The owner, Dave, was extremely rude and kicked me out of the store. I went in the store with my wheels looking for information about what my options and costs were for fixing it. The owner must have thought I was looking for a free repair lesson because within the first minute of talking to him, he told me that giving advice would be putting himself out of business and that I should pay for university bike-repair courses rather than bothering him. He then told me to leave his store. Of course, these were not my intentions, but every bike shop I've been to have always had open mechanics who were willing to talk about or even show what they were doing, which would have increased my confidence in their services. I went into the shop last week with a problem that needed fixing on my daily commuter bike. I was expecting to have to leave my bike for a day or so as has always been the case anywhere I've ever taken my bike for a repair, but instead, the owner, Dave, stopped what he as doing and fixed my problem right on the spot! I've never had a bike shop do that before and needless to say, I was very thankful to not have to give up my daily wheels. I think I will prefer this place to Tip-Top, they recently re-did some repairs to my commuter bike that Tip-Top had perhaps not done a great job on (in TTs defense they just did a quick job and didn't even charge me). I didn't mind paying for the labor if it actually improves my ride and lasts more than a few days. Very detail oriented and friendly. read more

I just bought a bike I love from them. They fit me to the bike, helped me find a lock and a helmet and after trying valiantly to get my new bike in to my teeny car found me a bike carrier to strap it to and installed it to me. A new bike also gives you three free tune ups, although I don't imagine I will need them as a brand new bike. They were really kind to my toddler daughter as well. read more

Great shop! This shop was recommended to me by a friend who has had her bike serviced there. I've worked with David, the owner, and Scotty, one of the employee's and both guys are friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. Scotty built up a Bruce Gordon touring frame for me by transferring all the components from another bike I had purchased (but learned was too small for me). They have great attention to detail and focus on getting the fit and performance of the bike exactly right, not just getting your money and getting you out the door. Since that time, I've had my daily driver, a Devinci, and also a Longbikes tandem completely overhauled. The Longbikes is a bit of a "Frankenbike" with both Shimano and Campagnolo components and they did a great job on it. Consistently excellent guys to work with, I can't say enough good things about this shop. read more

I dropped in for a problem with gears slipping. Jeff dropped what he was doing and put my bike up on the repair stand. He said it could be a worn chain or cassette problem, but then made some cable adjustments. He took the bike for a test ride to confirm the fix. He could have replaced some parts and hammered me on the bill. Instead, he sent me on my way with a handshake and a "come back again". That type of integrity is hard to find in business these days. I had a great experience at Durham Cycles recently when I went in to purchase cycling shoes for indoor cycling.I was slightly intimidated to go in because I do indoor cycling and I'm not a die hard cyclist, but the gentleman who helped me(maybe the owner?) was very helpful, knowledgeable and patient. He answered all my questions and made great suggestions. I wound up purchasing a pair of cycling shoes for less $ than I was expecting to spend that he then fit and placed my cleats for. His knowledge and expertise really created a top notch experience. I really felt that the guidance and suggestions I got were in my best interest as a customer. Not sure my review helps at all, since this place already has a perfect 5 stars ;) But I don't think I've ever been treated as honestly and well as I have with Durham Cycles. Dave, the owner, is the chillest guy around, and incredibly passionate about supporting cycling in the community. The quality of the bikes they sell is unquestionable, but what really completes the experience is the entire "package": they really work with trying to find the best bike for you, individually, rather than loading off their inventory or getting the most expensive purchase. These guys are the best! I used to race as an amateur and the racing and heavy training load has been hard on my equipment. David and the rest of the crew there have always repaired my bikes quickly and professionally. They even loaned me a back wheel (twice) when I broke a spoke. I have been looking for a road bike for a while but am new to cycling in general. The guys at Durham Cycles (especially Dave) were knowledgeable and helpful. I didn't feel like it was a big sales environment, but instead they even suggested I try out bikes at other shops before making a decision. I bought a bike yesterday after 3 visits there, and I love my bike! Dave fitted me to my bike and explained the whole process to me. They also give 3 free tune ups during the first year that you have your bike. Absolutely recommend them! read more

I honestly have not been back to this store, but based on the reply by the owner trying to find out why my experience was bad--I have to conclude that my initial experience was either a fluke or a misunderstanding. I took my bike in here to get help putting my brake wire back in place. One of the guys here fixed it for free on the spot, but he also said it needed to be replaced. I agreed. I brought it back in the next day and they did it very quickly. They also did a mini tune-up as I noticed when I was biking away that my gears shifted well again and that my chain had been oiled. They also told me that my helmet was old and due to safety it would be wise to upgrade on that (mine was from 2009). The service here is above that of the other bike shops I've been to in Durham. Stop one on my bike store tour, as I *finally* take the plunge and get a set of wheels. I had heard that this was more of a high-end bike shop, so expected to be in and out quickly. But the guy who was working entertained our many questions... even really stupid ones, like: What's a derailleur. Since it was our first stop, and we really know nothing about bikes, we had a lot of those :) After our visit, we felt we had a generally good idea for the range of prices and bike styles that would suit our purpose best. Unfortunately, they have just a couple commuter-style bikes (seeming to focus mostly on road bikes), so we'll be purchasing elsewhere. But I wouldn't hesitate to bring our future bike here for repairs and tune-ups! read more

Great for high and low end work! The team helped me with a an ancient bike that hadn't been used in 15+ years. They even found and fixed a problem that I knew about, but had forgotten since I hadn't used it in so long. Best of all, they kept the costs reasonable - other companies would have charged just as much just to clean and lube the bike. We also wanted to find a nicer bike for my wife - their recommendation was spot on and she loves the bike! Even their other recommendations with regards to other accessories were spot on! Went in to rent bikes for an afternoon ride around the American Tobacco Trail and the price was fairly cheap and bikes were in good condition. Shop is located on ninth street, pretty close to the trail and staff are super helpful! read more

I can't say enough good things about this shop and the staff in it- I have been here three times since moving to Durham in January, and each time the staff has been helpful above and beyond what the situation called for. The most recent time I visited the shop was because to see what could be done about a sliding seat- not only did they help me fix the issue on the spot, but I was given delicious homemade cookies while waiting AND the person helping me with that problem noticed another problem with my brakes and fixed that, as well...asking for nothing in return! I lived in San Francisco before this for four years and never have I experienced such a generous and selfless bike shop/staff as what I have seen at Durham Cycles. I rolled my bicycle in with a service question and the guy who assisted me was knowledgable, friendly and informative. He provide service and insight, I would return to work with him. Although I don't remember his name, I know him by sight. The other two employees were less than attentive to the world beyond their customers. My go-to shop has become Durham Cycles on Ninth Street. They've worked on several of my family's bikes. What prompted this email was the miracle that mechanic Scotty just performed on my 1995 Bianchi road/touring bike, which needed new shifters. The old ones "went the way of the Dodo," he said. Owner David helped me locate replacements on eBay (I did the bidding) and Scotty installed them. Turned out the shifters were problematic and he performed several highly skilled feats to make them work. David kept me informed the whole way, asking if I wanted to keep trying. In the end, the price was still reasonable and a heck of a lot less than it would have cost to replace more parts in my bike in order to adapt to new shifter styles. Cycling has been my passion for more than 20 years, and I've worked with a lot of mechanics and shops. Durham Cycles is my all-time fave. And, no, I didn't get a discount for sending this, I just really love the place! read more

grand daughters 1st bicycle the time frame on the last purchase of a 2wheeler was almost 40yrs ago. took my grand child in store to look for dependable bicycle, she may not ride everyday but the type bicycle we invested into will last her for several years. Chet and Dave were very helpful.. Chet one of the newer employees didn't waste my time with a lot of uh or I don't knows. the owner Dave was there. they listen to my must heartfelt concerns for my newest rider. The price was just a little shocking but as we reviewed what was involved my mouth closed slightly. always heard you pay for what you get. my grand child is over joyed to be receiving the bicycle. I thought there was about 3 sizes in bike and the person had to adjust to what was available. Due to front wheel wobble problems we were advised from a great bike shop in VA to visit this "guy" at Durham Cycles who is the wizard of properly fitting one for a bike! We were thinking....Really? We've got to go all the way to Durham? But we did and it turned out to be well worth it. The "wizard" spent a great deal of time with us and helped us on our way to fixing the problem. I just moved from Pittsburgh to Durham a few days previous, and stopped in to Durham Cycles to get a few items for a bike that I just bought (chain tool, toe straps). I spoke with Chelsea, who was very friendly, and she located these simple items for me quickly. We made some small talk, and I mentioned I'd be back in a few days for some more things. What really made this trip special was the interaction I had with another employee as I was walking out the door (I didn't catch his name). He asked what kind of frame I was riding, and I told him I just bought the bike a day previous. When he asked if it came with a helmet, I told him no, but that my helmet was being shipped from Pittsburgh. He asked me if I wanted to borrow a helmet (as long as I promised to bring it back), and let me pick one off of the rack to wear. He said the owner would rather lend me a helmet than have me ride without one. This kind of act is something that makes one feel very welcome in the local cycling community, and shows that the employees at Durham Cycles care about their patrons as more than just customers. What an awesome place. I have lived in the area for about a year and a half now and am an avid cyclist. As such, I have been hitting all the local shops in the area trying to find the best one for maintenance and upkeep of my bikes. I took in my road bike after having it tuned up elsewhere before. Just before taking the bike to Durham Cycles, my previous tuneups left something to be desired as far as ride and shifting quality are concerned. That all ended with Durham cycles. After a brief explanation of the shifting problems I was having with the rear derailleur, the mechanic took a few notes and quoted me something like $30. Not bad, considering there was a pretty significant amount of adjustment/re-cabling that was going to be needed. A couple days later I got a call that it was done and picked it up. The price was exactly what I was quoted and I can safely say that the shifting is now better than it has ever been! While I was picking it up, the friendly mechanic even took the time to walk through exactly what was done and made some simple upkeep recommendations for me to do myself to prolong the life of the bike. That being said, I can't recommend Durham Cycles enough! I will gladly be back for all of my bike maintenance needs! read more

I cannot recommend a better place to go for parts, repairs, etc. I walked in yesterday expecting to be told to come back later (the typical response when walking in a busy bike shop in the middle of the day), and the guys there immediately helped me with the repair. These guys are top notch!! I have been bike shopping for all to long. I am debating between a road bike or a tri-bike. Each time i would lean towards a tri specific bike, David would remind me "I've never seen a tri course too flat for a road bike but I have seen many a road course too hilly for a tri bike." He also gave me some confidence about my old steel frames steed. He has saved me SO much money. They are the only shop I would give my money to. For the record, my money is getting stashed for a Felt B16 (though I may restrain myself and go for the S22). I will gradually upgrade my old road bike, I race triathlons and time trials - not road races or crits. read more

I can't say enough about Durham Cycles. I have been to several cycling shops across NC and VA and I can say that this place is where I have had my best experience and most detailed and genuine help. They are happy to educate you, regardless of your level of experience and are more than willing to help you find something to fit your needs (not to just bring money to their store). I recently bought a new bike from there (after coming in several times prior) and since then I have returned for help/pointers here and there. No matter how often I come in, there is always a welcoming employee who seems happy to help. It also made my husband and I feel valued when on return trips, both Ben and Dom remembered prior conversations and didn't hesitate to stike up a conversation. Dave is also incredibly smart and did a wonderful job helping me decide on a bike that was right for me and did a great job fitting me on the bike.
