Since I've discovered Shakalaka, it has been my go to when I'm out of ideas of what cake to get. They have so many unique cake flavors and very nice looking cakes. I love how they so many options for their 4" cakes. Shakalaka is always on my mind. I never really had a bad experience with the flavors. The cakes are premade fresh so it's been a great last minute resource for me.

    Pork floss taro cake

A Chinese bakery serving a variety of pastries and cakes! We got the pork floss taro cake. The cake was a sponge like cake - super soft and springy. Inside were layers of taro cream that were not too sweet. The entire cake was covered in a generous portion of pork floss. A delicious unique offering and the flavors melded together perfectly. The line moves quick and be sure to know what you want before you get to the front of the line. Have not tried their other bakery items but would get the cake again!

Despite the influx of newcomers, this is still one of my fav bakeries in Flushing. I love the fact creative cake flavor options, not your usual fresh fruit with cream cake that you get in other Chinese bakeries here. There are so many different options. I also love the size, perfect for 2-4 people without worrying about leftovers. The breads here are pretty great, some fun and unique flavors.

The banana, just okay with chocolate filling, but the details are beautiful

The desserts here look beautiful! They have a nice little dining area in the back and a clean bathroom. The staff is very friendly Their milk tea is not bad, but I tried to ask for less sugar and they said they couldn't adjust it. The mango pastry is my favorite and it is worth the high price point. I tried the banana chocolate and although it looked gorgeous, it was just okay. We also tried the coconut one and a pineapple bun. I will be back to try more!

    Mango pomelo 4inch cake $17

This review is solely for their cakes. I first encountered these cakes during my birthday party and I immediately laughed when I saw the name of the birthday. I love catchy names like this. There were two 8 inch taro cake and oreo strawberry cake. Both had great presentation and were beautiful. To top it off, all I kept hearing was "good, not too sweet," which as we know is complete approval for Asian families. I love the abundance of toppings for each cake. They did not skimp on taro filling or oreo and strawberry. We liked it enough that we went back to try a few more of their cakes. One tip is if there is a cake you really want, place the order online. They only have a select number of cakes in store on display and in the fridges behind the counter. I ordered the 4 inch mango pomelo sago cake. It's a very delicate cake. As soon as you rip the plastic off, it starts to sag. This wasn't bad as a cake but it's probably the one cake I wouldn't get again from this bakery. It was $17 for a 4 inch and about $38 for select 8 inch cakes. Prices are good as your typical Paris Baguette and chain bakeries prices are climbing.

Pistachio Christmas tree cake was delicious. Not too sweet, not too big, and everyone dug into it. It's sooo pretty too. Definitely am interested in trying other bakery items of theirs

One of the best cakes I've had! I got to try the 3 layer matcha chiffon cake that had layers of whipped cream filling as well as strawberry and raspberry Jelly. Not only does the cake look so cute but the flavoring is also very good! Not too sweet and honestly so tasty. Their bakery also had a variety of other cool flavors that I want to try next time.

Not worth the hype!! Cute Coconut Moose but tastes blah!! For $11.95, nope!! Not again!! Service was ok!! Nice ambiance though!! Pricey place!!

    Egg tarts

Stopped by here for dessert and had a pleasant experience. There's a lot of selections to choose from but we ended up getting the egg tarts. It was flavorful, flaky, not dry, delicious. Overall ambiance is alright. It's pretty cramped inside and the tables were very close together so it was difficult to maneuver around. Bathroom was clean. I'd come back again if I'm in the area and craving something sweet.

I was able to try a variety of desserts from Shakala Bakery due to them offering small cakes. There are interesting combinations, but overall just okay. Soybean Milk Cake ($14.99) - This had a soybean cream which was unique. Matcha Pistachio Cake ($16.99) - Basically tasted like a matcha sponge cake with strawberries inside. Only had pistachio crumbs on top, otherwise no pistachio flavor which was disappointing. Taro Purple Rice Cheese Cake ($16.99) - I liked the creamy taro filling and fluffy sponge cake, but the purple rice inside was too hard. Basque Burnt Cheesecake Cake ($12.99) - This was light, but I've had better. Snow Nuts Torrone ($6.99) - Seems to be made with nuts, marshmallow, cracker, and cranberry, creating a soft, layered, crunchy texture. Not too sweet. Very good bite size snack.

    Banana mousse (Chocolate shell)

Now that I've tried some more cakes from this bakery, I can safely say that there are hits and misses. And some of these misses are outrageously pricey. I got the coconut mousse ($9.95) and the banana mousse because they were just so adorable. Both had a chocolate exterior that was impressively molded into a banana/coconut. While I didn't mind the taste of either, it's not something that I found super likeable or worthy of buying again. The pork floss cake was unique and reminded me of those Chinese bakery pork floss buns. I kind of liked the salty and sweet combo. The Christmas cake was very bland, and the sponge cake was more like the Chinese bakery Japanese cheesecakes. It weirdly had banana slices in between each layer, even though the cake topping was a chocolate-covered strawberry. I totally thought it was going to be a strawberry cake and not a banana cake! The mango puree cake was inventive in that the puree poured down when the plastic cake wrap was removed, but the flavor was a bit off. It didn't taste as sweet as it should've.

Shakalaka Bakery -- where the desserts are as fun as the name. This Flushing gem doesn't just settle for the usual suspects of Chinese bakeries; it serves up a variety of unique offerings that'll make you pause and say, "Wait, I've gotta try that." The osmanthus jasmine oat milk tea was an instant favorite. It's light, floral, and delicately sweet. Pair that with their creative pastry selection, and you've got a bakery experience that's hard to beat. Final thought? Shakalaka Bakery is a must-visit for anyone looking to step outside the usual bakery fare and indulge in something a little more adventurous (see pictures below). Just don't blame me if you end up craving that osmanthus milk tea every week -- it's dangerously addictive!

Shakalaka's cakes are DE-FRIGGIN-LICIOUS. Lemme start this by saying I'm not really a fan of cakes. HOWEVER, their cakes have to be every person's dream dessert. The quality is second to none and finds the balance of sweetness, but not to sweet so perfectly. This was the second cake we've had at Shakalaka (Blueberry) and previously we had their mango cake. I'd lean a bit more towards their mango cake, but this blueberry was still explosive. The jam that was included was a little tart which was a nice change of pace partway through the cake. If you have a birthday coming up, a special event, or just want an excuse to grab a cake GET IT FROM SHAKALAKA and whoever you share it with will be so impressed!

The inside is absolutely beautiful and while they have tables, they also have more traditional floor seating. We got a couple bites of food to eat, some of their tea, and some cocktails. Their food was very mediocre, at best. While the persimmon cake SEEMED to be made in house, it was very clear that everything off their food menu required minimal preparation (ie. for the dumplings, it was just har cow). I also thought their cocktails were okay, and out of the three we got, none stood out to me. I did enjoy their tea, however. But, it was also fairly expensive for what it was (~$50). Overall, I thought this spot was okay for the price and I'm not sure I would return.

We came with a fairly large group and ordered several teas and snacks to share amongst us. There were several options for the flavors of tea and each one had different benefits as well. I loved all of them, particularly the fruitier ones. As for snacks, we had this fried taro snack that had a crispy biscuit outer layer that was delicious. It was a bit of a sweet & savory mix, but not strong in either sweet or salty flavors. There was also this persimmon snack that was filled with nuts and other things. It was slightly sweet, very unique, and both paired well as a tea time snack. They're also open until 11:30pm! So if you want to skip the bar, I'd recommend checking out this tea spot for a nice hang out.

We got the ginger milk pudding. Do think it's a bit pricey ($10) since it's an easy dessert to make but I guess it's all the theatrics. They pour the dessert in front of you and put a sand glass on top. Once sand glass is done, so is the dessert and you can even rest a spoon on top. The dessert is very smooth, barely a solid, and its ginger taste is very strong- which I like. Strong ginger but pairs well with the milk and good amount of sugar. It is a bit spicy but I like it this way. They do have a lot of other desserts as well as savory items on the menu.
