The repaired my back flat on an e-bike. Went flat again in less than a month which can happen due to road conditions but I thought perhaps something internal to the rim caused it. Took it back to then during peak bike repair days for students returning to campus. They may seem brusk to some when being honest about times, conditions, etc. They are HONEST and fit in a same-day flat repair only to charge me nothing saying they found a washer accidentally left in the tire from the last flat fix. AMAZING! Trust the staff, even if they speak frankly. They are VERY up front and honest and, very importantly, do excellent work at good prices/rates. read more

I bought a tire repair kit and some oil for chain today. I wasn't sure what was best type of kit for my bike but Cody took the time to explain the different types of kits, pumps, etc as well as show me what I'd need to do in event of a flat tire so as to ensure I am prepared if (when ?) that unfortunate day comes. I went in looking for a new bike lock after my heavy duty Kryptonite lock didn't make it in the move. Celia was so friendly and helpful, and I ended up with a very high quality lock for a very fair price. It was even easier to use than my old lock, too! I mentioned needing a tuneup and she encouraged me to bring it by so that they could fix my bike and attach the lock to my bike frame. A couple hours later, I rolled back in with my bike to get it checked out and to have the new lock mounted on the frame. The gentleman working on repairs (I regret that I didn't get his name so I could give him a shoutout) immediately took it back, gave it some TLC, installed the lock on the frame, and gave it back to me in a few minutes, and at no charge. My bike rides as good as new now thanks to their kindness and expert service. This is why you shop local, friends. Good, smart people with deep expertise who take great care of their neighbors. Great folks!! I stopped in last week for a rear view mirror for my new bike. Got one, and the person who checked me out said to bring it in if I needed any help. It's a bike mirror that hooks into your handlebars. How hard could it be? Answer: pretty darn hard! I came back today, and Celia had it put together in about four minutes. I showed up with my bike with both flat tires, didn't know what to do because it was my first time owning a race bike! The employees were very helpful, and took care of me immediately. I explained my situation and they took a look at it immediately and put air in. Other check other parts to make sure the bike was good to go. The whole process took around 10-15 minutes. My partner and I just received two old bike hand me downs from his parents, however neither were used in a very long time and needed a professional tune up. We looked at a few different repair shops but ended up going with Durham Cycles and we are so pleased we did. There was a five week wait before they'd be able to complete the repairs, but they allowed us to leave our bikes there in the mean time which was convenient. They gave us cost estimates and we agreed to wait. Before the repairs were performed, they kept in touch with us via phone for final confirmations and costs before proceeding. This was much appreciated because it left no questions about something that a lot of people, such as myself, may find confusing. The price for both repairs was very, very reasonable. Before the task was completed on my bike, I asked them a question about extending the stem. Turns out it was a simple question with a very complicated answer, yet they still patiently took the time to explain everything to me in person and via email so I could decide whether I wanted to proceed with that extra adjustment. Even though I didn't end up making that modification to my bike, now I know exactly what it would involve should I change my mind in the future. For now, we are very happy to have two working bikes that were very reasonable [cost-wise] to repair. Even if you don't know a lot about bikes, the staff is so kind and patient! I purchased a bicycle from them about two years ago and I've been steadily improving and upgrading the bicycle. The folks at Durham Cycles were available and helpful talking through my options during each improvement and took my priorities into consideration. I purchased a bicycle earlier this year. I thought I was going to use it just for recreational riding. I was very impressed and grateful when we first arrived that for 20 minutes we discussed how we were going to use the bikes. He was very patient with us and answered every question that we had since we had not rode a bike in at least 25 years and realize the technology of bicycling had really changed. unfortunately I do not remember the name of the person that we talked to initially. But what I can tell you is that the three people that work up front seemed equally capable of helping you. I do remember the owner name is David. The one advice I wish I had taken was from a person who was getting his bike worked on. He recommended renting a bike and trying it out to determine if the type of bike that I wanted was what I needed. I initially purchased a 7 speed bike, but I realized after riding it for a few weeks that it was too slow for me. But I realized that I really love riding like I did as a kid. So I went back to the store and explain my situation and they worked it out for me with a very nice upgrade. I forgot to mention that they are a one stop shop. So in 30 days I'm going to make sure to take my bike back and have them give it a once over to make sure that everything is working properly. I did do some comparison shopping. I went to a few other stores, including big box store and Durham Cycle is where you get the best bang for your buck not to mention it is a locally owned business. Super nice and if you're feeling like an amateur who knows nothing, I'd recommend talking to him. He shared tips and tricks and made me feel confident to go biking in Durham. Took my Bianchi in-m for what I thought was a much-needed tune up but the guys took a quick assessment and told me the bike was in great shape. The only bad thing about this place is that I loved my rental bike so much that I now want one just like it even though I can't afford another bike right now! Though I have a bike of my own, I rented today because I don't have a bike rack and I wanted to ride on the Tobacco trail. My fiancée and I got there two hours before closing and though they typically only do day or half day rentals, they made an exception for us and allowed an hourly rental because it was so late. I'm so happy they did because I was really anxious to ride on a new trail instead of the same ones always do! The customer service was stellar and when I save up enough money for a hybrid bike, I will try to remember to get it from here! Edited to add: For anyone else interested in renting a bike to ride on the Tobacco trail, this place is very conveniently located. It's only about a mile and a half from the trail and there are relatively wide bike lanes the whole way there. read more

First time buying a bike. Like all new beginners you start of buying something cheap and work your way up. Most bike shops that I visited were rude and look at you like you are the dumbest person. Which confuses me because 1. It's business for them and 2nd Everyone starts from the beginning. Well not this Bike shop. Super friendly, very informative and most of all patience with me. It seem like they understood what it means to be new at something. The price range like all bike shops lowest to highest. So they weren't offended that I bought the $500 one as my "beginner bike". I didn't catch their name but it was an older gentleman that help on on Sunday and today when I went it was a younger girl which she mention it was her last day (they are losing a great employee). Don't get me wrong she still did her job and offered other items (accessories) but I politely decline and again she didn't seem to be bothered, offended or pushy in buying other things. But she gave suggestions that as a new biker is needed. With her explanation I walked out with a bike, helmet and lock system. Again I read some of the reviews about there customer service and it just was the complete opposite of it. I truly believe in Yelp how it helps out for the rest of us and keeps businesses on their toes. So with that being said I am glad I overlook the negative comments and went here to purchase my first bike. What sold me was the customer service and the knowledge of the employees as we know Bikes does what it does it's who you go to for help that makes the difference! read more

Dave saved my bike's life!! I was ready to give up on getting my bike repaired after being hit by a car. I had taken the bike in 3 times to other shops, and no one had been able to fix it. The philosophy at Durham Cycles is that a bike repair job isn't done until it's been test-ridden, and this makes all the difference in the world. As Dave explained, riding a bike puts stress on the frame that simply spinning the pedals on a stand doesn't really do, so noises/problems show up when riding that might not show up on the stand. This is exactly what I had been experiencing, and other mechanics don't test ride the bikes to see what's really going on. The other shops seem to hide behind their "30 day service guarantee" - they don't really have to focus on getting it right the first time because they'll "let" you haul your bike all the way back to the store, wait, and haul it all the way home just to get the service you already paid for. (Durham Cycles has a service guarantee as well, but this time I don't expect to need it!) Very friendly guys, not elitist at all, and I really felt like I was taken seriously. I dropped by here because (A) the shop is really convenient - located on 9th St. between Daine's and Charlie's and (B) I'd heard great things about the guys who run it. The circumstances were a little different than most bike shop visits as I was there to get a repair appraisal for an insurance company after a bike/car accident. It only took them about 15 minutes to give me an official, written quote and they explained everything to me in case the insurance company presses for additional information. These guys are great! I'm an sometimes mountain bike racer and have seen many of bike shops on ninth street over the past 20 years. These guys are really upping the customer service game. I have a bike that is not available from any local dealer in need of some parts to repair the suspension. Even though it was no real profit to his shop, Dave went well beyond what I'd expect to phone the manufacturer, explain the problem and facilitate contact to ensure that I got my bike fixed. If they take that kind of care with a customer who hasn't bought a bike, I'm thinking that you'll be in good hands if you do buy a bike. I can't recommend this bike shop highly enough. The workers there are professional, knowledgeable, and very friendly. I bought my first road bike there seven months ago, and they were really helpful in fitting me for a bike and choosing one that fit my needs and was in my price range. Whatever they don't have in store, they order it quickly and build it for you. Whenever you purchase a bike from them, they give you three free tune-ups within the first year of owning your bike. That would have been good enough for at least four stars, but I have been back many times since my first purchase. Some roads in Durham are crappy, so I sometimes get a blown tube. Whenever I show up with a flat, they fix it and have me out the door within ten minutes. In fact, any routine maintenance is done surprisingly quickly. Recently I got into a bad accident in which I broke my shoulder and mangled up my bike pretty bad. I had to get a replacement fork, which had to be ordered from the manufacturer. Replacing a fork is pretty labor-intensive, but the labor cost was a very reasonable $50 Now my bike is as good as new. Not only this, but they are extremely helpful if you are new to cycling, like I was when I first visited. They explain whatever you whatever you want to know both understandably and in great detail. As far as other merchandise goes (helmets, lights, bottles, bottle mounts, etc.) the selection is pretty good considering the size of the shop. Perhaps a bit more than what you'd find online at a site like Amazon. There are a few other options in the Triangle when it comes to bike shops, but I wouldn't even consider going anywhere else. Even if you're not in the market for a bike, this place is definitely worth a visit. read more

Here's my issue with reading bike shop reviews: You either see people that just wanted to buy a bike, but don't really care.. or you see people that talk about parts of the bike that you didn't know existed (If you used the term "LBS" instead of "local bike shop" in your review, you are in the latter. no exceptions). But what if you're in-between? You care about your bike, but don't know much (and don't have time to know much) about it, and you just want some honest work done on it? This is me. I went to Durham Cycles needing a tune up and some general work. I say "general work" because it wasn't shifting super smoothly, but that's the extent of my understanding. I'm going to go ahead and say it right now: I was not expecting to like Durham Cycles. I walked in the door, and was greeted relatively rapidly. There's nothing like walking into a store of hip-looking people, knowing you are not hip. Durham Cycles was not like this. It was friendly and open. Criterion #1how I rate bike stores: If you try to sell me a new bike, I will not come back. I have this bike, I like it, and importantly, if I could afford a new bike I would have brought it up already. I love that Durham Cycles at no point tried to get me to spend more than I needed to. There was zero "you should buy this" or "you should upgrade that", and this is the kind of honesty I need in a bike shop. They outlined exactly what *needed* to be done, and no more. Everything took about a week and a half, so definitely chat with them BEFORE you need your bike to be finished, and give them some time (the tune-up ran about $60, I don't think you can find that on their website). There were, of course, other expenses that came up. They called each time and left a voicemail explaining things. Overall the repairs (tune-up, new chain and new cassette, new back tire, new back break pads) were about $160. This is literally half of what I paid for the bike in the first place, so a relatively expensive repair, but I felt like it all was justified. Criterion #2 how I rate bike stores: Don't be a dick to me because I'm not obsessed with my bike. I was a little concerned this was going to be the vibe at Durham Cycles, but it 100% was not. I worked with Greg when I dropped it off (no idea who did the actual work, don't care) and he was really patient with me. Greg very nicely explained to me what needed to be fixed, how this was general wear and tear, and what I should be doing in the future. Did not make me feel guilty for waiting forever to get a tune-up, and did not make me feel like an idiot for not knowing I was supposed to get said tune-up. THESE are the types of people that you want working for you. They get other people excited about biking, and make them excited about coming back. Attention to detail and willingness to go the extra mile to keep enthusiasts riding. I have done my best to annoy the bike shop with tune-ups, rush repairs after mishaps, and questions along the way. I have only received quick and reliable service while learning a lot from these guys, particularly the shop owner, Dave. But enthusiasts are not the only demographic that should try out Durham cycles. Whenever I am in the shop, I witness the care and patience Dave and the mechanics have while explaining options to new riders looking to solve recreational or commuting problems. You will be jested with, at times, depending on the mechanic you talk to, but at the end of the day Durham Cycles always finds the right fit of parts and whole bikes for its customers. As for any of the enthusiasts out there considering these fancy Felt road bikes. They are nice. You should ride them. Went in to buy a pump, should've been an easy and quick thing. But, the guy who "helped" me was so rude and condescending that I ended up just leaving and going to a different bike shop downtown. I really don't understand all the reviews here that say folks in this shop are helpful. My experience was the exact opposite. I got such a boatload of "bike guy" attitude that I couldn't bear it--I had to leave because he was so unpleasant. The guy actually felt he needed to explain to me that the large floor pump I was interested in was not something I could attach to my bike, but something I would have to "use at home"--um, derp! Do I look like I have the mental age of a four year old? If he had just stopped talking, everything would've been fine... But, after the second time he said something that clearly indicated he thought I was at the level of a CHUD, or Sarah Palin, I decided to vote with my feet. Cannot recommend this shop, at all. A couple years ago, a good friend and avid cyclist recommended Durham Cycles as the place to go for all cycling needs. At the time, I was in the market for a tri bike, but being new to the sport didn't know where to start. Dave spent a good amount of time asking me all the important questions before taking even more time (and great care) measuring me. Only then did he make specific suggestions as to which bike would best fit my geometry. Of the several options he gave me, I picked one that has served me very well over the last few seasons. I love my tri bike and find it fits me perfectly. Dave displayed then (and multiple times since then) a Spidey sense of knowing the biker and the ideal bike. Thank you Dave! Since then, my husband and I have bought three other bikes (two CX and one road) from Durham Cycles and taken our bikes in multiple times for repairs, tune-ups, upgrades, and recently packing my husband's Felt for a cross-country move. Given the countless trips I've made to the shop, I've seen and experienced first-hand the awesome customer service these guys give for things big and small. We've worked with pretty much everyone in the store at one time or another and it was always a good experience. These guys (and gals-miss you Chelsea) all know bikes and cycling, but besides that, they were always open to talking about the sport. Their personal anecdotes made going in to the shop a fun time, every time. My 15 month old son would have certainly gotten his balance bike from the shop if we were still in the state. I just moved from Charlotte to Durham and I was looking for a local shop that I can get comfortable with. After the three visits I've had at this shop (today being the last)...it's not the one. I've been riding and racing for quite some time, but maybe I was spoiled by the shops I've raced for. I doubt that... The issue I had with this shop is the the simple nature of human interaction. I've gone in to buy simple things and was treated like a moron and with disregard for customer service. A bike shop shouldn't be about just selling bikes, or showing how much one may or may not know about cycling. A local shop should welcome people into the cycling community... Not to be completely negative...a few weeks before I moved to Durham I came in to the shop to inquire about the local training rides and just to get a feel where the locals rode. There was a very helpful woman ( I can't remember her name, but she was a student at Duke) who filled me in and provided me with great info on how to get on to email lists, etc.. This place, and David in particular, is just GREAT! To cut a long story short, I initially took my bike in to have the breaks repaired, and afterwards found they were still a bit squeaky and wobbly. I wrote a 3 star review here, and David immediately wrote back very apologetic, showing he cared a lot for the quality of his shop, and said I could bring it back any time for a better look and free tune up. That was eight months ago, and I just took it by yesterday because I had a flat tire. I reminded them about not being fully satisfied with the breaks but didn't think they'd do anything since it was 8 months ago. WELL... with no questions asked they fixed the breaks (now they're perfect), repaired the flat and even cleaned the bike - for free! It is incredibly refreshing to see so much humanity in a business, and they've definitely earned my loyalty. Now I never want to leave NC! read more
