Decent Chinese restaurant in Alexandria. Went to pick it up and just parked on street to run in. The inside of the restaurant seemed like any other Chinese restaurant. The service was very nice. We have gotten Shanghai Peking Chinese Restaurant three times in the last two weeks, it is addictive. Really fresh ingredients and thoughtful preparation in this food. Shanghai Peking is a solid choice for Chinese take-out in the Old Town Alexandria area. You can also dine in if you want too. For takeout, the food always comes hot and faster than most other options. I really like the sesame chicken, broccoli and beef, and beef lo mein. They all heat up really well the next day too. The only item I didn't enjoy as much was the dumplings in red chili because I didn't expect it would have a thick peanut sauce in the bottom, and the chili wasn't as very spicy; the dumplings were good though! What I really appreciate is they also have a special list of menu items that are on the healthy side because it's all steamed. For example, to get my takeout fix while trying to eat more balanced foods, I've enjoyed ordering the steamed chicken with veggies and the steamed shrimp and scallops with asparagus. read more

Very good American Chinese takeout. Online ordering is a breeze, which I pay when I pickup. They have coupons, spend over a certain amount, get a meat fried rice, etc. The staff are very nice, which is unusual for takeout places. I think you could eat in there but probably for the lunch crowd. We got the sliced fish schezuan style, beef schezuan style, salt and pepper shrimp, and the order came with chicken fried rice. The beef was tender, the shrimp was plump, and the chicken was moist. The fish is typical Chinese hotpot so it ends up melting with the broth. I prefer a firmer fish but definitely very good. The broth is schezuan style though I would like more Mala. Mala is that hot and numbing feeling. I will ask next time. read more

Ordered (for delivery) the Chef's Special Crispy Shredded Chicken (F18) which I've never had or seen in any other restaurant. Though the breaded chicken was crispy as described, it was overcooked and very hard to chew. Possibly that was because they used very thinly sliced or shredded chicken. They brought my food on time and food was still hot (this is very important to me since I don't care for "not hot not cold" food). However, there was no chopsticks, folks, or spoons in the bag; which is an honest mistake. That isn't the reason why I am only giving one star. When I scoop some tofu out of the container to my personal plate, I saw a piece of hair stuck between tofu! I couldn't help thinking about how unsanitary the kitchen would be. I recently ate here and am not sure what I think. The problem is that I think my taste for Chinese food has been replaced with the famous black and white bear restaurant that is really fast. I had the spicy Szechuan pork. It came with a side of rice. First, I felt like there was plenty of food and not just the rice. The pork dish was loaded with pork, carrots and a few other veggies. The rice was in one of those little white boxes. I did not feel that the dish was spicy at all, even though I ordered it so. One of my dinner companions had the Szechuan chicken with medium spice and the other had shrimp. The companion with the chicken was less than satisfied, while the shrimp eater was quite happy with the choice. Again, those dishes were quite full and came with a side of rice. If craving authentic Chinese food, please try this restaurant. However, if you have been acclimated to that fast, bamboo eating bear, you might feel a little disappointed. read more

I always hate writing reviews for my favorite places because I don't want them to get so popular that it would be impossible for me to get my food there... but Shanghai Peking has been a solid choice for Chinese food in the DMV area. I've been struggling to find a place that wasn't super far away, super expensive, and delicious, but Shanghai Peking is super quick, provides a good amount of portions and I think the price is right. I really like the Ma Po Tofu, the Broccoli Beef, Lo Mein, Crispy Noodles, Sesame Chicken, and the Hot and Sour soup. There's plenty of other things I've tried that I can't remember in the meantime but I have not had a bad experience here. This local business needs to stay open, as they are a small operation! New to the area and had a craving for take-out Chinese food. A local FB group recommended this place. I ordered online and my food was ready and waiting when I arrived 7 minutes later. It was all hot and delicious when we got home. The hot & sour soup had a ton of fresh mushrooms, egg, tofu, and bamboo. The beef noodles were tasty. We had been ordering from Shanghai Peking regularly before we stopped several years ago when the quality, in our opinion, began to slide downhill. Last night, we decided to give them a shot and see if they had improved, and we were not expecting much.  However, to our pleasant surprise, everything that we ordered was great!  We had crispy beef, salt and pepper chicken, and fried wontons.  Yes, everything was fried, but oh well, that's on us.  Everything that was supposed to be crispy, was; and everything that was supposed to be tender (i.e., chicken), was.  As of last night, Shanghai Peking is back in our rotation!  The delivery was prompt and courteous as well. read more
