Seymou has phenomenal baked goods - the chocolate almond croissant in particular is amazing, and the chocolate croissant is both unique (because of the whole wheat) and very good. I deducted a star because the vanilla latte I got there was both very expensive and absolutely terrible, but an iced latte a few months ago really did hit the spot. Maybe their syrups aren't quite perfect, but everything else has been. Definitely worth a visit! read more

Belated review from Wednesday when we came here around 2:00 pm. The space inside has a nice aesthetic but there's only outdoor seating (tables unfortunately were dirty). We hadn't eaten all day, so ordered a few of their baked goods: savory croissant, a kind of eggplant danish, the chocolate almond croissant, and a chocolate brownie. We both got iced chai lattes and they were probably the best ones that we've ever had (our daughter's rose-sage iced tea had way too much sage and basically tasted like cold floral grass). The baked goods were impressive. The whole shtick is whole grains here, which we've never experienced in croissant form, but their chocolate almond one is seriously spectacular--so super flaky, perfect amount of filling. Incredible! We loved the flavors of the leek-mozzarella, but you can tell that it had been sitting out all day because it was unfortunately soggy. Same with the eggplant thingamajig, though the flavors were good. Brownie was a solid A, and our kiddo's personal pick. All in all, we definitely enjoyed this place and would recommend it to others. Next time we're in DC, we'll go early, though, so we can get the freshest batch possible. read more

This is a rare unicorn indeed. They mill their own grains. They have ancient grains. Learn about industrial flours and how bad it is for our health. I'm bummed I don't live nearby. Yes it's pricey but worth it. Tried the croissant, financier and brownie. My favorite was the financier. Bought extra to take on flight home. My least favorite was the brownie. read more

I live for Seylou. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I've had the croissants, the scones, the donuts and breads. They also serve pizza, I believe Thursday-Saturday, and they are amazing. I buy the bird bread every single week. Can't say enough good things about this place! read more

The people who work here are so incredibly friendly! I went for the first time yesterday and they made me feel totally welcome. I had a great experience despite the fact that they were sold out of all their breads by the time I made it out. Tells you how good they are. I am so looking forward to ordering ahead and going back next week. I did get their savory monkey bread and it was delicious. The neighborhood was relatively quiet. I enjoyed checking out Blagdon Alley right nearby! read more

Oh my, I wish I didn't come across Seylou, it makes me want to pick up a loaf whenever I pass by. They have created a whole bakery menu with whole wheat products - bread loafs and pastries. Have tried a few things over multiple visits, and the breads are still the winners. Rustica loaf - wow. A truly delicious, crusty on the outside, fluffy and moist on the inside, sourdough loaf. Pain au levain - it was also good, but a bit drier on the inside and not as sour as the Rustica, which I was looking for. Sundried tomato danish - not my favorite. Ratio of filling to pastry was very low, and it was dry. Apple pecan scone - it was delish! Needed to be heated up a bit to soften. One note - they use quite a dark grain whole wheat so everything has quite a dark brown color. It's not necessarily burnt, it just looks that way, but I have had a couple things that were clearly over baked (like the danish that was over dried) read more

Their chocolate almond croissants are INCREDIBLE. I initially had a coworker bring me one and I fell in love. The products are made with whole grains, so that gave me some piece of mind (at least relative to a regular croissant). But honestly, the taster is just as good! The outside is crunchy and the inside is full of chocolate-goodness. When I went in on Wednesday morning, they had a selection of beautiful pastries. I will definitely be going back to try more. I haven't been able to try their bread, but if they taste as good as the pictures look, then I'll be back very, very soon. read more

Definitely worth it. Coffee was great and you can taste the difference of the whole grains. Chocolate croissant was amazing.

Such a great neighborhood bakery! Stopped by to grab a quick coffee. After seeing the pastry's, I decided a pastry or two were a must! I got the almond chocolate croissant and the corn & brown sugar cake slice. Both are delicious! The oat milk latte was also great. Overall, a really lovely Sunday morning stop! read more

Kudos to them for milling and baking 100% whole grain breads but, unfortunately, they taste burned. I don't understand this aesthetic, it certainly doesn't appeal to me... read more

I was very excited to hear about this bakery milling their own grain so I decided I must try it, but was disappointed. I ended up trying to monkey bread, brownie and the raisin pastry. The monkey bread was burnt on the top. The brownie, while having good large chocolate chunks, lacked flavor and had the texture of cornbread. The raisin pastry also was weird on texture and lacked flavor. I was very disappointed and ended up only have a bite of each pastry before throwing it away. read more

Amazing ancient grain sourdough!!! The interior will not be a bright white if that is what you are looking for. The use of ancient , unbleached grain results in an Amber colored outside and interior. The place has just opened, 3 months young. As you walk in humidity is the first sensation and then the smell of bread!!! It's a small place and they only offer 3 types of sourdough. That's it!! There is a coffee shop inside with a couple of seats and that's bout it. You go to get your loaf of bread and get out! Loaves are ready at 1300 daily. The round I bought was $11. The smell of the bread is really earthy, like chocolate coco nibs. Great soft chew with a slight tang from the sourdough. Not over powering at all. The sweetness comes from the ancient grain used. I didn't try mine until the nice day and it was in perfect condition. My recommendation is to wrap it up in aluminum foil if your holding it for the day so it's doesn't dry out. read more

Absolutely fantastic spot. I am shocked they only have 58 reviews on yelp! My friend and I came and spent 4 hours here on a rainy Saturday to have a marathon catch up session. The large windows make this space perfect for working or reading or staring wistfully over your coffee at passersby. Though, there isn't a ton of seating, so perhaps at times you might not find a place to sit. There's a bar with about five stools and then there are only two or three tables. We split a kale and cheese pastry and a monkey bread. They were both fab! The savory pastry was generously filled and the kale had gotten crispy at the ends and the cheese frico'd out. The monkey bread had fennel seed I believe and it made it so complex. The pastry was almost nutty--I'm not sure if they used any whole wheat flour, but it seemed it. I desperately wanted to get a loaf of bread to take home, but I had just picked up a loaf of rye and two people can only eat so much bread before it stales. Guess I'll just have to return! The coffee was also fantastic. I had both a latte and a drip coffee. I liked the latte a little bit more than the drip but they were both solid. read more

The food here was tasty, but the service is rather cold and unwelcoming. I thought at first it was a one-off and came back a second time, but received the same service. Every time I come in I feel like I'm inconveniencing the woman behind the counter. Food was good though, maybe I can order out... We tried the open faced squash tartine and the spinach croissant. Both were flavorful and had great texture. Unfortunately when we asked for them to be warmed up, we were told they were just taken out of the oven...although they were lukewarm. We also weren't given any silverware until we asked. They keep silverware behind the counter, which is rather inconvenient for dine-in customers. Seylou also sells bread loafs. Many people I've talked to like the baked bread they sell, but I'm not one of them. It always tastes burned and sour to me. I much rather prefer the bread at Baked Joint. Maybe it's just the style of bread at Seylou I don't love. They do samples, so try it for yourself! read more

Incredibly unique and well worth it. There are a couple of places to get good bread in the city, but nothing even comes close to Seylou. When we went, we got a couple of their other treats, a loaf to go, and a slice with butter to eat there. If they sold sandwiches with their bread, I might never leave. read more

Stopped by here for #SmallBusinessSaturday and tried one of the goods on display. They have an interesting story (the name of the place is the name of a desert bird that one of the owners encountered on his travels). When I visited, they had a selection of pastries (although baked bread appears their forte), some with and some without wheat. Being someone who likes wheat, I tried the canele. I could taste the wheat grain (yum), but it seemed to overpower the little bit of filling inside, making for a more bread-y of a pastry than I am accustomed too. Maybe if I had it with something to drink or something sweet on the side. The samples of bread were good. They also had brownies, cookies, and financiers, which I'll have to try the next time I'm in the area. read more

So excited that this place is finally open! (or at least open-ish until the formal Grand Opening in December) Space is beautiful and a welcome addition to Blagden Alley. The layout is cute- with both a coffee car/seating area and a traditional bakery and mill area. Went inside and tried a Financier pastry, which was great. Will definitely be back to try more goodies! read more

Seylou is awesome! It is hard to do whole wheat croissants and other pastries but they make them so delicious! I love that I can feel (slightly) better about eating pastries here. It is a beautiful space and the staff is really friendly. They also do pizza night on Fridays which is pretty good except I wish there was more pizza types available - last time I was there they only had one pizza available for slices - but that is a minor complaint. If you love delicious pastries you have to try Seylou! read more

While it looked like a bialy, I don't think it was a bialy. It was good, but the dough just didn't have that density and tooth that I associate with bialys. A bialy is more than a shape filled with that tasty onion mix in the middle. So idk, maybe it should be called something slightly different. Regardless, it is tasty and the coffee is good too. read more

All you have to do is see all the other reviews....this place is phenomenal. I love the feel of this place, makes me feel like I'm back in Europe :). I haven't had any loaves of bread, but I did have the kale & cheese croissant and let me tell you... I'll be back very often. Literally so good! The staff was also so attentive, kind and courteous. It is definitely one of a kind. Highly recommend! I'll be back to try the other things, the fresh bread loaves for a soup kinda night and the iced matcha latte which I hear is very good. This time we tried the kale and cheese pastry as well as the chocolate almond croissant. The kale and cheese pastry was amazing!!! It hit the perfect spot of saltiness and I don't know kale can taste so good! The croissant was also great, not too sweet which is rare and the almond paste in between is plentiful and it goes well with coffee. I highly recommend getting the kale and cheese pastry is savory is your thing. Will definitely come back for fruit tarts (the blackberry one with pistachio looks awesome) and veggie tarts (who know shishito pepper tart is a thing)! I also purchased half a loaf of einkorn bread and very excited to try out! read more

This place is bringing the small, corner bakery back in style with some top notch breads. My absolute favorite is their Horse Bread, which is only sold on the weekends, because it is mixed with numerous, protein rich whole grains that would normally be served to a race horse. But this one is for humans, so it's the perfect bread to slice up and make into a sandwich to give you a nice jump in the middle of your monotonous workday during the week. In addition to stellar breads, they also have some great pastries too and their croissants are some of my favorite. They also serve coffee and have a decently sized sitting area to chill with friends or work on a laptop in. So if you're looking for a unique place to get some bread, a snack, or just coffee with friends, Seylou should be your next stop. read more

I took pictures of their pain de campagne. They literally do not know how to bake--this is basic stuff. Heck, look up Mark Bittman's no-knead bread recipe and follow that. The inside of their bread is completely wet--it can be made into a glue ball. Forget attempting to slice this bread--it is impossible. For $6 for half a loaf, on top of that. I am astounded by how incompetent they are! read more

One of the best bakeries in town. Not your conventional selection of breads and pastries, they use more whole grains which lends itself to a more savory taste with minimal sugar. Can recommend the croissants, savory spiral pastries, baguettes, loaves and bread pudding French toast. Location in Shaw has a wide variety, but if you're in Dupont for the Sunday farmers market, they have an outpost there as well. On the pricey side, but worthwhile given quality. read more

Essentially the best bread that you can get. Anywhere. And at any price. This is the only bakery I've seen that makes bread from local organic milled in-house 100% whole wheat for real, and is natural leavening, long fermentation, and baked in a hearth oven. Congratulations to this bakery for using the best ingredients and in their pursuit of the healthiest and most wholesome product they can make. read more

To be frank with you, this excellent bakery was dealing this gloomy morning with the vagaries of oven temperament. My oat milk cappuccino was perfect, with the barista gracefully mutely pulling each espresso drink, carrying each by hand to various guests, to ensure our collective optimal temperature experience. The pastries looked a little scorched this morning, with no breads available till the afternoon. Timing and temperature on Tuesday. read more

Seylou is my favorite bakery in the city for bread. A full loaf if $10 and I'm particularly found of their sour dough variants. Not as sour as you would get from somewhere like the Mill in San Francisco, but when fresh it has a nice crust on the outside while being light and goey inside. We also discovered that they just started doing pizza on Friday nights. The night we went in they had three varieties. Lamb, margarita and a mushroom variety. Total came to just over $30 with tax, so it wasn't cheap, but the ingredients, especially the mushrooms were lovely. The bread was thick, and grainy, so it is a bit more like a focaccia then a Neopolitan pizza, but it was delicious. You can tell that the toppings, in particular, were really fresh. Inside, Seylou is one of the most attractive coffee shop spaces in DC. Seating is limited and they don't have wifi, so it's not a great place to sit and do work for hours, but a very nice place to meet a friend for a drink or a pastry. DC doesn't have a lot of great options for bread, hopefully Seylou will make everyone else up their game. read more

This place was an amazing find on a recent DC trip. I never go anywhere twice on vacation, but I loved this place so much, I went twice and I got bread to take home. The croissants are amazing- we had one with cheese. Then we took home the country loaf. It's amazing what they can do with whole grains. You can tell they are using all these different types of heirloom grains and techniques that are cutting edge on the whole grain frontier. It's really exciting! I also went and browsed their website and it's just amazing how they are also helping the locals in Senegal start their own bakery, too. Will be back as soon as I'm in town again! read more

They have lovely breads and pastries but it is definitely overpriced. I ordered a pie for Thanksgiving and I paid $45, the online system asks for a tip so I felt obliged to pay it, and the tip option shouldn't even show up when one is picking up the order. I knew it was a lot of money for a pie but I was happy to pay that as I assumed it would be delicious and worth every penny. Well, it barely taste like anything and an $18 pie from Whole Foods is incredibly tasty and satisfying compared to this one. I was very disappointing and the experience has put me off ordering anything from them for special occasions. read more

Earthy doesn't begin to describe this rustic bakery. You may just come in for a loaf of bread to dip into your soup for dinner but you will leave knowing the names of the farmers who supply the grains, how the grains are processed and information on how each loaf is made. We were delighted to be offered samples, as the loaves looked a little overly brown for my taste. We were pleasantly surprised to find they were crusty on the outside but moist on the inside with a pleasant chew and, well, earthy flavor. Pro tip - pick up a slice of the bread pudding, made with left over loaves; it's drenched in maple syrup and is one of the best I've had recently. read more
