What a treat to discover the cozy and historic Shank's Tavern today...a 45 minute drive from our home but highly rated here on Yelp and we were hungry for some great food. It is Thursday so the Beef in Weck was the special of the day and it was worth the trip. A speciality of western New York State (Buffalo) the kummelweck bread roll is shipped in and the thinly sliced rare roast beef with horseradish and au jus on the side was absolutely the right combination of flavors. I would recommend adding a dish of their delicious creamy Cole slaw as an ideal accompaniment. And lucky us, homemade Kentucky Butter Cake was the perfect ending to a great meal. Besides the excellent food, the staff was so friendly and eager to please and not bothered at all by our bevy of questions regarding the 210 year history of the tavern now on its third, I believe, generation of owners from the same family. Such a cozy and fun atmosphere. We wandered in here while exploring the cute town of Marietta. They had just made last call, but welcomed us anyway! We did not get a chance to try any food, but we will definitely be back to. Our bartender was very sweet. I ordwred the mango habanero cider. It was unique (definitely has a kick!) and I did like it, but it was hard to drink the entire thing because of the sweetness. We also were able to sit by the fire while we drank. This place is in one word FANTASTIC. Its an old tavern, it looks old. Has outdoor seating. Staff is amazing and fun but not overly in your face, unless you want them to be. My husband and I went for the Beef on Weck. It was outstanding! My husband is from New York and the Beef on Weck was just as he remembered it. I ordered their Kris Kringle Collins and it was fantastic. A blend of pear and apple juices. I got mine alcoholic with spiced rum. I also added a sugar and cinnamon rim on the glass. This is a great local tavern. The prices are great, there's a parking lot, plenty of street parking and even a bike rack of you coming in from the trail. They recently added a picnic table out back so you can enjoy a beverage, grab a burger and hang with your four legged friend. There's always smiling faces inside. Although we are from York Shank's is our favorite place to eat. The staff is above friendly, the drinks and beers are tasty, fresh and reasonable. Then there is the food. WOW. Shanks is a perfect example of fantastic dive bar. It's Lancaster's oldest continuosly operated tavern and the owner, Bob Shank, has done a great job making sure it's history is preserved. Bob is the person who makes Shanks so special and I hope that anyone who visits gets at least a chance to meet and chat with him at some point. He has many local patrons who absolutely adore him, including myself. They are usually not open on Saturdays except for private parties or special events. We were here for a Relay For Life event that Bob generously allows our team to have here every year in April. We got lucky and had great weather so they opened the patio to allow for extra seating as it was definitely needed. One of the highlights is getting to see Bob "The Rodman" Shank perform some classic Rod Stewart songs. It's been Bob's thing for many, many years and he's perfected it, although I was sad to see he didn't break out the spandex for this performance but he rocked the pink blazer! If you like history and meeting friendly staff and patrons while enjoying a craft brew, bourbon or cocktail this is definitely the place for you. Their baby fat and big fat burgers are yummy and made to order and they do have some great happy hour specials during the week for drinks and food. If you are pretentious or stuck up in your tastes and looking for a frilly fancy establishment then you probably won't enjoy Shanks. read more

I love love love Shanks. I love the owner. I love that I can meet my friends there for a spontaneous drink or take my kids there for a good dinner. We enjoy the patio in the summer month. My co-workers and I unofficially held a few Happy Hours here (Domestic drafts/bottles for 1.50??? How do you go wrong?). I'm not sure if I've ever spent more than 20 bucks buying a round here. I was always pleasantly surprised at my bill at the end of the night. So if you're one to get wastey face and become overly generous with booze then have a DD drive you out to Marietta and visit Shank's! The bar is looks like a quaint house on the outside but step inside and it still looks like an old house but there's a huge bar in the front and some sitting areas in the back. This place is usually lively and the bartenders are friendly. One of the things I like about Shank's is that although it is a "Locals" bar. They aren't exclusive... which is more than what I can say for the bars along Front st. They have TV's to catch your favorite sports teams and a dart board for those who feel that they are coordinated enough to throw sharp objects across the room while intoxicated (I guess I never understood why these are in bars). A lot of the food seem like they're from frozen food packages, I would stay away from them. Except maybe Taco wednesdays.... read more

The food and booze is very reasonably priced, the service is good and friendly, the beer selection is not huge but really good, and the food can be truly tasty. Check out sushi Fridays! Pretty cool little place. I was there on Seafood night. I was surprised by the diversity of the menu. Each night they serve something completely different. Crushed some mussels and the gyro was quality. It has lots of history that can't be faked. I believe its the oldest continuously running bar in Lancaster. It also has a deck which would be cool to check out in the summer. Also tasted some sushi which was pretty good. The staff is 'homely' and the perfect place to sit with friends and talk. No 'clubby' or dance floor crowd. Just good folks. They played old skool R n B tunes the whole time, which I found odd, but it actually works and refreshing since you don't hear it a lot. It is a great gem in a historic town. There are good specials everyday and they have plenty of beers to pick from in bottle or on draft. If your looking for something different give this place a try. Friendly staff, most customers are locals who are very cliquey and stand-off ish. Sometimes you'll meet a cool person, but I seem to be questioned when going here, although I live half a block away. Been by this place quite a few times, and finally got the chance to try it on a recent friday night (which happens to be seafood night, so they had crabcakes, steamed clams, mussels & shrimp, as well as some basic sushi rolls. We gave the crabcakes & sushi a try, along with their cajun soup, and a caprese sandwich (grilled cheese with pesto, tomato, and greens tucked inside). Overall, we enjoyed the food, so that was a plus. We also liked the variety of beers available, especially $2 draft specials on Fosters Lager. The service was fine - she came by to check on us (refill beers, check food, etc...) and it worked out fine. The only thing unusual was that I am used to receiving a printed receipt showing what we had and the cost for each. Here, when the bill came, it was a slip of paper with a total $ value circled. Doing the math in my head, it was close (within $2 or so), so we paid up and left. We'll definitely try it again, maybe a different night (beef on weck night? or maybe taco night?)
