I reached out to John to find out the pricing for the repairs that I needed done on my bike. He advised me that he recommended that I bring it in for an accurate evaluation. He also provided his hours, location, and website with some pricing. His directions were clear on how to find him and complete the estimate. I texted him prior to coming as he requested but he was with another appointment. He was able to get me in a couple hours later. He told me exactly what he would charge me and how long it should take. My repair was done a little over an hour later. The price was very reasonable! He was able use some recycled parts to keep the pricing lower. John was kind and helpful. He even helped me unload and load my bike. What a hidden gem for Raleigh! I was guided to this spot early one morning when while loading up bikes for a road trip out of state, one of our tires needed a new innertube. John's business was the only one open before 9am. I called and off we scooted to the site, which was less than 2 miles away. What a nice set up in those storage units! Strange experience. I bought a used bike from him, for my daughter...but he completely brushed me off on replacing the disc brakes on my bike. His choice, sure, but what gives? He literally told me to buy the parts on AliBababa and fix it myself... Never would outright refuse, but kept dusting me off, like an old coffee table. I've been riding my bike 5 days a week since COVID closed my health club. This week I noticed a clicking noise so I figured I was due for a bike tune up. I called 6 different bike shops in Raleigh and everyone of them had a minimum 6 week wait. I finally found John on Yelp and gave him a call. John had an opening and told me to drop bye to check out my bike. Well in about 30 minutes he fixed all of my issues and gave me some helpful tips on bike maintenance. All this for a very fair price. I picked this business from Yelp reviews to have my new road bike repaired from damage during shipping and for tuneup and a safety check. John was just fantastic and got me in same day and made temporary repairs and made all adjustments needed. He had excellent COVID precautions in place and explained everything he was doing and why as I waited. The final cost was extremely reasonable and my bike rides perfectly. I will use him for for all my repair needs in the future. UPDATE AS OF 11/21: As a result of this review, I have now had to block John for messaging me with snarky comments. I would like to clarify something since this is an ongoing theme in the one other review that made it through Yelp's filters and the 5 others that were blocked by Yelp due to being shill reviews: John was very professional during the purchase process. It was only when I wanted my money back because he sold me a defective bike the facade of professionalism crumbled. If you bought a bike from John and it works for you, GREAT! I'm happy for you. However, if you happen to be one of the unlucky ones and you have a problem with your purchase, THAT is the true test of the professionalism and ethics of an individual. The fact that John has continued to harass me here on YELP is also creepy and very very telling of the type of individual he is. I'm just very very glad that I have moved and he no longer knows where I live! ............... ORIGINAL REVIEW BELOW ............... This is a warning to any college students coming to town who are looking for a bike to ride around campus and town -- BEWARE OF JOHN! --------------- John does not have a brick and mortar store. He advertises almost exclusively on Craigslist and operates out of a mini storage unit on Capital Blvd. I saw one of his many bikes for sale on CL and contacted him. He was very accommodating in terms of making time for me to come and check out the bike. The only way to really test ride it is to ride around the aisles between the storage buildings -- not flat and filled with pot holes and rocks. I asked about negotiating a price and he said that I could pay less for the bike -- however, if I did, I had to pay cash and the bike would be sold as is... if I paid the asking price, I could pay with a credit card and there would be a 30-day warranty for the bike. I originally offered less and he accepted. However, when I went back to pick up the bike, something told me to pay "full price" and have the warranty. He explained his policy that I could return the bike within 7 days for a full refund, no questions asked -- except that the bike had to come back in EXACTLY THE SAME condition. After 7 days and before the 30 days, then it would be for repairs. Fair enough. I take the bike home and ride it around in my neighborhood. I rode for less than 5 minutes and I heard the unmistakable sound of metal rubbing on metal. When I got home, I looked at the rear derailleur and saw that there was a plate between the derailleur and the spokes... that plate was all bent up like a pie pan that had been stepped on. At first I panicked thinking I must have "broken the bike" somehow. I took pictures of the bike and texted him and told him there was a problem with the bike and that I wanted to return it for a refund. He responded: "I made bet here that you were coming back. I won 50 bet with a friend. I have been selling vintage to college commuters." At this point, I was rather offended because any way you interpret the text, it was not positive. I went online to where he had the detailed pictures of the bike on flickr and saw the exact same issue -- he sold the bike knowing that it wasn't going to ride true. Then I was REALLY mad. I made arrangements to take the bike back the next day -- this time he had his wife there. He told me that he loved "big women"... that "his woman was a big woman"... and proceeded to tell me how much she weighed. (If my ex had talked about me the way he talked about his wife, my ex would be dead and I would be a widow because I would have killed him!). He just kept talking about how much he loved big women... I told him to just stop. Then he tried to convince me that the issue was purely "cosmetic" and that it could be fixed. I said that if it could be fixed, why didn't he fix it before he sold it. I also said that metal rubbing on metal would cause the bike chain and the parts to wear out. This guy is in business to rip off college students. He does a half-... job and hopes that a) you won't know any better or b) you negotiate a lower price so that it is "as is". He makes his bikes look nice on the CL ads -- however, he doesn't really do quality work. And he is insulting and rude on top of it all -- but don't worry... if you are a "big woman", he loves you! read more

During a season when bicycle shops are in high demand already, and Covid-19 has more cyclists out, typical retail bike shops are overwhelmed. I was able to get in here for a same day, on-site repair. Using a re-furbished wheel to replace my mangled one, I left with the repair and brake tune in 30 minutes. John is extremely knowledgeable, professional, courteous and delightful. Brought my Santa Cruz Heckler to John for a tune-up. The bike sat for at least a couple years, sadly. Over that time the front brakes locked up and my thumb shifters stopped working. I was fully prepared to pay something beyond the typical tune-up charge and perhaps even need to purchase new parts; however, within 24 hours, John had everything working properly and the bike fully tuned up. He also did a restoration of a Dave Mirra Haro for me and I was blown away at how great it looked. Last year, a few days before a 200 mile ride, John installed a new chain and cassette. Very professional and convenient and I had no fear of him working on my $4000 Cannondale Supersix Evo with Di2 electric shifting. He works out of a storage unit that is set up as professional as any bike shop. Park Tools, and great knowledge of vintage and commuter bikes. John is great at what he does. I brought my bicycle in with a friend of mine. I had the bike in storage for years, so I wasn't sure if it was worth it to have it fixed. John's shop is in a storage area, and it was very nice. We sat in chairs while John told us exactly what he was doing. I was on a budget and I did not want to spend a lot. I had gotten the 18 Speed from a friend at church for $20. John had told me $60, and that was what I paid. John replaced the tires and the inner tubes and the fly wheel(?), with perfectly good used ones, from other bikes that had been wrecked or what not. He had new parts for more money, and told us exactly what the price was, but he emphasized there was nothing wrong with the used parts. Next he cleaned my bicycle outside with a brush and soap and water and a power steamer. He test rode my bike and tweaked some things that needed to be adjusted. Parts of my bike had dry rooted, so they had been replaced. After I test rode it, we paid the money and we're on our way. It took about an hr for the tune-up, and my bike looks new. He had told me some things to keep my bike in shape like storing it inside, and cleaning it. Overall, this was a great experience. I highly recommend John. He was personable and explained things step by step and knew what he was doing, and was very reasonably priced. Great deal! read more

Well the 'warning' experience described here was nearly the polar opposite from the experience my wife and I had with John this past weekend. I've been looking to get back in to cycling for some time and after the sticker shock of the new stock in stores... I had searched for someone that sold re-furbed or used bikes and found John via Craig's List for Raleigh. He was on time when we went to meet him and even gave us better directions as the storage area is not really in plain sight from Capital. John took the time to explain proper shifting (my last bike was a Haro Master in 1990) and the other things I needed to know as this was my first mountain bike. I bought a Trek 820 from him and I've ridden it every day since I bought it from him.. just around the neighborhood to get used to it. Everything on the bike was / is mechanically sound and for a used bike... excellent. The only thing I found wrong was these over 40 legs that hadn't pedaled a bike in a couple decades. We're going back to buy another from him in the next few weeks for my wife. He never once made any comments or was anything but professional with us. Don't bother looking elsewhere for bicycle repairs. Skip the bicycle stores for excellent service at unbeatable prices. All services & prices are advertised on John's website, which is not shown by any competitor. I had two hybrid and one electric bike serviced. John is there to fix bikes, not sell you equipment or bicycles, so there's absolutely no upselling or pressure. I had a bad shifter that needed to be to replaced on one of the bikes. He showed me exactly which shifter to purchase on my own to get, explaining how to identify the knockoff shifters. Before I left the store he actually found that he had the exact same shifter that was on my bike, looked it up on Amazon in front of me, and sold it for the exact same price. While he performs the repairs, he explains the problems and teaches you how to repair them yourself. Who does that? He works out of a storage unit, which has no bearing on the service provided. He is a very genuine businessman who definitely seemed out for my best interests. He let me demo nearly 10 hybrid bikes which he had out an ready upon my arrival. Additionally, I was able to trade in my seldom-used road bike. He also answered several questions I had. At first I was a fan when John sold me a decent bicycle and offered to pay me 50% of the original price that I paid when I was ready to move on 1 year later. In the intervening months of riding the bike about 20 miles/week I had to replace the pedals and the rear wheel. I also added a rear carrier and lights. When I called John to say that I was ready to take him up on his offer of 50% and brought the bike in he hemmed and hawed and offered me 30%. I was ready to accept when he then told me that he could not 'get the cash' inside of 72 hours. It seemed clear to me that dodging his original promise was what he was looking to do, so I walked. What a great person to work with. His shop is located in a storage facility so his prices are very reasonable. And he can pick up your bike if necessary. When I stopped by with a fairly simple repair, he stopped working on a project to complete my project while I waited. This saved me a long drive back to pickup the bike. And John is giving back to the community by donating parts and labor to repair bikes used by refugees. This means a lot to me. We need more businesses like this. I needed to get my 7-year-old son's bike's rear derailleur fixed or replaced, and called John to see if he was willing. Since it wasn't a high end bike, I didn't want to spend a lot of money on it (plus he'll outgrow the bike in a few years). John was super nice, said he would get it fixed for me for a good price, and he was true to his word. We waited about 15 minutes as he found a used derailleur to replace it with, and the bike works better than before. Great guy, great experience. Since he works out of a mini-storage location, he's a little hard to find. Give him a call first to make sure he's there (he's often delivering bikes or picking up bikes) and to get him to let you in the gate. It's a low overhead business, but he's an honest guy making an honest living. My other son needs a bike and I'll definitely be looking at John's inventory to buy one for him soon (he buys/sells bikes too). read more
