Went to the new Shannon's today for lunch. Two plates, two drinks, and two cobblers cost $35. It's good, but not that good. I asked cashier why the cost was so much? The reply was that each plate was $9. ?? I said, "I only have two plates? You're telling me I have $17 worth of drinks and cobblers?" If I had a hankering for soul food, I would go to Shannon's Cafe. The food is down-home cooking, made fresh, and tasty. It's too bad that it's just not quite what I'm looking for...probably because my tastes are from the midwest so I like my beans thicker and sweeter, and I like my meatloaf a bit lighter and smokier, and I like my pork with different accents. So everything I tried was good, but it just wasn't what I was hoping for. The decor is a bit shabby, but not dirty...sort of like Martin's. I'll have to go back and try their ribs and fried chicken. The limited menu and pre-prepared food is maybe even part of the charm, but it's a shame I couldn't get fried chicken on a Saturday. Oh, and pretty good sweet tea. read more

My husband and I drove through Bryan last weekend on a road trip from CA to GA and I'm still thinking about the great lunch we had at Shannon's. That day was beef tips and smothered pork chops. Ate here with gf and her mother. Fried chicken was a bit salty. The rice couldn't have been blander. Definitely tasted like minute rice. The beans tasted like they came from a can with added sweetener to it. The mashed potatoes had garlic in them, but again, had that non-homemade taste. Ordered peach cobbler and it was awful. It was a pastry covered in all spice and can peaches including all of the syrup from the can. No one was impressed. In addition, the service was pretty poor. One plus, the ice tea was decent. Overall none of us were impressed. Will never go back! read more

My goodness! We were there for lunch today and my husband said he had the best meatloaf he ever ate! I serve him meatloaf... Anyway, I had pork bones, mashed potatoes and cabbage. They must be the cooks for heaven because that food was heavenly. The Monday special is Oxtail and Thursday special is chicken and dressing. Although it was a hour's drive for us, we will be back. When you pull up to a hole in the wall restaurant but the parking lot is packed that's s good sign. Shannons was great. The meatloaf was amazing. The mashed potatoes were homemade and when the server put the gravy on them he added a few "scraps" of meatloaf. Go to Shannons! read more

I really wanted to like this place but for some reason I couldn't. I went a little late in the day (around 2:30) so the only thing that was left was Chicken and Dressing for their ever changing menu, so I reluctantly got that. The highlights were the dressing and cranberry sauce. I found the green beans to be way too salty perhaps from soaking in the pan juice and the macaroni and cheese was far from Southern and more like Kraft (I'm a mac and cheese connoisseur from a long line of Southern meal makers lol). The cornbread wasn't dry but just wasn't my taste. To me it lacked even a hint of sweet to get rid of that gritty cornmeal taste. I can't really speak on the chicken as it's still in the to-go carton. The bright side to everything was the sweet tea which actually was very Southern and sweet just how I like it. However, I think this place deserves a second chance. I plan to go back again tomorrow, at an earlier time when perhaps they will have more choices to pick from and something new to offer up. I hope it's a trip well taken and does not disappoint. For now 2 stars. read more

This was my first time trying chicken & waffles. Admittedly, it was only ONE waffle (even though the menu said "waffleS"). But, the combination was good, especially after I added some syrup to the waffle and some Louisiana Hot Sauce to the chicken! :) I'd try this place again, if I were in the area. read more

When my husband drove up to the place I was a little hesitant, but OMG, the food was amazing, fantastic, and absolutely wonderful. We've been back many times and we've never been disappointed. The food is cooked and served with love. The peach cobbler is so good my husband always asks, "Who made this" and then proposes to the cook! LOL read more
