This is actually an update I decided to give Shake Shack another shot and went inside this time instead of using the drive-thru. Turns out, the last time I came they gave me a plain cheeseburger--no lettuce or tomato--so that explains why it felt a little basic. This time, I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with added pickles, lettuce (no tomato), and crispy onions--and man, this thing is good. I've had Shake Shack a few times before in two different states, when I saw there was one by where my daughter would be competing I was excited. Despite the past reviews I still like giving these establishments a chance. I decided to use the kiosk to order, It was quite easy. It was almost lunch time, they weren't busy so my food was ready fairly quickly. A nice young man brought me my food and made sure I didn't need anything else. I had the Shroom Burger, fries and a water. This burger was as delicious as I had remembered it was the last time I had it in Seattle. The outside of the mushroom was crispy as it should be. I was in shroom heaven. My daughter had a Shake burger and of course I had to steal a bite. This burger was tasty, the meat was seasoned well and warm. She really enjoyed her meal. I've never had shake shack before, even though they're in my part of the US. After an extremely long day of road tripping and very little eating, my friend suggested SS for a late dinner. The drive thru was busy, but not extremely bad. I ordered a normal double patty shack burger with meat, cheese, and shack sauce. It was incredibly fresh, hot, and better than I anticipated! All Hat and No Cattle I had really looked forward to the opening of Shake Shack. From the outside it looked very promising. Sharing their parking lot with an upscale middle of the road restaurant that claims a great reputation for chicken and prime rib, I envisioned something special. But special does not always equate to outstanding. The modern building is clean and inviting. Their Health Department rating of "99" attested to that image of "clean." There is outside seating with a commanding view of Prior Road traffic and the back of Kohls department store. The sleek interior, that sports computer terminals for ordering if you do not want to deal with cashiers, has a minimalist feel and a lot of open air. You order up front, and pick up your order at the counter when someone calls your name. Then remember to "bus" your own table. While being a "new to the area" restaurant I was not surprised to have the cashier stumble on explaining the differences in their burgers, but she did soldier on. Their menu did have a number of options for toppings on the burgers, chicken sandwiches, and even a hot dog with a cheese sauce. Drinks included soft drinks, shakes (no malts), along with both beer and wine! After putting in our order (a standard burger, hot dog with cheese sauce, single fries, a soft drink and a shake for a bit over $27) the card reader "suggested" a tip for some unknown person who has not done anything yet! Since I had pretty much grown up waiting tables at everything from a pizza place to a fine dining Kansas City Streak House, I never had the arrogance to actually ask for a "tip" when taking an order! Shameful! After an almost ten minute wait (fast food?), I picked up my order. While the burger was dressed with an abundance what appeared to be fresh vegetables and a thick bun, the burger itself did not meet todays standard of a 1/4, 1/3, or 1/2 pound patty. Not only was it over cooked throughout, it was about 1/4 inch thick! I realize beef prices are high, but this was sad. My hot dog was the typical size found in budget packages found in your local supermarket, split and grilled, on a standard bun that was larger than the hot dog (about 6 inches long). The cheese sauce reminded me of Cheese Whiz. The thing that stood out the most was the flavor, or lack of flavor, in both the burger and the hot dog. Yes, the burger might be made of the advertised Angus mix from humanly treat cows, but I had expected some flavor - either good or bad but not bland. The all beef hot dog was no different as were the fries. All for over $27! Yes, all hat and no cattle! While this may be an example of what we should expect as the "new normal" for "Fast Food" then I will take Unk's, Hardee's, or McD's and not return for my lesson in virtue signaling. read more
