We are blessed in Durham with quite a few cycle shops. Not sure why I choose this one, but they did a great job on my old "Schwann." It had been languishing out in the shed, since I don't really have a decent place to ride. I finally decided to bite the bullet and get a decent rack, and get my bike ready for riding this fall. Easy delivery and pickup, took about a week (I'm not the only one with this idea, it seems!), and she's now road-ready. I have a second-hand road bike that rode a little rough in some gears. Indexed shifters were not calibrated well when I got it. I took it in to Seven Stars for a tune up. Walked in. Left a credit card and rented a bike and cycled the entire American Tobacco trail down from downtown Durham to mile marker 0 on the other side in Wake county and back (44 mile round-trip). Decent bike in good shape and very reasonable rental rates. I'll definitely go back. read more

This is a great little shop in downtown Durham with fine service from an experienced and practical mechanic--no bull or sales pressure. I can't say enough great things about this shop! I brought a brand new fixie but really didn't know how to correctly assembly it. I called around to multiple shops, who were looking to charge me $150+ and I wouldn't have gotten my bike back for 2 weeks. This was only our second stop on the hunt for bikes. They had some cute retro throwback styles lined up outside, although not really what we were looking for, so we ventured inside. There was a guy standing behind a bar-looking structure, making small-talk (not shop talk) with a few people seated at it. We asked if they had additional used or new bikes inside, and he pointed us in the right direction, then returned to his conversation. We lingered briefly to look at the selection, but felt ignored at best, and unwanted at worst. My experience with other small bike stores has been full of friendly, bike-passionate people who make themselves available to answer questions, provide guidance, or just talk bikes. Adrian ripped me off. Charged me over $100 to "tune up" my bike and true my slightly bent wheel. Did not "tune up" my bike at all and left a large dent in the back wheel so it now rides with a bump. I'm new to Durham and was kind of shocked there weren't many local bike shops. So I went to discover 7 stars, and voila! Everything you could hope for in a local shop! I was just going in for a lock, but the owner took time to show me the best way to lock up my bike (I hadn't used this kind of lock before), and gave me some tips on where to ride. I'm tempted to break my bike just so I can go back and hang out. There were a few bikes for sale, and another employee explaining repairs to another customer. Looks like exactly the vibe you would want in a bike shop: kickstand back, talk shop, and exclaim about the new gear that's out. read more

I've had Adrian working on my bikes since he opened. The first repair he did was on a set of very expensive hand-built wheels I had just bought from another shop. Adrian fixed them in no time, and charged me pocket change to do it. I wish I just had him build them in the first place. Adrian has also fixed my bike a number of other times when I tried to be a bike mechanic. He is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, without ever being condescending or arrogant. Seven Stars is quicker, better, and less expensive than any other shop. read more

Just got a new bike lock today -- I love this shop! I first took my mountain bike to Seven Stars Cycles almost two years ago and would never go anywhere else today. The are AWESOME at bike repair and service. They're passionate about bikes and it shows. I ended up buying a townie Linus for commuting from them. It's a great bike. They only have a small selection of bikes for sale, but they offered to build a commuter bike if the Linus wasn't what I wanted. The shop has a very cool downtown vibe. It's right in the middle of everything, but seems off the beaten path since it's on an alley. Laid back and relaxed. It seems like a lot of locals appreciate it; there are usually people hanging out at the shop talking bikes when I go in. read more

Great local business! I just had a flat tire and needed a new tube, but the service was unbeatable- they are fast, cheap, and clearly very knowledgeable. The mechanic talked me through the repair and potential causes of my flat in a really helpful and professional manner. He also tightened my brakes and made sure everything looked good on my newly purchased used bike. All of Durham's bike shops are great -- in different ways. Here's what's great about Seven Stars Cycles. The two shop owners are super dedicated to the Durham cycling community. They host an annual tweed ride in November and they have a shop ride the second Sunday of each month. They are committed to getting people on bikes. It's also super cool (to me) that one of the owners/mechanics is a woman. They have bike rentals and a variety of everyday cycling accesories and classic bikes for sale. They perform repairs and don't upsell to customers. They are pragmatic and in this for the love of bicycles. read more

Seven Stars saved me time and money. I wanted a certain bike that was not available locally. Seven Stars saved me a lot of time and trouble by figuring out how to get my bike (it's a European brand not widely available in the US.) Adrian did a lot of calling and hunting to get me the bike and built it up when it arrived. The bike was damaged in shipping (no fault of Seven Stars) and Adrian was super diligent about resolving the issue with the supplier. He kept me informed as the issue was being resolved.
