soup was not tasty and do not suggest you bother. The shrimp cocktail was large but most will not finish it becuase the horseradish was so painful it was like I was being "punked" by the cook. Everyone ordered a cocktail and even the hotsauce lovers were shocked. Don't order it. Period. Don't expect super quick service if you have a limited lunch time. read more

I'm so full, because I could not stop eating the awesome fries that came with my order of fish and chips. The $9.95 cod and chips was completely worth it. Everything was cooked perfectly with great flavors. I think I'd trust anything on the menu. They just make really good food without trying anything too hard to make it more than it is. This place has the best cocktails in town, HANDS DOWN! Their fish tacos are to die for, and if you're into vegetarian options I HIGHLY recommend their black bean burger. It doesn't pretend to be something it's not, its just plain delicious whether you're a vegetarian or omnivore. Also, Charleston is the second largest port in Oregon for Dungeness crab landings. When in Rome, eat as the Romans do! The crab cakes here are full of fresh, local crab, and not a bunch of breading. They are the best I've had in Oregon (although the hunt always on). read more

Delicious! I am not a fan of seafood in the least and this place grabbed my attention. My parents wanted to try it out, so we stopped by. My mother had tomato bisque and my dad had clam chowder to start. I tried the tomato bisque and it was amazing. It had spice to it which made it much more tasty than the usual watery tomato soup. I had the spicy halibut tacos. Another amazing dish! They came with halibut, chipotle sauce, black beans, avocado, and cabbage. I also sampled the halibut and chips. I have never enjoyed fish or tartar sauce and both at SharkBites made me change my mind. I figured when I was in a place such as this I should give the fish a try. I couldn't have been more pleased with my visit. Our waitress Amy was pretty much the only waitress on duty with the help of another girl helping bus food. Amy was not only beautiful but she was very personable. She came to the table and struck up a conversation before taking our order which was very pleasant. I ordered my tacos without cabbage and when they arrived with cabbage on them I didn't mind too much and got up to use the restroom. When I returned my plate was replaced by a new dish that had chips an salsa on it. She came by and apologized that it came out wrong and brought me chips to eat while they prepared new tacos. I was pleasantly surprised by how great this little restaurant was. It can be easy to miss so be sure to use your gps to locate it. First the good. The cocktail sauce was superb. There was enough horseradish in it to give it a zing far above the ordinary. Now the not so good. The food was way below mediocre. After having and loving the fish and chips at J's in Lincoln City I was amazed at how poorly they were prepared here. If it wasn't for the cocktail sauce they would have gone uneaten.
