Eastern has your typical Chinese-American dishes. While there are a few tables, I think Eastern is primarily a take-out restaurant, especially for lunchtime. I did eat in, and ordered the Hunan Beef lunch special. This is rice, vegetables and a sauce. It comes with your choice of either steamed or fried rice, soup (I chose wonton) and an egg roll. Nothing in the Hunan Beef lunch special knocked my socks off, but was decent. The exception was the wonton soup, which was thick heavy noodles with only a little broth. I've been eyeing this place for a while because I like little hole-in-the-wall type takeout places. I ordered orange chicken (crunchy and delicious as it should be), kung pao chicken (could've been a touch spicier but good), broccoli in garlic sauce (surprisingly spicy which I happen to love but watch out), white rice, fried rice, and egg drop soup (honestly, some of the best I've had. TL;DR: not what I had expected, but quite edible. Average Chinese takeout/delivery fare that satisfies, but not very exciting. Eastern is tucked into a tiny strip mall on South Kings Highway next to 7-Eleven and a laundromat. It's not gourmet, but it DOES offer some American dishes (subs, chicken wings, et cetera) if you have friends hanging out in your living room who don't necessarily want Chinese, even though you're pining for some lo mein. I'd never ordered from Eastern before, but it's snowing outside and I felt adventurous. I'm not terribly excited, but it's not bad Chinese. As I was chewing on shrimp toast that seemed to require more mastication than is typical of anything on a Chinese appetizer menu, I thought back to college, where post-midnight essay-binge fare usually led to the one local Chinese take-out place that really wouldn't be your first choice, but filled you up when you needed something at 2 AM. Or maybe I'm being harsh... I DID just get a delivery driver (I'm sorry, dude... I should have tipped you even more) to hand me lunch in the sleet-snow-ice thing happening outside. And the food is OK. The aforementioned shrimp toast is overcooked, and a bit too chewy. The boneless spare ribs are not tender, and I find them rubbery, even though they are standard-issue boneless ribs and taste OK. Egg roll is doughy/chewy but good, and the chicken-corn soup is not quite what I had expected but good. I had always thought chicken-corn soup was a bit more .... creamier? Whiter? .... than this version; Eastern serves up tender chicken and corn in what appears to be a base of egg-drop soup. This is the WORST food I've ever gotten from a carryout. Bland as ever! I wish I could give 0 stars.

I can't like this place. They have treated my 80-year-old grandma so terribly over the years (and I really can't understand why she continues to order from the place). And the customer service isn't very good. Case 1: My grandma orders delivery from them often, even though we live a couple of blocks away. When the delivery guy arrived, he basically grumped at her for making him drive so short a distance (it's a short walk), even though that's what he gets paid for AND she tipped him. Does he not want the job or something? Case 2: A few years ago, she ordered in Chinese and some sulky teenager took her order. I'm guessing this was the owner's teenage daughter who didn't want to spend her summer sweating in the back kitchen taking orders, but my grandma likes to practice her Chinese and ordered everything in Chinese--which should be pretty standard for a Chinese takeout place, right? My grandma switched to English a little, and the girl FLIPPED OUT at her because if she could speak English this whole time, why did she make the girl have to work so hard by speaking Chinese? Never mind that the girl did just fine taking the order in Chinese and that she probably has had to do it many, many times with other customers. Case 3: I was just here today on a whim and ordered fried chicken wings (with fried rice, but not the peppery kind) and Hunan mixed vegetables. The menu isn't that extensive, as I had a lot of trouble finding a vegetable dish that sounded good... But my real problem with the experience was that there was a REALLY sketchy/seedy guy who just sat there ogling my little sister and me in a not so discreet way! He waited a really long time before ordering two egg rolls and then proceeded to stare at my sister and me. It was really disturbing. Oh, and our chicken still had hairs on them (not human hairs, chicken hairs). Not that big a deal, but not terribly appetizing when you first see them. If you want Chinese takeout, I recommend walking a block north to School Street and ordering from Chin's kitchen. They are SO much friendlier there, and I haven't ever had any problems with the customer base. read more

This place is really just your average Chinese carry out, except for the fact that they serve up so really delicious egg rolls. Yes, I said egg rolls and not the pale imitation that most Chinese restaurants attempt to pass off as the original version of egg roll goodness. I will say delivery was very fast, the food was not terribly hot. I was sharing with another delivery through Uber eats. I ordered the dumplings which were incredibly doughy, and way to doughy for dumplings in my opinion. I will not be ordering them again. The general Tso's chicken was pretty tasty no complaints there. We moved from CT to Virginia a few years back and ever since we haven't been able to find take out chinese like what we were used to, what we think is good. Finally after moving to Alexandria and trying out Eastern Restaurant we can say that we've found good chinese take out! While the egg rolls aren't as good as we had in CT (the wrapper is different somehow and not as bubbly, crispy, or airy) it's by far the best we've had in NOVA so far as many other places were just dripping with grease, overfried, or had bad fillings. When I first moved to the area I was looking for a good Chinese restaurant...the kind that looks seedy and kinda dirty but has the best food and you brag to your friends how good the moo shu in your neighborhood is? Co-workers and family members have been ordering take out from this place for a long time. So, it's safe to say, I've had everything on the menu time and time again. Thats hasn't always been by choice either. They're close, so I'll usually give in. To be honest, it's not all that great. I'm not sure how or why every dish comes out this way, but Easterns food is greasy. It's actually overpowering how "washed out" the food is with a greasy film. Lacks spice and many of the dishes are bland. Dumplings are decent though. I wouldn't recommend this place. Bamboo garden up the street is a tiny bit better. This place is now our go-to Chinese delivery. Solid classics, decent prices. They have the best General Tso I have found thus far in NoVa, and the closest-to-accurate version of my beloved chicken with garlic sauce I have had since moving to the South. Pepper steak and crispy beef were also really good, and the pu-pu platter is a great deal. BF loves the wonton soup and the beef teriyaki, and I like that the crispy shrimp are panko-breaded and large. I've been to this place many times. To simply put it...AWESOME. I can only speak for the meals that I have destroyed. Lo mien, chicken wings, fried rice, steamed dumplings, terriaki chicken, or the shrimp. Just about everything was good. They also sell burgers and subs, but if I wanted that I'd go to a burger joint. *yes, I know I've had their wings also, don't judge me. The food is well prepared and the service is always on point.
