I want to give this place a good review, but I can't. The work done was fine, the customer service experience was fine, but I should have gotten a written estimate before leaving my bike. It ended up being 3xs what I expected. I'm a single mom whose kid found an old bike in our basement. He had outgrown his so I was happy to fix this better sized older bike up for him. But now I am facing a period of financial hardship due to this unexpected cost. I would recommend getting a written estimate and request being called for approval to any adjustments to it. read more

When I moved to Raleigh near the Greenway I decided maybe it's time to get a bike again and get some exercise. I walked into TLC when my wife was shopping at Lafayette Village and felt at ease the second I walked in. I started to speak to Gary who I come to find out is both the owner and a neighbor and we had a complete no pressure conversation. I told him my years of no riding and I don't want to spend a fortune as who knows if I will enjoy it again like I did as a kid. Gary just talked to me about the different kinds of bikes for the different styles of riding, as well as making sure the bike I would purchase would be comfortable and safe for me. I did not buy anything that day and made 1 or 2 more visits talking to different employees each time before making my purchase. They did not try to sell me a hundred add ons for my bike, yes they did sell me a water bottle holder. There was no push to buy this outfit or this accessory or these must have biking shoes, they understand that I am an around the area rider, and treated me as such. My bike needed repairs last week and I was nervous about bringing it in because I know nothing about bikes. I'm not a "serious" bike rider (you know what I mean), I just use mine to get around and I depend on it a lot because I don't have a car. I brought it in and Gary immediately identified all the problems and told me what they were and what it would cost to fix them (without making me feel stupid). He was very nice and up front about everything. I got my bike back the other day and I am so happy with it! He did a great job fixing it. Haven't even picked my bike up from having tires & chain replaced and already know that they deserve an excellent review. I have ridden my bike hard for 8 years so it definitely deserved some TLC from somewhere other than our "home shop" and these guys know their stuff. Wendy & Jaime came out to AE Finley YMCA to talk to a group of us who are entering a mini-triathlon. Jamie gave each bike a quick look-over and gave recommendations on everything we questioned him about. Wendy finished up with advise on nutrition & hydration - both are super knowledgeable. I knew my bike needed more than just some air so I took it over to the shop immediately. Quick & easy answers dropping it off and later on Jamie called to confirm what I needed - asked me how I rode and made suggestions for tires. Super rude sales associate! Condescending and unwilling to provide more information on the options available within each pricing tier. He continued to press me on what I had intended to spend and was adamant that I already had a figure in mind. I explained that I was not sure what I was willing to spend based on not having the information on the functionality and quality available within each price range. Instead of providing more information on the bikes, he says "You still didn't answer my question" in a rude and nasty way. I met Gary (owner of TLC for Bikes) cycling in Butner ~2 years ago when I first started riding. He looked at the bike and told me that the frame was too big for me. He then said, do you mind if I adjust it a bit for you and I said yes. He did it right there on the spot. I finally took the bike back to the store from which I purchased it and switched it to a smaller frame. I could feel a big difference after switching to a smaller frame. I then took my bike to TLC for bikes to get it tuned up. Wow, Gary did an excellent job including washing of the bike. I could not beleive it. The bike look good and rode good. You can really tell that Gary have a love for bikes. I have also bought nutrition, recommended by Gary from this store and they were great. Gary also likes to give training ideas. Great experience. Went in to take a look around after the gym and Gary was a pleasures to deal with. They have several boutique bike brands that are very high value to price. They are interested in selling you what you need and not how much money they can get you for because the bread and butter of the business is the mechanics. Great turnaround time on service and my machine has never run smoother. Parts and service are decently priced for small shop. I went in to get an old bike tuned up and they talked to me about what needed to be done and how much it would cost (which wasn't much). I asked them if a new bike would be a better option, they said in the long run yes, but my old bike could still get me around. After talking with them, they asked me how much I ride and showed a few bikes to me. I asked which they recommended and awesomely they said the least expensive one! It rides great. I recently got a flat tire, so I brought my bike in for a new tube. They put it in, in 5 minutes (no appointment necessary) and taught me how to properly do it.
