The croissant was flaky on the outside and rich and layered inside with the chocolate. We had to get another one! The tea was light and scented, and had beautiful lavender buds and yellow flowers in it. The einkorn had a crispy, cracker-like outside that reminded me of fried things, and the inside was moist and complex, with a nutty, sour-ish taste. The only thing that disappointed me was to find out it wasn't a black-owned bakery as I had thought. I wish I could afford to buy one of each of the breads- I love how almost all incorporate sourdough! read more

Seylou is awesome. The people are super friendly, the space is really cool, the inside smells great once you walk in. They have a good selection of pastries and breads, none of which disappoint. And the iced matcha latte was the best I've had. I got a half loaf of their staple bread (forget what it was called) - it had a great crust, and the inside was perfectly spongy and a little sour, delicious warm with some butter. The kale and cheese pastry was amazing. Perfectly flaky exterior, the kale was crispy and delicious and the cheese was sharp and worked perfectly together. The oat cookie was also good, although it had more of a cake texture. Soft and fluffy. Will be back to try more pastries, I had to stop myself from getting one of everything. read more

D.C. is lacking in bread bakeries, so I was thrilled when I heard about Seylou. Finally, a bakery that is convenient and has awesome bread. The staff at Seylou has to be the nicest staff anywhere. They are so friendly and helpful and are really knowledgeable about their product. I love the spelt bread. It is wholesome and hearty. I also love the kale and cheddar scone and the cheddar and vegetable tart. Savory pastries are my thing, and these were both delicious, with plenty of cheese. The iced coffee I recently tried was good, but their focus here is definitely bread. I"m looking forward to returning to try the horse bread and the bird bread (gluten-free). read more

Goddamit, the breads are also freaking incredible and it makes me extra mad to pay pretentious prices for pretentious bread that deserves said pretentious reputation because dammit, it is all so delicious. read more

Bird bread is our favorite bread! So nutty, seedy, and bursting with flavor. Their muffins and scones are amazing also, their scones are super buttery and the peach ginger buckwheat muffin had the texture of a dense pound cake (in a good way). The matcha latte was on the sweeter side with a hint of matcha flavor, so I would have liked a stronger matcha flavor but still good. read more

I think this place may be more known for the pastries as opposed to their coffee. I just came from a brunch so I ended up getting their butter coffee (only comes hot), but I couldn't taste any butter? I'm not sure what I was expecting trying that. My friend got the latte and said it was fine, nothing exceptional. read more

Visited Seylou for the first time and it was great! We went on a Sunday right when they opened at 9:00 am. They are closed Monday and Tuesday but open the rest of the week so be careful of the days you go. We ended up getting their Oat Milk Latte, Iced Coffee w/ vanilla shot, the Pain Au Raisin pastry, and the Chocolate Almond Croissant. The coffee is La Colombe coffee so the blend was a bit strong but great overall. This was my first time trying a Pain Au Raisin pastry and it did not disappoint, that's a must try. The Chocolate Almond Croissant was amazing and the layering was intense! The lady who took our order in the front was amazing, you can tell she loved what she was doing! read more

It was my first time trying Seylou today! Loved the Maple iced latte, the Apple Ginger Handpie and the Onion, Chard, & Cheddar Scone. They have a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating. Will be coming back! read more

Incredible food and customer service. Everything I had here was spectacular. They source everything locally and you can really taste that when you eat their food. Not only is it delicious, but it is environmentally conscious. The vibes are also exquisite. Everything about this place makes it a must-visit. read more

What a gem of a bakery. Yes, I am quite sure that Seylou is not for everyone. If you like your breads soft, white, and fluffy, run away. If you like your pastries sweet, run away. (To those two groups of runaways: ideally, escape to Rose Ave on the other side of Thomas Circle.) Or if you're price-conscious--and god knows I can be cheap af when I need to--run away. Seylou may not make you happy. But if you like hardy grains, strong savory flavors, and aren't a huge fan of sugar being everywhere in our modern diets all the time...run or at least walk/drive a brisk clip to Seylou. Their breads and pastries are the real deal, healthy, flavorful, oh and also beautiful. Their croissants, besides being exquisitely laminated, are that savory item that would offend a purist but I can eat without my blood type becoming my glycemic index. Their savory scones are masterful. Even a tahini cookie is just barely sweet after caressing you with sesame umami. If you need more, they also care about their supply chain, not just being green and ethical but actively promoting regenerative agricultural practices. (This last sentence is for all the millennials out there. Yes, I can see you.) I have thought about breads and flour a lot because my mother can't eat regular flour in the US, my ex was diabetic, and gobs of white sugar ruin lives and strangle kittens. What your food is made of is important. What your body uses for energy is important. There is a real difference. Yeah, you will pay a premium for their stuff. Bakeries are a real tough business to run even when you're working with crappy commercial flour, and Seylou milling their own wheat etc etc has a real cost. I'm willing to pay, though, because I know what I'm getting is better for me and will make me happier than most breads I see on the market. read more

Probably the best mocha latte I've ever had and the veggie croissant was exceptional. So glad we happened by this wonderful bakery

Very interesting bakery/ mill with whole grain baguettes that are actually great tasting. The pastry was also amazing. I tried to get one of everything and the gluten free brownies and muffins tasty great. The brownie was rich also a dark chocolate espresso taste. The savory pastry with Mexican flavors was spot on. I enjoyed the croissant as well. My cappuccino was a little short but loved the rich flavors. I look forward to my next visit. read more

I got all excited about this place and trekked through the freezing cold over a mile to get some baked treats. The place is classy and has great light. Folks wee friendly. I was a bit shocked by the high prices but made the trip so wasn't going to pass anything up:) they also don't offer a decaf coffee option. For anyone who is willing to shell out over $5 for a pastry I would hope you could accommodate a desire to eschew caffeine... maybe ancient grains and decaf just don't mix? I got home and was so excited to try my whole wheat chocolate croissant. Sadly only half of the pastry had any chocolate in it - granted it was delicious but for almost $6 for a pastry I was hoping to enjoy it all... Updating slightly. The chocolate millet cookie had exactly one chocolate chunk in it and was super dry. The whole wheat croissant (plain) was super salty. Underwhelmed and won't be back any time soon... :( read more

Seylou is carving out a space for the traditional bakery. Don't get me wrong. DC has bakeries, but they usually just focus on sweet baked goods like cakes, brownies, and cookies. There lacks a space for quality traditional bakeries that sell bread too. We have Bread Furst, Little Red Fox, and now Seylou in Mt Vernon Square/Blagden Alley. Seylou is carving out another space too. It's DC's first whole grain bakery. They use buckwheat flour, wheat flour, and the like to create their breads all onsite (To the right of their shop is their mill). I ordered a loaf of buckwheat bread and it was perfect. Even after a few days, it was still moist and delicious. Inside they have a few sweet treat for those who can't resist, but it's primarily breads that they make. If sweet is your thing, grab a coffee inside and order a brownie. It's the best brownie I've tasted and even seemed a bit healthier since they use whole grain flour. Other things to order: Their whole wheat croissant (it's how croissants were meant to be baked) and their eclairs. The service is friendly and helpful; they gently guide you through the journey of finding the perfect loaf of bread. The only complaint is the price. My brownie, for example, was small and cost $6. If you want to splurge, it is worth it from time to time as Seylou creates some of DC's best breads and baked goods. read more

What I ate: Pear tart, golden milk with oat milk Visit date: October 5, 2019 First time? Yes. This is the place! I went here on a Saturday afternoon and it was the most relaxing experience. I ordered a golden milk with oat milk and a pear tart for-here. I was greeted by the most knowledgeable and zen bread guy I've ever met. As I enjoyed my snack I listened to him explain all the different bread and pastry offerings to guests. Take me back to here! The golden milk was the perfect temperature for sipping. The pear tart was lovely - not too sweet, and paired (pear-ed ) well with the warm golden milk. The space is small, but there's a lot going on in the bakery. They had bread samples out to try. I bought a bread bag (I was the first to purchase one!) and a couple of mini loaves to take home and share. read more

Unfortunately there wasn't anything I liked. I orders a chocolate croissant which was more bready than flaky and chewy as well(odd). I also ordered the double chocolate cookie which was dry and not sweet enough. I love dark chocolate and less sweet sweets but this was dry, not sweet enough, and flavorless:( last I ordered the mozzarella and tomato seeded bagel like pastry. It was again flavorless...tastes like cardboard! It needed salt. What a waste of money and food. Sadly I tossed all of it. read more

Wow, unreal pizza. This bakery only has their whole wheat pizza Fridays starting at 6, and it's worth the wait. Order ahead to have yours scheduled for pickup. They have some seating both indoors and out front on a quiet street. We opted for the classic margherita, although the cured beef and eggplant salsa verde options were tempting. Did not disappoint! Clearly a local favorite as a line started to form while we ate. Owners were friendly, and bathroom was clean. Need to go back to try the coffee and baked goods. Pro tip: order your pizza around 5:30, then go around the corner to Calico for drinks while you wait for the pizza. read more

I drive a long distance to come here on occasion. They ferment their dough the old fashioned way (for hours, instead of using modern shortcuts) which apparently breaks down gluten making it more digestible. I have had trouble with gluten causing inflammation in me, but I can eat their bread and I love their croissants and other pastries. It's very different from sicky sweet grocery store pastries-just sayin. Seylou's are much better quality and better for you. Try the chocolate croissants! Another tip-the website says they need 48 hours for advance orders but there is a way to do it without an advance order. If you go later in the day they are likely to be out of a lot of stuff, so you can just call in the morning and ask them to put things aside for you and you don't even need to prepay and don't need to think 48 hours ahead. read more

very cool place with great pastries, however, they are a mill and somewhat different pasties than you might expect. this place for sure is not starbucks or anything close to that. the pastries are on the darker side (i think some people might feel they are burnt) but they're definitely not! they're well made. i haven't tried their pizza but they have a pizza night on wednesday and it's something i'll for sure come back to try! i like their dirty chai, however, it could use more chai flavor, it mostly tastes like a latte but i did really like it. the staff is also LOVELY! really nice people and overall great vibes. read more

Cute coffee shop and bread bakery. I went in around 3pm on a busy Saturday, and most of what they had left was bread loaves and half loaves, rather than pastries (although they still had some brownies left). I sampled several of the breads, and all were moist and had a strong crust, although I'm a bit of a Philistine when it comes to conventional breads. They had a nice variety of gluten-free bread options. On the coffee aide, they offer lots of alternative milks! I ordered an iced chai with oat milk, which is usually my favorite, but found it disappointing. It didn't have the spice I look for in a chai, and instead featured an herbal, almost woody note. That said, I would definitely return here if I needed gluten-free bread or to take someone with food allergies on a coffee date. read more

This is a halal gem. The staff was extremely kind and accommodating, and the bread looked fantastic. They treated us extremely well, giving us water, tea and great recommendations. We got the meat pizza and while the price was definitely steep, I have had few pizzas that are as wonderfully composed. The meat was reminiscent of kabob, but I mean that in the best way possible. The crust was really well made, and I don't think I would ever find myself liking a whole-grain crust but here we are. The cheese was really high quality as well. There was a tasteful amount of tomato sauce. The arugula and peppers really elevated the slice. Overall, really enjoyed my experience here. I am excited to go try some of their bread. I wish there were stronger gluten-free options. read more

Probably the best croissant I've had in my life. Mediocre coffee. Very good COVID protocols in place and friendly staff. Very expensive.

First stop after arriving in DC. I've heard that they mill their own flour so was very curious to try. The dough has a unique nuttiness and earthy flavor that is slightly savory. It is not as buttery and flakey as a normal croissant, but the more you chew the more you can taste the grain. If I live here I'd buy bread from them regularly. read more

Seylou - Fruit Pastry - Apple with Ricotta - Bakeries Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

First time visiting Seylou and it was definitely a nice experience overall. Although I didn't particularly enjoy the pastry I had, my husband's selection was far better (I guess I know what I'm ordering next time, lol. Their latte was exquisite, perfectly balanced and just the right amount of creaminess. I love the intentionality and the fact that it's locally sourced fresh milled. I'll admit it is a bit on the pricier side, but isn't that usually the case with healthier alternatives? Definitely a must try! read more

If one is looking for bread and baked goods, I'd definitely stop by to check out their selections. I think the staff need to be more realistic with crowd control as one couple took 10 minutes to order and constantly asked questions about every single item. I wish another staff member would have help assist others in the queue that knew what he/she wanted. I'd avoid coffee here and walk just 100 feet to la colombe around the corner. Cute place, but it is pricey for some of the baked goods. read more

Sourdough loaf was so gross had to throw it out. Sticky and raw texture, something is not right with the recipe. Super chic, modern style cafe with lots of lighting. Came here for the baked goods but we were pleasantly surprised by the drinks as well, which were also quite good - we got a coffee and a matcha flavored drink. I will say that the matcha flavored latte was a little bit too sweet for my liking. We got one savory pastry - a mustard greens croissant, and one sweet - a pain au raisin. Both were absolutely delicious and the unique element of the pastries was really in the bread itself, which was soft, and moist with a perfect amount of fluffiness. I will definitely be returning here to try their pizzas, which seemed to be a popular option and quite unique, definitely not your typical New York pizza, but looked great nonetheless. read more

When I came across this bakery on 9th & N NW, I was truly shocked: How could I have missed this cosy, charming spot in all these years that I have been tracking DC's coffee's shops? Especially since it was not just a café, but also had the most marvellous wholegrain breads and pastries--the manager told me that ALL of their products were exclusively wholegrain...wow! I had an almond croissant, and I think it is safe to say that it was the best almond croissant I've ever had anywhere in DC, ever. And I eat a lot of almond croissants across DC's many coffee shops, so I know what I'm talking about. The manager was the sweetest person, she gave me a rundown of the different grains they use in their breads, explained to me all the herbal teas they have, etc. This is a one-of-a-kind place, and I wished Yelp would have a setting in which a user could give one 6-star rating a year, I would use my alottment for this year for Seylou, hands down. read more

Seymou has phenomenal baked goods - the chocolate almond croissant in particular is amazing, and the chocolate croissant is both unique (because of the whole wheat) and very good.
