Not sure if it's true that Shanghai Bar is closed or not, but if they are, it must have happened pretty recently since one of my buddies was just here not too long ago. Assuming they are, though, it's a shame! While our experience here was pretty uneven, we still thought it was a pretty decent spot to grab a relaxed nightcap! Located just off the center of the Stix Asia food court (right by Matsuri and Shingen) and in the middle of one end of the food hall, Shanghai Bar was about as casual and small of a cocktail bar you'll find. Yet, despite how simple it looked, their drink menu certainly wasn't lacking in options. As their name suggests, a good portion of their cocktails, spirits, and beers had Asian influences (tons of Asian whiskeys!) and even featured a boozy boba (and non-alcoholic boba). What's more, they also had a relatively robust mix of food offerings, including a variety of appetizers, noodles, and soup (I think this is a sister eatery to Honolulu Noodle Company that's also in the food hall). -- TEQUILA P.O.G. - Tequila, Pineapple Juice, Orange Juice, Guava Juice, Simple Syrup, Sprite, Grenadine, Lime...$18 Even though the taste of this was a little fruitier than I expected, this was still pretty solid. The POG was refreshing, the tartness of the lime helped to cut the sweetness, and the pour of tequila was just right. -- SHANGHAI MAI TAI - Rum, Agave, Guava, Pineapple. Lime, Cherry, Lemon...$18 Of everything we had, this might have been my favorite. Between the guava, pineapple, and lime, this had a fruity element to it, but unlike the P.O.G., it wasn't super fruity. The pour on this one felt more than fair too, which was nice. -- MOJITO IN SHANGHAI - Rum, Lychee, Mint, Soda...$18 This is what we ordered, but I didn't even realize until now that what we got was more like a regular mojito. Still, what we did get was pretty good. Although it tasted a little sweeter than a normal mojito, I liked the bit of tartness and minty flavor it had. -- HOKU MULE - Hakuto Japanese Gin, Fresh Shiso, Lemon, Ginger Beer...$18 This was kind of a bummer and I'm partly to blame. Since they were out of ginger beer, I took the bartender's offer to use bitters instead of changing my order. Initially, this started off fine, and the overall taste was pretty good, but the bitters got to be a bit overwhelming. Similar to how we didn't notice that our Mojito in Shanghai looked very different from the photos in the menu and on Yelp, we also realized much later that our Shanghai Mai Tai was also served differently (it was missing the toothpick with the cherry and lime). Not as significant of a change, as they were more of a garnish, but still worth noting, as it was something else about our drinks that didn't match up. As much as we thoroughly enjoyed the more casual vibe here (as opposed to some of the more congested bars nearby), it's definitely offset by our drinks. Regardless of the fact that we mostly enjoyed what we had, it's hard to overlook the fact that only one matched up to what was listed on the menu. If nothing else, I can't help but wonder how much better they could've been! Not that it seems to matter anymore if Shanghai Bar truly is gone. Oh what could've been... Not the friendliest service. I suppose they are fed up with tourists. After a long day of walking, we unexpectedly ran into a friendly bartender named Nikki who told us about their Happy Hour, so we decided to return. Unfortunately, we ended up with an unfriendly bartender who didn't know how to make our drinks. The Duke was an overpriced cocktail. I do not recommend. The Shanghai Lemon Drop from their happy hour was made right. This is located in the downstairs Asian Food Hall plaza, at the Waikiki Shopping Plaza in a busy and loud corridor between other Asian restaurants. I do not recommend this place. This bar is in STIX Asia, a food mall located in the basement. It reminds me of the various food stalls at the Tokyo train station in Japan. Service was friendly when I arrived for an afternoon drink and snack. I got the Golden Lychee Martini and steamed dumplings. My drink was deliciously sweet and paired well with the savory dumplings. It had amaretto which is a sweet Italian liquor. My drink wasn't boozy and I only experienced a light buzz. The dumplings took awhile to make, but I was told in advance that there would be a wait. They have an extensive list of cocktails and also serve boba, beer, and a few mocktails. It's an interesting concept because it's open space and doesn't have the drinking scene vibe that's typical of most bars. It's relaxing and casual. read more

Shanghai Bar at Stix Asia is a vibe! I stumbled into this hidden gem in Waikīkī, last year so I went back this year and let me tell you, the Drunken Matcha Latte by Kim is an absolute must-try. Creamy, boozy, and perfectly balanced--every sip felt like a love letter to my taste buds. YUM! And Kim? She's not just a mixologist; she's a magician. Her cocktail skills are only rivaled by her incredible service--attentive, friendly, and with just the right amount of charm. I felt like I'd known her forever. My friends and I escaped from our kids during naptime for some shopping and drinks on a Friday afternoon. Stacy was our bartender on a Friday afternoon and was great - super personable and skilled with the mixology. They have food, but we just got drinks. - Onsen: basically a whisky sour with yuzu, with egg white - Hojicha highball: way more interesting to a your standard highball! With subtle hints of tea, well balanced We also did some happy hour Nikka shots, and happy hour pricing is a great deal. It turns out the owner is Taiwanese, which made a lot of sense because the drinks really did remind me of the craft cocktail bars in Taipei. This bar is inside STIX Asia, a food court in Waikiki. The service was super friendly and upbeat. The cocktails were well done with Waikiki prices. As for ambiance, it's bar seating in a food court. Nice part is you can see them mixing the drinks. Once recommendation would be to get nicer and drink appropriate glassware or increase the pour size. The old fashioneds looked ridiculous in large glass with a rather small ice cube. Oh, a bigger ice cube would also we nice. We went during their soft opening and hopefully it'll keep improving in the coming months. read more

This review is just based off one drink I had here which was the Kona Coffed Martini. It was outstanding. Was it pricey? Yes. But it was worth the price in my opinion. One of the best drinks I had. It's fine if you want to enforce last call, but if I sit down before that (even if just before)...don't ignore me for three minutes and say "ohhh, you just missed us" as if you hadn't seen me and hadn't made that decision when I sat down. It wouldn't have mattered to be turned away immediately, but it stings after looking through the menu and deciding what you want. read more

Came here for a lil celebratory drink for myself so I asked the bartender "give me something moderately sweet and moderately strong" and he understood the assignment!!! He gave me a cocktail (pictured) that was like strawberry passion or something like that. I had another one, and made some friendly conversation with him and the other bartender. Both were super nice and very funny and interesting. I had a great time just listening to them and enjoying my moderate tipsiness. And then I found out they serve green tea shots and I have been LOOKING for green tea shots because they are SO GOOD! Anyways, the bartender saw that my eyes lit up when they mentioned they have green tea shots and they knew that I knew that they knew that I wanted one. So they made me one and it was absolutely delicious, and very generously sized. I left a happy customer. read more

We stopped by for a quick drink while deciding on dinner at the STIX Asia food court in the Waikiki Shopping Plaza on Kalakaua Ave. It's an open-style bar seating, so if you're after a quiet spot, this might not be your vibe. For us, it was perfect! The space is roomy, and you can watch the bartenders work their magic while people watching or enjoying sports on the big-screen TVs. I'm giving this place 5 stars because, even if the ambiance isn't for everyone, the fantastic staff truly makes it shine. We didn't try any of the cocktails..maybe next time. Located in the center of Stix Asia (used to be Waikiki Yokocho), and wasn't very impressed. All the cocktails are named with Shanghai in mind. The Shanghai old fashioned my husband ordered and the cocktail I got (Akarui) looked and sounded interesting, but just didn't quite hit the mark. I couldn't even really taste the alcohol in my drink and it tasted like a fizzy soda, but some might want that! read more

3.5 stars I came to STIX Asia to eat at Gashoken with a friend. Sadly after walking around and finding Gashoken, the staff there said they aren't open yet! That's so sad right?! I think I need a drink! My friend was running a little behind due to the parking situation in Waikiki so I had a little time to kill. Every challenge presents an opportunity right? This presented me an opportunity to try out Shanghai Bar while waiting for my friend to arrive. Since we were eating, I just ordered a drink. After looking at the menu, I ordered The Bund Old Fashioned. It didn't take too long for them to make it but it was longer than usual and they weren't busy. The bartender wasn't very sociable until I initiated a conversation with him. Talking to someone was better than watching NBA reruns. He was a nice guy and I enjoyed my conversation with him till my friend arrived. The drink itself was ok but it was definitely Waikiki prices. It is a nice space with TV's at the bar but considering the cost of parking and the premium on drinks, I can't see myself coming here often. Great for tourists though! read more

I stopped by this place to have a quick one and ended up having a few. Nice little gem in the Stix Asian Food Court. They have bar seating, as well as tables. My bartender Nick D. was very friendly. Had a great time talking with him. They have an Asahi draft beer dispenser that serves up ice-cold beer. That's why I had a few more than I had originally thought. This was always a cool space in Waikiki and it remains so even under new ownership coming out of the pandemic. We had a chance to visits the Shanghai Bar this past weekend and what a great bar to chill at and people watch. Solid cocktail menu, some beers on tap, and a great menu of shareable pupu (appetizers) to nosh on. Plus, if you want to order food from any of the other restaurants in the food hall, you can do so and eat it here. The pork chops, fries, spicy won tons, gyoza and tendon are a must. Never have I met a bartender as engagingly witty as the young Filipina tending bar here just hours before my flight to Japan. She is certainly spunky. This is the reincarnation of Yokocho - familiar to anybody that has been to Waikiki. The central aspect has to be the bar right?!?! Shanghai bar does not disappoint, especially since there is food that cannot be missed too. The steamed dumpling is filled with stuffing, and the hi-balls are not the diluted kind. The whiskey menu contains hard to find gems.... Definitely worth the once a year trip to Waikiki. read more

don't waste your time or money here if you aren't white. they'll have you sit there while you watch them service other people while the bar is dead. fiancé and I sat for a cool minute before even being greeted, no hospitality or aloha AT ALL. white couple next to us that already had drinks were asked, "another round? you guys wanna get food?" as we're still sitting here just staring at her. for sure both her and the guy that was bartending also noticed us. I work in the service industry as a bartender as well so a simple, "I'll be right with you guys" goes a long way. She did say it after she heard my fiancé and I speaking about what was happening.
