Don't let the exterior fool you, this place has some of the best southern soul food you can find in B/CS. My friend Kaleb told me about Shannon's and so of course I visited for lunch this week with my roommate. We were first skeptical when we saw the shoddy nature of the building and front door, but once we opened it we found everyone awesomely friendly and welcoming. You can tell that most of the people there are regulars and it helps add to the charm. Now onto the food. ERMAHGERD THE FOOD. I thought they had kidnapped my grandma and held her hostage in the back to make mashed potatoes and beef tips. You know the beef tips are good when they fall apart on your fork from the tenderness. Along with the beef tips and mashed potatoes I had cornbread and macaroni. Everything was very filling and delicious. Halfway through the meal my roommate commented that he felt like he was eating Thanksgiving dinner - he had roast chicken and stuffing. I tried it and it was equally as awesome. Make sure you get their sweet tea. It's definitely sweet. Next time I will come by before 10:30 and get their breakfast. Chicken and Waffles? I feel like this place will completely dominate those from at Sully's. Also the entrees apparently rotate daily so you'll never know what awesomeness you'll get. read more

Great southern homestyle cooking! I've tried several of their daily specials and so far, my favorite is the baked chicken with dressing. So yummy! The menu depends on the day but they usually always have 2-4 main entrees to chose from and an array of sides.The meal also comes with a corn muffin, drink not included. Hidden off the main thoroughfare in Bryan, is an inconspicuous little restaurant offering daily soul food specials called Shannon's Cafe. Shannon's Cafe is located at 601 San Jacinto Lane and doesn't waste time on looks or decor. The staff is polite but all business, as they have a line inside, a line at the drive-thru, and were taking telephone orders at the same time, they have become an efficient plate producing team. Shannon's Cafe is unique in that they do not offer a normal menu. 3-4 plate options are made fresh daily and you walk through the cafeteria style line and choose which option appeals to you. When they are out of a certain dish, that's it, they are out and you have to choose something else. My wife chose beef tips and white rice with a side of mustard greens. I can tell you that the beef tips were so tender they must have been pressured cooked or started the previous night. The gravy was a little bland but nothing a little salt and pepper couldn't remedy. I ordered the smothered pork chops with mashed potatoes and pinto beans. Other options were breaded catfish and yams. The pork chops were about 1/2 inch thick and amazingly tender, and could be pulled apart with a fork. The gravy again was in need of a dash of salt and pepper. The pinto beans were hearty and flavorful. The mashed potatoes were just like the ones Mom makes, with delicious little chunks of potatoes from being hand smashed. We ended the meal with homemade desserts of banana pudding and peach cobbler. The pudding was creamy and packed with vanilla and banana flavor. The cobbler sauce was loose, but the strong combination of sweet peaches and savory cinnamon was excellent topped with crispy breading on top. I missed the exact cost of each selection, but each plate averaged out to $11.00 per plate, plus the price of dessert. For fresh, homemade, heartwarming soul food, Shannon's Cafe is an excellent choice, but get there early before your options run out. I can't tell you how the food was because you go in and order at the counter and pay. You then sit and wait for your food. I waited over 40 minutes and never got mine. But many people, who appeared to be regulars and came in after me, got food before me. I decided to simply leave and let people know I DO NOT RECOMMEND this place! Umm, I'd say this is some of the best Texas soul/ home cooking i've ever had. The outside of establishment isn't that impressive. The employees were very welcoming, a guy in the back.. woman at the cash register... southern hospitality. So they had an option of fried chicken, ribs, and beef steak with gravy. I got the beef steak with mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and greens. They serve with two cornbread rolls. Yum yum in the tum, flavorful home cooking! Also got some peach cobbler, so good!
