Love this place. Best bread in the city right now. And they have fantastic gluten-free bread - bird bread. They also have great gluten-free sweets like the chocolate chip cookie. This place is awesome in that they do everything from scratch including milling their own flour. It is all super natural and super delicious done the right way with no shortcuts. On top of that johnathan uses this venture to support villages in Africa where the name of this bakery comes from. You have to check this place out. read more

Super cute and very modern with great coffee and freshly baked goods. As soon as you walk through the doors of this little bake shop, you can smell all the yummy and fresh baked goods that are baking. The sitting is limited but most come for the food. I would say the environment is more of a catch up with a friend rather than get work done!m atmosphere. I would definitely recommend trying this place even if you get the food to go! read more

Seylou - Cinnamon apple cider sugar donut and oat milk latte - Bakeries Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

I love their breads. It's beautiful and how bread should be. Chewy, nutritious, nurturing, soft and fragrant. It was an adjustment spending $12 on a loaf of bread. But then found that it lasts 3 times as long as a standard supermarket loaf with ten times the nutrition and a gazillion times the quality. So, do your mouth a favour. Go. One of the things I'll miss the most about leaving DC is my weekly Seylou bread. read more

Having gone back a second time when they were out of focaccia, all the pastries are really lackluster again.

Phenomenal bakery. Especially great spot for rolling out of bed for breakfast on the weekend. For best results, order the whole wheat almond croissant with iced coffee. read more

My favorite bread place in the city. I love how all of the bread is whole wheat. I wish it wasn't so expensive and if they were open Monday and Tuesday. read more

I think Seylou is better known for their bread, so I'd definitely come again to try that. Their butter coffee wasn't particularly to my liking but I enjoyed the tomato and goat cheese danish. I also wish the pastries could be warmed up, but nonetheless I'd come again to try some other items! I got the lemon thyme latte and the flavors weren't very strong but regular tasting latte was good! read more

This bakery in Shaw is definitely one of the best hidden gems in town. I'm a huge fan of pastries and have been to many different countries producing the best pastries in the world. Seylou croissants are a must try. You won't regret. They can be very filling though so be prepared! Atmosphere is very nice for meet up as well. read more

The bread is the best I've had not only in DC but anywhere. I don't know how they manage to get the nice crisp crust and soft, tender interior. I love that everything is whole grain, too. read more

Seylou has a great selection of pastries that it's almost hard to choose what to get! The last time I stopped for breakfast I got the corn bread, mushroom pastry, and their cinnamon bun. The corn bread was a muffin consistency and tasted very good. It wasn't dry, it had scallions and kernels throughout which gave it a very nice taste. It had a hint of sweetness but it wasn't over powering at all. I would definitely get this one again. The mushroom pastry was flaky, had the right amount of filling, and tasted like it had just been made. I do wish they had an option to heat up the pastry, I think it would have tasted better if it was a bit warm. The cinnamon bun was a croissant consistency and not a bread, which was delightful. It made the pastry taste light, which I appreciated. The cinnamon bun also had a sweet syrup that added another layer of sweetness. It was topped with a frosting, which was good but it tasted too much like butter. You can't go wrong with anything at seylou, it's a cute neighborhood spot where everything is homemade. read more

Finally DC has a great bread bakery. I got the mischbrot and it was everything I wanted out of a good loaf of bread. Crispy crust, airy and soft interior, and complex flavors from the rye and buckwheat and the leaven. The prices are steep, but that's to be expected from artisan bread bakeries and I'm willing to pay because I haven't yet figured out how to keep my own leaven alive. My tip is to come in the early afternoon, around 3 pm, to get the day's fresh bread. I came here right at 1 pm on a Saturday hoping to get a fresh loaf since that's when the website says fresh bread comes out of the oven every day, but none were ready. I ended up waiting around 30 minutes to get fresh bread and the loaf was quite warm still when I took it home since it was just baked. read more

I have returned a dozen times since my first visit. While I haven't given the rusticate loaves another bout, their einkorn loaf is a welcomed addition to our mornings. The rich and tangy flavour is perfect for slight toasting with a poached egg, avocado and smoked paprika. The bird bread also makes a regular appearance, exceptional when warmed with a smear of peanutbutter or dollop of jam. read more

This very modern and artisanal bakery is just down the street from our hotel, mostly breads, and a few desserts. The breads I sampled are thick and hearty, not exactly what I expected, and very expensive, but the people in line seem very enthusiastic about them. I decided I wanted to have a dessert after a nice snacky dinner at The Bird, down the street. Tough to choose, but I finally picked a hand pie, since it had two layers of crust. The crust was really delicious, not flaky but actually very "healthy" tasting... that is, nice and grainy, and not greasy at all. The filling is also just right, apple. read more

When you first walk into Seylou, you notice that something is... absent. While most shops are looking to add the most chic backdrops and have the trendiest music playing, Seylou does the opposite: it minimizes. There is no music. Customers whisper. There is little distraction. This absence allows you to focus on the smell and the movement of the bakers in the exposed kitchen. The vibe is clean and refreshing. I had the Pain Au Levain. The bread is black, almost like it's burnt. The outside has a distinct crunch and the inside is soft and chewy. The taste of the sourdough bread almost reminds you of an Ethiopian flatbread called Injera. The wood from the wood-fire oven adds a dimension to the flavor. The butter coffee was also pretty good. Oh, also, they have pizza which is supposed to be pretty good. read more

This is an easy five star review. One of those nationally known places in our own backyard and built from scratch. Thank you Jonathan and team. There can be a line on the weekends but they have figured out how to keep it moving well. It also doesn't seem to negatively the friendly and helpful staff. If there is something you want to know about, just ask! Seylou started with just breads and the occasional muffin and other similar snacks. In the past two or so years, they have continued expanding the pastry menu. There are now lots of sweet and savory options across various danish, scone, muffin, monkey bread, and other pastries. They have also recently started doing lunch items like soups, salads, and sandwiches but I have not tried any of those. Favorites include Rye bread as well as horse bread in the winter. Pain de Campagne and baguette is a good option for those who want a little less "strong" flavor. The good news is that it's all levain starter based so it will all be bold. Favorite pastries are on the savory side. Try seasonal options with cheese. They often sound strange in the descriptions but if you like the parts, you will like the whole. Now for the nutrition. All grains are milled in house and are whole grains from regional farms. While these are carbs and pastries, they still offer a lot of benefits. Yes it can be a little expensive but quality over quantity in this case. The staff is great with particular appreciation to Maria. She is always kind and warm and makes a point to remember regulars. read more

My favorite place to stop by for a snack on the weekends. Creative, delicious, rotating selections of pastries. I've never had a bad choice here and the savory pastries are to die for. I love that everything is all whole wheat but still super flaky and light. My only complaint: They sell out of items fast, so get there early and be prepared with a second (or third) choice when ordering. I also wish they offered skim milk. read more

While the pastries were tasty, the attitude Seylou soured our experience. Enticed into venturing downtown by the Washington Post's preview of the bakery, my mother and I took two separate trips to try their bread. The first time it was closed, and the second time there was no bread for sale. Their three-hour window (1-4pm) to buy bread is a curiously difficult hoop to jump through in order to buy an expensive loaf. To boot, their prized "horse bread" is only offered on the weekends, out of the 168 hours of there are only 6 when you can buy this bread. When we asked one of the two women behind the counter (sidenote: why do they need two people to ring up an order of pastries? They just got in each other's way) why they only offer bread so late in the afternoon she responded by saying (paraphrasing) "we want to change the culture and have people take bread home for dinner." I guess they also only want people who do not have jobs to eat their bread. I do not know how job-less bread lovers would be able to pay for their 12 dollar loaves, but giving people only 3 hours a day to buy it seems restrictive. The scones, cookie, muffins and two day-old bread slices we bought (for over 30 dollars) were tasty, but nowhere near worth the price and frustration of getting them. There are not enough hipsters in the city to support this case study in the negatives on gentrification. read more

Seylou is located right off Blagden Alley and offers a great space to pick up some freshly baked bread, grab a coffee and baked goods, or get some work done for an afternoon. As soon as you walk in, you will be greeted by the smells and sounds of breadmaking!--Followed closely by a welcome from the staff, who were very helpful in choosing between the various baked goods and loaves. I got a reasonably priced coffee and a slice of the Sweet Bread (a sweet potato bread) which was just the right amount of sweet and not too heavy. There are a few tables and bar space so I imagine this place fills up on weekend mornings, but it was pretty quiet on the weekday afternoon I was there. On my way out, I picked out a loaf to take home and enjoyed it over the next several days. Will definitely be back here soon! read more

They lost a lot of respect for yelling to tie my dog up after they went back to inside service instead of payment at the door, as it has been for over a year. They could have TRIED to be understanding, maybe take my order from the doorway and come get my card. But the treatment will have me going elsewhere. I get that things change. But THAT was nasty and NOT the way to handle the situation. Things and times change. Being polite as they do would go a LONG way toward you keeping business. Are there a few of your items I will miss? Yes. But, no matter how good your products, this last visit left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

Love the bread, pastries, decor and commitment to quality at this oasis of whole grain baking in DC. Not quite at the level of Jacque DeLangre's whole grain French sourdough bakery back in the early days of Monk Magazine or even Mani's Bakery in LA and SaMo, now gone too. But solid, smart, and friendly. And no guff. This Friday, however, the left-wing politicization that has destroyed most beautiful things in America over the last 12 years has appeared at Seylou. Memo to management: Customers don't generally care about your employees' political views or loaded political commentary. Make great organic stuff, and the politics will take care of itself. And please don't ask a reliable customer why he comes at the same te every week. Just be grateful he comes at all. Sadly, I have now soured a bit on Seylou's sourdough. And it has nothing to do with the bread. I come every Friday I am in DC at the same time read more

The majority of the menu items featured on their website were crossed off their menu when we arrived. The cookies we did settle on were awful, dry, and tasted like they came out of a tin. One of them was a shortbread the size of my thumb and tasted like sweetened sand. Another annoying bit was their covid policy. Despite most businesses being reasonable because of the vaccination rate, this place will only let a few people at a time into a crammed little atrium. This one lady needed them to put her cookies into a special box and to communicate this to them, she had to cram her face over our shoulders to shout it to them. These pointless restrictions feel like stepping back into March 2020. read more

Absolutely delicious pastries! All of them are whole grain which is also really good, gives them an interesting deeper flavor! I don't have many complaints. I got there on a Tuesday morning though and they were already down to the last pain aux raisins, still delish. Considering they only open at 8, I feel like they should have more stock at 9:45 but that also is a sign of how good they are. I also split an onion danish which was super salty and oily and good. The puff pastry had so many crispy delicious layers. My chai was also creamy not too sweet and perfectly spiced. Fair warning, if you don't like "dark" pastries I would be hesitant. A lot of the pastries look a little bit "over done" or at least that's what my mom said. I didn't have any problem with it but if you like a lighter less baked taste then this might not be the place for you. Looking forward to trying some of their breads next! read more

Went for the bread, but the real winners here were the pastries. The scone was amazing - excellent texture, nutty, not too oily/sweet, but not dry at all. As for the horse bread - it was very dense (one piece really will fill you up), crispy texture on the outside, and beans on the inside were a nice surprise. I was lucky to try it right out of the oven. It was pretty good, but not worth $11. Will be back to try the cookies and other baked goods though! read more

Great ingredients shouldn't be wasted with bad baking. Burnt bread (but good rise, open air interior with good flavor inside), uneven almond croissant (outside dry, inside too dense), just overall bad bakes. But they were generous with the almonds. For much better pastries and alway a goo bake, just swing around the corner to Buttercream Bakeshop on 9th St. Unfortunately my quest for the best bread in DC continues. read more

Diamond in the rough. This place is beyond scrumptious. The team was lightning fast with my order and the bread is the best in all of DC, MD, and Virginia combined. If you like cheap white sugar baked goods then this place is not for you. These guys produce the best bakery items this side of the Atlantic. The baked items might go so far as to make you a better person. The combination of spices and flours are so forward thinking I simultaneously found myself saying to myself, "What is this made of? ... and .. "I have never tasted this combination before." ... and "How did they create so many layers?" .. and .. "The anise is extraordinary!." Seylou used to be one of my favorite bakeries. The last time I went everything I bought was slightly burnt. I also bought a cake, because I was looking for something sweet. I asked the woman that worked there if it was sweet, or if she could recommend something that would be good for dessert. The cake was very very very dry, and no flavor. We each had a small piece, and I threw the rest away. I'm glad they're open during COVID, and I appreciate all the precautions they take.
